[Bug 129314] Re: Cannot open tgz archive from FreeBSD

2011-05-20 Thread S. M. Das
Confirmed, this bug exists in Maverick.

In my particular case, it is GNU tar which produces the above stated
output, and it is the file-roller GUI which works properly.

My archive file, however, contains un-distributable sources from a
colleague, and I cannot post it here.

[Bug 504771] Re: [empathy] the font and the font size cannot be changed

2011-01-31 Thread S. M. Das
Our company uses jabber for group communication; nearly all of us are
programmers.

In pasting snippets of code back and forth in chat messages, it is
roundly agreed that the lack of a font picker, for choosing a monospace
font, is highly annoying and detrimental to our communication. We
frequently end up resorting to sending it via e-mail, and then chatting
about the e-mail itself in real time...

[Bug 300271] Re: Setting the network proxy doesn't change the synaptic proxy settings (gnome-network-preferences) for authenticated proxies

2009-07-27 Thread S. M. Das
My path to this bug:

1) System-Preferences-Network Proxy
2) Manual Proxy Configuration
3) Set up authenticated proxy for all protocols
4) Ignore some hosts
5) Apply System-Wide...

Contents of /etc/environment then only contain
http_proxy=http://10.10.40.10:80;.

Should be something like:

http_proxy=http://u...@password:10.10.40.10:80/;
no_proxy=localhost,127.0.0.0/8,*.local

Lame bug!! Please do fix for us :-)

(NOTE... don't mind disclosing that proxy IP, it's a non-routable
address anyway, at work to boot! So, please no comments about that)

[Bug 290313] Re: system-wide proxy does not apply to synaptic

2009-07-27 Thread S. M. Das
Found some dupes of this... most important thing to know about this bug
is that it's not just synaptic, it's every network application that
depends on the environment variables $http_proxy, $ftp_proxy, $no_proxy,
etc.

The bug title is a bit misleading and should be changed to:

system-wide proxy should not require relogin to take affect

... or something similar if anyone can think of shorter, more eloquent
wording.

[Bug 300271] Re: Setting the network proxy doesn't change the synaptic proxy settings (gnome-network-preferences) for authenticated proxies

2009-07-27 Thread S. M. Das
Wow... peeking at dupes, it seems that authentication and non-proxy host
lists have been broken for years!!

Authenticated proxy is a very common requirement at large companies (I
work for a multi-national audio equipment manufacturer with ~10,000
employees, or so, worldwide for example), especially for filtering
content. I won't say the name of the filtering software/server solution
because I don't want to give them any free advertising or kudos :-)

Anyway... this is going to manifest itself in lots of ways outside of
synaptic, and probably result in a LOT of weird duplicates on other
applications. Worse, many apps (grip, picard, firefox, pidgin, etc...)
have their OWN proxy settings, so what happens is that the user ends up
configuring twenty different apps with their proxy authentication
information (which, by the way, is usually your corporate desktop user
password!! so, yeah, fairly significant security worry there, too)
instead of the global proxy environment variable. Not that an
environment variable with a password in plain-text is better security,
but at least it's only in one place...

I'll stop rambling now. My point is that this bug may be somewhat
bigger than it looks, and frustrate people in unexpected ways, be aware.

Definitely a kernel regression, at least for the PPC port. Rather
severe, too, it seems.

[Bug 112297] Re: Brightside forgets the edge flipping configuration

2009-07-15 Thread S. M. Das
Still reproducible in 9.04 final.

Suppose I should note that I'm on the community-supported PowerPC port,
but this is a packaging problem (the deb install metadata fails to
properly place an autostart entry).

This bug is named incorrectly, I think... it's not just edge-flipping,
but all brightside features which are unavailable at login unless you go
turn them on again, *every time* you've logged in. No corners, nothing.
