[Bug 395565] Re: atheros wifi not working with kernel 2.6.31-1

2009-07-12 Thread Sergey
Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network
Adapter (rev 01)

My wireless link died as well after an upgrade. I found this bug, read
through it, flipped a wi-fi switch on the laptop, and got connected. So,
in my case it was just a default-off thing.

[Bug 398660] [NEW] package ttf-dejavu-extra 2.29-2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-07-12 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-dejavu

Upgrade to Karmic from Jaunty as of 2009-07-13 brought about this
problem. It looks like both ttf-dejavu-core and ttf-dejavu-extra
packages include /etc/defoma/hints/ttf-dejavu-extra.hints, and the
"-extra" one has it as empty file. Packages versions are 2.29-2.

[Bug 399911] [NEW] samsung x360 fn-keys work incorrectly

2009-07-15 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

I've tried installing the latest ubuntu jaunty 9.04 on the samsung x360 laptop
brightness key presses are ignored, dmesg output includes multiple lines
atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0x83 on isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e003 ' to make it known.
I've tried adding HAL description for X360 to file
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-misc.fdi:

After that all the fn-keys are recognized by the kernel, but the problem is
that fn-keys do not send release button events. The similar bug is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/347623
I've applied similar patch to the kernel's atkbd.c
...
static struct dmi_system_id atkbd_dmi_quirk_table[] __initdata = {
...
{
  .ident = "Samsung X360",
  .matches = {
DMI_MATCH(DMI_SYS_VENDOR,"SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LDT."),
DMI_MATCH(DMI_PRODUCT_NAME,"X360"),
  },
  .callback = atkbd_setup forced_release,
  .driver_data = atkbd_samsung_forced_release_keys,
},
...
With the new kernel after
xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL legacy
brightness keys seems to work correctly.

It would be nice if you could incorporate corresponding changes into the
main streamline of ubuntu

Thank you

[Bug 402016] [NEW] Connection to Windows Server VPN is stuck after ~16KB are received

2009-07-20 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

On Jaunty my VPN configurations (done entirely through Network Manager)
worked as expected. After upgrading to Karmic, the following happens.
The connection starts as it used to, and succeeds. Then, I started some
network-intensive process, such as smbclient or rdesktop. After
receiving approximately 16 KB of data over this VPN connection, it stops
unexpectedly, and "nothing happens" for quite a long time (I waited a
minute or two). I kill the process started earlier, stop the VPN
connection, and everything is back to normal operation.

I've included output of ifconfig at four checkpoints.

[Bug 320632] Re: tap-to-click and edge-scrolling broken in Jaunty

2009-01-25 Thread Sergey
0.99.3-1ubuntu2 fixes tap-to-click and edge scrolling on my Acer, but
left button click doesn't work reliably anymore. Very often I have to
click twice, and I suspect that it's because behind the scenes it clicks
too often. Single left click also can produce left+right and paste
current clipboard contents accidentally.

[Bug 320632] Re: tap-to-click and edge-scrolling broken in Jaunty

2009-01-26 Thread Sergey
0.99.3-2ubuntu1 improves the situation: clicking left button almost
never produces a left+right click for me, edge scrolling and double
finger scrolling (which I've never used before) work, as does tap-to-
click. Left click is still jittery (sometimes it still does left+right;
left click and drag always produces left+right instead), but it's much
better. I'm attaching the output of xinput. Thank you!

[Bug 329616] [NEW] Multiple instances of xfdesktop started simultaneously

2009-02-14 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

A recent upgrade (two-three days ago), resulted in the following
problem:

1. XFCE session starts with flickering icons on desktop and multiple windows
(attached) showing message "Unable to contact the Xfce Trash service."
2. Dozens (sometimes over 50) copies of xfdesktop process are started (see
attached output of ps).

Killing all those xfdesktop processes results in absence of desktop
wallpaper and icons, but at least the computer becomes usable. I also
tried eliminating all but one xfdesktop entries in XFCE session
configuration (Xfce4 Settings Manager -> Session and Startup -> Session
tab), but on next login the same multiple xfdesktop processes are
started again.

2009-02-06 Thread Sergey
I guess I'm lucky but here everything works:
* Tap-to-click (and double-tap to double-click);
* Left button and left-button drag-n-drop;
* Right edge scrolling;
* Two-finger vertical scrolling;
* Four-way middle button works for vertical scrolling.

[Bug 326949] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 printing is broken

2009-02-08 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

There are multiple issues with printing in Ubuntu 8.10, irrespective of
software used (Firefox 3, OO.org 2.4, Evince 2.24.1):

1. Some documents cannot be printed: the printer consumes the job, without
producing any output.
2. Only first page of some documents (pdf, HTML, odt, doc) can be printed from
any software.
3. Only first page of some documents (HTML, odt, doc) can be printed to ps/pdf
from firefox or exported to pdf from OO.org.

I have observed this issue on both amd64 and x86 versions with multiple
different printers (including virtual ones, like "print to file").
The attachment contains 3 files:
  DOC.doc - the original document that cannot be printed (the printer consumes
it without any output).
  ODT.odt - same document, but saved as ODT. Same result.
  PDF.pdf - the result of "export as PDF" of DOC.doc / ODT.odt.

[Bug 85943] [apport] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV while playing a movie in Totem

2007-02-17 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

Most likely this is because of fglrx (mine is at
7.1.0-8.33.6+2.6.20.2-8.6).

I'm using Medibuntu repository, maybe this matters. My computer is a
dual-core AMD64 with ATI X1600 videocard. I'm using fglrx driver because
it's the only one giving me 1680x1050. Sound doesn't work yet (ATI SB450
HDA Audio).

Several movies crash X when loaded in Totem. The one that can be used as
an example is at findbugs.org, it's their demo:
http://findbugs.cs.umd.edu/talks/findbugs.mov (QuickTime). VLC just
crashes, without X dying. MPlayer displays an error: error
opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

[Bug 85943] Re: [apport] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV while playing a movie in Totem

2007-02-20 Thread Sergey
I think this happened with both 8.33.6 and 8.28.8. I can try downgrading
to an older driver, but I'm not sure how that downgrade is supposed to
work with the currently installed kernel. Or should I downgrade the
kernel too to try older fglrx? Thanks!

Also, I found this URL to report problems to ATI about this driver, I guess I
should try using it...

[Bug 272856] Re: general protection fault: 0000 [*] SMP in drm_open_helper, seq_open, inotify_init, rtnl_dump_ifinfo, call_usermodehelper_setup, get_UCSname, d_alloc

2008-12-02 Thread Sergey
During a relatively short run, memtest found one error; I don't have the
memory address though. I've been meaning to run the test again for a
really long time but couldn't so far. None of the symptoms I described
ever happened in kernel released with 8.10 or its updates, so I'm
inclined to disregard the memory error and blame it on pre-release code
:-).

[Bug 268405] Re: thunderbird-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in PL_DHashTableOperate()

2008-11-26 Thread Sergey
Summary: Thunderbird crashes trying to complete sending a message
initiated by Firefox's Send Link menu item.

Steps to reproduce:
  1. Close Thunderbird, make sure there are no Thunderbird processes running;
  2. Open (or switch to an open instance of) Firefox;
  3. Go to any site, select File->Send Link;
  4. Thunderbird will start and new email message window will appear;
  5. Go to a different site (or tab) in Firefox, select File->Send Link again.

Expected Result: new message windows are usable and email messages in
them can be sent successfully.

Actual Result: Thunderbird process crashes.

With those instructions I was able to reproduce the bug, but in current
versions I can't (latest Firefox 3.0.4, Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 and just
upgraded 2.0.0.18, Ubuntu 8.10 as of 2008-11-26) everything works. It's
not a problem anymore, thank you!

[Bug 186218] [NEW] libsane-extras is behind one micro version and can't be installed with libsane

2008-01-26 Thread Sergey
Public bug reported:

On my Hardy installation with the latest package data, libsane is at
1.0.19-cvs20071213-4ubuntu1, and libsane-extras is at 1.0.18.12. When I
try to install libsane-extras, it conflicts with libsane. Many important
backends for SANE are in libsane-extras, including the one for Epson
scanners that I need, and it would be great if libsane-extras were
installable in Hardy.

Firstly, I still have SPE installed. Secondly, WinPDB seems perfectly
usable without SPE so it probably shouldn't be auto-removable if there's
no SPE on the machine.

It's spe 0.8.4c-1~hardy1 now and the problem appears to be gone after I
reinstalled winpdb directly. I was under impression that there's some
"flag" in .deb packages that tells whether something is usable directly
or is "just a library." I didn't know it's determined by how packages
are installed. Thank you!

[Bug 245015] [NEW] php5 install does not work

2008-07-02 Thread sergey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5

Installed apache via synaptics, successfully.
Needed PHP
Installed php5, does not work.

Symptom:
When trying to open a *.php page containing on my apache
server all I get is a message box asking me if I want to save or open the page.
Contents of /var/log/apache/error.log does not show a php entry.
After a day of Google found the cause: installation program does not create a
file php5.load. Manually creating it and putting a line

LoadModule php5_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so

 then placing it in the /etc/apache2/mods-availible and making a soft
link to /etc/apache2/mods-enabled helped. After restarting Apache
phpinfo worked just fine.

[Bug 121228] Re: Segfault retrieving passphrase for WiFi network

2007-06-21 Thread Sergey
I also thought originally that this is a network-manager issue, but it's
actually gnome-keyring who's at fault here. gnome-keyring and libgnome-
keyring0 were recently upgraded in gutsy to 2.19.4.1 from 0.8.1. The
latest network-manager from gutsy works great with the old version, but
breaks down completely for me with the new one. Even when I applied a
workaround mentioned here, wireless connections only lasted a few
seconds before breaking up, and network-manager was segfaulting
constantly.

So, I went to packages.ubuntu.org, downloaded libgnome-keyring0 and
gnome-keyring for feisty, and downgraded them. Everything is back to
normal now.

Some of the symptoms of network-manager 0.6.5's differences in
communication between keyring 0.8.1 and 2.19.4.1. When I login, I'm
normally prompted for my keyring password only. With the latest gutsy
version 2.19.4.1, I was instead prompted to "Deny, Allow once, Allow
always" for nm-applet. network-manager would then crash. It only
"worked" when I had keyring-manager application open at the same time,
and even then it would try to connect unsuccessfully for a long time or
connect and then crash or disconnect immediately. I'm using WPA2 PSK
(AES) with Atheros non-GPL driver (madwifi).

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 121228 ***

To summarize the solution that worked for me (from that duplicate bug),
downgrade gnome-keyring and libgnome-keyring0 to 0.8.1 (the latest
version shipped with feisty).

My apologies, I wasn't clear. l-r-m installs just fine, thank you!

I meant the xorg-driver-fglrx 8.37.6 package. I couldn't submit a
separate bug for this because this name is not in the package list on
bug submission page (it's from restricted, I guess that's why). When I
try to upgrade, Synaptic asks to install libc6-i386.

This one is from 2008-10-02 with whatever kernel was the latest at the
