This is definitely bug of this peace of software, that's why: if you doing some action with user data - do it best possible way OR warn user about low quality / no guaranty of this action. In this case if gedit so stupid, that can't use already existing library from kedit to guess file encoding, it should't try to do it at all, just show to user dialog with encoding selection, instead of give dummy result, that definitely useless at all. As Alexander A. suggested workaround is: open in gconf-editor: /apps/gedit-2/preferences/encodings/auto_detected and put cp1251 or other your native most common encoding to the top. This stops works with retarded KOI8-R, but UTF-8 will continue work as usual. This is IMHO the bug #1 for all Ubuntu newbies in Russia and over non- Latin countries - all of them ask about it and there is no known resolution without installing additional software with advanced setup (XMMS/bansee with patch, EasyTag for UTF8 tag encoding) and need Internet. Encoding to utf8 don't work in this case: mp3 music shared in readonly SMB or FTP net. If there is env variable for default gstreamer mp3 tag encoding or gconf variable it would be temporary resolution for that users that jast works. 2 month ago I faund way to make sound works after plugging/unplugging phones, boot and suspend. The reason was in /etc/apm/scripts.d/alsa. Now it works for me. Hope patch in attach helps U. As a bonus in patch added feature to almost instant sound off then close notebook and go to sleep, as it made in Mac OS X. There is a project RUSXMMS, wich add teg reconvert on the fly function to xmms (http://sourceforge.net/projects/rusxmms). Hope it'll be merged to XMMS someday. Ideal result - user variable for all mp3tags, wich works with all applications (MPD, totem, phythmbox, XMMS, Mplayer, ...). I confirm that bug - all cyrillic characters in mp3 tags looks wrong in totem and rhythmbox (tags encoding is CP1251). In forums I see phrase about enviroment variable GST_* (variable name and link lost), wich can help. But it's not worked at that time for me. Some people suggest to reconvert all (!!!) mp3 tags to UTF-8 to resolve that error - http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-76831.html. I think it's a hard way to resolve bug. I'm confirm that bag - xmms cyrillic fonts don't looks right way out of the box (screenshot attached). It was in all versions of Ubuntu, wich I use - 5.04, 5.10, 6.06. Even if I install additional xfonts packages, for example: xfonts-cronyx-misc xfonts-cronyx-75dpi xfonts-cronyx-100dpi problem is not resolving. In Ubuntu cyrillization HOWTOs there is advices to change system LOCALE to koi8-r - it's helps. But this is runing away method from bug, not resolving.
