[Bug 1370505] [NEW] lubuntu 14.04 backlight maximum or minimum on lenovo laptop
Public bug reported: Hello, i had and have and will this problem on every laptop and with every version of ubuntu and its derivatives. I installed lubuntu 14.04 on IBM lenovo laptop with intel graphic card and my backlight could be changed with function keys but it goes either to maximum or minimum. it is similar to my bug previous bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/990932 but this time i can change it before and after login but as i said either to max or min ... i tried couple of things to solve the problem via trial and error: - edited grub conf file and changed acpi_backlight=legacy line to acpi_backlight=vendor - i created a file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf here and edited it like this: Section Device Identifier card0 Driver intel Option Backlight # intel_backlight BusID PCI:0:2:0 EndSection (i tried both of Backlight and intel_backlight options) -and when i start the xubuntu power manager and try to set backlight (which is installed in lubuntu) i can see the backlight widget on the screen but it doesn't effect anything, still backlight goes to max or min, but the widget's animation cannot go further than one step, it stucks on the first step. - i tried to change the value of brightness file under the directory /sys/class/backlight/ideapad but sudo does not work here, it says permission denied, but when i read the value of actual_brightness file i can see 0 or 10 ( of course just these) First of all i don't think this is related to kernel, and i don't wanna try upstream kernel. I think it is related to xserver package and ubuntu acpi management and many configurations file in ubuntu that i don't know exactly how many are and where they are... Hello, i could solve the problem on my own through trial and error. I just started to remove the packages which are related to brightness and completely removed acpid, acpi-support, laptop-mode-tools, xfce4 -power-manager and xfce4-power-manager-plugins packages, then installed back all of them step by step, between steps i rebooted my computer and checked the status. At the end i determined the xfce4 -power-manager and xfce4-power-manager-plugins packages are responsible for this conflict about setting the brightness. Hello again, i don't know if it is related to kernel. What i know is that the backlight keys function normally on login page of xubuntu but after i login it seems like some module or driver that i cannot determine is taking control of it and cannot set it step by step. It just goes to maximum or minimum, there is no way to change it step by step. At first i could not set properly my backlight via function keys, when i tried to set it, it was going to the maximum brightness always , but later i googled the problem and added to /etc/X11/xorg.conf file Section Device Identifier Default Device Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1 Option NoLogoTrue EndSection this section. Now i can properly set my backlight on login screen, it works as normal but when i login to my account, i cannot change my backlight still as usual. if i try to increase one step it goes to maximum, if i try to decrease it goes to minimum, there is no option to change it step by step... i had a similar problem with xubuntu and ubuntu 11.10 , i solved it but i don't remember how i managed it. apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: hello, i had installed ubuntu 11.10 on my msi ex600 laptop with Nvidia 8400m G graphic card. i installed and activated Nvidia accelarated graphic driver (version 173) (tried also Nvidia accelarated graphic driver ( post-release updates )(version 173-updates) but i cannot decrease my backlight via fn keys, actually i can but just before logging on, if i try to change backlight it goes to maximum ( i can see even the process in the upper right corner, it goes to maximum step by step and then my screen starts flickering until i right click on a nautilus window and then stops) i updated my kernel while installing to 3.0.0-16-generic i read many articles and bug reports about backlight issues of notebooks ; i added in my grub.cfg file acpi_backlight=vendor or nomodeset but it didn't help. i added in my xorg.conf file Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1 line it didn't help ( actually it seems my brightness control is already on but there has to be a conflict and some module changes my backlight and set it to maximum always) how can i solve this conflict and control my backlight properly with my function keys. Public bug reported: hello, i had installed ubuntu 11.10 on my msi ex600 laptop with Nvidia 8400m G graphic card. i installed and activated Nvidia accelarated graphic driver (version 173) (tried also Nvidia accelarated graphic driver ( post-release updates )(version 173-updates) but i cannot decrease my backlight via fn keys, actually i can but just before logging on, if i try to change backlight it goes to maximum ( i can see even the process in the upper right corner, it goes to maximum step by step and then my screen starts flickering until i right click on a nautilus window and then stops) i updated my kernel while installing to 3.0.0-16-generic i read many articles and bug reports about backlight issues of notebooks ; i added in my grub.cfg file acpi_backlight=vendor or nomodeset but it didn't help. i added in my xorg.conf file Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1 line it didn't help ( actually it seems my brightness control is already on but there has to be a conflict and some module changes my backlight and set it to maximum always) how can i solve this conflict and control my backlight properly with my function keys. I installed gnome, xfce and log on to gnome classic, gnome and xfce, there is no problem with these desktop environments. The function keys and backligt works properly. I think i would use gnome or xfce instead of unity. People say that unity is a disaster, it is not a disaster but still a bad desktop environment.
