[Bug 730622] Re: no way to specify all architectures

2017-05-21 Thread Sam Brightman
I can't remember the context from 6 years ago. I believe there was
nothing unsupported about it; trying to build a package for a non-host
architecture. debhelper not actually building all when told to made this
harder, and especially harder to automate.

[Bug 297792] Re: [Regression] Olympus LS10 internal disk in 8.10 don't automount

2015-01-11 Thread Sam Brightman
@thomas-launchpad-2 I see the same problem again with an Olympus LS10 on
14.10. As you describe - removing the SD card allows the system to mount
the internal drive. With the card in only the card is mountable from the
UI. Disk utility lists both and both can be manually mounted on the
command line.

[Bug 1371853] Re: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-11-15 Thread Sam Brightman
There were a couple of kernel updates after the previous comment on
14.04 and then I didn't see the issue for several weeks, including
initially after 14.10 upgade. Today I can frequently only get one left
click before it stops working.

This is the first reboot since installing 3.16.0-25.33 and did not see
the behaviour on 3.16.0-24.32 before that. I don't see any xorg/unity
changes in the same time. I tried to find suspicious differences:

Darren reports experiencing the *same* issue and correlates a possible
cause which matches the setup of the original reporting. I think it's
rather premature to dismiss that as a separate bug. Bugs are anyway not
scoped to individual people). I will report back if the problem occurs
again with the additional hardware unplugged.

[Bug 1371853] Re: Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-09-23 Thread Sam Brightman
Hi Christopher. The BIOS I have is already an F8 version variant and I
would like to keep the variant. Further, I have not had this problem in
the 6 years of owning the hardware until 14.04. So further to Darren's
comment it seems very likely that this is a recent software issue. I
noticed the problem as soon as I upgraded to 14.04, definitely before
19th September, but I did not upgrade on launch date.

I should add that although the problem commonly happens every 10 minute
or so, there is sometimes a period of hours without problems and
sometimes it happens on every click.

I also have an Xbox 360 wireless connector. I will try removing it to
see if that is causing some sort of conflict.

closely related symptoms. Try switching to console and back (Ctrl-

[Bug 1371853] [NEW] Logitech wireless mouse periodically loses correct click behaviour

2014-09-19 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

This problem began with the 14.04 upgrade. The mouse has always worked
normally until then.

Approximately every 10 minutes - and possibly triggered by Alt-Tab
window switches/opening new windows - the mouse behaviour becomes rather
strange. Primarly, left-clicks are not registered properly to the
topmost window. They usually appear to go through to the window below
and it's not possible to switch focus to a new window (or any other
window). Mouse movement is unaffected and clicking on the original
window (which has grabbed the focus) seems to work. The Unity bar pops
out but is not clickable and rapidly re-hides. Sometimes individual
window elements are not usable even if the main window itself is.
Examples:

* In Thunderbird, left-pane account/folder selection works, but does not
perform the corresponding update to the message list/preview panes when the
folder selection changes.
* dialogues are popped up where parts of the dialogue respond to clicks but
other parts do not. Commonly, the dialogue title/menu bar is not responsive (it
cannot be moved/closed).

Sometimes right-clicking will restore focus to the appropriate
window/area. Sometimes not.

Unloading and reloading usbhid and hid_logitech modules does not help.

Restarting will fix the problem temporarily. I've found that switching
to a console and back will fix the problem temporarily too (Ctrl-Alt-F1,
Ctrl-Alt-F7).

Several very similar bugs exist for wireless headsets, mice and quite
often Logitech (although of course this is just a common brand) from
before 14.04, but for me this was never a problem previously. They are
being closed as expired even though they still exist in 14.04. Bug
#993655, Bug #1006156 and Bug #1337586 are examples. It is not 100%
clear to me if this is an xorg bug, but this is what was being suggested
in those tickets. The combination of module reloading not working with
console switching working (reinstall handlers?) does suggest X is
involved.

[Bug 940843] Re: Drag to top fails to maximise window, leaves translucent effect displaying

2012-03-01 Thread Sam Brightman
It is certainly possible to reproduce a not maximising behaviour by
playing around with the trigger point, but the effect also doesn't show
(i.e. can drag to top with nothing happening). It is also possible to
trigger a maximise without the effect showing up.

Both initially seemed to be quite easy to do with a terminal window, but
the former is not reproducing anymore. I'm not sure if this is
intentional behaviour. I haven't been able to trigger the translucent
effect triggering without maximising, but perhaps the behaviours are
related.

No maximise (not 100%):

* move slowly over border
* flick back and forth

Maximise without effect:

* send terminal to the left-half position (half-screen effect shows)
* now pull it to the top (maximises without effect)

Yes, all updates applied and happened more than once after restart. Not
sure on exact way to reproduce though.

[Bug 940843] [NEW] Drag to top fails to maximise window, leaves translucent effect displaying

2012-02-25 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

I start a terminal with my session, and it doesn't remember its
position. So I try to drag the frame to the top of the desktop to
maximise it, and sometimes get the situation shown in the screenshot.
The translucent effect stays in place and the window does not maximise,
although the application and desktop remain usable. Grabbing the
terminal's title again will allow the situation to be reset back to
normal (effect goes) but will not maximise by dragging until released
and dragged a third time.

[Bug 940846] [NEW] ata lost interrupts, blocked waiting for disk

2012-02-25 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

At some point on 29th July my Ubuntu 10.04 machine became unresponsive.
I recognise this was a while ago, but wanted to register it at least in
case other people had the same issue or it came up again. I did capture
the full syslogs from the time, but unforunately the bug reporting tool
will have atached my 11.10 details.

When I tried to use the machine at least networking and crond were still
running, but display was not outputting anything and I couldn't log in
using VNC or SSH. Machine was pingable and showed open ports. After
rebooting, I saw these errors in the logs:

sam@wildthing:/var/log$ zgrep lost interrupt syslog*
syslog.1:Jul 29 08:12:13 wildthing kernel: [176483.080064] ata7: lost interrupt

They are followed by related messages, then finally some tasks look like
they are blocking writing to disk:

Problem, workaround, and side-effects of workaround remain absolutely
identical in 11.10. I feel there is no evidence of this being a
different bug, and no value in scattering the information around -
marking Confirmed.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid = Confirmed

** Summary changed:

[Bug 938981] Re: Xorg freeze when starting Firefox

2012-02-22 Thread Sam Brightman
This actually also happens when opening links from other programs (e.g.
click link in Thunderbird). It doesn't seem to happen within Firefox
itself, so possibly to do with the tray animation or redrawing
fullscreen?

I answered that it happens a couple of times per week, but realistically
this happens several times per day - I avoid it by keeping Firefox open
for days at a time.

I have tried the updated fglrx driver. It appears to fail to install
(known bug #873058) but I still end up with:

ii fglrx-updates 2:8.911-0ubuntu0.1

However, CCC reports 11.8 and the crashes still occur.

Crashes perhaps sometimes manifest as Xorg restarts (as if Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace was pressed) - I get both hard lockups (more common) and X
restarts under similar circumstances.

[Bug 759433] Re: Mirroring desktops with different resolutions problematic

2012-02-21 Thread Sam Brightman
Mirroring to different resolutions is still problematic in 11.10. In
fact, I now have even more problems than before. There is a Note: may
limit resolution options under the mirroring option, but this hardly
solves things. Now there are additional issues such as sometimes
outputting wrong resolutions to one output (A/V receiver - TV says mode
unsupported) or nothing at all to one monitor. Sometimes there is an
error upon switching the display output on again about the dimensions
being outside of bounds, the Displays config panel lists one of the
monitors as off, even though there is output there.

However, to keep it simple: no, it is not possible to output to my TV's
VGA port and the A/V receiver (HDMI) in both their native resolutions.

I don't know how it is even possible not to be aware of this by now. I
will buy a diNovo Edge for an Ubuntu developer if they stop this
happening 2/3 upgrades. It has been going on for years, and it doesn't
seem to be at all complicated.

[Bug 723878] Re: When windows open for the first time they should not hide the launcher

2011-08-26 Thread Sam Brightman
I have been trying to use --geometry to e.g. get a gnome-terminal to
open flush-left as it behaves when snapped to the left by dragging. Even
if the launcher is not open, it will always leave space there. Likewise,
playing with place windows plugin fixed settings doesn't seem to achieve
this. From a design point of view, it seems inconsistent that the snap
action ignores the launcher whilst other placement actions pretend it is
showing even when it is not. An example problem resulting from this is
that you cannot startup an applicatiojn snapped left.

[Bug 727903] Re: Dropping a file into a window via the 'drag file to Launcher, then drag file to Spread' interaction fails to load the file into the selected window

2011-08-24 Thread Sam Brightman
From my point of view I only tried to drop because nothing was
happening. If I understand correctly, hover is supposed to result in
zooming to that window, after which you could drop. If that's correct
then fixing it would be satisfactory v useful.

[Bug 727903] Re: Dropping a file into a window via the 'drag file to Launcher, then drag file to Spread' interaction fails to load the file into the selected window

2011-08-21 Thread Sam Brightman
This also occurs with tabs in Firefox (6). If you accidentally detach a
tab into a new window, there is no obvious way to put it back again.
Instinct is to drag to bar, at which point they spread out and you drop
on the old window. This cancels the drag action, however. I didn't get
it to zoom to that window at any point.

[Bug 827449] [NEW] pulseaudio doesn't handle switching users

2011-08-16 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

When switching users, sound does not work for the new user. Messages are
seen in the system log like this:

Aug 20 17:29:31 localhost pulseaudio[19234]: pid.c: Daemon already
running.
Aug 20 17:29:31 localhost pulseaudio[18979]: x11wrap.c: XOpenDisplay()
failed
Aug 20 17:29:31 localhost pulseaudio[18979]: module.c: Failed to load
module module-x11-publish (argument: display=:0.0): initialization failed.

It seems likely related to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=593746. I don't think all the information
presented there is currently relevant - or the workaround effective - as
the start-pulseaudio-x11 script isn't used to start pulseaudio and it
does use autospawn on Ubuntu. My current workaround is to start a new
pulseaudio for the second user (without killing the old one).

[Bug 759433] [NEW] Mirroring desktops with different resolutions problematic

2011-04-12 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I'm 95% sure that I was doing this every day pre-Lucid with no manual
configuration. On Maverick now. I have an LCD with both VGA and HDMI
inputs. The HDMI works better on a different resolution, and goes
through an A/V receiver. All the resolutions seem to be correctly
detected in log files and (usually) the GUI. Perhaps they are now
detected too well, and it is forced that they must match, whereas before
supposedly unsupported resolution were allowed and the screen or TV was
scaling them.

I have tried this with as many settings as I could think of using
Catalyst Control Center with fglrx. I have also tried the monitor
preferences GUI with fglrx.

I am currently running with the radeon driver, which has the same
problem. Additionally, on boot it uses 640x480 only. The monitor
preferences only allows this resolution. I used xrandr to set
--preferred for both and - with the exception of some tiling of the
wallpaper and weird maxisation issues - it seems to work at the correct
resolutions now. They are also offered correctly in the monitor
preferences GUI. If I re-enable mirroring in the GUI, the available
resolutions shrink again to only 640x480: presumably this was the
problem at boot - only one common resolution for radeon driver?
Additionally the default monitor preferences view of the
devices/monitors only shows one. When you click on it, the second output
is drawn as another square with the manufacturer name in (clearly, it
was detected properly).

I sit quite far from my screen, so having the right resolution
regardless of input used is important for legibility.

[Bug 677372] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2

2011-04-12 Thread Sam Brightman
What was the result? What did you do before and how did you fix it?

I had a similar problem when upgrading from Karmic, leading to no
graphics on restart (fglrx line was not removed from Xorg.conf). I also
had remnants/packages in the dpkg DB, manual use of aptitude to tidy it
all up. I saw another message when removing it recently -
installArchives() failed.

[Bug 657588] Re: FGLRX loading leads to blank screen and no graphics output.

2011-04-11 Thread Sam Brightman
I had the same problem that I had on upgrade - removing the driver
doesn't remove the fglrx line from xorg.conf, resulting in a hung
bootup. Removing the line shows a much nicer boot screen but then only
supports 640x480 after GNOME starts. Re-installing fglrx from the
Additional Drivers GUI hasn't reproduced the problem for me.

[Bug 657588] Re: FGLRX loading leads to blank screen and no graphics output.

2011-04-10 Thread Sam Brightman
I had all kinds of problems uninstalling - the additional drivers GUI
failed with installArchives() failed and continued to show the green
light. aptitude also got very confused and couldn't uninstall it, losing
the autoinstalled packages in the process. This page is very useful, and
has the solution for the dpkg-divert problem:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Maverick_Installation_Guide

I've tried to clean out the other auto-installed packages in order to
reboot and try to reproduce the installation problem.

[Bug 689399] Re: evolution icons for delete/cancel are non-intuitive

2011-04-09 Thread Sam Brightman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 693903 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/693903

I'm not sure how such issues are treated for LTS releases, but I believe
this is still a problem in Lucid so possibly not a dupe. Do usability
issues get LTS updates? I have since upgraded, but the icons were both
red, I think. The cancel one has not changed, I believe the delete one
had an exclamation mark.

The distinction between the two is greater in Maverick, but still not
great - bug 693903 can deal with that.

[Bug 693903] Re: ambiguous icons in toolbar CANCEL vs DELETE

2011-04-09 Thread Sam Brightman
I think the little red X icons in the corners of every window (whence
the window is deleted) are a pretty big clue that this shouldn't be
used. In Firefox, there is no delete concept for a web page, so they
are able to use it without concern for alternative meanings.

Whilst the trash bin is an improvement for experienced users (at least
you can figure it out), its lack of prominence is still an issue. Also,
now the trash bin and the trash itself are both used, and right next to
each other. Confusing for newer users. Delete is probably used in the
order of hundreds of times more than cancel, so should easily get
priority if there is competition for a visual cue. In fact, I have
probably never used cancel in my life in a mail client. I would have to
think about it to figure out why it's even there at all.

[Bug 730236] Re: alien does not warn when it fails due to incompatible arch

2011-04-08 Thread Sam Brightman
As I commented on that bug, re: underlying cause:

I believe this issue was triggered by a change in the meaning of the
flags, so that -a no longer means all. I looked at it briefly and
considered this a silly regression; the previous options covered all
use-cases including that of the person requesting the change. Maybe I
misunderstood. The bug closed was 572077, in version 7.4.16. There have
been several changes to architecture handling since then though. My
understanding was that the default of building all architectures could
fail if there was an unbuildable architecture (naturally). There was a
flag to smart-select only those that were compatible that solved this
problem. The result was removing the possibility to build all - such as
building an i386 package on 64-bit.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

papukaija, did you read my comment in the Redhat bug? It should have
been re-titled and was only closed due to distro EOL (despite still
existing in the following releases... *sigh*). That bug states that it
is a problem with the way gnome-screensaver grabs the keyboard in
general, and that clients should not need modification. Probably both
bugs should be more general: it is not exclusive to menus being open or
VNC.

This bug has been confirmed on released Maverick and should be marked

Since this bug only occurs when upgrading/switching on the driver, I
will try to repro by disabling and reenabling. My graphics setup is
still partially broken since the upgrade (admittedly, may be multiple
issues).

[Bug 748907] [NEW] Seaming between window and its title bar with advanced desktop effects

2011-04-03 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When maximising or restoring a window, the bounciness shows some slight
seaming under the title bar. This also sometimes happens when switching
workspaces to one with a maximised window. Firefox is a particularly
good example which seems to show consistent seaming, but I've also seen
with other applications (text editor, computer janitor, evolution). It
is much more obvious when maximising than restoring, and of course with
a light desktop behind. I can't remember when I last used desktop
effects, so not sure how new this is.

[Bug 748922] [NEW] No GUI for configuring extra mouse buttons/shortcuts

2011-04-03 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

At the moment there is no way for an average user to easily configure
any extra buttons their mouse may have or to set shortcuts for buttons.
A simple UI for the buttons could be present in gnome-mouse-properties,
but also a unified interface for input configuration could be used -
i.e. gnome-keybinding-properties could accept mouse buttons. Mice with
plenty of buttons are now very common, and asking users to install
universe packages and hand-edit config files is not really acceptable

[Bug 746973] [NEW] Facebook certificate is untrusted

Binary package hint: gwibber

I heard reports like this from other project (e.g. iPhone SDK), so
assume it is not a genuine issue with the login process. I am using
10.10, totally up-to-date (Gwibber 2.32.2). I see a dialogue like this
when enabling the FB account:

This connection is untrusted. Would you like to continue anyway?

The identity provided by the chat server cannot be verified.
The certificate is self-signed.

Sometimes this pops up twice (I don't tick remember this choice.
As a side point, the dialogue vanishes if you move away from it (making
it hard to copy paste the content here). Gwibber is still waiting for
my response but I can't Alt-Tab back to it. The certificate has SHA-1
fingerprint:

22 E5 0E EE AF 2D AF 8E 44 03 77 19 6C 4D 95 73 4D EE 94 D9

It is within the valid date range, and does not actually appear to be
self-signed: DigiCert is the issuer. There is no OU for the certificate.

[Bug 426353] Re: wake on usb

2011-03-09 Thread Sam Brightman
I really don't understand why this bug is being treated as
Incomplete/Expired. More information was supplied on request, and it has
been confirmed to be an issue in the most recent release. Further, this
is an issue of chosen defaults lack of UI. As far as I'm aware it will
affect all users, so not hard to track down or requiring
apport/debugging info.

If it's worth anything, I can also confirm that this is an issue on
10.04 (Vaio laptop) and 10.10 (desktop). By default, USB devices do not
wake from suspend/sleep. There is also no UI to adjust this. Please let
us know exactly what information is missing.

[Bug 730236] Re: alien 8.81 claims to build .deb but doesn't

In my case this was due to architecture incompatibility. debhelper
changed in a way that prevents dh_listpackages from returning the
incompatible architecture. It used to do so, so alien could build the
package and you could then use ia32-libs etc. It should also not report
success when doing nothing.

was changed to depend on the build architecture. This seems illogical
and not backwards compatible. However, alien should still report the
failure properly.

[Bug 730622] [NEW] no way to specify all architectures

2011-03-07 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debhelper

It used to be that by default all packages are selected. However,
getpackages('both') is called from init(), which does not select
packages for architectures other than the build architecture. The old
behaviour of calling getpackages() should be used (no parameter, to get
all of them). This is line 79 in Dh_Lib.pm. There was a recent change
claiming that the new behaviour was more desirable to reduce the size of
debian/rules. However, it seems that the -s option already covers the
situation of smartly detecting compatibility.

Furthermore, I would also debate whether the new design of -a not
allowing architectures that don't match the current one is correct.
Wanting architecture-dependent packages says nothing about whether you
want them to match. Again, there is already a -s option. Now there is a
different default too. Making a third change to -a behaviour means there
is no way to specify building all architectures.

Perhaps it should also be an error rather than warning to ask for
packages that do not exist, or if there are no packages found?

[Bug 730236] [NEW] alien 8.81 claims to build .deb but doesn't

2011-03-06 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alien

On Ubuntu 10.10, alien 8.81 tries to build a .deb from a .rpm and
reports success. However, the .deb file doesn't exist. The same build
was working on Karmic.

One example is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1692981

Another example is building the FX printer driver from RPM for use with
Dell 1320c.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2010-12-30 Thread Sam Brightman
If you read that Redhat bug - and specifically my comment on it - you
will see that the title is misleading. It was probably wrongly closed
when it was also being moved against gnome-screensaver (and should have
been retitled).

Further, it probably IS the same bug as this - the underlying issue is
with gnome-screensaver grabbing input devices. This manifests in several
different situations.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2010-12-29 Thread Sam Brightman
This issue is also a problem when using synergy for input device
sharing, or virtual machines (see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=569830). In addition, there
is a significant delay whilst the screen is locked, during which time
input is still accepted and could be used maliciously. It is a security
issue and should be fixed.

I think the attitude of the gnome-screensaver team is clear from their
FAQ:

Why doesn't my screen lock when I'm logged in as root?

gnome-screensaver will blank the screen but will not lock. This is for
security reasons. Seriously, it is very unwise to login as root in the
first place. Try logging in as an unprivileged user and using sudo or su
instead.

This is INSANE. Deliberately create an even bigger problem to force
people to do things your way?!

[Bug 689399] [NEW] evolution icons for delete/cancel are non-intuitive

2010-12-12 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The evolution toolbar has an icon for delete and an icon for cancel
current email operation. There are several problems with this:

* the icons are similar, both visually indicate almost the same concept
* in fact, they are (in my view) the wrong way around. the cancel icon
signifies delete to me. and probably the delete is more like cancel
* the cancel operation icon is arguable not important enough to be in the
toolbar in the first place, but even so there should be clear design separation

The icons should be changed to be more distinct and indicative of
function.

[Bug 689069] [NEW] During upgrade both keep and replace can be destructive

2010-12-11 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When system configuration files change between releases, the user is
offered a choice of Keep or Replace. It is possible to view the
differences between the existing and new files, but this may not be
particularly informative depending on the nature and amount of changes.
Further, there are possible situations where both actions are
destructive: not accepting new changes may be break software if the
format has changed (or fail to close a security problem), whilst not
keeping existing changes may e.g. stop hardware working. The user should
be given better advice at the very least, and additionally there should
be more options for resolution:

a) advise user that generally you should accept new changes, but if you have
modified files for yourself you should make the changes again before rebooting
b) advise the user of the presence of .dpkg-* files, link to more information
on how to use them

better still:

c) offer option to manually resolve the situation (as per VCS)
d) automatically diff the existing file against the initial version of the file
for the old version, and either:
i) automatically install the new version and then apply the patch
ii) in the likely event that this is too difficult/troublesome, at least
present the user with the differences from the *original* AND offer ability to
include them in the new version automatically if the user confirms (in addition
to c))

If there was the possibility of marking certain files/sections of files
as subject to format or critical (security/system-breaking) changes then
almost all cases that didn't fit these criteria could be handled
automatically. However, I guess this would involved a lot more work for
package maintainers, and possibly parsing of the files.

Hence, handling all of these situations automatically is likely to be
very difficult. But the current situation is not informative for
beginners, not flexible for more advanced users, and doesn't often even
basic intelligence for common use cases. There is also the risk of
neither of the current options working, as mentioned above. The current
process could be improved enormously without advanced work.

[Bug 317819] Re: Evolution shows false unread messages in folder

2010-12-09 Thread Sam Brightman
I believe this bug is still valid. I experience it in 9.10, it is also
reported here:

http://readlist.com/lists/suse.com/suse-linux-e/37/189573.html

I can provide more information: it does not fix itself if you click away
from the folder and back again. I am using IMAP. I believe that the
title is inaccurate; there are in fact unread messages in the folder.
When this problem occurs, you can remove the unread filter and use next
or previous unread message commands to reach the messages. For me, they
show up as normal, but they have an invalid date (?). One idea is that
this is an issue with the index of the messages: I noticed that as you
sort by date or click the unread filter on and off whilst having a date-
based sort, the messages with invalid dates will move position.
Presumably they cannot be ordered consistently because of the nature of
the sort algorithm.

[Bug 45989] Re: Installation to second disk confuses drive numbering

2010-12-09 Thread Sam Brightman
This bug was still a problem long after UUIDs started being used (before
Karmic). For a serious bug to exist for 4.5 years and then be marked
invalid based on an assumption doesn't indicate a very good respect for
the average user's ability to have a bootable system. You can see from
the comment above that there are problems in the 2009/10 releases as
well. Additionally, one of the parts of this bug is that the second disk
is chosen, and the MBR is written on the first disk. Unless the disk ID
changes during the installer's progress, this would not be solved by
UUIDs.

This has been a problem for a long time, and affects usability quite
seriously - if you have limited vertical space, you want you accounts
ordered so that the most commonly used one is at the top (and if you use

unnecessary mousing and scrolling at the moment, and for the last few

[Bug 684989] [NEW] Default theme doesn't return after toggling high contrast option

2010-12-03 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I tried the high contrast accessibility option straight after upgrade
(i.e. before restricted graphics driver installation) at gdm login
screen. The theme correctly changed from dark (in particular, black bar
at bottom edge) to a high contrast version (white bar). However,
immediately disabling the option again did not return the original
theme. A third theme, somehow in between the two, was used. Several more
toggles and open/closes of the accessibility options did not help.
Restarting gdm or rebooting did not help. The link below suggested
reinstalling gdm, which did work.

[Bug 209513] Re: After upgrade, Update standard folders to current language threatens to rename your home folder

2010-12-03 Thread Sam Brightman
I believe comment 12 is the key here. The dialogue has a very poor
explanation but is trying to do the right thing. After confirming my
configuration was similar to comment 12, I proceeded with yes and it
all worked fine. I also noticed that my .config/user-dirs.locale
contained en-US (my old setting) before accepting the changes and en-
GB (the new setting) after accepting.

It is simply noticing either old default, manual changes, or defaults
for languages that didn't used to have translations are pointing to the
wrong place, and now we have a more sensible default - either triggered
by user changing the locale or a translations update.

In my case it looked like it was trying to rename my Desktop to
Downloads. What is really happening is that my downloads location was
in fact Desktop (I think this was the old default?), and it simply
wanted to give it the proper name. I would guess that if you didn't
trigger this by changing language, then your translations have been
updated. For example, your English-India pack used to be missing the
Music translation so defaulted to /home/user. When the missing
translation is filled in, it tries to confirm that the setting is
/home/user/Music, fails, and asks you what to do.

I think the behavior is desirable in most cases, but the explanation
needs massive improvement. The only case I can imagine this being
undesirable behavior would be if the user had manually (and
deliberately) changed hiis directories from the defaults.

[Bug 614742] Re: [meta] cannot add facebook account, facebook does not update and more

Regarding testing: is it not possible to send the version number as part
of some kind of client ID so you can see from your Facebook API account
which versions are being used? And maybe test changes probabilistically
- i.e. decide at runtime whether to use the old or new method. This
would temporarily complicate the code of course, but once it's all
understood the complexity can be removed again.
