[Bug 713848] [NEW] Sound Juicer HAL daemon may not be running

2011-02-05 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

Running an updated ubuntu Natty from Feb 5th

If I run sound juicer just as sound-juicer it complains No CD-ROM
drivers found

If i specify my drive using sound-juicer -d /dev/scd0 it complains
that the HAL daemon may not be running.

Isn't HAL deprecated now?

Either way even if I start hald I still get the HAL daemon may not be
running error when I run sound-juicer -d /dev/scd0

[Bug 604087] [NEW] iscsitarget fails with can't create a target 2 0

2010-07-10 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: iscsitarget

Using iscsitarget on Maverick as of July 10 2010 with the latest updates
setting up an iscsi target fails with the following error:

Jul 10 12:11:39 udc ietd: can't create a target 2 0

If the latest release iscsitarget-1.4.20.1 is installed this problem
goes away.

My assumption is that there are kernel compatibility issues with the
current version in Maverick.

To repeat:
create a simple image in /tmp

dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/test.img bs=1024 count=50k

Create a basic /etc/ietd.conf setup

--
Target iqn.2010-07.org.example:storage.lun0
Lun 0 Path=/tmp/test.img,Type=fileio
--

service iscsitarget start

Observe the error in /var/log/daemon.log

service iscsitarget stop
rmmod iscsi_trgt

download, and install the latest from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/iscsitarget/files/

service iscsitarget start

The error is gone and your clients should be able to discover/mount the
iscsi disk.

[Bug 542929] [NEW] cursor disappears on one of my displays when using nouveau with two monitors

2010-03-20 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Using the latest lucid package set of 3.20.2010 in the Lucid repos I
have an issue where my mouse cursor will randomly disappear on one of my
screens. I can still move windows and click on things on the screen
where my cursor has disappeared but I cannot see where it is. This has
happened on both of my displays so it is not favoring the primary over
the secondary.

I saw this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/nouveau/+bug/63905 which
mentioned the nouveau driver and lead me to an old freedesktop bug that
I believe is a separate issue.

[Bug 514603] [NEW] When shutting down from System-Shutdown all applications are closed before password is verified

2010-01-29 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

If I choose to shutdown my system from the menu the first operation that
takes place is all of my applications are closed. It seems more like
first I should be prompted for my password and once I succeed in
authenticating myself it then closes my X session.

When I cancel out of typing in my password I would expect to get back to
my desktop that I had setup. That is unfortunately not the case if I
click cancel I am dropped to the GDM login page. From there if I click
shutdown or reboot I am no longer asked for my password the application
just refocuses on the login window. I would expect a password dialog so
I can shut down my system from the GUI.

If I click hibernate, however, the system hibernates. That seems like
exactly what was trying to be avoided with the password entry for
shutdown/reboot, namely some normal user stopping the system.

I am using the latest version of Lucid as of 1.29.2010.

If this is one of those well the software is alpha etc etc I am fine
with that I just wanted to make sure it was known.

[Bug 417830] [NEW] update-grub runs too often during upgrade/removal of linux kernels

2009-08-23 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Removing two kernels involves running update-grub four times when it
should only be run once. I am not sure if this should be filed against
the linux-image, dpkg, or against grub itself. I went with grub
initially since that is where update-grub lives.

[Bug 387161] Re: Koala: External SATA-USB Drive no longer being identified properly

2009-07-18 Thread Scott Zawalski
Thanks for the information, I did a quick remove without downgrading
gvfs and my drive also worked right away.

Looks like devicekit-disks is our problem.

[Bug 56526] Re: GUI apps unmount multiple partitions when one is requested

2009-07-16 Thread Scott Zawalski
I am changing this to new to see if anyone can confirm this that is
running Karmic.

Steps to confirm:
Partition a thumb drive or any external drive with two partitions
Inserting it should mount both
Try to unmount just one of them and both partitions should unmount.

[Bug 387161] [NEW] Koala: External SATA-USB Drive no longer being identified properly

2009-06-14 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Running latest Koala.

I recently started running in to issues where my external SATA - USB
drive no longer initializes correctly in Koala. It works fine in Windows
and in other variants of linux (Even previous version of Ubuntu) so I am
suspicious of recent updates. This happens with kernels older than
2.6.30 as well.

For what it is worth the enclosure is a NexStar CX from Vantec

Dmesg output:

[Bug 331449] Re: amarok in jaunty is broken

2009-03-30 Thread Scott Zawalski
After hours of frustration and trying out SVN on a daily basis I
installed this Bogdanb's perfect PPA of 1.4 for Jaunty.

https://launchpad.net/~bogdanb/+archive/ppa

I would strongly recommend including this in Jaunty as 2.X is very far
from being ready.

One bug I am watching upstream that is still active is the import collection
bug:

[Bug 350853] [NEW] firefox upgrades need to be more robost

2009-03-29 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The way firefox currently upgrades is disastrous. There needs to be
hooks that ask the user when they quit firefox if they want to upgrade
instead of upgrading over the currently installed version of firefox
while it is running.

With the web becoming more prevalent and people keeping more important
data in a browser it is unacceptable to expect them to restart their
browser (which sometimes they can't even do properly if firefox has been
upgraded underneath them) whenever an upgrade is done.

The ideal process would be:

Download the deb file and wait for user interaction.
Have firefox check for an upgraded deb file in a specific place.
If firefox sees the deb have it ask the user if they want to upgrade which
would involve a restart.
if Yes == Install and restart
if No == Ask later (i.e. when they quit firefox.)

If the upgrade is present and no firefox processes exist, install update.

If at login and/or during bootup there is an upgrade waiting for firefox
install it.

Do you have IPV6 enabled or did you blacklist it like most people did?
an ifconfig dev will tell you if you have an ipv6 address. Also do you
have localhost defined in /etc/hosts like is now default in Jaunty?

The workaround works fine, but if we are going to enable ipv6 by default
a real fix needs to be put into place.

[Bug 281882] Re: ssh hangs in initial handshaking when using IPv6

2009-03-23 Thread Scott Zawalski
I have the same problem and it is quite simple to repeat even on your
local computer:

 [~]$ssh -vvv localhost
OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5ubuntu1, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007
debug1: Reading configuration data /home/cowbud/.ssh/config
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to localhost [::1] port 22.

It will hang at debug1 for a good 5 minutes then continue on to IPv4.

This is really a drag when I connect to a remote ssh server and forward
a lot of ssh ports to random local ports. It makes sshing to localhost
painfully slow.

However if I ssh to 127.0.0.1 it goes immediately since it bypasses all
ipv6 fun.

[Bug 331449] Re: amarok in jaunty is broken

2009-03-02 Thread Scott Zawalski
I'd just like to reiterate the fact that i rescanned my whole collection
and many albums are just completely missing. These are mp3s, Amarok has
supported those for ages and yet it doesn't find them. I am reduced to
using the file browsing side of the application to find songs that are
actually in the scanned folders.

[Bug 331449] Re: amarok in jaunty is broken

2009-03-02 Thread Scott Zawalski
It isn't that I can't play mp3s it is that when I scan my collection
random songs do not show up in it.

For example if I search for Nine Inch nails. Several CDs show up and
others are just not there despite being in the same directory as the
other imported NiN CDs and being the same format.

Perhaps I should file a bug upstream.

I would think we would leave kde3 in Universe still?

[Bug 315343] [NEW] command-not-found should suggest using aptitude not apt-get

2009-01-08 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: command-not-found

While this is similar to bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/command-not-found/+bug/92862
I didn't want to hijack it.

Basically I think the suggestion of using sudo apt-get install
should be changed to sudo aptitude install .

Aptitude is a lot better at dependency removal than apt-get, unless this
has recently changed and I am mistaken? My understanding is that
aptitude adds more data to the db when installing packages that apt-get
does not pay attention to. As such it seems it would be more
advantageous for users to use aptitude for installing packages they may
remove later than apt-get.

[Bug 314947] [NEW] Jaunty: Volume Applet 2.25.2 does not stay on one screen when close to an edge

2009-01-07 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Program: Volume Applet 2.25.2
Distro: Jaunty

If you have the new volume applet close to your second screen (At the far right
or far left of your panel) when using more than one screen it splits itself
across both screens. Since most monitors don't line up 100% this makes it hard

[Bug 105694] Re: Ubuntu should add user 'mpd' to audio group upon install

2007-04-11 Thread Scott Zawalski
Since you are using edgy and feisty is going to be released this month I
am rejecting this bug. Feisty handles this properly and it is unlikely
that a fix will be backported to edgy.

Thank you for your bug report.

[Bug 103146] compiz hide and unhide from systray does not appear on correct screen

2007-04-04 Thread Scott Zawalski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Using two screens when hiding and unhiding programs that minimize to the
systray compiz incorrectly redisplays them on the edge of the first
screen. This is with Twinview enabled.

This has been tested with Liferea, Amarok, Gaim, and windows programs
that minimize to the tray using wine.

Compiz version:1:0.3.6-1ubuntu13
Feisty updated as of April 4th 2007

Behavior: unhiding of minimized to systray program appears on the first
screen not the second where it original was minimized from.
