[Bug 983673] Re: me-tv-client doesn't interrupt screensaver

Calling org.gnome.SessionManager.Inhibit on org.gnome.SessionManager
does indeed appear to stop the locking screen appearing on GNOME3 with
GNOME Shell.

[Bug 983673] Re: me-tv-client doesn't interrupt screensaver

2014-05-05 Thread Russel Winder
I am working with a fork of the 1.3.7 codebase. The current code for
attempting to inhibit screen save/screen lock is some low level dbus C
code. I am looking to replace this with C++ Gio::DBus code given this is
supposed to be a C++ application :-)

I am using GNOME Shell so the current org.gnome.ScreenSaver code is
basically a no-op, even using the more general
org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver. I am experimenting with
org.gnome.SessionManager.Inhibit just now. I have no way of working on
Ubuntu or any other system so someone else will have to drive
experiments on those platforms.

[Bug 172571] Re: [needs-packaging] KRoC - Kent Retargetable occam Compiler

2013-11-02 Thread Russel Winder
There has been a lot of work on KRoC, it is just that they have moved to
a Continuous Delivery approach rather than a fixed release approach. So
to characterize the request as invalid since the last supposed release
was 2006 is unfair. The release is now whatever is HEAD in Subversion
and the Git mirror.

If this is not to be packaged then at least mark it a won't do rather
than Invalid: the request is not invalid, it just doesn't fit your
workflow which is release based.

[Bug 172571] Re: [needs-packaging] KRoC - Kent Retargetable occam Compiler

2013-11-02 Thread Russel Winder
Further research indicates:

http://frmb.org/kroc.html

Is managing the tarball generation from the Subversion/Git tags for
people who cannot use Subversion or Git to get the tagged releases.
Thus the last release in your terms is actually 2013-04-28 not
2006-01-14.

OK so the team should be more careful with their public websites, but it
remains true that the last KRoC release (in your terms) is 2013-04-28
which means this request to package is a valid one.

[Bug 999200] [NEW] Me-Tv does not inhibit screen saver on GNOME 3

2012-05-14 Thread Russel Winder
Public bug reported:

I am using a build of Me-TV from a branch of the mainline branch on
Debian Unstable. --version reports 1.4.0.9. I use GNOME3 Shell.

Television is playing fine now that I have managed to get a correct
channel file after the UK DSO and hence massive channel rearrangement.

However, the screen saver kicks in whilst playing television in full
screen. There doesn't seem to be an option to get me-tv-client to stop
this from happening.

I can confirm that lp:me-tv when compiled works fine as long as you
delete ~/.local/share/me-tv/me-tv.db first and recreate all the channel
information. I am having a small difficulty with the fact that the

formed XML document.

[Bug 657031] Re: [08ff:2810] AuthenTec, Inc. AES2810 fingerprint reader not recognized after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10

2010-11-02 Thread Russel Winder
Scott,

I don't think I was missing your point. Lenovo only sell T500 with
Windows so they only care about Windows drivers. AuthenTec will only do
something if it makes a profit and the only operating system that people
can get on their T500 machines in the shops is Windows, so only Windows
matters to them. Thus no-one with any financial clout is going to care,
except Canonical, who I thought had a policy of all hardware working
under Ubuntu out of the box. Clearly this is not the case for the T500.
So unless a big corporate suddenly decides it has to fund Canonical to
have the driver, Canonical will have to fund the project internally or
it will never happen. I am guessing from the apparent lack of official
Canonical corporate interest in this bug, the answer is this bit of
hardware will not now ever work in Ubuntu and definitely never in
Debian. Sad, but I have learnt to live with this.

I think the problem is that when Julien looked at this bug report, it
wasn't clear which kernel version is the one that provides the fix so
that the Debian folk can investigate whether they can issue that kernel
for Squeeze.

 ** Description changed:

   [Status]
   Fixed in maverick
Not fixed in lucid (bug still seen on 2010-09-22 with kernel 2.6.32-25)

Debian Squeeze is still running the 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel, Maverick is
running 2.6.35-22. Does anyone know which changeset to which kernel
series actually cures the problem? Do we even know whether this is a
2.6.32, 2.6.33, 2.6.34 or 2.6.35 issue?

   [Workaround]
As workaround add the option i915.powersave=0 to the kernel command line in
the grub config (for GRUB 2: edit /etc/default/grub and add i915.powersave=0
to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX, then run sudo update-grub; for GRUB 1: edit
/boot/grub/menu.lst and add i915.powersave=0 to the end of the line beginning
 with # kopt=, then run sudo update-grub).

   [Alternative workaround for experts]
 - Compile your kernel with Andy Whitcroft's patch from
 http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp538648-lucid/ (see comment #88).
+ Compile your kernel with Andy Whitcroft's patch from

I am not sure this is an option for the Debian folk, they need to run a
kernel from the official series.

[Bug 390001] Re: Gnome visual effects not retained after reboot

2010-11-02 Thread Russel Winder
I found that by booting using Debian Squeeze with the user home
directory in a partition shared by Debian and Ubuntu, doing the set up
in Debian and rebooting in Debian, the configuration was saved. Booting
to Ubuntu then used the save state. So the problem appears to be lack
of state saving in Ubuntu rather than jsut using defaults.

I use Unison to mirror my home directory between laptop and workstation
so that technique cured the problem ont he workstation without having to
load Debian at all.

The problem is therefore home directory state information with Debian
getting it right and Ubuntu not.

I have a Lenovo T500 and it would be nice if the fingerprint reader

could put up a duplicate that would then have all the data. In the mean
time, I am currently on Lucid fully up to date and have the package
fprint-demo installed.

From lsusb I see:

so the device is physically present. I have no idea if there are
supposed to be kernel modules loaded but from the lsmod and using grep I
couldn't see anything remotely connected to fprint, finger, print, auth,
etc., but then kernel modules do tend to have obscure labels.

If someone could set out the menu of data needed to progress this I can
certainly have a go collecting it.

Thanks.

[Bug 482535] Re: Bluetooth and wifi don't work after upgrade of Sony Vaio PCG SRX51P/B from Jaunty to Karmic

2010-08-12 Thread Russel Winder
I put a fresh install of Lucid on the machine and the wifi and bluetooth
failed to work. So clearly modern Linux kernels are not managing the
Sony add-in (Sony Programmable I/O Controller -- SPIC) of the past that
dealt with wifi and bluetooth. I guess the code has been removed as it
used to work.

Sadly the machine can only take a maximum of 384MB of main memory,
whilst operating systems these days seem to require 1GB or more to
operate. With Lucid the machine was more or less unusable due to
swapping -- especially apparent when using Unison, so I have had to
retire it. This is a great shame as its sound card is far superior to
anything that gets put into modern laptops, but that is a rant for a
different forum.

So the Ubuntu packaging policy is now diverging from Debian's: Debian

No one in the above must mean no one in the Ubuntu management team

[Bug 584825] [NEW] man2html needs partitioning

2010-05-24 Thread Russel Winder
Public bug reported:

Currently the man2html package depends on the Apache stack. The package
comprises a CGI component, which clearly requires the Apache stack, and
a man page to HTML page compiler which I believe is not dependent on the
Apache stack. Having the man page to HTML page compiler available
separately without the need to install the Apache stack would be a

[Bug 582420] Re: Please package boost-mpi and boost-mpi-dev

2010-05-23 Thread Russel Winder
For good or ill MPI is the defacto standard solution for handling
parallel computations in C, C++ and Fortran. For good or ill Boost is
the de facto standard library of extensions to C++. Doing any
parallleism using C++ will therefore involve Boost.MPI -- including
after the C++0x standard comes out and everyone can use futures and
asynchronous function call. Ubuntu has ejected the libboost-mpi-dev
package and all related Boost.MPI packages. There is therfore now no
way of installing Boost.MPI on Ubuntu via packages. Scott Kitterman
wrote in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/boost-
defaults/+bug/531973, point 15 that there is an objective rationale to
this. Debian however are not following this rationale, they retain the
Boost.MPI packages, so either have found a way of solving the issue
Scott outlines or have chosen not to be bound by that issue.

Unless Ubuntu provides some way of installing Boost.MPI from packages
then everyone who uses C++ and Boost.MPI will have to cease using Ubuntu
and switch to Debian, or one of the RPM-based distributions.

[Bug 531973] Re: [UNMETDEPS] libboost-mpi-dev has unmet dependencies in Lucid

2010-05-18 Thread Russel Winder
The fix proposed by Fabrice at #5 deletes the Boost MPI material from
the distribution, which has to be the wrong solution to the problem.
The correct solution is surely to add the missing packages and correct
the dependency in the specification?

Ubuntu 10.10 should include a full Boost 1.43 or 1.44 if that comes out
with good time for testing. I appreciate Debian only has 1.42 just now
but if Ubuntu only moved up to that it would be better than the current
1.40/1.41 situation.

[Bug 531973] Re: [UNMETDEPS] libboost-mpi-dev has unmet dependencies in Lucid

2010-05-18 Thread Russel Winder
Fabrice,

Hummm... I guess I am totally confused and talking from a weak position
of deep ignorance of the overall packaging.

I can happily see that the MPI stuff should not be in the default set of
Boost things drawn in: Boost MPI is a specialist thing and so should be
individually brought in on an as need basis. However what I thought I
saw and reported was that there is an inconsistency with the packages
libboost*mpi*, i.e. the packages that are specifically labelled as MPI
related, in Ubuntu.

From what I can see libboost-mpi-dev is in Debian Sid and points to
libboost-mpi1.42-dev.

It may be that this is just miscommunication and there is no conflict.
Lucid I guess is now history and cannot be changed. Looking forward to
Maverick, having libboost-mpi-dev must be considered essential referring
to libboost-mpi1.42-dev or (preferably) later.

[Bug 531973] Re: [UNMETDEPS] libboost-mpi-dev has unmet dependencies in Lucid

2010-05-18 Thread Russel Winder
Fabrice,

Ubuntu dropping MPI is a wrong decision (*) in today's increasingly
multicore and parallel world. Even though Actor Model, Communicating
Sequential Processes (CSP) and Dataflow are far superior models for
structuring parallel applications, and there are the new partitioned
global address space (PGAS) languages Chapel, X10 and Fortress, the
current de facto standard in the C, C++ and Fortran worlds is MPI and
OpenMP. OpenMP is supported as standard in GCC and Boost.MPI is the de
facto standard for C++ use of MPI. To drop MPI means that everyone
currently using Ubuntu and MPI will have to switch to Debian. If
switching from Ubuntu to Debian is what the Ubuntu decision makers want
Ubuntu users to do, then this is a good contributing decision.

(*) I orginally wrote Ubuntu dropping MPI is an insanely stupid move
but that seemed like a serious understatement!

cf. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/powerpc/libboost-mpi-dev/1.42.0.1
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/sparc/libboost-mpi-python-dev/1.42.0.1 or
am I misunderstanding the significance of these webpages?

[Bug 581574] [NEW] Suspend fails in some circumstances on T500 running Lucid

2010-05-17 Thread Russel Winder
Public bug reported:

If I suspend whilst on mains power and then restart again on mains power
then suspend works fine. Wether or not mains power has been removed in
between doesn't seem to matter.

If I suspend on mains power and then restart on battery, i.e. no mains
power, and then try to suspend, it fails. There is an attempt to
suspend -- the suspend light flashes as per normal duiring attempts to
suspend -- but it fails. The machine is left in screen off but fully on
mode. Hibernate fails to work at this point too. The only recourse is
to switch the machine off completely to save power drain.

I guess I should try all the other combinations of power state and
suspend/hibernate attempts to see which work and which do not, but I
thought I would get this report in in case it is a problem with a knonw
workaround.

Oh, I see, you can't have space around the =. This is irritating. At

OK the problem appears to be that Loggerhead now runs as user loggerhead
which is incomptible with user www-data that is used by Apache. This
make dealing with permissions irritating. I guess I will add loggerhead
to the www-data group.

[Bug 573634] [NEW] Buildbot debugclient fails to work on Lucid

2010-05-02 Thread Russel Winder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: buildbot

There is a bug in Buildbot 0.7.12 which is the version included in
Lucid. This has already been reported, and indeed fixed, upstream, cf.
http://buildbot.net/trac/ticket/719. This bug stops people using the
debugclient at all which is an essential tool for managing a Buildbot
site. Updating the package in Lucid based on the new upstream is
therefore something that needs to prioritized in order for Buildbot to
be usable on Lucid using the packages.

[Bug 538644] Re: Lucid doesn't mount Nokia N900

2010-04-27 Thread Russel Winder
I am using Lucid anyway and keeping up to date on a daily basis. I have
been using the N900 in modem mode to get mobile Internet quite
successfully. I had not had reason to use the device in mass media
mode. Apologies for not keeping up the flow of feedback.

I just did some experimentation and it is clear there is a which USB
socket effect. So with:

[Bug 390001] Re: Gnome visual effects not retained after reboot

2010-03-28 Thread Russel Winder
Isn't the problem actually in GConf?

Ever since switching from Metacity to Compiz in Jaunty, the state of the
Compiz systems has failed to be stored on logout. In particular, Gnome
thinks it is supposed to be using Metacity but Metacity fails to start
so no window manager. This means manually setting Compiz and waiting
for it to scan the device drivers. The Compiz state is also reset so I
have to manually switch of the Snapping Windows which I really dislike.
Fianlly the state of the workspace switcher has to be reset to what I
want as that fails to be remembered across logins.

The upgrade from Karmic to Lucid hasn't helped so I guess this is not a
distribution thing, just a configuration thing that doesn't get altered
across upgrades.
