[Bug 1285842] Re: Ending call in Twinkle causes system to crash

2014-10-31 Thread Ryan Daly
I see that the BIOS update was released after I opened the bug report...
I just grabbed it and updated.

The problem seems to have been corrected. I tested prior to the update
(while running A12) and after (A13) with the same kernel, so I can be
fairly confident that the fix was the BIOS update.

Thanks for the help!

[Bug 1286212] Re: [Dell Precision T3600] BUG: soft lockup - CPU stuck

2014-06-12 Thread Ryan Daly
I had been running kernel 3.14.0-031400rc6-generic for 56 days without
incident. Just this morning, my graphics locked up (nouveau experienced
a read fault and froze).

I'm not sure how to proceed with this bug... I hadn't experienced any
soft lockups with this kernel, but not sure if that's enough to claim
success. Thoughts?

[Bug 1292034] [NEW] Broken sorting of windows in Window Buttons

2014-03-13 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

In the "Window Buttons" component of the Xfce4-panel, there are options
for sorting windows. Currently, I have selected "Group title and window

grouping is activated.

I will attach a screenshot of what I am seeing.

[Bug 1286212] Re: [Dell Precision T3600] BUG: soft lockup - CPU stuck

2014-03-13 Thread Ryan Daly
Christopher,

I experienced another lock-up yesterday... I ended up putting some time
in and removed the propiretary nVidia drivers. That allowed me to
install the latest kernel.

I'm currently testing with 3.14.0-031400rc6-generic. Unfortunately it
may take days for the bug to surface, so I'll update accordingly.

Thanks.

2014-03-05 Thread Ryan Daly
Christopher, unfortunately the system this bug affects is needed for
work, so it needs to remain fully functional for my tasking.

Is there a lower rev kernel that I could test with?

2014-03-02 Thread Ryan Daly
Christopher,

I hope I'm doing this correctly, but unfortunately I'm getting an error
while installing the latest kernel. Since I'm running 12.04.4 LTS, is
there a limit to which kernel I can successfully install?

The output from the install is below.

Re: [Bug 1074964] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s

2013-10-18 Thread Ryan Daly
Hi Christopher,

Since experiencing the soft lockup, I have upgraded my kernel (am now
running 3.5.0-41-generic). I think the best thing would be to file a new
bug if I experience the same issue while running the updated kernel. If
you'd still rather see a new bug report filed, I can accommodate. Let me
know what you think.

Thanks.

[Bug 962376] Re: spicevmc not supported in QEMU binary

2013-06-18 Thread Ryan Daly
I can confirm that I got the Spice display working as well. I did both of
1) Edit the XML file as in comment #15.
2) Remove and re-add the guest.

My only issue is that (so far) I can only see the guest's display when
using the cirrus video model. Qxl only shows me a blank screen. As
mentioned, cirrus works, but I can only get to a 1024x768 resolution
(which is a bit small for my liking).

Are there any other methods for getting a better resolution working
under Spice?

[Bug 1057024] Re: kvm kernel module always loaded, without setting /dev/kvm permissions

2013-06-17 Thread Ryan Daly
After a reboot, I see the following:

getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/kvm

# group: kvm
user::rw-
user:daly:rw-

If I understood the thread correctly, these permissions should have been
set without requiring a reboot. If that's true, then something still
isn't right with the installer.

[Bug 973778] Re: Unable to connect to Xfce Power Manager

I cannot remove gnome-power-manager without it wanting to remove the

Is the workaround to simply uninstall/reinstall lightdm?

[Bug 1035703] Re: Relocating library loses ability to set event photos

2012-08-11 Thread Ryan Daly
I was doing some reading and found an unrelated issue, but it described
a workaround to have the thumbnails regenerated. One needed to select
all of the photos and flip them, then revert to the original. That
didn't work, but selecting all of the photos and enhancing them, then
reverting back to the original *does* work.

An interesting thing to note is that I can select a photo to be the key
for an event, but that photo will not show up until after the workaround
described above is performed.

I performed the following:
1) Obtained a dump of photo.db.
2) Started Shotwell and assigned a new key photo for an event.
3) Shut down Shotwell and obtained another dump.
4) Restarted Shotwell and performed the workaround described above.
4) Shut down Shotwell and obtained another dump.

The only difference between the 3 dumps is the "primary_source_id" field
in the EventTable. In the dump obtained in #1, the field's value is
"thumb0c8d". In the other 2 dumps, the field's value is
"thumb0c8e".

[Bug 1035703] [NEW] Relocating library loses ability to set event photos

2012-08-11 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

I recently relocated my Shotwell library... Afterward I noticed that it
"lost" a few photos. I managed to get them back, but then noticed that
various events lost their key photos. I have not been able to get these
back... Not sure what to do, and reimporting these photos doesn't seem
to be an option as that may lost tags and other modifications.

I'm running 12.04 (32bit) w/ kernel 3.2.0-24-generic-pae on a Dell E6510
with NVIDIA Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2) and I'm hitting this
bug. I've blacklisted the intel_ips module (as per comment #15) and the
laptop is now booting properly. Before putting this in it seemed to be
a crap-shoot as to when the system would come up...

[Bug 1004690] [NEW] cannot override "hw-detect/load_firmware"

2012-05-25 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

Upon setting the following in a preseed file:
d-i hw-detect/load_firmware boolean true

I still get prompted to answer this during an installation of 12.04. In the
log, I see the following:
May 25 19:55:33 check-missing-firmware: missing firmware files
(brcm/bcm43xx-0.fw) for brcmsmac
May 25 19:55:35 debconf: --> SUBST hw-detect/load_firmware FILES

I expect to not get asked this question during the installation since it
is preseeded.

[Bug 857610] Re: needs more apparmor rights

2011-11-17 Thread Ryan Daly
The following also seems to be related to this bug...

I am experiencing an issue on one of two systems that I log into. I'm
not sure if the differences between the two systems are causing this, or
if something else is going on.

My problem started by initially configuring Empathy for a sipe account.
All was fine until I had to log out and back in again. This is when I
noticed that my account information was missing. After poking around a
bit, I discovered these in /var/log/syslog:

Nov 17 15:24:38 linux13 kernel: [26233.295858] type=1400
audit(1321561478.257:1276): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" parent=11498
profile="/usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5"
name="/nas/users02/daly/.mission-control/accounts/accounts.cfg" pid=11499
comm="mission-control" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=1245 ouid=1245
Nov 17 15:24:38 linux13 kernel: [26233.301999] type=1400
audit(1321561478.265:1277): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" parent=1
profile="/usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5"
name="/nas/users02/daly/.cache/.mc_connections" pid=11499
comm="mission-control" requested_mask="r" denied_mask="r" fsuid=1245 ouid=1245
[..]

The first DENIED message indicates that apparmor is preventing Empathy
from reading the file it keeps the account details in.

I modified the program "telepathy" such that it's in "complain" mode. I
was then able to log out and back in again, having Empathy successfully
re-read my existing account information.

I can provide further details if needed. Thanks.

[Bug 885285] [NEW] empathy segfaults when trying to open 2nd conversation window from notification area

2011-11-02 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 11.10 (with gnome-shell). Upon opening a conversation (by

successfully. Subsequent attempts fail and the following error is left

[Bug 881177] [NEW] netboot in 11.10 searches for wrong "dists" directory

2011-10-24 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

I commonly install Ubuntu using a PXE server. I was disappointed to see
that the DVD structure has been altered with 11.10, and even further
disappointed when I found that the netboot package obtained from
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/
is looking in the wrong location for packages. In my web server log, I
see the following error:

[Mon Oct 24 20:08:05 2011] [error] [client 10.10.10.10] File does not
exist: /apache/vhosts/ks/docs/ubuntu/desktop/11.10/dist/32bit/dists
/oneiric-updates

The installer errors out with a message starting with "No kernel modules
were found." Looking at the DVD (or CD) image that I'm using, I find no
directory under dists by that name. I only see:

: server9 80#; ls dists
./ ../ oneiric/ stable@ unstable@

Am I missing an option somewhere, or was the netboot image incorrectly
built?

[Bug 878412] Re: initscripts.postinst always removes /etc/motd.tail

Before posting this bug, I did find that bug #659738 is dealing with
duplicate motd's caused by a mis-handling of /etc/motd.tail. It's
possible that these bugs are related, but that's not up to me to make
that call.

[Bug 878412] [NEW] initscripts.postinst always removes /etc/motd.tail

2011-10-19 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

I noticed this behavior when upgrading from 10.04.1 -> 10.04.3. The
following code (inside initscripts.postinst) will always remove
/etc/motd.tail if there is any character (even a single space) in the
file. If the file is empty, it appears to be left alone.

help_text=$(/etc/update-motd.d/10-help-text 2>/dev/null || true)
if [ -n "$help_text" ] && fgrep -q "$help_text" /etc/motd.tail
then
rm -f /etc/motd.tail
# Rebuild the motd now that motd.tail has been fixed.
[..]
fi

The 'fgrep -q "$help_text" /etc/motd.tail' *always* matches if the file
is non-null. This is bad in that it wipes out custom modifications to
the motd.

[Bug 12893] Re: Shouldn't put .Trash-$USER on removable devices

2010-08-07 Thread Ryan Daly
It is definitely not a fresh user. The user ID that I've been using has
been around for a while. (Are you thinking maybe some legacy
configuration settings are causing this?)

Also, the install of 10.04 was performed via do-release-upgrade. Prior
to that, I believe 9.04 was the version that I installed from scratch.

[Bug 575255] Re: unable to access tty using ctrl-alt-F1 lucid

2010-05-23 Thread Ryan Daly
I'm seeing this issue, but not everywhere.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 with a nVidia GeForce FX Go5650 that works properly.
I have a Dell Precision M65 with a nVidia Quadro FX 350M that does not work.
All I get is a flashing cursor.

Does this have anything to do with the graphics a particular system is
or isn't running?

[Bug 488696] Re: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]

2010-05-07 Thread Ryan Daly
Even after adding the line to /etc/nsswitch.conf, you still need to
ensure that /etc/auto.master has...

+auto.master

...before it will look to NIS. Is this intended behavior? Seems to be
redundant if /etc/nsswitch.conf is already specifying that it needs to
look to NIS for the auto.master map.

2010-03-09 Thread Ryan Daly
I must agree... It seems to take too long for simple bugs like this to
be fixed.

IF Ubuntu is to challenge Windows/MAC/, more speedy fixes will
need to occur. The average user cannot be expected to go in search of
fixes that should already be released.

If there are other issues with releasing the fix, make them known.

eventually change to white. I cannot change to a vt, either. My

troubleshoot.

[Bug 513442] [NEW] visudo incorrectly reports Cmnd_Aliases are not in use

2010-01-27 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sudo

Running visudo presents warnings that all Cmnd_Alias's are unused.

: linux13 27#; visudo
visudo: /etc/sudoers.tmp unchanged
visudo: Warning: unused Cmnd_Alias COMPILE
visudo: Warning: unused Cmnd_Alias GFX

visudo: Warning: unused Cmnd_Alias SERVICE_CONTROL
visudo: Warning: unused Cmnd_Alias SMART_CARD
visudo: Warning: unused Cmnd_Alias TEMP
visudo: Warning: unused Cmnd_Alias VPN

These Cmnd_Alias's are all part of another Cmnd_Alias, and in fact are
in use. If using "-s", these warnings will not let you write the
sudoers file out. It seems that visudo is not checking for nested
Cmnd_Alias's.

[Bug 491578] [NEW] Upgrading GDM wipes customized configuration

2009-12-02 Thread Ryan Daly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Upgrading GDM removes customized GDM configuration.

This configuration is now held in ~gdm/.gconf. After upgrading the gdm
package, the ~gdm/.gconf directory is empty. Since the new gdm utilizes
this area for configuration, upgrading the package removes
customizations.

Release details:
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10
Codename: karmic

Package details:
gdm 2.28.1-0ubuntu2

[Bug 362639] Re: Unable to mount or read CD drive

2009-10-15 Thread Ryan Daly
I'm experiencing similar issues. My system has two CD drives. When I
insert a disc in /dev/cdrom1 (/dev/cdrom1 -> sr1 -> scd1), Nautilus
mounts the disc. When I take that same disc and put it in /dev/cdrom
(/dev/cdrom -> sr0 -> scd0), Nautilus will not mount it.  I have
confirmed that I can manually mount a CD inserted into /dev/cdrom.

daly <34#> mount -v /media/cdrom0
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
/dev/sr0 on /media/cdrom0 type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,utf8,user=daly)

Also noticed after I issue the above command, I see it in the Computer -
File Browser, but it has its own icon (cdrom0). Not sure where to look
from here...

I have also experienced similar behavior. I was operating normally for
a number of days with pidgin running. Today I went to modify documents
