[Bug 316140] Re: wikipedia tab shows only languages block
Well, not knowing that there existed some patches, I made my own. The "fix released" seems to be for amarok 2, AFAIUI. The patch attached to this is meant to be used with Amarok 1.4. It is based on my discoveries and incorporates some suggestions from people here. Oh, and providing a binary-only package doesn't really help us who run other architectures. Please, keep this bug private, as it may have confidential information, as my father was using the computer as a way to try Ubuntu, but only now I noticed that it had some problems (he doesn't understand English and the messages shown by apport-gtk were in English). Anyway, if this is a duplicate, just merge it with other bugs. I just figured it out that it would be better to send an extra report than to not send anything. Regards, Rogério Brito. [Bug 442803] [NEW] powepc cd images either oversized or not currently built
Public bug reported: Hi. For some weeks now, I have been trying to get a live CD to test Ubuntu with an iBook G3, 600MHz, Combo, 12" (the 'almost netbook one') and my successive visits to cdimage.ubuntu.com have not turned many encouraging results. I am aware that some of the earlier bug reports say that Daily CDs were not produced for PowerPCs. This is not exactly what I am talking about. Most of the time, I *can* find a Daily CD for PowerPC, but, unfortunately, they are almost always oversized and don't fit on a 700MB cd, which is one of the only possibilities for me to test newer releases. More precisely speaking, I am not able to find a "vanilla" (Mac) PowerPC Daily-Live ("desktop) CD, nor a Daily ("alternate") CD, with both of them frequently oversized. This not only happens with Ubuntu proper, but also with Xubuntu and with Kubuntu. Is there anything that I could do here to help you guys? I am willing to join the efforts so that we can actually get a good Free Software release for "Apple-orphaned" computers that are working perfectly and, with the release of Snow Leopard, it seems that Apple has dropped every support for PowerPCs (of course, their cash-cow of iTunes + iTunes Music Store is still supported, but no updates for people like me that have G3-based systems and are stuck with MacOS X 10.4 and ancient software for development---Python 2.3 is the first that comes to mind). This would, of course, be a superb opportunity to get a Free Software to liberate the potential of said machines so that they can run modern applications having productivity features for the users. This could easily be an advertising point for the release or karmic and getting everything packaged on an even finer level for the LTS distribution would bring peace of mind for Mac users that have already invested a good quantity of money on hardware that is already working to their expectations (especially for people in parts of the world where upgrading hardware is not as easy as in others). So, if I could find CDs like the beta release or the release candidate, I would be glad to help (well, actually, even testing a non-formal pre- release would be nice). So, if anything can be done, just let me know. Regards, Rogério. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- powepc cd images either oversized or not currently built https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442803 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Some points here: * vrms has this behaviour appropriately documented (by Bdale, after a short discussion that we had on the debian-vrms mailing list) that the program has this name based on the original ideal of providing only Free Software. * for practical purposes, the decision of what is Free Software takes into consideration the section of the packages: if a potential distribution would package non-free software in a main repository, then vrms would not be able to provide a description of which programs are or are not Free Software. Indeed, if a packager prepares a package of some proprietary software, how can a program detect if the binary code of that package is or is not Free Software? There are no syntatic rules for this, I am afraid. This problem is essentially of human interpretation---and, indeed, even humans can't reach a consensus regarding what they consider Free. But suggestions and patches for vrms are welcome, of course. [Bug 144006] The behavior of vrms
Hi. The situation that you are complaining about is that vrms takes into account the section of the packages. In general, if the section of a package doesn't match what its copyright says, then the package has a bug and it should be fixed ASAP. If the section of a package in Ubuntu matches the policy of what Ubuntu considers free and non-free (i.e., restricted or multiverse), then vrms will work perfectly according to what the users of Ubuntu expect. BTW, despite being a Debian Maintainer, I use Ubuntu exclusively on a laptop of mine that I use daily---and I'm testing it with karmic. There is, in my view, no need to keep patches to vrms confined in Ubuntu. I think that I will close this bug with a new upload of vrms (which I hope is considered by inclusion in time for karmic's release). [Bug 404434] Re: I can not disable touchpad through "gnome-mouse-properties"
Hi there. I have *exactly* the opposite problem: I'm using the most up-to-date karmic possible, I have a Dell Latitude D520 and I want to use the touchpad with tapping, but I have not succeded with using "gnome-mouse- properties" or with "gpointing-device-settings". Changing the xorg.conf to have hard-coded settings does not work (it just seems to be read according to the log, but things like, say, the keyboard layout specified there and the dontzap option seem to be ignored completely). Anyway, the only workaround that I found was to use: synclient TapButton1=1 TapButton2=2 TapButton3=3 due to upstream's decision of removing tapping if a touchpad has at least one button (as is documented in the synaptics(4) manpage). I am the upstream maintainer of this bug. I can add this in the next upload to Debian (I'm releasing updates quite frequently now that I've adopted the package). Had two problems here that required my attention quite urgently: the debugging (or trying to, at least) to make rt2500usb go back to work with kernel 2.6.26, released this past Sunday by Linus (it's been a long thread on linux-kernel, that lasted way more than one month) and the preparation for the new release of the LAME MP3 encoder (for which I am upstream), after two years of continuous development. Now, I hope to be able to go to DebConf8. If I happen not to go, then I will embark into a journey of git bisection, as soon as possible. So, as you see, things are quite hectic here. Regards, Rogério Brito. P.S.: In the mean-time, I also found a solution/workaround for the bug that I reported on launchpad regarding X not working correctly with PowerPC. Given the lack of attention that I got from Ubuntu and the bug being only marked as of low importance, by the triager of the bug, I directed my energies towards Debian and discovered the solution. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-all I have an iBook G3, model 600MHz combo, Late 2001 and I got excited to see that Ubuntu Hardy has fixed the boot issues on this machine. Unfortunately, there are problems with X. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager Hi. In gnome-power-manager, we have an "Display Brightness" applet that is supposed to control the display brightness of LCDs of laptops. I used to use a pure Debian system with my Armada V300 and I decided to install Ubuntu 7.10 on it a few months ago. Unfortunately, the brigthness applet doesn't work with this notebook and I have been using the program attached as a way to control (via software) the brightness of the LCD. I'm on the same boat: I have an iBook G3 that is a fine computer and is running proprietary software right now, but I would love to have the flexibility of using Free Software, as an enthusiast. I think that, in this case, using Debian proper would be a good compromise. I would miss the Ubuntu-ness and all the convenience of an end-user distribution, but if Ubuntu doesn't work, what can exactly I do? Changing the initrd so that it can boot on all those machines that were "orphaned" by Apple in their latest Operating System is a priority that I thought that would be taken into consideration for the Gutsy release (here, the installed distribution didn't work since Feisty). Anyway, if there are proposals from the Ubuntu developers to have powerpc become a non-port again, I think that many people would contribute with the core team to have one very good distribution working with machines that were ignored otherwise. [Bug 126146] Re: gutsy doesn't boot completely on powerpc
Dear Digger, I have just successfully installed a preliminary version of Gutsy, but it was not without problems. First of all, the CD that I had here was from 2007-07 and it didn't work. With the CD from the version 2007-08-08, I was able to go on yaboot, type "livre break=top" and I was dropped into a shell command. There, as you said, I had similar problems with those that you did with ide: /proc/devices doesn't list the ide module loaded and /proc/ide doesn't exist. After manually loading ide-core, the CD starts to spin up and, when I exit the shell, the installation *now* goes as intended up to X being launched and having gnome loaded. Unfortunately it seems that gnome- settings-daemon insists to die (unless I freeze it with C-z) and the general installation went well, despite four things: 1 - I don't get any sound because, apparently, both OSS and ALSA modules get loaded. I could get the computer to produce sound (beeps on the command line) removing some modules (I forgot which, as I am not using that notebook right now). Despite this, the gnome volume adjuster couldn't be loaded when I got to the Desktop loaded. :-( It *seems* to be segfaulting (but I can inspect that more cautiously). 2 - I don't get hardware acceleration (saw that via glxinfo), but I did when I used Debian proper (at least when I downgraded the number of colors of the desktop to 16 bit per pixel). The card is a ATI Rage 128 Mobility M3 with 8MB, with AGP x2, and the notebook's LCD has a resolution of 1024x768. 3 - I couldn't get in any way my wireless adaptor to work (which is the only option that I have to use the Network when I am not at home). I tried loading the rt2x00usb, but it didn't work, unfortunately. I tried loading the ieee80211_*wep and siblings, but iwconfig only told me that none of the adaptors present (lo and eth2) didn't have wireless extensions (eth2 is the proper ethernet card). 4 - Upon finally installing Ubuntu and booting, I get dropped on the initramfs prompt again. :-( Well, that's the status right now, but I am slightly more hopeful since it at least installs (with quite some handholding, but it works). BTW, the kernel that is distributed is 2.6.22-6, if I am not mistaken. Dear Digger, I am sorry for the lack of replies. I was busy with some packages of mine entering Debian (and reporting the problems that I saw to Apple, as they have a pretty serious problem in their fsck, which leads to a nasty segmentation fault). Now, I am back to the task of trying the Ubuntu installation (since it seems that the next revision of MacOS X will drop support for my machine) and I desperately need an Operating System that is current and where I can use things to teach my students things with Free Software (and, to be sincere, the Fink Project for MacOS X isn't sufficient). But most important of all, I need a Free Operating System, having already run Debian on this iBook (but I would like to distribute copies of this to my friends that still have G3 perfectly functional machines). [Bug 123617] Re: Can't boot unless passing "irqpoll" option to the kernel
Hi, Ben. I tried going to the BIOS and restoring the "Safe Defaults". Unfortunately, it didn't fix anything. To make matters worse, I tried reducing the speed of the memory (the latency from 2 to 3) and I got the same problems as before: an system very hard to use (not so say unusable). I left the computer loading the CD from today for a whole half an hour. It even loaded X, the DPMS's standby of the monitor acted and the system was still accessing the disks. The funny thing is that I used to have this problem with the kernel from kernel.org, but now I can use it without any problems, and with all modules working. I have not tried using them all at the same time, but I think that I can. I would guess that the interrupt sent is generated by the Promise controller, as I'm not using Firewire, nor USB right now... Would you want me to git bisect any kernel to find which patch worked with, say, Dapper, but not with Gutsy? I can do that. Thanks, Rogério Brito. P.S.: I accidentally went to an xterm and this is what I discovered (it may help): [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ compiz --help Checking for Xgl: not present. [Bug 123263] Re: tribe-2 has severe problems due to screen effects enabled by default
Dear Travis, On Jul 15 2007, Travis Watkins wrote: > Can you make sure /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_outputs > is checked in gconf-editor? I'm not in front of my computer right now, but I can tell you that if I *boot* (not change, as you mentioned) in vesa ("safe graphics mode"), then I don't have problems. Also, if I go to a console and put a resolution bigger than 1280x1024, then, I think that due to the lack of VRAM, compiz is disabled and I get a normal desktop, without the effects. I would like to use the 3D effects, and I bought a Matrox G400 exactly because it is/was one of best supported cards on Linux, with specifications for the (at the time) XFree86 developers (so that I wasn't tied to Linux only). I don't know if my guess regarding the resolution is correct, but it surely seems to be the case. I will get to my computer as soon as I can and I will try to see if */detect_outputs is enabled or not. [Bug 126146] Re: gutsy doesn't boot completely on powerpc
Hi. Unfortunately, I didn't have the same luck as digger did, even if I boot on the yaboot prompt with live break=premount. I tried that and then, when booting, I was just dumped on the "(initramfs)" prompt and I did, as digger suggested, modprobe ide-core. Instantly I heard my CD drive spinning up and I was quite happy that it did so. I then exited the initramfs shell with the "exit" command and the system was accessing the (live) CD-ROM quite a bit (and I was happy with that). But the, much to my surprise, I got the following messages (taken on a paper, since I had a kernel panic): init: illegal runlevel: (null) Try `init --help' for more information (initramfs) exit Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I would appreciate any help with this. I would like to use Ubuntu and get rid of any non-Free Software on my iBook G3. BTW, if busybox provided any kind of dmesg, I could report what I could (I don't know how to get that if I can't put it on any other media). Anyway, would it be possible to have the ide-core module built into the kernel or would it break the installation process (but it is apparently broken for other people also, though). Well, *any* help is surely apreciated. [Bug 123617] Re: Can't boot unless passing "irqpoll" option to the kernel
Dear Jérôme, I'm this problem is really persistent. I'm updating every single day the live CD image (via rsync) and the problem persists with the kernel. Now, I finally succeed in getting a dmesg log of the problem. Please take a look at the timestamps. It takes a lot of time for the system to boot and I still have some problems. For instance, I could not plug in my USB chain to grab the logs to submit the bugreport with my vanilla kernel.org kernel. I would say that the severity of this bug is more than just "Medium", as it renders the system with unusable subsystems (the USB subsystem, the Firewire subsystem--those were the ones that I tried). BTW, I am seeing my HD light turned on all the time. :-( Please, help with this problem. Thanks in advance, Rogério Brito. ** Attachment added: "dmesg-with-problems.log" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8485379/dmesg-with-problems.log -- Can't boot unless passing "irqpoll" option to the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/123617 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 126146] gutsy doesn't boot completely on powerpc
Public bug reported: Unfortunately, I can't boot with the live CD for powerpc taken from cdimage.ubuntu.org for many days. I've noticed this since the tribe-1 days, but, if I recall correctly, the last distribution that booted completely was edgy (I don't think that feisty booted and I don't have a CD here handy). The symptoms of my problem is that after I boot into yaboot and choose "live", it shows the Ubuntu splash screen for a few seconds (say, 15 to 20 seconds) on my iBook G3 600MHz, with the orange bar going to the left and the right and then, suddenly, it stops and I get dropped into what I think is a busybox shell, with the message that no tty could be opened and that no job controls will work. Unfortunately, edgy doesn't work with my wireless external card and I need it: I have a DWL-G122 (USB) card and if I install it on edgy, the NetworkManager stays consuming 99 to 100% of CPU time, without any connection being established. Please, help. I've been rsyncing the CDs from cdimage.ubuntu.com every single day with the hope that it will work, but I am getting disappointed. Again, please, help. Thank you very much, Rogério Brito. P.S.: Don't hesitate to ask for further data if I can provide it, like a dmesg log or something similar. I don't know if I can extract it from the iBook, since it stops booting quite early in the process, but I will do whatever I can so that we can have Ubuntu working also on PowerPC. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gutsy doesn't boot completely on powerpc https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/126146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 123263] Re: tribe-2 has severe problems due to screen effects enabled by default
Hi there. What is missing for this bug to be considere as a "real" bug? Do I have to include further information? I think that I have provided with sufficient information, but I can provide whatever else is needed. I sincerely want to have Ubuntu working on my systems so that not only I can use this machine (actually, I'm thinking of teaching older people in my family to use it). [Bug 51080] Re: kernel fails to fully boot
I'm not with my iBook here (iBook G3 12", combo drive, 640MB of RAM (maxed out), late 2001 model), but I have the same problem that Gary mentioned: I could not boot with the installation CD of Feisty (I was just dropped on an early terminal and that was it). I tried running again the initial script and it showed the ubuntu logo with the progress bar going back and forth, but it stopped after, say, 5 seconds and I was back again dropped to a terminal. It is a sad thing that Ubuntu has put the powerpc machines "to rest in peace" when they are still quite usable. :-( I would love to have a new Feisty or anything else working from the install/desktop CD. :-( Regards, Rog'erio Brito. -- kernel fails to fully boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/51080 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 123617] Re: Can't boot unless passing "irqpoll" option to the kernel
It should be obvious from my logs, but I have 4 IDE controllers: 2 VIA- provided and 2 Promise PDC20265. My setup is as follows: * DVD+-RW as master (/dev/hda); * plain CD-ROM as master (/dev/hdc); * my main hard disk as master (/dev/hde). The problem happens when the hard disk is accessed: without passing irqpoll to the kernel, I can't actually boot (well, I *can* boot, but I receive a lot of messages regarding DMA being disabled). Anyway, the dmesg attached earlier shows that I have a "irq 10 nobody cared" problem. I used to have this with kernel.org kernels, but only when I used another hard drive (as /dev/hdg). Now, it's showing up here with ubuntu's kernel much earlier... :-( Anyway, please let me know if I can help this further. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-7-generic Unfortunately, I can't seem to boot several past live CDs (since feisty), since I receive *a lot of* problems with DMA on my motherboard (Asus A7V classic, with KT133 chipset).
