[Bug 1813388] Re: Crash on startup of fs-uae-launcher. complains of LhaFile missing from Python

2019-01-26 Thread Richard Brooklyn
running pip3 install lhafile removed the warning about lhafile, but the
program still fails to start.

I managed to obtain a log from the python3.6 pop-up that appears, which
I have attached as well.

[Bug 574877] Re: proper_shutdown_behavior_for_ubuntu.patch breaks existing behaviour and may require new unknown dependancies

2010-06-12 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Hi Thomas,

My install is fairly basic. I used the 'alternative' cd i386 image to
install a 'minimal' system, and added X, mythfrontend and other bits
from that. I have mythfrontend starting automatically from init scripts.
very bare bones.

Unless mythtv or X pulled in anything dbus/policykit/consolekit related,
then it's not installed.

Is it not possible to go back to the old behaviour? And maybe have the
'default' options to call dbus scripts to shutdown if the fields are
left blank by the user? I think this would be the best of both worlds.

[Bug 574877] [NEW] proper_shutdown_behavior_for_ubuntu.patch breaks existing behaviour and may require new unknown dependancies

2010-05-03 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

Since 0.23.0+fixes24158-0ubuntu2, a patch has been applied which causes
mythtv to use DBus to attempt to shut down the system. Whilst this is a
step in the right direction for the 'doing it right' argument. It breaks
existing behaviour and causes dependencies which don't appear to be
satisfied by the mythtv package itself.

Case in point;
My set-up was a custom installed ubuntu lucid system. Installed with minimal X
and only whatever else I could get away with. Before this patch came in, I was
using two custom commands to shut down and restart the system. Now they no
longer work, and the dbus method appears to not work either. The only way I can
shutdown currently is to log into the system and issue the command manually.
The 'dbus' package is already installed, but it appears to not be enough to
make this work. I do not know which package needs installing or configuring and
this may add extra overhead this system cannot afford.

No error messages appear at all to tell me why anything has failed, so I
have not included logs.

This patch appears to have made it in very late in Lucid's development
cycle. At the very least the extra dependencies need to be added to the
mythtv package so the system can shutdown and reboot. Ideally, I feel
this update should be reversed until it has received more testing, as it
did suddenly break a couple of machines when a feature freeze was in
effect.

The behaviour in ubuntu1 version was fine, and worked as expected.

[Bug 194980] Re: [PS3] Hardy daily build fails to boot: Squashfs cannot mount

2008-03-02 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Hi jms,

With the exception of the comments on otheros.bld, it's worth reporting
these issues as separate bug reports so they can get the love that they
need. This bug is mainly focused on getting the LiveCD to work.

The URL is here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ps3-port

Colin changed the title of the bug to include [ps3] at the beginning, so
I guess we should be doing that from now on if the bug is likely to be
ps3 specific.

Keep up the energy on the testing though. Hardy is going to be that much
better if we keep going the way we are! :)

[Bug 99120] Re: Missing frontend for avermedia dvb-t 771 (yet working for another 771 card)

2007-04-08 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Hi,

Sorry to be taking so long with getting back to you. Work has left me
with very little free time or energy recently.

To confirm. Mandriva's kernel version shows as 2.6.17-13mdv in uname.

I did some digging, with surprising results:

When card one is installed on it's own: No issues.

When card two is installed on it's own: No issues. Registers same
zarlink frontend as listed in original bug report.

When card one and two are installed, but are in each other's PCI slots:
No issues... Mythtv picks up both cards just fine and I'm watching one
program whilst recording another as I write this.

I'm slightly freaked out by this. Maybe the second card was just loose
the whole time? Would that even make sense? My assumption would be that
it wouldn't work at all under those conditions.

Please close this bug. Hopefully it will help anyone with the same issue
in the future.

Thank you for your time, Phillip.

2007-04-02 Thread Richard Brooklyn
I get the exact same error message in Mandrive One LiveCD 2007.1

This this is either a hardware issue (in which case, I apologise for
wasting time and bandwidth) or a kernel issue.

Interestingly, the mt352_read_register error message appears in the same
place (when I modprobe the dvb-bt8xx module), so it's probably
significant. I wish I knew what that error code meant.

I shall do more digging later.

[Bug 99120] Re: Missing frontend for avermedia dvb-t 771 (yet working for another 771 card)

2007-04-02 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Hello Phillip,

Thank you for your lengthy reply. It's nice to see this bug is being
taken seriously, despite my amateurish attempts at reporting it.

Attached is the full dmesg report, as requested.

I cannot confirm right now that it only happens on the second card. I'll
have a play with removing the hardware tomorrow and get back to you on
that one.

Mandriva uses kernel 2.6.17 according to it's distrowatch page. I shall
confirm this tomorrow by booting the livecd again.

The Gentoo system used kernel 2.6.18 or 2.6.19, I'm honestly not sure.

I did find this, which is concerning me. Maybe this is a hardware issue
after all: http://www.linuxtv.org/pipermail/linux-
dvb/2006-January/007910.html

Is there a way of forcing the driver to see the board as having a
specific frontend? I'm certain the cards are identical, and if the
driver can see past this error, I guess it might work?

[Bug 99120] Missing frontend for avermedia dvb-t 771 (yet working for another 771 card)

2007-03-30 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-13-generic

Hi,

I have two identical (as far as I know) AverMedia 771 DVB-T cards
installed on this system. This system does PVR duties with mythtv,
amongst other things.

Running Gentoo, and later Dapper, I was able to use both DVB cards (I
think: I'm certain it was okay in Gentoo, not as certain for Dapper, as
it only ran for about a week and I didn't test this) without issues.
However, since re-formatting and installing Fiesty, the system only
seems to work correctly with one of them. It seems to complain about a
'missing frontend' for one of the cards. Here is the relevant dmesg
parts:

[ 25.789445] DVB: registering new adapter (bttv0).
[ 25.842741] DVB: registering frontend 0 (Zarlink MT352 DVB-T)...

I have no idea if that mt352 error is relevant, or what it means.

[Bug 94278] gaim seems to crash randomly

2007-03-20 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

Gaim seems to crash fairly randomly on my edgy set-up. It sometimes
crashes when I'm not even there.

It does, however crash a lot more frequently with one specific contact
more than any other. I only ever use gaim for MSN conversation only. The
other contact has the 'offical' MSN client (Windows live messenger
these days, right?). It seems that every line this contact tries to send
me tends to cause gaim to segfault. gaim doesn't even show the said line
in it's window before it crashes, and there is nothing in the logs to
show anything was ever said to me. So my hunch is that something is
going wrong between my contact pressing enter, and gaim trying to show
the message.

Version: 1:2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu9

I shall attach a backtrace. This is the very first backtrace I've ever
done. Hopefully it's of some use with this frustrating bug.

[Bug 81537] supplied version gtk-gnutella will expire shortly

2007-01-25 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk-gnutella

Upon start-up, the supplied version of gtk-gnutella for edgy
(0.96.1-0ubuntu2 in universe) gives a warning along the bottom edge of
the window that it is about to expire (or become old). After this
expiration date, I'm suspecting that gtk-gnutella will be unable to
connect to the gnutella network.

Today (25th of January 2007), the software is reporting that it will
expire in 27 days.

The exact warning is as follows:
*** VERSION WILL BECOME OLD IN 27 DAYS! ***

As Feisty will not be available by this time, and Dapper and Edgy still
have on-going support, I feel that the package needs updating to prevent
this becoming an issue.

[Bug 36905] Re: KDE hyperlinks in do not work in a standard (non-kde) Ubuntu enviroment.

2006-11-27 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Maybe. I think a suggestion would be good, as long as it doesn't
actually require Konqueror to be installed, which would add a lot of
bloat for such a simple thing.

I think a much better soultion would be for a more standardised approach
to the whole thing. Instead of caring if Konqueror, Firefox, Opera,
MyBrowser is installed, the system should call a universal function to
just open 'a browser', which Gnome, KDE, XFCE or whatever else could use
to open up the browser according to the user's preferences.

I've just checked out the freedesktop site hoping that would be able to
help. Sadly, I cannot see anything for web browsers, unless I'm simply
being thick. The page of interest appears to be
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Standards -- maybe it's time for a new
standard?

[Bug 36905] Re: KDE hyperlinks in do not work in a standard (non-kde) Ubuntu enviroment.

2006-11-23 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Hi,

This is a fairly standard Ubuntu installation, so no Konqueror.

Installing Konqeuror seems to fix the issue. But this is not an ideal
solution (then again, this isn't exactly a critical bug), and I still
want all URLs to open in my preffered browser (which is firefox), with
this fix, the URLs present in amarok open in Konqueror.

However, it's worth noting that clicking a link in the wikipedia part of
Amarok (click on 'Artist' in the context menu when playing music) does
actually open firefox, which is my choice in the 'General Options'
section of the settings window.

Also, this bug appears to affect my Fedora Core 6 installation as well.
My FC6 already has Konqueror installed, but is otherwise a Gnome set-up.
Konqueror loads up on links within the about windows, but firefox does
get started when I click a wikipedia link.

[Bug 55428] Helper applications cannot be changed, even when asked to do so by Firefox.

2006-08-06 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.5-0ubuntu6.06.1
This may affect other versions.

When Firefox has to download a file it cannot display, it gives the user
the option of opening the file in a helper application, or downloading
to disk. The user can select a helper application if desired, and has
the option to tell firefox to always open X type of file in Y helper
application.

If this option is enabled, Firefox cannot handle the helper application being
removed at the later date in a gracefull manner. If filetype X is opened, and
Firefox cannot find helper application Y, then the user is shown the following
message:
--
/tmp/file.example could not be opened, because the associated helper
application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
--

However, it is currently impossible for the user to change a set
association in the preferences. The View Edit Actions button in the
download pane of the preferences window appears to be what the user
needs, but it only appears to apply to plugins on the system.

If set helper applications can be edited by the user, this bug reporter
was unable to find it. It doesn't appear to be in the preferences
window, as hinted by the error message. Firefox should not be asking the
user to change a setting which doesn't appear to exist. If the setting
does exist, I feel the help text should be changed to be more helpfull.
Maybe even with a option of changing the helper application there and
then.

[Bug 36908] Re: amaroK's Cool-Streams lists mp3 streams

2006-07-20 Thread Richard Brooklyn
Hi,

I listen to the Frequence 3 internet radio station a lot. They offer
streams in mp3, ogg and aac+.

The ogg stream sounds remarkably better than the mp3 one, and uses less
bandwidth. The playlist is attached.
