[Bug 861375] Re: Indicators don't stay open in multimonitor setup

2011-10-18 Thread Rackstar
I'm having the same issue, I made a video to illustrate the problem.

However gtk recordmydesktop was giving me a hard time recording both of
my screens so there are some corruptions, most noticeable the fact that
only the left upper side of the menus show. However it does show the
problem.

On the left monitor the menus behave very unpredictable, sometimes they
work, sometimes they don't. Mostly, after the click, the menu just pops
up and immediately disappear again. However on the right monitor, the
menus are pretty stable (sometimes they flicker when opened, but at
least they stay open after that)

[Bug 875233] Re: loss of focus after closing an app

2011-10-17 Thread Rackstar
As you were replying I was investigating the problem too. I found the
solution, it was not related to unity sorry...

I was using conky and failed to mention this. I have found a workaround.
Set this in the .conkyrc config file:

own_window_type override

And the problem is solved

Sorry for the trouble

[Bug 743588] Re: appmenu keep showing the title for a closed or minimized window

2011-10-17 Thread Rackstar
I have found a solution for my machine, it was caused by conky (sort of
desktop widget that was stealing the focus)

For those interested, put own_window_type override in your .conkyrc
config file, this should sort it out.

[Bug 838659] Re: [Inspiron M4110] can't output to external monitor via VGA

2011-10-16 Thread Rackstar
I was suffering from the same problem and I found a workaround on this
blogpost: http://blog.jvc26.org/2011/09/29/multimonitor-ubuntu-oneiric-
fglrx (thanks jvc26)

It seemed quite logical, however, what I noticed was if I started amd
control centre from the dash, it would always crash if I pressed apply
but if you type in your terminal: gksudo amdcccle (yes three c's not,
two like in the blogpost) then it does allow you to apply the changes
and from now on I don't have any problems.

I'm using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card. I had the same
issues with beta 1 and 2, now with clean install of the final release,
the problem continues

[Bug 875233] Re: loss of focus after closing an app

2011-10-16 Thread Rackstar
Ok,

the bug is definitly related to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/743588 (which has not seen
activity since natty)

Scenario 1: When I open gedit, and close it immediatly (without typing
anything), the title disappears but the desktop does not get the focus

Scenario 2: When I open gedit, typ something, close without saving (and
therefore letting a model dialog close the app) the title gedit
remains in the panel, even after it was closed. (as the similar bug
report mentions)

Result of both: I need to click on the desktop to get back back focus on
the desktop and be able to use shortcuts like alt + f2 and ctrl-alt-
arrows

I'll upload both the scenario's as video.

[Bug 658307] Re: Slow resume from suspend on Dell Inspiron M301Z

2011-01-23 Thread Rackstar
Ok, so I took some time debugging the issue, I followed the guidelines
on the wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend)

As I'm on a fresh install, the issue only triggered once or twice in a
series of 5-6 suspends. I suspended with sudo sh -c sync; echo 1
/sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend creating a trace in dmesg.

I added the dmesg output as an attachment, and you can see two call
stacks from fglrx. The last suspend in the trace took about 2 minutes to
resume, that would be the most interesting one. Though, it could be that
this is a different issue than Joep Jansen (comment #9).

Thanks

I've got exact the same problem on my Dell Studio 15(58), first I
thought resuming failed, but it seems that I just was impatient. Very
annoying and always happens on the worst moments. It does not happen

I had the same in Lucid, but then due some problems with fglrx I had
some colored blocks on my screen to say that it was indeed resuming.

[Bug 670308] [NEW] Suspend/resume regression on Dell Studio 15 (fglrx) on maverick

2010-11-03 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

This weekend I did a clean install of maverick (with an existing /home
partition), I used Lucid before on this laptop.

Suspending my laptop never is a problem, but about half of the time, it
won't resume anymore. I open it up, hear the disk turning, but screen
stays black (no back lid either)

I tried looking into the logs, but all I can see are successes, but I'm
no expert either. I have an Dell Studio 15(58), with intel i5 and ATI
Radeon HD 5000 series.

If more information is needed, please do ask.

[Bug 665978] Re: Slow Printing

2010-11-02 Thread Rackstar
Hey,

I also have the same problem with my Brother HL-5240.

With one driver Brother HL-5240 BR-Script3 it only prints about 3
pages and with the other driver Brother HL-5240 Foomatic/Postscript it
takes ages. For 10 pages, it takes up to 15 minutes or more.

I never used to have any problems back in jaunty, in lucid I had
problems that PDF's weren't printed at all if they contained too many
images (which was my main reason to switch to maverick).

There are people with the same issues with Brother printers on this
thread, and proposing a workaround:
http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9755270

I was also suffering from this bug with evince:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cairo/+bug/661724 . But with
acroread and okular I have the same issues on slow printing.

An example file for me is attached to this post, the text in this pdf is
copyrighted.

Thanks!
Ruben

2010-11-01 Thread Rackstar
Hey,

How long will it take for this patch to arrive in the maverick updates?
Or can you explain to me what I have to do with the .patch files?

I updated to Maverick, because I though this would fix my printing
issues.

Thanks!

[Bug 572868] [NEW] Lucid Live CD/USB freezes shortly after start

2010-05-01 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I downloaded the ubuntu lucid amd64 final iso and did the sha256sum. I
created a live USB and also burned the iso on a disc. Both produced the
same error:

When I let it boot from the USB/CD it shows the purple splash with the
keyboard equals human-icon, after that goes onto a black screen with a
blinking cursor. When using the CD you can hear the CD spin down and no
activity on the laptop.

When I press the keyboard while booting, I can choose different options,
options try ubuntu, install ubuntu and check for errors all fail
in the same way.

As I'm not able to do much, I can't use apport or read logs (unless
there is a way to do so?) I'll put as much information about this laptop
as I'm able to find:

Intel® Core™ Duo T6600
(2.20 Ghz - 2 MB L2 cache)
15.6 LED widescreen
WXGA (1366 x 768 pixels)
Mobile GM45 chipset
4 GB DDR2 RAM
VGA: Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD
And it has currently Windows 7 installed

Thanks for reading this bug report, and hopefully this can be fixed?

EDIT: little detail though: when it hangs, I can reboot by pressing ctrl
- alt - printScr - B

[Bug 572868] Re: Lucid Live CD/USB freezes shortly after start

2010-05-01 Thread Rackstar
Additional information, I found how to remove the quiet splash option
and I can see now that hangs on this:

When I use the Live CD:
atkb.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be using the
hardware directly.

And after a while and a sort of a stacktrace, I get all sorts of udevd
error with workers that failed.

After some research, and thanks to this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9195971#post9195971 . I found
that setting nomodeset, it works like a charme

[Bug 572868] Re: Lucid Live CD/USB freezes shortly after start

2010-05-01 Thread Rackstar
No sorry, I hit Enter to fast, It still doesn't work, but it gets much
much further, as far as I could follow the lines, it now said creating
live session user and such, so that's at the end of the boot, not at the
beginning anymore.

Now it halts with the cursor visible but not blinking, screen dimmed.

Hope this helps

Several threads on UF adressing this bug, or variants of this bug:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1466735

Workarounds being:
settings i915.modeset=0 of setting it to 1, setting xforcemesa ...

Affecting apparently mostly Dell's

(Still no workaround that 100% fixes my problem though, mine isn't a
Dell, but from much smaller Belgian company Qforce)

As of what I understand, this is a regression between Beta 2 en the
Release Candidate.

I can confirm this in Jaunty and Karmic (both up to date) on an Acer

It seems to only slow down the hibernating and waking, but doesn't
cause any problems afterwards.

Wow, didn't expect to find exact bug on what I was experiencing.

This happens with Matlab 2008a, sometimes also Netbeans and other. On
Jaunty and Karmic.

I ran thunderbird --debug to check where it fails during restart. I'll
add it as an attachment.

[Bug 492910] [NEW] Suspend regression on Acer Aspire 9420 since 2.6.31-16

2009-12-05 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Suspend/resume worked flawlessly on Jaunty.

In Karmic (-14) I had kernel oops when resuming, leaving me with a very
unstable system. It was fixed by -15. (see:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/417842)

In Karmic (-15) resuming works, but sometimes led me to an unstable
system, for unknown reasons (to me).

Now with todays latest updates suspending fails (linux-image-2.6.31-16).
The screen turns black with a blinking cursor. Lights indicate that
wireless is still active. I can switch terminals, but when going back to
F7, it all freezes, completely black.

If more information is needed, please ask.

Thanks for your time!

[Bug 344428] Re: Screen freezes after gdm login

2009-11-07 Thread Rackstar
Hi Chris,

I was wrong, It wasn't my ram, it went well for a day, but then the
freezes came back again.

I tried to start an xterm session, but even that leads to an empty
screen (xsplash wallpaper) + cursor. It is possible to notice that it
won't be possible to log in, as you can't change terminals anymore when
by pressing ctrl-alt-fx, when you get to gdm.

Sometimes the nm-applet freezes also, but I can still keep on working:
- nm-applet showed icon of no connection, when I click it, nothing happens
- not able to switch terminals with ctrl-alt-f...
- able to use gnome, but with hick-ups. (When I open Terminal, it opens, but it
doesn't respond)
- Shutdown doesn't freezes

I tried running recovery mode, logging in through terminal, and then
executing 'startx' (so skipping the graphical log in), I can see my
desktop, files on my desktop, wallpaper, panels, left icons and menu's,
but not the tray icons in the upper right corner and no fusa. So that
points towards the network-manager again maybe?

I will add 4 files:
- my var/messages file + dmesg file of multiple failed boots:

http://ninetynine.be/rfiles/messages.txt
http://ninetynine.be/rfiles/dmesg.txt

- my var/messages file of the network-manager-applet-freeze I was
talking about as attachment

I also am experiencing this bug (oops):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/451815, but I don't
know if this has something to do with it.

Thank u!

2009-11-02 Thread Rackstar
Thanks Chris for your fast response. I think I fixed my problem, thanks
to P4man on ubuntuforums, in this thread:

It involved a failing memory-socket, so my previous comment can probably
be ignored. Althought if they have the same problem, try running a
memtest.

[Bug 344428] Re: Screen freezes after gdm login

2009-11-02 Thread Rackstar
Hi,

I might be having the same problems, I asked help on ubuntuforums, but
no luck (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1306926).

I will describe my problem the best I can, if somebody could help
pointing me towards the right direction, so I can file a decent bug
report that has chance of being fixed.

Sometimes (70% of the time) when I boot, everything is quite normal when
I reach the login screen. But I can notice that I can't switch terminals
anymore by pressing ctrl-alt-fX.

I still can enter my password, the animations are all ok. The login box
disappears, but then the Ubuntu logo + throbber don't appear. I can
still move my mouse. The only button responding is the power button, but
shutting down also fails. I can do ctrl-alt-prt scr-reisub. Even if I
try to shutdown before I log in, it fails.

Other thing I sometimes experience is, when I click on edit
connections on the network-applet, the dialog box shows up, but I can't
do anything in it. I don't know if it has something to do with it, but
then I can't shutdown properly also. And almost guaranteed to have a
problem while booting.

I'm eager to help to fix this problem, which logs should I provide?

[Bug 463439] Re: At startup, Ubuntu One on 9.10 says Capabilities Mismatch

2009-10-29 Thread Rackstar
In the release notes:

A serious bug in the Ubuntu One client software included in Ubuntu 9.10
that could potentially result in loss of data has led to disabling file
syncing access for this client version on the Ubuntu One servers as a
precaution. Users who see a Capabilities Mismatch error when trying to
use Ubuntu One should install the post-release upgrade of the client
that will be made available immediately after release, fixing the
original bug and restoring file syncing access to the Ubuntu One
servers. Files are still available via the web interface at
http://one.ubuntu.com./ [one.ubuntu.com]

Contact syncing and tomboy syncing services are not affected by this
issue.

[Bug 370816] [NEW] VPN connects flawless, but no changes in behavior

2009-05-02 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

Hi,

Since I updated to Ubuntu Jaunty, I have not been able to get my VPN

I does connect without any problem. It gives an error when I enter the

access to my personal space on the server.

Thanks!

[Bug 370274] [NEW] nm-applet doesn't show all wired networks

2009-05-01 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi,

I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04.

When I right-click on the network manager and choose Configure
networks, I can see more wired networks than I see when I left-click
the applet.

In the beginning it just disappeared when I edited the wired connection.
So I had to delete it, and make a new one. But later on that didn't even
work anymore.

I don't know if that worked on Ubuntu 8.10, I never had to do this till
now.

I don't know if this is related but, when I turn my VPN on, everything
shows I have a good VPN connection. But I can't access the websites for
which I need the VPN. This did work in Ubuntu 8.10.

[Bug 367004] Re: openoffice freezes when I try to install certain extension

2009-04-27 Thread Rackstar
This seems to have fixed the issue! The assisting technologies were
enabled (probably by default). When I turned them off, I could instantly
use the templates.

Thanks! Will this be fixed in further updates of openoffice or gnome?

[Bug 367004] Re: openoffice freezes when I try to install certain extension

2009-04-26 Thread Rackstar
Thanks for the very quick response!

I moved both .openoffice.org and .openoffice.org2 directories. I then
installed it without any errors or freezes. Don't know what changed. I
can give you my old .openoffice.org* directories if you're interested.
But before yesterday I never used openoffice a lot.

But it's still the same when I try to open a template, it crashes. I
made a screencapture in .ogv, the application is in dutch, but you'll
probably get the point.

I don't really need the extension, but I was interested in it.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 366676] [NEW] power manager shows up twice after suspend and resume

2009-04-25 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my Acer Aspire 9423.

When I go do suspend, and I resume later. The gnome-power-manager applet
shows up twice. Once using my personalized iconset (hydroxygen), and
once with the default icon.

apt-cachepolicy gnome-power-manager said this:
  Geïnstalleerd: 2.24.2-2ubuntu8
  Kandidaat: 2.24.2-2ubuntu8
  Versietabel:
 *** 2.24.2-2ubuntu8 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

One thing that noticed me is that the expected time left using the
battery depends on what applet I check. But only slight difference, but
just to state that they are independent.

Hope this is enough information.

Thanks

[Bug 367004] [NEW] openoffice freezes when I try to install certain extension

2009-04-25 Thread Rackstar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Hi,

I have downloaded this extensions from the openoffice website:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/TemplatePack_II

When I try to install this, the installer finishes, but then the
extensionsmanager freezes and I need to kill openoffice. When I try to
use one of the templates in this extension openoffice crashes. I tried
to reinstall the extension, but the extensionmanager frooze again, but
earlier. I successfully removed it, but this should not happen, it is
one of the most popular extensions.

I haven't tried to manually install other extensions, but there are
already two pre-installed.

Working with ubuntu 9.04 on my Acer Aspire 9423.

** Description changed:

  Hello,

I'm an average ubuntu user. At a certain point Evolution started to
crash randomly. It crashed silently, just like killing it. It happened
while doing changes, receiving mails, and a lot just unexpectedly after
  a undefined period of time.

I was fed up with it and changed to thunderbird. I used a tutorial to
migrate to TB. Same symptoms began showing up. The big problem is: I
can't reproduce it! If I restart it, it just works, but waiting for
another crash. I couldn't reproduce it on Evolution also.
+
+ EDIT: I found a way to reproduce the crash in Thunderbird:
+ File-compress folders does AlWAYS crash.

In the meanwhile Firefox started crashing randomly and silently too. But
only on changing pages (mostly on big websites like newspaper websites
and Facebook), not when doing nothing.

I tried making a new profile for FF, didn't help. Also reinstalling
  flash plugin didn't help.

I tried to wait till such crash and do dmesg | tail, but nothing
  related shows up.

As all these problems arrised around the same period of time (two or
three months already). I think they are related somehow. I reinstalled
