[Bug 1021070] Re: ufw firewall does not launch authentication dialog

2012-07-05 Thread Rainer Rohde
Costales,

I noticed that the described behavior is intermittent, and does not only
pertain to gufw (which, when started from the command line, works just
fine).

I found the same behavior also with Software Center, not bringing up the
auth dialog when clicking on Install to install a new piece of
software. When logging out and back in again, the behavior is fixed
across the board, including Firewall.

I am wondering what software package could cause this, as I am sure that
this is not limited to Firewall, but any GUI driven tool that calls for
authentication. Again, this is intermittent and so far I haven't
observed a pattern to reproduce.

[Bug 1021368] [NEW] Window border disappears when using Wine based programs

2012-07-05 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

I am not sure if this pertains to Unity or Compiz.

When running Wine based programs (in may case, Office 2010) for some
time, I lose my window border around any other running Ubuntu app. The
only way to fix it for me is to log out / and log back in (running
unity from the command line often renders my desktop unusable, as it
does not always recover).

I would expect that running Wine based programs would not affect the
operation of native Ubuntu apps, including Nautilus, and so on.

[Bug 1020086] [NEW] Touchpad on Dell XPS 16z not working as expected

2012-07-02 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

There's currently no Touchpad option associated with this device, even
though the Dell XPS 15z has a multi-touch capable touchpad, similar to
my former MacBook Pro (which, btw, worked perfectly fine in Ubuntu).

Currently, the touchpad only works in mouse emulation, and doesn't have
a dedicated touchpad tab in the System Settings Mouse and Touchpad
settings menu.

Please find attached a screenshot that shows shows this behavior.

[Bug 1019943] [NEW] Dell XPS 15z -- several issues

2012-07-01 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

I traded an older MacBook Pro against this Dell XPS 15z, and I am
shocked to see how much doesn't work right, considering this is a Dell.

Just as a summary for you all to see (I hope that this will get fixed in
due time towards Quantal's release):

1) Touchpad only works like a mouse, no multi-touch whatsoever; System Settings
doesn't even recognize it as a touchpad
2) USB mouse sometimes works, sometimes does not. Dmesg finds it every time,
though. Really frustrating considering that the touchpad doesn't work that well
either.
3) nVidia GeForce 525M vs Intel Sandybridge Mobile -- so far, I am unable to
install nvidia-current drivers and bumblebee in order to be able to have 3D
apps pick my GeForce card, rather than the Intel on-board card

Attached is a summary text file generated from the SysInfor app.

behave as if auto-hide works (i.e., they are covered by the no longer
auto hiding launcher).

[Bug 999767] Re: MyUnity should not have an icon inside System Settings

2012-05-15 Thread Rainer Rohde
The idea is that MyUnity's extra icon breaks the default window size
that's been determined for System Settings. I've made a comparison
screenshot that shows more the default System Settings window on the
left and the System Settings window with MyUnity installed on the right.

I personally think that MyUnity should not have an icon in System
Settings -- or at least make it optional. It just doesn't look as nice.
MyUnity can be easily reached from the Dash anyway.

[Bug 991685] [NEW] Lyx crashes when saving as or opening file from file browser

2012-04-29 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

Only recently LyX started to act up and crashes every time I try to open
a file from the file browser or save a file. Each time I click on the
file browser that LyX calls up it immediately crashes without any error
message.

work and it worked perfectly fine until today -- at least I noticed it
today...

not now?

removed from the System category and move up into the Personal
category, and after the Management Service was add, the System
Settings window does not fully display all available options without
having to scroll. This doesn't look as neat as it used to be.

So, having said this, is System Settings supposed to behave like that
(please see screenshot attached).

NB: please ignore my choice of icons; I am well aware that Faenza does
not include the category icons yet.

[Bug 985257] [NEW] Transition to Desktop shows black screen

2012-04-18 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

At the lightdm screen, when using the arrow keys up or down to select
different user accounts, then going back to the initially visible
account, the wallpaper disappears during login and is replaced with a
black screen, mouse cursor visible.

However, when I don't touch the arrow keys and log straight into my
account, my chosen wallpaper and the Ubuntu watermark stays until the
logging in process is complete.,

What I would expect is that there is no black screen when logging in,
regardless of pressing the cursor keys or not.

2012-04-09 Thread Rainer Rohde
This is very frustrating because the project lead decided to go with XML
Copy Editor on Windows, and since I am the Linux advocate here, I am not
able to run the program on Ubuntu at all. Doesn't look too good for the
usecase I am tryin got suppor there. I was happy that XML Copy Editor is
cross-platform, but the only platform it seems to work on is Windows.

[Bug 961501] Re: CTRL+ALT+DEL no longer brings up Logout Dialog

2012-04-03 Thread Rainer Rohde
** Description changed:

  This is a regression.

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL no longer brings up Logout Dialog, but launches
the Shutdown Dialog instead. This stated to happen a few days ago.

- Also, I noticed some other strange behaviors regarding the function keys
- on my MacBook Pro (5,2). When pressing the F5/F6 function keys, which,
- without pressing fn normally change the keyboard light brightness, now
- don't do anything. However, pressing those keys somehow changes the icon
- theme from my selected Faenza theme to the default Ubuntu theme
-
- I am not sure if those issues are related, but it all seems to have
- started on the same day.

[Bug 961501] Re: CTRL+ALT+DEL no longer brings up Logout Dialog

2012-04-03 Thread Rainer Rohde
I see. I'd rather have the logout option when pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL,
because when pushing the power button on my laptop, the shutdown dialog
appears. Historically, CTRL+ALT+DEL killed the X-window session,
effectively logging you out. That concept should be kept.

Doesn't make sense to me why pushing the power button and pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL bring up the same dialog...

Joseph,

just curious - what makes you think that this issue is indeed kernel
based? For some reason, I personally believe that this might be a gnome-
setting-daemon issue.

So, before I post an upstream kernel bug, could you please enlighten me?

2012-03-28 Thread Rainer Rohde
I noticed that I can launch XML Copy Editor from the cli by proving an
argument like so: xmlcopyeditor testfile.xml. The editor launches
since that file doesn't exist. However, from the new file menu, I get
a choice what new file I would like to create, and I choose XML
Document, click OK and the editor crashes - again, without any error
message.

2012-03-28 Thread Rainer Rohde
I just tried the upstream kernel (3.3.0-999-generic) and the issue still

What else can I do? This is really frustrating, especially because the
F5/F6 keys mess up the icon- and window-themes instead now.

I noticed other postings regarding this issue as well here: #832603.

[Bug 951479] Re: Laptop with nvidia binary drivers does not suspend when lid is closed

2012-03-27 Thread Rainer Rohde
I agree with the previous post! Thinking it was safe to assume that the

lock the screen and b) does indeed overheat badly when putting it back

[Bug 962175] Re: Cups fails to install/update

2012-03-26 Thread Rainer Rohde
Thank you Martin, that fixed it for me.

And I now realize what I did - a few days ago I was experimenting with
Likewise-Open, and, because it didn't work for me, I deleted it. Every
time I booted up, though, I noticed that there was some shell script
that still called Likewise-Open, so I decided to do a find command that
finds all instances of the phrase likewise and removes them as well.
Little did I know that this would affect Cups. :/

So, thanks again for helping me out here - and I apologize for the
blunder on my part!

When maximizing Chromium from a minimized window that was previously
maximized (that is, fully integrated into the global menu), Chromium
