  = Discussion =

  == Packaging ==
  5.1 in Universe
   - provides safe upgrade path
  5.5 in Main

  == Ideas ==
  - mysql-server depends on mysql_alternative_1 OR mysql_alternative_2 OR ...
(requires alternatives to be in Main)
  - unique source package for all alternatives
  - parallel instalation of alternatives

  == ACTIONS ==
Find a way to package and MariaDB!

  - MySQL 5.5 into Debian and Oneiric Soon
  - Change mysql-server to a virtual package which depends on
mysql-server-5.5 | percona-server-5.5 | mariadb-server-5.5 ?
  - Drizzle is probably enoug of a fork that it cannot be included in the
'mysql-server' depends
  - libmysqlclient should come from upstream
  - What about plugins like XtraBackup and Handlersocket?

  = Comments =

  * Dont forget to do rebuilds for the newer libmysqlclient16 to
  libmysqlclient17.

  Ubuntu Orchestra Server
A collection of the best free software services useful in hosting enterprise
data center infrastructure services, based on the Ubuntu Server

  https://launchpad.net/orchestra
  bzr lp:orchestra
  ppa:orchestra/ppa

Provisioning Server ( Cobbler, PXE, tftp, ... )

  Caching/Proxy/Mirroring ( squid-deb-proxy, debmirror )

Management ( puppet, ensemble?, chef?, etc. )

  Orchestration ( mcollective, ... )
  `
Monitoring ( rsyslog, collectd, nagios? )

Power Management ( powernap, IPMI?, fence-agents, NUT )
   - PowerNap Server, overtime, should handle IPMI/UPS/etc. Up for discussion
in PowerNap session.
   - fence-agents
   - IPMI integrates full power-down, beyond WOL, CPU Idle, etc.
   - Network UPS Tools (NUT) already handles UPS and PDU natively, and
IPMI/ALOM/ILO through PowerMan

*Remote Web UI ( Landscape? )

  = Requests / Other items =
   * request from Spads in IRC for gpxe support in cobbler
   * Swapping out tftp for http allows you greater debugging and control in
your autoinstall behaviors.
   * Many problems reduced to write a web app
   * smoser thinks that cloud-init might need some changes that make it more
consumable here. Some of the upstart jobs that it does to make it run really
early might cause issues with networking being less reliable or predictable.
this is really just a warning / admission that there might be issues. i *do*
think that there needs to be one single thing that does initial first boot
installation.
    * It might be useful to allow at the cobbler (or provisioning level)
user-data that then would get to cloud-init.
    * somewhat obvious thought... would potentially be nice if there was an
ec2-like api cobbler/orchestra
   * cloud-init should be treated as the configuration management bootloader,
i.e., the gateway to being managed by puppet/chef/ensemble/rightscale/etc
   * initial pxe boot image on the network should be a collect data and report
it image. Then, when a new system is plugged into the network it will boot
that image, and report back its mac and cpu/meminfo/disk...

  == Actions ==
  - pre-execution environment ( boot, collect data about system, report to
cobbler )
  - discovery step
  - hardware configuration

[Bug 836014] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2011-09-01 Thread Robbie Williamson
WORKAROUND: I found that this bug only occurs when I boot and login
with my laptop unplugged. If I plug in, logout, and then log back in,
my desktop environment is correct. Suspend/Resume and unplugging (but
not logging out) works thereafter.

SEVERITY QUESTION: I would argue that given this is 100% reproducible
for me (and others judging by the dups), that this bug is at least a
**High**, as it severely impacts the usability of the system.

[Bug 833087] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2011-08-24 Thread Robbie Williamson
After getting this error, my desktop looked like an odd mix of Unity and
KDE...I logged out and logged back in, and things seem to have resolved,
so possibly just a one time upgrade issue. Given this error is reported
a bazillion times and this wasn't a serious issue, I'm closing this bug.

[Bug 811915] Re: gwibber-accounts crashed with TypeError in __init__(): Gtk.Window.set_icon_from_file() argument 1 must be string, not None

2011-08-03 Thread Robbie Williamson
Curious...what's the reasoning behind marking this bug as medium.
Basically gwibber is broken, because you can't add any accounts, so I
would think this to be a High/Critical issue. Is this only affecting
people with existing accounts, i.e. an upgrade? Is there a workaround
to avoid this? Does this only happen for a specific Oneiric
configuration? Not trying to be an @$$, just wanting to understand the
reason for the Medium importance classification.

I got this bug and found that if I disconnected using the GUI, and then
reconnected from command-line: u1sdtool --connect, the problem went
away. Maybe this is simply U1 needing to be restarted once couch-db is

@SL: No, with the workaround, I can touch icons to start and move
windows as well. I'm also able to do two-finger zoom with Firefox..so I
**think* it's working, but still need to do a bit of testing. I'm also
using Oneiric, so different version of the kernel and other related

[Bug 787781] Re: Touch screen does not work with single finger touch, Lenovo x220 tablet

2011-07-29 Thread Robbie Williamson
I just installed Oneiric with todays latest updates on my x220 tablet, as well
as the utouch related packages. The touchscreen worked fine with the pen
device, but acted like a large touchpad when using my finger. I followed the
steps in entry #29 in this ubuntu forum thread:
  http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1785015page=3
and now it works. The summary of steps is:
 1) downloaded xf86-input-wacom-0.11.1.tar.bz2 (the latest)
 2) run `./configure --prefix=/usr` to make sure things are installed in the
right places
 3) modify conf/50-wacom.conf according to the forum entry to include
ISD-V4 in the MatchProduct line
 4) ran a make/make install, and rebooted.

Before trying this, I simply tried adding ISD-V4 to 50-wacom.conf in
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d and copying over to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, and
that didn't do anything. I'm thinking, but can't confirm, that we may
just need to update our version to match upstream.

[Bug 589057] Re: help.ubuntu.com still uses old logo/branding

2011-07-15 Thread Robbie Williamson
Can we PLEASE get this fixed? Having the old branding implies the
information is old/out-dated, and documentation (while useful for
Desktop) is ***ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL FOR SERVER***. Who moved
wiki.ubuntu.com? Why can't we have the same folks do help.ubuntu.com?
I also don't understand the help.ubuntu.com is completely community
driven, and the community is responsible for providing the updated
theme statement...what does that mean in terms of trying to fix this
bug?

[Blueprint server-o-eucalyptus] Eucalyptus 3.0 Integration

2011-06-21 Thread Robbie Williamson
Blueprint changed by Robbie Williamson:

Whiteboard changed:
  Work items:
- Move Eucalytpus to Partner Archive: TODO
+ Move Eucalytpus to Partner or Universe archive per their request: TODO
Sync with Eucalyptus 3.0 packages: TODO
QA the install and basic operations of Eucalyptus 3.0 packages: TODO

Spreadsheet of Eucalyptus 3.0 java dependencies is here:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Apucj69pH0mddEhmY3V0U0ZCT0ozQzI0NkN3SmRPeUEhl=enauthkey=CNnPz7oC

  * Required packages in universe need MIR
  * Eucalyptus needs to audit versions to determine whether an exact version is
needed
  * Specifically, it is known that gwt 2.0 is critical
  * The following are completely new packages not yet in main or universe:
     - activemq
     - ha-jdbc
     - infinispan
     - jminix
     - restlet
     - rhq
     - guava
  * Several packages may need to be built differently so that more jars are
present in the binary package:
    - libjibx-java
    - libmule-2.0-java
    - libproxool-java

[Blueprint server-o-ensemble] Get Ensemble into Ubuntu

2011-06-03 Thread Robbie Williamson
Blueprint changed by Robbie Williamson:

Whiteboard changed:
  Work Items:
[clint-fewbar] Prepare txzookeeper packaging for upload to Ubuntu: TODO
[clint-fewbar] Get txzookeeper sponsored into Debian: TODO
[clint-fewbar] Upload latest zookeeper to Ubuntu: TODO
[clint-fewbar] Submit debdiff of latest zookeeper to Debian: TODO
[txaws-admins] release txaws with fixes needed by ensemble: TODO
[clint-fewbar] Prepare ensemble package for upload to Ubuntu: TODO
- [niemeyer] Ensemble Daily PPA: TODO
+ [niemeyer] Ensemble Daily PPA: DONE

== The road to main for ensemble ==

  1. When do we want that to happen?

  - 11.10 Ensemble in Universe, problem, ensemble is rapidly developing
  how to deal with updates.

Ensemble can't be frozen past a stable release. We need to deploy new
features for the project to be successful.

  Two possible approaches:

  - Use a PPA (simpler, works well)
  - Do SRUs every month or so (much more heavy weight, apparently unnecessary)

We'll probably be going with the second option.

  2. What do we need to get done for this to happen?

  Needed dependencies:

  - txzookeeper (not packaged yet)
  - txaws (must be upgraded)
  - zookeeper (needs patches which were already pushed upstream)

  3. Strategies for upgrading?

  4. Etc.

  Sample interaction with Ensemble:

  $ ensemble bootstrap
  # Creates some files in ~/.ensemble/
  $ ensemble bootstrap
  # Creates the first instance of Ensemble on EC2
  $ ensemble deploy wordpress
  $ ensemble deploy mysql
  $ ensemble add-relation wordpress mysql

This requires AWS credentials in the environment.

The mysql instance can be reused across services.

  Tasks

   - [niemeyer] Ensemble Daily PPA.

  Questions

   - Zookeeper Packages
   - python zookeeper
   - txaws package updates
   - ensemble package
   - principia package?

[Blueprint server-o-complex-deployment-testing] Automated Complex Server Deployment Testing

2011-06-03 Thread Robbie Williamson
Blueprint changed by Robbie Williamson:

Whiteboard changed:
+ Work items:
+ Base framework to support complex deployment testing: TODO
+ Configurations for complex deployment scenarios (may overlap with formulas
and recipes): TODO
+ Update ISO testing to deal with server ISO refactoring work: TODO
+ ec2 testing configuration for kernel team patch testing work: TODO
+
  UDS-O Session Notes:

  1) Complex Deployment Testing

Alot of Ubuntu server deployments are much more than an ISO install on a
single node; however this is pretty much the limit of the automated ISO
  testing that we currently complete.

We should aim to target some complex Ubuntu server deployment scenarios
for regular automated testing during the release cycle.

  This could be implemented either in the cloud or using virtualization;
ensemble and cobbler+puppet might form part of the solution.

  2) Automated Boot testing

As we make changes to the boot/shutdown sequence of the server, and
migrate init.d scripts to upstart jobs, we need some continuous
integration testing to make sure it continues to work. We should take
advantage of the automated testing framework to install, reboot,
shutdown, start, remove, and repeat with all packages that are changed.
We should also automate this testing with all of the available tasks on
the install CDs. In addition, we should collect metrics on boot time and
  how each package affects it.

  hggdh:
   * we need to test iso install
   * want to do a single install and create gold copy
   * need test do-release-upgrade

  High Level Test Objectives:
  -

  a) Deployment Testing:

  i) ISO Image Proving

RAID testing (N.B. For raid testing also see:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/foundations-o-software-raid
and/or etherpad until blueprint updated)
  LVM testing
  Multipath and encryption

Existing ISO testing framework should deal with this.

  ii) AMI Image Proving

Existing ec2 testing framework should deal with this.

  b) Package Removal Testing:

  - install services
  - start services
  - check services
  - stop services
  - uninstall services
  - re-install same services
  - start re-check services

  c) Phase 2 - Service Proving

Deployment of service and pluggable testing

Deploy through orchestra and/or ensemble - which would allow testing of
recipes and formulas as well (+1)

  Framework required for executing tests once deployment complete;
mcollective could be used to distribute and execute tests; maybe still
  use python unittests;

  d) Automated Boot Testing:

Minimal install - startup and shutdown OK
Full install - startup and shutdown OK
  Complete upgrade and then re-test.

  e) Upgrade Testing:

  Lucid-Maverick-Natty for example.

Need to catchup with mvo in this area - suspect some sort of gold-copy
  type setup might make sense.

  f) Recovery Testing:

  Recovery Mode Testing:

  Complex Deployment Scenarios:

Wiki + Database + Memcache + Load Balancer
Bridging and bonding of network interfaces
  Networking File Systems
  Openstack Deployment test
  Launchpad
Samba + LDAP or Kerberos Backend
  Backup solutions.
  Ruby on Rails stack?

  Requirements:

  Remote testing of services.

Possibly ask community to donate resources for optional tests

data center infrastructure services, based on the Ubuntu Server

  https://launchpad.net/orchestra
  bzr lp:orchestra
  ppa:orchestra/ppa

Provisioning Server ( Cobbler, PXE, tftp, ... )

  Caching/Proxy/Mirroring ( squid-deb-proxy, debmirror )

Management ( puppet, ensemble?, chef?, etc. )

  Orchestration ( mcollective, ... )
  `
Monitoring ( rsyslog, collectd, nagios? )

Power Management ( powernap, IPMI?, fence-agents, NUT )
- - PowerNap Server, overtime, should handle IPMI/UPS/etc. Up for discussion
in PowerNap session.
- - fence-agents
- - IPMI integrates full power-down, beyond WOL, CPU Idle, etc.
- - Network UPS Tools (NUT) already handles UPS and PDU natively, and
IPMI/ALOM/ILO through PowerMan

  = Requests / Other items =
- * request from Spads in IRC for gpxe support in cobbler
- * Swapping out tftp for http allows you greater debugging and control in
your autoinstall behaviors.
- * Many problems reduced to write a web app
- * smoser thinks that cloud-init might need some changes that make it more
consumable here. Some of the upstart jobs that it does to make it run really
early might cause issues with networking being less reliable or predictable.
this is really just a warning / admission that there might be issues. i *do*
think that there needs to be one single thing that does initial first boot
installation.
- * It might be useful to allow at the cobbler (or provisioning level)
user-data that then would get to cloud-init.
- * somewhat obvious thought... would potentially be nice if there was an
ec2-like api cobbler/orchestra
- * cloud-init should be treated as the configuration management bootloader,
i.e., the gateway to being managed by puppet/chef/ensemble/rightscale/etc
- * initial pxe boot image on the network should be a collect data and report
it image. Then, when a new system is plugged into the network it will boot
that image, and report back its mac and cpu/meminfo/disk...

  === SESSION NOTES ===

  == Actions ==
  - pre-execution environment ( boot, collect data about system, report to
cobbler )
  - discovery step
  - hardware configuration
