[Bug 140574] (Gutsy) gnome-mouse-properties does not switch touchpad tap-buttons
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center When I check 'Left-handed mouse' on 'Mouse Orientation' the external mouse and the synaptics touchpad buttons are correctly switched, but the synaptics touchpad tap-buttons (simulated button clicks when you tap, double-tap or triple-tap on the touchpad) keeps the default order (right handed) which makes the tapping wrong. (single tapping keeps generating the equivalent of the left click, but due to buttons being inverted, a right click effect is what you get). gsypantics also does not helps as this application does not have this capability. There are two ways to correct the tap-buttons: 1. Editing xorg.conf and adding inside the synaptics input driver configuration the following options: Option TapButton13 Option TapButton31 2. Editing xorg.conf and adding inside the synaptics input driver configuration the following option: Option SHMConfig true and using the synclient command to interactivelly update the tapbuttons, with the following command: $ synclient TapButton1=3 TapButton3=1 The expected way is that this command should be executed whenever 'Left handed mouse' is checked and the inverse executed when unchecked. ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- (Gutsy) gnome-mouse-properties does not switch touchpad tap-buttons https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140574 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 45347] A list of requirements is needed
OK, I filled this bug (and the patch), and also filled other bugs related to Java support. For example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/java-common/+bug/45348 - update-java-alternatives does not change the JAVA_HOME In both cases I've proposed a solution to fix the problem. In this particular case Jerome suggested he would fix it (on comment 4) so I forgot it and expected it to be solved some day. But now it seems that the situation has some how changed. I'm willing to help on this but I need to know what kind of solution is expected. Trying to sum up all requirements, I get the following: 1. Only one way to configure default Java globally. 2. Support for overriding the default Java for a user. 3. Support for overriding the Java version used for an application globally. 4. Support for overriding the Java version used for an application for a user. 5. Mechanism on (1) should preset JAVA_HOME globally. 6. Mechanism on (2) should preset JAVA_HOME for a user. I think a combination of /etc/jvm and update-java-alternatives (both schemes working together) is the best way to fix this. I don't like the idea of some Java programs depending on the JAVA_HOME environment variable, but the web is filled with Java applications that the only think they require to work out of the box is a definition of this variable. So having it predefined and working with the global (or per user) way to configure Java is IMHO the best way to help those Java users. Do you have other requirements? [Bug 84501] Re: Java6 Web Start just opens the Java control panel instead of running the application
The problem here is the way the javaws is invoked. Since Java SE 6, if I want to run just the Java Web Start in standalone mode, which is useful if I want to list/delete/run previously downloaded applications, I have to run javaws -viewer as the .desktop file correctly says, but if I need to run an application having the JNLP url or document, I have to execure javaws URL. If I run the javaws process without arguments, a simple help is written to the console. I think that a .desktop is needed to run Java Web Start from the menu, as it works now (javaws -viewer), but when registering the mime type only, we need the Exec field be javaws only. [Bug 102708] [whichlist] swt jars should be installed in /usr/share/java instead of inside eclipse plugins
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libswt3.2-gtk-java Currently when libswt3.2-java is installed, the swt3.2-gtk.jar is installed in /usr/lib/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86_3.2.1.v3235.jar (could change if the swt version changes) and some links pointing to this jar are created in /usr/lib/java. I see 2 things wrong: 1. The other java jars are all installed in /usr/share/java 2. /usr/lib/eclipse directory will be created even if the user don't want to install eclipse. SWT is general enough so other java projects are using it, for example azureus, which is also in universe repo. If a user installs azureus, libswt is installed and /usr/lib/eclipse is created. Also if a java programmer installs libswt3.2-java and want to develop an application using this library, s/he will look for the swt jar in the expected location, which is in /usr/share/java. I think that the right is to do with swt the same as other dependencies of the eclipse ide (like lucene, for example). When libswt3.2-gtk is installed, swt3.2-gtk.jar (and other links to it) should be installed in /usr/share/java, and when eclipse-rcp is installed (the package which depends on swt which is part of the eclipse ide) it should create a link in /usr/lib/eclipse/plugins. ** Affects: eclipse (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- [whichlist] swt jars should be installed in /usr/share/java instead of inside eclipse plugins https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/102708 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 45348] Re: update-java-alternatives does not change the JAVA_HOME
And why not mount the jvm scheme over the update-alternatives scheme? In my case, I installed maven. Maven searches for /etc/mavenrc and ~/.mavenrc If I create one of those files, Maven works OK. But as I see it, local configurations are needed if I don't want to use my default configuration, so if I want to use Java SE 6 globally, but J2SE 5 for maven, editing /etc/mavenrc is the way to go. But if I want to use Maven with my default Java installation, I should be able to configure Java in one place, and my specific application (maven in this case) should use my global Java configuration. Currently we have update-java-alternatives as a way to configure the java related commands in only one script, but if I need to configure a java compatible environment I have to edit /etc/jvm or ~/.jvm Maybe if update-java-alternatives could generate (provably based on priority and/or manual mode selection) a base for jvm/java-common to check if no override is created (~/.jvm and /etc/jvm) both worlds could benefit from each other. This could be update-java-alternatives generating a /etc/jvm.default (not much feasible) or java-common returning a default folder maintained by update-java-alternatives if ~/.jvm nor /etc/jvm is found. If I want to customize my default jvm I create a ~/.jvm, but if I happy with the default instalation, everything should work out of the box. -- update-java-alternatives does not change the JAVA_HOME https://launchpad.net/bugs/45348 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 45348] Re: update-java-alternatives does not change the JAVA_HOME
What I was trying to solve is that some (almost all) not apt-gettable Java applications require a definition of JAVA_HOME. - Some not available as DEBs (like Maven (maven.apache.org)). - Some available but a new version is required (Ant, Eclipse). Obviously I can edit the launch scripts to add export JAVA_HOME=$(bash /usr/share/java-common/jvm-find.sh). But my idea is to simplify this step. java-gcj-compat is in fact an attempt to create a compatible Java environment. DEB based applications are adapted if needed so no special Java compatible environment is really required, but having java-gcj-compat simplifies the modifications needed in packages that expect the same folder structure as Sun JDK structure. So almost no modification is required. The same happens to JAVA_HOME environment variable and Java compatible folder structure. If java-common package added a symliked folder, this simplification process could be simpler for a lot of java packages. Using update-java- alternatives as the only way of updating java configuration is, IMHO, the way to go. The day we have OpenJDK in apt repos in think this will be obsolete, but who knows what will happen then... Maybe GCJ will live for another 20 years -- update-java-alternatives does not change the JAVA_HOME https://launchpad.net/bugs/45348 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63792] Why not create java-gcj-compat(-dev/-plugin)-4.1 and -4.2?

[Bug 34688] Solved in Mustang (Re: Java incompatibilities with GTK theme -- Dapper Flight 5)
This problem is solved in upcomming Mustang release. I have downloaded and tested Java 1.6.0-beta2 and the problem is already solved in this version. Java 6 comes with a better implementation of GTK Look and Feel, and in the beta2 release the reported error is not seen anymore. The support for GTK LAF in Java 5 is not very good, and only some predefined themes are supported. As Human not ClearLooks are officially supported, this probably won't be solved. Java 6 comes with a much improved GTK LAF, which uses native GTK functions to get info related to the GTK theme. Because of this, the GTK LAF implementation will support all GTK themes. (Still GTK LAF has some errors, but the implementation is much better) As the changes are too big, I doubt Sun will backport the new GTK LAF to current Java 5, but in Java 6 we won't see this error anymore. -- Java incompatibilities with GTK theme -- Dapper Flight 5 https://launchpad.net/bugs/34688 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
