[Bug 877064] [NEW] Can't type at speed in Dash search box
Public bug reported: When I type in the Dash search box, I need to enter each letter slowly and individually. If I just type at speed, most of the letters are left out. I don't have this problem when entering text elsewhere. (It seems like Dash might be making some tap/press distinction and only responding to key presses in the search box, which is terribly bad behavior. [Bug 671279] [NEW] Japanese PDF does not display correctly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince Specifically, Japanese characters display as blocks instead of falling back to an available font (in this specific case, Properties Fonts lists the requested font as ArialUnicodeMS-UniJIS-UTF16-H). A few other bugs suggested installing poppler-data, but that didn't help. The required fonts exist on the system, and I can copy the illegible text from the PDF to gedit (or any other program) and have it appear as expected. The file also doesn't render correctly in acroread (even with acroread- fonts installed), so I'm not sure if the solution to the problem lies in evince or some other package. [Bug 158017] Re: nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access
#7: You're misreading the bug report. The problem isn't that the network fails to connect and asks for the _network_ password. It asks for the user's _login_ password to use gnome-keyring's default keyring to _look up_ the network password before trying to connect. That bug, which is the bug originally reported above, still exists in Karmic. See bug #34898. gdm uses a pam module to unlock the default gnome- keyring keyring on login. gnome-screensaver should do the same thing when the user enters their password to unlock the screen. That would solve this bug. ** Changed in: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158017 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 158017] Re: nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access
Both /etc/pam.d/gdm and /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver contain: authoptionalpam_gnome_keyring.so However, only the former contains: session optionalpam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start That's how it should be according to the documentation: http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/Pam Is gnome-keyring-daemon supposed to be killed on hibernate? If that's the case, then it should be sufficient to append auto_start to the end of the auth line in /etc/pam.d/gnome-screensaver, since that pam module checks if the keyring daemon is already running and doesn't start it again if it is. -- nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158017 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

After a little investigation, it seems gnome-keyring-d _isn't_ dying on hibernate, at least not always. So either it's dying sporadically for some reason, or there's some other reason why that line in gnome- screensaver's PAM config (which should unlock the default keyring) doesn't prevent network-manager from thinking the keyring is still locked. -- nm-applet looses right to access keyring after long hibernation and has no way to restore access https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158017 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 477773] [NEW] vfat external hard drive goes read-only during rsync
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: devicekit-disks After upgrading to Karmic, the script I was using to back up my data (to an NTFS formatted external hard drive) no longer works (my ext3 formatted external hard drive still works fine). The disk mounts with the following options when I plug it in (from mount -l): /dev/sdb1 on /media/MEDIABOX type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,flush) [MEDIABOX] I thought it mounted as ntfs previously, but my recollection on that point may be wrong. I can't get it to mount as ntfs now. The following problems result when I run the rsync command that worked previously: 1. rsync tries to copy far more files than it should (possibly too many even if --size-only is set; if --size-only is not set, it tries to copy basically everything, even though I am using --modify-window=1) 2. rsync yields the following errors, even if run with sudo: rsync: mkstemp [filename on external HD] failed: Read-only file system (30) rsync: failed to set times on [filename on external HD]: Read-only file system (30) [... many, many instances of those same errors ...] 3. Looking at syslog yields the following: Nov 7 14:51:28 system42 kernel: [100893.332080] FAT: Filesystem error (dev sdb1) Nov 7 14:51:28 system42 kernel: [100893.332103] fat_free_clusters: deleting FAT entry beyond EOF Nov 7 14:51:28 system42 kernel: [100893.332112] File system has been set read-only That looks troublingly like a bug described here: http://www.osnews.com/story/9681/The_vfat_file_system_and_Linux/page3/ Troubling because that article claims: Under Linux Kernel 2.4.x., a limit of the cluster data type results in data loss, as soon as the vfat file system holds around 130GB. In Kernel 2.6.x., this problem was - rather accidently - solved... (The drive I'm using is 500GB and mostly full, 435 GB used.) And I am indeed running a 2.6 kernel: $ uname -r 2.6.31-14-generic So is this a regression of a kernel bug? The data on the disk hasn't been lost or corrupted as far as I can tell, though I don't really feel I can trust the backup files touched by rsync post upgrade (at least not until I can rerun it after this problem is fixed). Looking at the disk in nautilis confirms that it has indeed been set read-only. If I unmount and remove the disk, then plug it in again, it remounts, and I can again read and write files. Running rsync again still results in the same problem. Submitting this to devicekit-disks because I guess it has something to do with the disk mounting differently in Karmic than it did in Intrepid... although the problem could well lie elsewhere. [Bug 477782] [NEW] eSATA external drive requires password to mount
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: devicekit-disks When I plug in an eSATA external hard drive, it would appear in the Places menu but not automount (which is also a bit of a problem, but see bug #452256). When I clicked on it in the Places menu, it would then mount and I could access my files. Since upgrading to Karmic, it asks me for a password before mounting. This is a bit of an annoyance. Presumably, non-administrator users (at least, those with the Access external storage devices automatically permission) should be able to mount external hard drives without an administrator password. At the very least, I don't see why the security policy for USB hard drives and eSATA hard drives should be different. [Bug 410407] Re: [READ DESCRIPTION] Flash is not recognizing mouse clicks in multiple situations
I tried the procedure in #16, then when i ran into a wall of segfaults, reinstalled nspluginwrapper and reinstalled flashplugin-installer, and for some reason the problem seems to have gone away. GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 seems to be the solution to a lot of problems that are new in Karmic. [Bug 475800] [NEW] Tray icon does not appear on startup in Karmic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: scim After upgrading to Karmic, I found that the tray icon for scim no longer appeared in the notification area as before. SCIM still worked normally (I could switch input modes via keyboard shortcuts). When I looked at Panel GTK under SCIM Setup, Show Tray Icon was in fact selected under Misc. When I deselected that and clicked apply, then reselected it and clicked apply again, the tray icon appeared in the notification area as expected. However, upon starting my computer, the icon was gone again, although the option in question was still checked. Perhaps SCIM is being started before whatever handles the notification area, and then that is never told to add the icon for SCIM? [Bug 410337] Re: Log in screen is confusing, not clear what to do
I second comment #5. I'd much prefer that behavior, and at least having the option would be good. (Yes, you can hack it by going to gconf-editor as the right user and setting /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list to true, but even that doesn't work quite as expected anymore: You have to click login before you even get the text field to enter a user name, when previously the field would appear immediately, with focus.) -- Log in screen is confusing, not clear what to do https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/410337 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 276366] [NEW] Ask for master password on startup option
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 When you have a master password set, Firefox asks for it when you first load a tab with a login form that you've stored a password for (even if the tab is in the background) or when an extension (like Foxmarks) asks for a stored password. While this does have the advantage of asking for the master password only when it's needed, it can be rather disruptive. An alternate approach would be to have Firefox ask for the master password immediately at startup, blocking access to the password manager if the password is entered incorrectly or the dialog is canceled. Users should be able to choose between the two configurations, as the current setup might still be more convenient for users who use the password manager infrequently.
