[Bug 1734147] Re: corrupted BIOS due to Intel SPI bug in kernel

2018-03-04 Thread Rkimber
I think your problem is nothing to do with this BIOS bug.
Youn are giving a boot priority to the internal drive before the optic drive.
You should override the boot order by pressing a certain key such as F2, F8 and
F9 just after the booting.
Refer the manual of your machine to find out this boot order override key.

My point was that I have difficulty in changing the order, changes are not
permanent, and if it does boot from the CD it does not work in UEFI mode, and
so I cannot use e.g. Boot Repair.

Would it be harmful to use fix referred to above, or is that specific to
Lenovo?

[Bug 1688748] [NEW] login problems with 17.04

2017-05-06 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

After boot up I'm left with a screen with just the Ubuntu logo on it,
and nothing seems to be happening. Pressing Enter on the keyboard causes
login to proceed after a short pause.

I'm using Ubuntu Mate, configured with automatic login.

There is also another problem which may or may not be related. If I
leave the computer for a while, when I return the screen is unresponsive
to mouse clicks, and normal operation can only be restored by pressing
Enter on the keyboard.

Ok. I followed the instructions and attach the log I obtained. There
was no sound from a YouTube video in Firefox. However, the log may not
be relevant to the point about pulseaudio not starting when I start the
computer, since the instructions start pulseaudio from the command line.

[Bug 1604497] [NEW] Pulseaudio does not start

2016-07-19 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu Mate 16.04 with the current updates.

When I start the computer, pulseaudio is not working after I've logged
in.

If I type:
 start-pulseaudio-x11
from the command line, I get
"Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused"
and I cannot play any sound.

If I type pulseaudio& on the command line, I can get sound in some
applications (e.g. Audacity) but not others (e.g. Firefox or other
browsers). At some point a command line message appears that says: "E:
[pulseaudio] bluez5-util.c: GetManagedObjects() failed:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible
causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message
bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken."

I'm not clear why there's a reference to bluez5-util, since I don't have
bluetooth on my machine.

[Bug 1473429] [NEW] update-manager failes to install kernel security update

2015-07-10 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

Update-manager, which unaccountably appears on the screen labelled
'software updater', told me that a security update was available for the
kernel (Ubuntu Security Notice USN-2667-1). When I tried to install it
the progress window showed, but quickly closed without explanation.

In order to install the security update I had to do it from the command
line, using dist-upgrade.

In the past I have always been able to install security updates with
'software updater'.

[Bug 1311247] [NEW] error: malformed file, press any key to continue

2014-04-22 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

I have just upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04

Since the upgrade, when I boot up, the process stops and the normal grub
screen is replaced after a short while by a message saying

error: malformed file, press any key to continue

Pressing a key allows booting to continue.

Someone else who experienced this found that the problem went away after
having re-installed grub. I tried this but this did not resolve the
problem for me.

synaptic reports the grub package as 2.02~beta2-9

[Bug 809396] Re: screen corruption on changing desktops

2011-09-25 Thread Rkimber
Having experimented with KDE plasma, I can say that KDE does not suffer
the above screen corruption. KDE is also snappier and does not suffer
from the sluggishness that appeared recently in classic Ubuntu.

The only problem I can see with KDE plasma is that when you play with
the panel settings a black rectangle sometimes appears in the top left
of the screen. This goes away when you finalise the panel settings.

The conclusion I draw from this is that the problem might not be with
xserver-xorg-video-nv (Ubuntu) per se, but was likely introduced when
Unity was introduced (assuming that xserver-xorg-video-nv wasn't changed
to accommodate Unity - I don't know how these things interact).

[Bug 783960] Re: incorrect version number

2011-09-22 Thread Rkimber
I'm quite baffled by this now. When I first reported this it reported
that I was using 5.36.

Now, sudo /usr/sbin/smartctl -V reports:

smartctl 5.40 2010-07-12 r3124 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] (local build)

yet I have not built a local version, nor done anything that I can
remember other than doing updates via synaptic, which still reports
5.39.1+svn3124-2 as being installed. Though I think I did change the
server I was downloading from at some point.

I can't see anything in the repositories list that is unusual. Maybe I
could just remove it completely and re-install it, though presumably
11.10 will have 5.40 anyway so there's probably not a lot of point
pursuing this.

[Bug 809396] Re: screen corruption on changing desktops

2011-09-18 Thread Rkimber
I don't know if this is the same problem, but I notice that, with the
way I've got my panels organised (tabs for open programs at the top and
launcher icons at the bottom) sometimes a tab from another desktop shows
on the top panel. I attach a screenshot showing the tab for one of the
gimp windows showing in desktop2 - gimp is open in desktop3. In this
case the action of taking the screenshot has left out part of the tab
even though all of it is visible on the screen. But you can still see
that it's a gimp tab.

[Bug 809396] [NEW] screen corruption on changing desktops

2011-07-12 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

When I switch between desktops not only are the windows on the new
desktop drawn noticeably more slowly than under 10.10, but parts of
windows from the previous screen remain on the new screen until I do
something that causes the relevant window to be re-drawn. Sometimes the
corruption is in the form of bits of the window underneath showing on
top of what should be the current window, rather than bits left over
from the previous desktop. This corruption does not occur every single
time I switch, but it is very frequent. It also happens both with the
nv driver and with the current nvidia driver, which I would normally
use.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on an AMD Phenom2 x4 (3.0GHz) with 4GB and
nVidia 7600GS and did not experience the problem before upgrade. xorg is
1:7.6+4ubuntu3.1

[Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-06-12 Thread Rkimber
Emilio says that They are not currently in use is not just jockey not
detecting them. it's because they are really not being used.

On my machine, the driver (270.41.06) is in use according to nvidia
settings (and it reports a GPU temperature), nevertheless I get a this
driver is not activated message, and There are no proprietary drivers
in use.

I'm using Ubuntu classic desktop.

[Bug 783960] [NEW] incorrect version number

2011-05-17 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smartmontools

Synaptic says I'm using 5.39.1+svn3124-2, yet smartmontools itself
reports its version number as release 5.36 dated 2006/04/12 at 17:39:01
UTC. The current version, BTW, is 5.40.

I assume this has something to do with the fact that under Ubuntu 11.04
my disk tests no longer run, my disks are now said not to support SMART,
and I get error messages to standard commands that are recommended on
the smartmontools website - e.g.

sudo smartctl -q noserial -a /dev/sda

[Bug 547066] Re: Jockey doesn't show enabled nvidia drivers as such

2010-07-01 Thread Rkimber
I also still have this problem. The driver is reported as activated but
not in use, and no proprietary drivers are said to be in use.

I have 10.04 with jockey 0.5.8-0ubuntu8.1

xorg.conf is attached
Also, nvidia-settings works fine and a plausible GPU temperature is reported by
the, presumably proprietary, driver.

[Bug 401050] Re: webcheck -q not silent

2009-07-19 Thread Rkimber
I am now convinced that there are also other problems with the way
webcheck interprets options presented to it.

The --yank=PATTERN doesn't seem to work reliably. The man page says it
accepts perl-type regular expressions, but I have been unable to find
anything that works to exclude all URLs starting with /

It seems that the simplest of regular expressions (i.e. literal strings)
will work, as with the example on the manpage, but that metacharacters
and character classes do not work.

/[b] works, /[bcd] works for URLs starting with /b or /c or /d, even
though these don't match the full URL as the manpage requires, but
/[a-z] doesn't

^/.*$ seems to work with egrep but doesn't work with webcheck. It's all
very confusing

[Bug 368809] Re: ignore_nice_load ignored in processor scaling

2009-04-29 Thread Rkimber
Is this the cause of my problem?

I have noticed that since upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04, when running Boinc,
my CPUs are running about 14 degrees C hotter (at about 52C to 56C,
compared with roughly 38C to 43C before). When not running Boinc and
not using other apps, temperatures look much as they did before (28C to
34C).

Top reports boinc NI as 19, other apps seem to be 0, and system stuff is
all -5

I haven't noticed any reduction in processing time, though I don't have
any actual record to compare and don't actually know that I'm being sent
the same types of boinc jobs as before.

[Bug 368809] Re: ignore_nice_load ignored in processor scaling

2009-04-29 Thread Rkimber
I've discovered that the behaviour of the CPU frequency settings has
changed. The monitor applet offers 4 settings: conservative,
ondemand, performance, and powersave.

Previously, the ondemand setting only pushed cpu frequency up to 100%
when I invoked a foreground process, like indexing a lot of usenet
articles. Boinc processes niced at 19, which ran all the time, were run
at a lower frequency.

Now, ondemand seems to run Boinc (NI 19) at 100%, and when boinc is
not running and I invoke other processes (NI 0) it seems, subjectively,
much slower to push up to 100% than before, though that might be a
function of the monitor applet.

As far as I can see on my PC, there isn't any practical difference
between conservative and powersave, nor between ondemand and
performance when I'm running something like boinc that runs
continually.

I haven't yet located the documentation that defines these governors and
how they should work.

[Bug 297356] Re: tools not working in GIMP (8.10)

2008-11-12 Thread Rkimber
As per Murphy's (or whoever) Law, after filing the bug I've found the
solution/work-around.

I went into the Gimp preferences and added ~/.fonts to the fontpath.
After that Gimp seemed to function normally, though I haven't tested
everything.

The question remains, however, as to why it wouldn't work with what I
take is a default install.

[Bug 294738] [NEW] Mouse button problem in 8.10

2008-11-06 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

I have a Logitech LX7 usb/wireless mouse on my amd64x2 system. The mouse
has the normal three buttons (left, right, and wheel) plus two small
thumb buttons.

Under 8.04 I was able to use the left thumb button to paste text from
the clipboard. This was important because the middle (wheel) button is
not accurate enough when positioning inserts.

Under 8.10 the left thumb button no longer pastes from the clipboard,
though the wheel still does, and there appears to be no obvious means of
configuring it to do so.

X seems to think I have a Macintosh mouse:

I thought that SMP required ACPI, but I'm not an expert. I'm using

[Bug 130224] Re: gtkfilechooser save/save as dialog misplaces focus

2008-05-12 Thread Rkimber
The situation as I see it now is that if (say, in Bluefish) I want to
save a file as 'filename.htm' I choose 'save as' and the original
'filename' is highlighted so that I can type over it if I want (though
I'm not sure why it assumes I always want to keep the same htm
'extension'). That much works fine.

But if I click on another file and type anything, the name field goes
blank and further typing opens a small text field further down the
window. It's not clear what (if anything) this does. Similarly, the
name field goes blank if I click on another directory.

Surely all we need is that the original filename is highlighted and
active, and remains highlighted and active until we type over it, or
press 'save'.

I'm using ubuntu 8.04, with libgtk2 (2.19.9-3Ubuntu3)

On my asus M2N-E amd64x2 with ubunutu 7.10

[Bug 186052] [NEW] gedit save as problem

2008-01-25 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 7.0
gedit 2.20.3-0ubuntu1
amd64

When I choose 'save as' for a new file, the filename comes up (as
expected) as Unsaved Document 1. However it is displayed highlighted.
The normal expectation in this situation is that this means that it is
selected, and that typing anything replaces the highlighted text.

However, this is not what happens, and any key presses cause directories
or files to be highlighted in the file list. Also, pressing 'delete'
does not remove the highlighted default name.

This is annoying because (a) for a new file it is more likely that it
will require a name that does not appear in the current list of files,
and (b) as explained above, it violates the normal convention
established across operating systems over the years.

[Bug 156284] Re: synaptic won't save selections

2008-01-20 Thread Rkimber
Ah. I'm sorry. It's possible that the bottom part of the window with
the checkbox got hidden. Yes it works. It was zero length because
there were no current markings. I was trying to save everything.

However, might I suggest that a better way would be to have a separate
menu item along the lines of save markings for all installed packages
rather than having the checkbox as an option at the bottom of the
window.

My guess is (i.e. no evidence for this) that most people are more likely
to want to save the whole state than a few incremental markings.

Perhaps the best option would be, when save markings is chosen, to have
a small dialog open asking whether you want all of them or just the
current markings.

[Bug 160189] compiz problem with screensaver

2007-11-05 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

With visual effects set to 'normal' I have a problem with the
screensaver. This happens with both the default screensaver and with
xscreensaver.

My machine is on overnight. When I try to use it first thing in the
morning, it takes a long time after pressing a key for the screen to be
unblanked. I would estimate this takes nearly a minute. During this
time one of my CPUs is 100% utilised.

The strange thing is that this only happens after an overnight period of
inactivity. If I haven't used the machine during the day the screen has
(so far) always been restored quite quickly (2 or 3 seconds).

If I set visual effects to 'none' the problem goes away.

2007-10-23 Thread Rkimber
I did that, but it didn't solve anything. The machine was indeed left
in a unusable state. The only thing I could do was a complete install
from the CD, which I have now done, including of course re-formatting
the partitions with log files on (unless they were written to /home,
which seems unlikely).

Had there been more helpful information in the message about saving
particular logs, etc., I would have done that if possible.

Actually, this is not the first time an upgrade has failed. I've
usually had to re-install, and I now always take the precaution of
downloading the CD first.
