So the dialog gets placed centered to the window, but sometimes that makes it end up offscreen? Re: [Bug 797040] [NEW] update-manager shakes + wobbles in Unity Launcher before being ready
I believe what's happening here is that the update manager window is being denied focus because it requests not to be focussed on map initially (in fact, I think it requests to be started minimized too) and because it was initially denied focus we set the _NET_WM_STATE_DEMANDS_ATTENTION state on _NET_WM_STATE. "Unity bar" is ambiguous here, I assume you mean the launcher (the stack of icons on the left) but you could also mean the panel. That might stop this problem from occurring. Just a theory. Compiz uses the last bound pixmap to texture in animations for windows that have been unmapped or destroyed. If the application calls XClearArea () before being unmapped then compiz will use the last bound pixmap, which may be white. > > -- > You received this bug notification because you are a member of Unity > Bugs, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687567 > > Title: > Global menu causes white "flashes" when scrubbing/moving with mouse > fast over menus > > Status in Unity: > Confirmed > Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu: > Confirmed > > Bug description: > When I open menu in some application and then move mouse fast to the > left or right so different items are expanded I see ugly white flash > before content of the menu is rendered. > > To manage notifications about this bug go to: > https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/687567/+subscriptions > -- Sam Spilsbury -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687567 Title: Global menu causes white "flashes" when scrubbing/moving with mouse fast over menus To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/687567/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Non-LTS releases are places where we land software that is coming out of upstreams and polish it for our users. Of course, I understand that there is a bar of stability that we aim to achieve, and of course, I understand that we've fallen short (way short, and this is my fault as the maintainer of compiz) of that bar, however that's not to say that progress must be made, hard decisions have to be taken etc. I'm not going to try to provide justification for why things were done the way they were during the N cycle. It was difficult for everyone, most notably because the entire stack was completely rewritten from the ground up. Providing packages for users to use during the 'classic' session of the 0.8.x release series of compiz is something that we could have done. However, I believe that the burden here far outweighs the benefits of switching to 0.9.x completely. Shipping packages for 0.8.x would mean that we'd have to distro-patch all of compiz 0.9 or 0.8 to provide separate binary names in the packages. It also breaks upgrade paths when users are upgrading and they need to maintain two sets of plugins for 0.8 and 0.9. Finally, when we want to remove compiz 0.8 from the system, there's no sane way in apt that we could replace it without introducing artificial conflicts. Additionally, I think that shipping the 0.8.x series would have had far more wide reaching effects than just having to put in the effort to maintain an outdated stack. First of all, like we saw with distributions that shipped KDE4 and KDE3 simultaneously, KDE4 was the victim of an immediate backlash and everyone reverted back to KDE3. The result of this is that KDE4 got hardly any end user testing and this seriously stifled the development of KDE, since the developers didn't know what users priorities were in the bug reports. Now even today, only now are people starting to get used to KDE again. But the fact that users were given an option to "opt-out" of that testing means that the KDE project was seriously crippled in being able to determine its priorities. I don't think that compiz 0.9.x would have matured so quickly in the same way that it did during the N cycle if we didn't receive the same amount of testing that we did. Being able to sift through all the bug reports showed us the actual usage patterns of normal users and allows the developers to address those problems. For example, I don't use any Qt apps which use the system tray (not a fan of skype) and I surefire would not have noticed this bug (which is a race condition in the way reparenting works in compiz) had users not tested it. The moral of the story here is that if we provide users the option to run away from the problems, then the discourse turns from "solutions are created by the developers who fix the problems" to "solutions are created by users who work around the problems". I believe that the latter mindset is an incredibly dangerous one to have, since it encourages developers to stay in "maintenance mode" on old codebases, which eventually leads to more stagnant, rigid code which cannot be improved easily, which leads to increased fragility and increased burnout over time as developers are constrained in creating new solutions. Of course, I also recognize that "forcing" ordinary users to be the test ground for new software is also not a good mindset to have, since it increases complacency in users for what perfection we really should be striving for. As such, I believe we require a balance, and the solution to that problem is to invite more people in to learn the code, to fix it and to take ownership of it and give it a direction rather than either being fearful to make big leaps because we give users the option to run away or dropping bombs on users because we can. > > There are numerous other problems with the current version of compiz, > numerous other reasons to want to stay at 0.8.6 for now (for example, > the newer version crashes every window decorator except the unity- > window-decorator, such as emerald, etc.) -- this is not a knock on > compiz or its developers, of course; no software is free of bugs, and > early in the lifecycle of every new major overhaul, there will be its > share of problems. Re: [Bug 731685] Re: Panel shadow conflicts with Window shadow in Ubuntu Classic Desktop Session
In case you're wondering, the relevant code for the shadow clipping is here: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~smspillaz/compiz- core/trunk/view/head:/plugins/decor/src/decor.cpp#L77 What that does is for panels at least, recalculates every time a window changes geometry, what should be "overlapping" the panel shadow and then creates a region (eg nonrectangular space) of where the panel shadow should be drawn so as /not/ to overlap those windows. Then on ::glDraw it clips the drawing of the panel shadow to that space. However, this only takes into account the window position on the assumption that *every window is exactly rectangular and not transformed*. Which is obviously not the case considering that the decorations have rounded corners. Its probably possible to re-use some of the code from blur here: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~smspillaz/compiz-core/trunk/view/head:/plugins/blur/src/blur.cpp#L1215, which is what blur uses to get the *exact nonrectangular clipping area* for the blur underneath the window. Unfortunately that code is largely undocumented and I haven't been able to make it work for this case. Maybe a mathematical genius can figure it out :) On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 3:31 PM, Sam Spilsbury wrote: > On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 3:16 PM, Daniel van Vugt wrote: >> If it's unity-window-decorator that draws the normal window shadows, why >> shouldn't it also be made to draw the panel shadow in the same way? In gnome-classic it draws the panel shadow, correct. In unity, unity actually draws its own shadow on the panel. This is because there's a giant hac^Winnovative solution (tm) that we use to ensure that the panels get stacked correctly, yet we can blit them to the screen with OpenGL. So what actually happens is that the input windows for the panels are InputOutput and generally filled with garbage, yet we don't actually draw them (see unityshell.cpp:UnityScreen::getWindowPaintList). Instead, we draw all the screen elements directly using OpenGL. Because of this, the decor plugin is never able to "see" the panel being drawn and thus it cant put the shadow that the decorator asked to put on the panel on the panel. This isn't really too important for the unity case though, since there we're able to draw the panel shadow without painting the window twice (expensive) > > I guess it falls into the bucket of re-unifying compiz-window-decorator > and unity-window-decorator. To clarify, this is because shadows are drawn at the same level that their respective window is, so because we have to stack panels on top of everything else, the shadow would also go on top of everything else which looks ugly. Drawing the shadow underneath everything else means that we essentially have to paint panels twice, which isn't really that great. > > Fixing this would be quite complicated, since it requires that you > project the full geometry including the shape region of the decoration > in order to find a perfect intersection region. > > On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 2:38 PM, Daniel van Vugt wrote: >> Two screenshots are better than one... >> >> A theory: I suspect the problem here is unity-window-decorator. Re: [Bug 731685] Re: Panel shadow conflicts with Window shadow in Ubuntu Classic Desktop Session
The problem is that the clipping algorithm for the shadows is rather ... simple. Basically when doing the panel shadow we look for windows that are intersecting the shadow and don't draw the shadow there. Fixing this would be quite complicated, since it requires that you project the full geometry including the shape region of the decoration in order to find a perfect intersection region. SRU Test Case: 1) Open Chromium 2) Right click in the chrome area and uncheck "use system titlebar and borders" 3) Maximize it 4) Unmaximize it 5) Chromium should not have two decorations ALSO 1) Open Chromium 2) Maximize it 3) Right click in the chrome area and uncheck "use system titlebar and borders" - there should be a window offset bug here, that's a separate issue which will be looked into. Re: [Compiz] [Bug 764282] Re: Can't disable active window shadow in compiz-decorator
You can change it by editing the theme file eg /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml Also, if you use a theme which doesn't explicitly set shadow properties, the settings in the compiz decor plugin will take effect. [Bug 780572] Re: viewport manager (to search/create viewport)
So I see this breaking down into a few parts. First of all, to assign names to viewports, have a look at workspacenames[1]. That provides an interface in ccsm to assign a name to a workspace. What you'll probably want to do is change that so that pressing a keybinding provides text entry to change the name of a workspace and then pressing another keybinding allows you to search them. Have a look at scalefilter[2] on how to do text entry[2]. Since the number of workspaces in compiz is handled as an option, you'll need to change the option in core to do that. That's just a case of something like CompOption &opt = screen->getOption ("hsize"); CompOption::Value v; v.set ((int) horizontal_workspaces); screen->setOption ("hsize", opt); CompOption &opt = screen->getOption ("vsize"); CompOption::Value v; v.set ((int) vertical_workspaces); screen->setOption ("hsize", opt); Tracking which windows are where is pretty easy, just check the window positions and hook ::moveNotify () to read window position changes. Then you can drop empty workspaces. However note that you can't remove an individual workspace, so if you remove one in between two windows and shrink the number of available workspaces then you'll have to shift windows on adjacent workspaces around so that they're still visible. After testing with and without Compiz, I'm more or less convinced > that links always work when Compiz is off and occasionally do not work > when Compiz is on. They won't work when the window is not focused, yes. Have a look at section 6.3 of the ICCCM for why they can't work: http://tronche.com/gui/x/icccm/sec-6.html . In order to raise windows we need to ensure that we can capture button clicks on them (otherwise click raise won't work on anything other than the titlebar). By doing this it will trigger a "grab" on the other application and it gets a LeaveNotify event (the same kind of event that is given when the cursor leaves the subwindow). ... unfortunately there is a bug in GTK+ where it does not actually check the *reason* the LeaveNotify event was given, so the link will not work in the case where we have the grab. I poked through the GTK+ code to try and figure out why this was, but I couldn't get a substantive answer. I've changed the compiz code in N to reflect this problem, so now we do passive button grabs as little as possible, and only on windows that we actually own. [Bug 767095] Re: 1 pixel icons in notification-area-applet when compiz is the windows manager
First of all, if this bug affects you, please, use the "affects me" button. Do not add comments to the bug unless you have useful information that might assist the developers in fixing the bug. This is what bugtrackers are for. It is more efficient for the devlelopers when the comments contain useful information. Second of all, DX have been looking into this issue. It is complicated and make take some time. However, we will re-prioritise to get this in for the next SRU. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/767095 Title: 1 pixel icons in notification-area-applet when compiz is the windows manager -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hitting alt-space should still bring up the window menu. The reason we have it in the decorator is that I'm trying to keep platform dependent code out of compiz. > > -- > You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz > packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786191 > > Title: > window menu doesn't open with decorations turned off > > ___ > Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz > Post to : com...@lists.launchpad.net > Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz > More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp > -- Sam Spilsbury -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786191 Title: window menu doesn't open with decorations turned off -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Compiz] [Bug 786191] [NEW] window menu doesn't open with decorations turned off
Right, the window menu is provided by the window decoration. I'm pretty sure that you need a decorator running to get the window menu On Sat, May 21, 2011 at 10:23 PM, J wrote: > Public bug reported: > > Binary package hint: compiz > > With window decorations disabled, defined mouse and keyboard shortcuts > (in CCSM's General Options) should cause the window menu to appear, but > don't. > > ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) > Importance: Undecided > Status: New > > -- > You received this bug notification because you are a member of compiz > packagers, which is subscribed to compiz in Ubuntu. > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786191 > > Title: > window menu doesn't open with decorations turned off > > ___ > Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~compiz > Post to : com...@lists.launchpad.net > Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~compiz > More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp > -- Sam Spilsbury -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/786191 Title: window menu doesn't open with decorations turned off -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 709461] Re: Application windows can sometimes fail to display and will mask regions of the screen
Everyone, I know this issue exists, I've been trying to debug it for a long time. The most useful thing for me now would be _detailed_ _instructions_ to _reproduce_ it. Please don't comment saying that you are also affected unless you have found a way to reliably or at least semi-reliably trigger it. Can you walk through step by step from login to reproducing this bug? Eg, which applications you opened, where you clicked etc. On Thu, May 19, 2011 at 4:30 PM, Peeyoosh Sangolekar wrote: > I second #115. This appears to be related to alt+tab switcher. It is enough. The introspection stuff has not been rewritten for 0.9.x since I had no time to do it, that's why methods don't show up in dbus-tool On Thu, May 12, 2011 at 12:45 AM, Mario Kemper (Romario) wrote: > I don't believe it is enough to s/allscreens/screen0/. [Bug 784462] Re: CCSM cann't change brightness (by grab) unity's menubar and unity's dockbar
Unfortunately it isn't something we'll be able to fix because the panel and launcher aren't drawn like regular windows. And this fact is fundamental to the way they work. ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: New => Won't Fix ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Sam "SmSpillaz" Spilsbury (smspillaz) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/784462 Title: CCSM cann't change brightness (by grab) unity's menubar and unity's dockbar -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
