It just dawned on me that this might be happening after upgrades to

[Bug 1077201] Re: Unity Launcher steals minimize app animation end point from other docks

2012-11-09 Thread Robert Dyer
There is actually nothing that can be done here. Only 1 location on the
screen can be the icon region for an application. If you run more than
1 dock, then they will (at best) fight to set that region. Unity
updates the region more often than say Docky, so it 'wins' in that
situation. There is nothing the docks (or Unity) can do here.

[Bug 1077201] Re: Unity Launcher steals minimize app animation end point from other docks

2012-11-09 Thread Robert Dyer
Also think about the general problem you are seeing. Your application
has 2 locations on the screen that have a launcher for it: one on Unity
and one on some other dock. How is the system supposed to know which
of those 2 it should animate the minimize to?

You can solve the problem by only having ONE of the 2 contain a launcher
for the program. So between Unity's launcher and other dock your
application only appears on one of the two. In that case, it should
work as expected.

[Bug 1077201] Re: Unity Launcher steals minimize app animation end point from other docks

2012-11-09 Thread Robert Dyer
The panels also caused the problem. It is just that the frequency with
which the panels updated the icon regions was (most likely) much less,
so the dock would 'win' in that situation. Unity, as far as I know,
updates the regions much more frequently (at least in comparison to
Docky and Plank, which I work on). Thus Unity typically 'wins' against
other docks.

[Bug 1077201] Re: Unity Launcher steals minimize app animation end point from other docks

2012-11-09 Thread Robert Dyer
If I'm not mistaking, that would make Docky win again Maybe. Maybe
not. The point here is that they are both contending to set that
geometry, so if Docky starts updating more frequently then you'll
probably see much more non-deterministic behavior. They will fight even
more!

can anything be done to actually change the Desktop Environment, so
that more than just one location on the screen can be the icon region
for a window? This is actually part of the WM standard, changing this
is a lot more involved than you probably realize.

why can't we simply have an option to have an animation's start/end
point move to the cursor for minimizing/restoring, just like we have it
for open/close? You can, just ask Compiz for that feature. The
animations are drawn by Compiz. However I make no promise that they
would implement that. Personally, I think that is a bad solution and I
wouldn't implement it.

There is one option you seem to be missing: stop using Unity. Switch
over to something else, like XFCE.

[Bug 1049279] [NEW] Launcher shows progress for every item and missing items

2012-09-11 Thread Robert Dyer
Public bug reported:

The launcher is drawing items incorrectly. The visible items all have a
progress bar shown, though no progress is initiated by those apps. Some
items are pushed 'up' and not visible, though if I move the mouse into
the blank spaces I get hovers for the items I can't see. The hovers
display at the proper Y location, however they trigger at the wrong Y
location. The mouse triggers the hovers roughly proportional in the
empty space (IE, if the space is 320px tall and I'm missing 4 items then
every 80px I move up triggers the next item).

Note that the visible items all have proper hovers and display menus.
They behave proper, other than showing progress bars.

I am not sure what triggered this bug. I first noticed it when I saw
the launcher visible on my lock screen, though it may have occurred
prior to that. I do not have steps to reproduce (I have only seen this
happen once).

Please see picture for more details.

Invalid states it is 'not a bug.' A bug that 'cannot be verified'

[Bug 1036944] [NEW] Spreading workspaces with multiple monitors displays wrong

2012-08-14 Thread Robert Dyer
Public bug reported:

I attached an external monitor to my laptop. The configuration is to
span the monitors (no mirror):

left monitor: 1680x1050
right monitor: 1920x1200

they are aligned so the top edges match

I spread the workspaces (Super+S) and the display seems wrong. All of
the workspaces (for both monitors) appear on the left monitor, and about
80% of the workspaces appear on the right monitor. See attached image.

I expected either a split (50/50) or duplication (100% on both).

Note that when I changed the right monitor's resolution to 1680x1050,
spreading now does a 50/50 split (as expected?). See second attached
image.

[Bug 1014346] Re: give a way to remove 'Show Desktop' from the Alt-Tab items

2012-08-03 Thread Robert Dyer
Just an FYI, if you accidentally 'show desktop' and lose your windows
just alt-tab to 'show desktop' again. You don't have to visit each
window to bring them back, it acts like a toggle.

[Bug 836023] Re: New Unity Alt-Tab switcher window is slow to appear

2012-06-26 Thread Robert Dyer
I can only test on one of the systems (as I removed Unity from the other
for being way too slow). But on the GeForce 8600 GT (G84) 512MB system
it is still slow. I estimate around 500-800ms. Compared to my laptop
(ATI FireGL 5250) it is most definitely noticeably slower.

[Bug 924472] Re: Add option to hide 'Show Desktop' in switcher

2012-06-25 Thread Robert Dyer
The switcher is highly inconsistent. Sometimes I hit alt-tab and it
does nothing (refocus the active window). Sometimes it will switch
apps. Sometimes it switches windows within the same app. It is almost
so non-deterministic that I can't actually tell what the intended
behavior is.

At any rate, I don't care to have 'show desktop' in the alt-tab *at all*
because like you, I randomly accidentally trigger it and I almost never
actually want to show my desktop.

[Bug 928807] Re: Maximized windows cast shadows on adjacent monitors

2012-06-21 Thread Robert Dyer
I should note that this does not just affect multimon setups. I have a
single monitor with the default 4 workspaces and see this bug.
Maximized window on the top-right workspace casts a shadow onto windows
on the top-left. In fact, non-maximized windows also cast if I just
move them to the right edge of the screen.

From the duplicate bug:

layout of my windows on the screen:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/104261481/bug-spread.png

image of the bug casting a shadow onto Chrome:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/104261466/bug-shadow.png

Note the lack of multimon and lack of maximized window causing this
issue.

[Bug 928807] Re: Maximized windows cast shadows on adjacent monitors

2012-06-21 Thread Robert Dyer
I should also point out that the stacking order of the windows matters.

If I click on the empathy window (top-right, which casts the shadow)
then move to the top-left workspace I see the bug. If I then click on
the Chrome window (which already has focus!) the shadow goes away. It
won't come back unless I click on the Empathy window (even if I switch
back to that workspace and Empathy has focus).

[Bug 870284] Re: Dash/HUD should close on Spread

2012-06-15 Thread Robert Dyer
Note that this also affects the HUD. Press ALT to bring up HUD, then
press the keys to spread windows (Super+W) and it will (un)spread behind
the HUD. It also types a 'w' into the HUD. Most likely, HUD should
hide when the spread happens.

[Bug 994203] Re: Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

2012-05-30 Thread Robert Dyer
I'm having a similar bug with the radeon driver. Randomly (though often
when watching youtube) the screen would just stop updating. I could
move the mouse cursor around and I think it was accepting keyboard input
but nothing on the screen updated. I could ctrl-alt-f1 over and kill
the x session and everything would be fine for awhile again.

However, for me it just started happening which led me to test if it was
related to recent kernel upgrades. I rebooted with 3.2.0-23 and now I
don't seem to have this bug! I did not test 3.2.0-24, but I definitely
see the bug with 3.2.0-25.

2012-05-02 Thread Robert Dyer
I'm on Precise (with -proposed enabled), ATI FireGL 5200 with open

My launcher is set to autohide and I can interact with it via mouse,
making it show/hide. The launcher also updates to show
notifications/progress bars of items, so it isn't just a cached image
showing up. I can't left or right click on items, thankfully.

Also note that for me, if I hit super (for dash) it does not display.
But dash does open in the background so that if I then log in it is
already disabled.

If I hold down super, then the shortcut keys help page displays over the
login box. The launcher also overlays the shortcut's onto the items.

12.04, I will get a working hack in place but I am still on 10.10 and
the docklets work fine for me. ;-)

[Bug 734490] Re: networkmanager docklet doesn't work with NetworkManager-0.8.4

2012-04-15 Thread Robert Dyer
I temporarily pushed the 'hack' fix that will at least allow the
docklets to use networking if it is available. It also means they will
keep trying to update even if your networking is missing. But I think
this is a better way to break.

[Bug 924501] [NEW] Muting sound hides indicator

2012-01-31 Thread Robert Dyer
Public bug reported:

Upon logging in, there was no sound indicator visible. I determined
that as long as the output volume is muted, the indicator is hidden.
Toggling mute hides/shows the indicator.

What I expected to see: always show the indicator, regardless of mute.
This is because I have no hardware keys to control volume, so if I mute
it (and the indicator hides) I must now go digging through the system
menus to find and unmute the output.

Observed behavior: muting the output hides the indicator.

Note: this system was recently upgraded from 10.10 - 11.04 - 11.10.

[Bug 836023] Re: New compiz alt-tab switcher window is slow to appear

(GeForce 8600 GT (G84) 512MB and Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI (NV41GL)

I would estimate (with only 2 apps open) that it takes anywhere from

[Bug 734490] Re: networkmanager docklet doesn't work with NetworkManager-0.8.4

2011-12-05 Thread Robert Dyer
If you don't mind hacking the Docky source and compiling it yourself, it
is easy to disable that check. Just comment out lines 121, 124, and 156
in the file: Docky.Services/Docky.Services/SystemService.cs

Then recompile and install it and it will just assume it is always
connected and ignore NM.

This obviously isn't a proper fix, hence why we haven't pushed this hack
ourselves.

[Bug 811826] Re: Not possible for other docks to use Unity LauncherAPI

2011-09-06 Thread Robert Dyer
Since the unity team came up with their own API instead of using
DockManager, and due to the pushing of it by Canonical and thus lots of
apps adopting that API (in favor of DockManager), Michal Hruby and I
decided to just stop supporting DockManager. Thus, all docks will (most
likely) start supporting the unity API instead.

So this bug will now affect any dock that might support that: DockbarX,
AWN, Docky, Plank, etc.

The poster's hack seems reasonable (as a hack), in that it is probably
rare that users would want to run more than one dock at the same time.
But hopefully there is a better solution.

[Bug 511511] Re: Can't launch file managers

2011-06-17 Thread Robert Dyer
Let me be quite blunt about why this bug is not fixed in Docky. I
believe it is either a problem with Nautilus or whatever session manager
you use. Here is my logic.

The bug only happens when Docky auto-starts, usually via a session
manager (gnome-session, etc). Docky will inherit the environment *at
the point it starts*. Thus, I believe the issue is that something in
the environment is not set prior to Docky auto-starting and Nautilus
will not work (without an explicit path passed in!) without whatever
that missing environment is.

So either, Nautilus has a bug and needs to be smarter and start without
that environment (seems reasonable to me... if I ask Nautilus to start,
why won't it show a window??).

Or you need a session manager smart enough to order the startup such
that Docky starts after whatever starts that sets up that missing
environment.

In either case, there is nothing Docky can do. I have been kind enough
to not mark this a Invalid/WontFix, mostly so it shows up in our bug
list. But basically I consider it a non-Docky bug and thus it is out of
my hands.

PS, this logic applies to any app having this issue such as Plank and
Slingshot.

I mean think about it people, Docky (plank/slingshot) is running the
command 'nautilus' (and you can indeed verify it runs this, and Nautilus
just exits). What more can we possibly do?

Look at the path of the error. This file is provided BY dockmanager.
The icon packages are the (broken) packages overwriting the file. The

[Bug 511511] Re: Nautilus not start

2011-04-11 Thread Robert Dyer
@Peter, it is very deterministic. The problem only manifests when Docky
auto-starts. When that happens, Nautilus fails to launch. I believe
the issue is that some environment variable(s) are not fully set at that
point, Docky inherits that (incomplete) environment, and then passes it
on to Nautilus when it launches.

The solution is to start Docky after your desktop has loaded. If you
auto-start, close and restart Docky and it works perfect.

The other solution is to edit your launcher to add the 'space period' at
the end of the exec. With this solution, Nautilus always launches.

[Bug 382705] Re: docky grouped menu titles are too narrow / truncated

2011-04-10 Thread Robert Dyer
Let's see a screenshot of this 'problem' in Docky 2.x please. As far as
I am concerned, the behavior in 2.x is perfectly fine and as intended.

2011-04-08 Thread Robert Dyer
Lol, read your own 'binary package hint' in your bug report. This is a
gnome-do bug, not a docky bug!

FYI, Docky is no longer part of Gnome Do. It has been a stand-alone
project for several YEARS. You seriously need to upgrade.

Docky is currently released 2.2.0. You are using 1.0 version, which
was previously integrated with Do.

Why would I do that? This 'defect' doesn't affect me. If it affects
you, feel free to file a NEW bug against docky.

@Michael: so it was your fail... why did you assign this bug to docky?
You shouldn't change bug data unless you are on one of the projects
involved.

[Bug 531568] Re: Suspending and hibernating does not work when launched from Do

I highly recommend NOT grabbing random people's pre-compiled binaries.
Just grab the source code and compile it yourself - it isn't that hard!

[Bug 531568] Re: Suspending and hibernating does not work when launched from Do

2011-04-03 Thread Robert Dyer
I believe two things have to happen.

1) an 'upstream' release of Do (this is a general release, bumps the version
number) - RAOF just did this recently
2) a 'downstream' package release in Ubuntu - RAOF (I believe, again) did this
for Natty which means this update will be in Natty

For older Ubuntus, they are maintenance only. You have to basically
backport it. No one wants to do that. :-p

It's all a bit fuzzy to me as I generally let other people handle
packaging stuff (RAOF is the guy for Do). But that's my general
understanding of it.

It is not a Docky bug, thus there is no 'solution' for it in Docky.
Anything done to Docky would be a hack to work around the bug in gnome
session.

I offer the solution of fixing the bug *in Gnome Session*, where it
exists.

[Bug 695664] Re: unity launcher lost track of chromium browser showing two icons for it

2011-01-16 Thread Robert Dyer
Is it possible you edited your launcher to add flags (such as --enable-*
dev options) when launching Chromium? If so, there would be 2 launchers
for Chromium (one in /usr/share/applications and one in
~/.local/share/applications).

I have such a setup and BAMF matches the Chromium application to the
/usr/share/applications launcher, which is wrong. In such a case, Unity
would most likely show 2 icons. (NOTE: I have never run Unity and thus
am speculating, but the problem I mention definitely exists in BAMF,
which I am running).
