[Bug 1213119] Re: [GIGABYTE GA-A75-UD4H] "You need to load the kernel first" when trying to select any option from grub list when using EFI (ver 2.1) and trying to install Ubuntu.

2013-10-10 Thread Shaun Turnbull
@Oliver Grawert referring to your comment and this Ask Ubuntu answer
http://askubuntu.com/a/40480/102029 confirms the use of amd64+mac iso
simply allows the BIOS installer/live session to run on a system set to
run EFI mode which ultimately would mean a non booting Ubuntu. It does
allow booting live session without the need to access firmware settings
but is running in BIOS mode.Again the work around of installing
grub-efi would need to be relied on to get Ubuntu booting EFI mode after
a BIOS installation. I am still hunting down a solution to "How to
install or boot Ubuntu live session EFI mode" The fact the amd64+mac
iso exists and has existed for a good while proves this has been a long
term problem being side stepped by those in a position to do something
about it. The blaming of firmware hardcoding appears to be used as a
convenient hood winking technique as i have proven this is not
applicable on this hardware at least. It appears the problem is somehow
grub related. The wild goose chase continues but due to the fact
Windows boots and installs using EFI the question still remains "How to
install or boot Ubuntu using EFI mode on an EFI 2.1 machine?"

[Bug 1225478] Re: package grub-efi-amd64 2.00-18ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-09-23 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Regardless of the boot time errors after installing 13.10 then after using
boot-repair and updating and rebooting then updating again has now given a
usable install.
It would appear debugging has been taken care of automatically.
Still have not worked out how to get grub the boot manager to see and use the
vmlinuz.efi files on liveDVD at install time which am sure will prevent the
error/bug reported here. What i am trying to achieve is an efi install of
Ubuntu. What is happening that due to the described inability of Ubuntu to see
/casper/vmlinuz.efi files when booting using EFI the workaround of installing
BIOS mode then installing grub-efi to get Ubuntu booting using EFI as well as
telling installer to use existing ESP on sda most likely caused the fake
initctl thing to happen!?.

The outcome of "sudo sh -x /usr/sbin/grub-install" gave more than one
page output and tried saving output as .txt and .log file but the only
output there in were the bootloaders as listed by efibootmgr.
Ultimately returned no errors in terminal.

Latest bios for this hardware is F8a which is available to public.
Gigabyte Global Technical Service provided me with F8c firmware which
allows more predictable access to BIOS settings. Again rodsbooks
provides excellent advice regarding Ubuntu creating a FAT16 ESP when
installer booting EFI mode see http://www.rodsbooks.com/gb-hybrid-efi/
which is evidence it is possible to boot Ubuntu installer using EFI on
very similar hardware. Gigabyte refuse to acknowledge problem of
booting non Windows installation media using EFI mode.

2013-09-20 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Would like to update with some more observations; firstly with reference to
original bug description regarding the workaround to get Ubuntu booting using
EFI mode on this hardware: Boot-Repairs recommended fix wants to apply "rename
bootloader" and after going for reinstalltion of Ubuntu using 13.04 amd desktop
.iso made the conscious decision not to apply this which gives a seperate
Ubuntu directory in ESP and boots just fine! This was attempted after reading
http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/bootrepair.html which mentions a few
problems relating to this situation of being unable to install using EFI mode.
Perhaps Rod Smith is the man to ask about how to get Ubuntu installing EFI mode
on this hardware!? His webpages are a very reliable source of information
regarding all things U/EFI!
Secondly regards to my last comment regarding 13.10 amd64 installer detecting
mac partition table when windows installed to GPT may be to do with DVD using
mac partition table!?

2013-09-14 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Attached a copy of terminal commands and outputs that Boot-Repair requested to
be entered during the application of repair in order to upgrade BIOS boot to
EFI mode booting of Ubuntu.
As an observation previous attempts at using Boot-Repair to fix EFI mode boot
of Ubuntu were alot more less successful. I suspect this was due to not
actually rebooting Ubuntu in BIOS mode after installing BIOS mode to update the
necessary files; "Warning: Fake initctl called: Doing nothing" and other
troubles getting things to boot due to trying to install grub to existing ESP
when booted using BIOS mode- most likely due to missing modules; packages and
or dependencies!

[Bug 1225478] [NEW] package grub-efi-amd64 2.00-18ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-09-14 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Public bug reported:

Listed under "I don't know" due to the many suspected causes of Ubuntu
installer failing to install grub to an existing EFI partition at install.
This is due to Ubuntu installation media failing to boot using EFI mode and
have to boot using BIOS mode to get Ubuntu installer running. Having to rely on
the work around of booting in BIOS mode for installation and using Boot-Repair
to try and fix EFI mode boot of Ubuntu. One suspect contributing to this is
hardcoding of firmware however have just booted using EFI mode after running
Boot-Repair making sure the "Rename EFI entries" is NOT selected.
Personally suspect grub install issues are an accumalation of several
defficiencies in Ubuntu installer rather than being a grub bug.
Have attached BIS for consideration.
Due to observing Boot-Repair being run at least two thiousand times in less
than two hours today may be indicative there is indeed many deficciencies in
Ubuntu installer.

On GA A75 UD4H;
Using Saucy image to go for install with EFI off detects a mac partiton table!
Using Raring image to go for install putting boot loader to existing ESP
installed grub.efi.signed bootloader!
This is more indicative of boot manager and boot loader bugs and/or

So other than recommending trying mac.iso; anybody got other advice?
What other information could be of any use to get the ball rolling on getting

Surely the outcome of ls /casper confirms vmlinuz.efi files is on .iso. The
question is why can't Grub the boot manager see vmlinuz.efi files?

[Bug 1053897] Re: kernel does not boot without noefi on commandline

2013-08-22 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Ubuntu flavours <=12.04.1 may cause trouble regarding making a 16bit; or
wanting to use a 16bit ESP whereas firmwares are looking for 32bit ESP= no
worky!? The workaround is to allow installer to run as it wants to but be sure
to copy ESP save in another location then delete 16bit ESP and remake 32bit ESP
replacing the files from 16bit ESP before rebooting trying to use U/EFI.
source http://www.rodsbooks.com/gb-hybrid-efi/
"A FAT-16 ESP, on the other hand, seems problematic. Ubuntu 11.04 (and 11.10)
in EFI mode creates a dinky FAT-16 ESP, and after my test install of Ubuntu
11.04, the board hung on reboot until I reworked the ESP as FAT-32. Thus, if
you plan to install Ubuntu, or any other OS that creates a FAT-16 ESP, be
prepared to fix it, preferably before the system reboots!"
"rodsbooks" is an absolutely indispensible source of all things factual
regarding U/EFI which demystifies and disproves many myths as well as
misinformation regarding this subject.

Again these type of idiosyncrasies appear to be vendor specific.

[Bug 1053897] Re: kernel does not boot without noefi on commandline

2013-08-22 Thread Shaun Turnbull
On different hardware GA A75 UD4H this is a very similar issue
regarding using EFI to install Ubuntu. Have tried from 11.04 and up to
13.04 all with same result ie does not run installer in EFI mode,
noefi does not work for me but running installer using BIOS/legacy mode
does work then installing grub-efi gets Ubuntu booting using EFI mode.
My bug report
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1213119) is still
unfinished and not confirmed as bug as of yet. There are many similar
bugs to this one and mine. My own research is indicating this type of
problem is more and more likely to be vendor hard coding of firmware.
This is unproven theory and currently stands as speculation. Just seems
many vendors creating very similar issues regarding the installation of
Ubuntu using U/EFI and that is with or without Secure Boot.

PC Desktop and Ubuntu Mac Desktop. The .iso that was downloaded is named
ubuntu-13.04-amd64.iso and definetely not ubuntu-13.04-amd64+mac.iso.
Additionaly have confirmed that using sha256sum and sha256sum.gpg (for Desktop
PC) to verify downloaded .iso and burned disc. ref:Posts #18 and #20.

In post #17 have provided evidence this (ref apple1 and apple2) is applicable
to other distrubitions on this hardware. I more than suspect this is due to
firmware hardcoding but is possibly some kind of bug (grub).

GA A75 UD4H is an amd64 platform which uses chipset A75 and AMD socket
FM1. It is not a Mac.

ls -l at grub prompt confirms missing files regarding /boot/grub/x86_64-efi
then lists hd0 partitions and then also lists:

[Bug 1213119] Re: "You need to load the kernel first" when trying select any option from grub list when using EFI

2013-08-21 Thread Shaun Turnbull
I definitely downloaded amd64 .iso.
uname -a from live session (booted in BIOS mode) gives Linux ubuntu
3.8.0-19-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 17 18:16:28 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux Using checksums for amd64 .iso to verify download and burnt
DVD! 100% positive using amd64 .iso

Do not have rEFInd installed as Fedora 19 installed using LVM which used grub
in non-efi mode - even when EFI was on. Fedora has taken all EFI bootloaders
and put them in grub non-EFI!
Fedora 18 amd 64 .iso could not install with EFI on but rEFInd saw apple
installer- common denominator =GRUB and system latest firmware!

[Bug 1213119] Re: "You need to load the kernel first" when trying select any option from grub list when using EFI

2013-08-20 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Reconsidering the situation here it should be rementioned that this problem of
not being able to boot any kernels from liveDVD could be directly related to
very poor EFI implementation as well as vendor hard coding. Have considered
trying to run FirmWareTestSuite set of tools to try and get some accurate
information regarding what my firmware is capable of or not. Not sure if these
tools can be used on a system with no working Ubuntu. (did have EFI booting
Ubuntu but she is broken and really struggling to recover from mountall errors)
.
Considering this could be a or multiple Ubiquity grub possibly even shim bug
or firmware hardcoding problem - Should i change this bug to a question?

[Bug 1213119] Re: "You need to load the kernel first" when trying select any option from grub list when using EFI

2013-08-19 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Sorry for slow response; keep on getting lost here in the depths of
Launchpad. I posted a picture to another Ask Ubuntu question.
http://askubuntu.com/q/298819 and trying more recently gives similar
results with main difference being cd0,apple1 and cd0,apple2 are found.
I will see about borrowing a camera to get a better representation of
what is actually happening currently. The only thing that i have done
that may have had any influence on this is installing rEFInd (which
installs its own efi iso.9660 drivers) and burnt a new disc (due to cat
taking a walk on my disc when it was left lying about). The same .iso
was used so this should not be relevant. checksums have been checked on
.iso and veryified disk when burning. This is all using 13.04 Desktop
amd64.iso.

Getting to the black grub screen indicates liveDVD has booted EFI mode
but iIt is when a kernel is selected i get the "can not read file" or cd
and "you need to load the kernel first" errors.

Using lsefisystab also confirms system is booting live DVD EFI mode.
Will do this again and try to report actual outcome.

[Bug 1025467] Re: sysrq is now completely disabled, it would be nice to maintain the ability to reboot etc

2013-08-19 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Apologies once again. Now understand S U B are only sysrq commands
allowed by default by the use of bitmask 176 which for it is easy to
change or adapt relevant settings to any other commands as needed or
desired. This for me is applicable to 12.10 and 13.04 desktop amd64.
Suprisingly very little information regarding sysrq in Official Ubuntu
Documentation. Have posted an answer with much useful information
regarding the use and configuration of sysrq in the link posted in last
comment. The majority of the answer is copied from another ditrubitions
wiki which is based on the Linux Kernel Documentation regarding sysrq.
The conclusion to the answer in linked Ask Ubuntu question above is to
leave the default settings as is unless there is obvious need to do
otherwise. Just use SUB instead of RSEIUB! Tryng sysrq commands in tty
will give text output which helps understand and prove there never was a
complete disabling of sysrq. Have taken back my affected vote as a
little research has proven i am unaffected. Another example of how Ask
Ubuntu is a brilliant learning tool and just one of the many brilliant
resources available through using Ubuntu! Links provided by mniess in
other answer to the same question are key in understanding and
appreciating why the need for different bitmask has come about and this
is not a new concept.

If sysrq is disabled by default and users are saying it works for them
(Ask Ubuntu) ie http://askubuntu.com/questions/53263/shut-down-computer-

disablement of sysrq is applied by default? ie If user did not set sysrq

2013-08-18 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Booting Ubuntu Desktop amd64 liveDVD (3.8.0-19-generic) in BIOS mode
searching "computer" using file manager to find sysreq settings is now
found in /etc/systl.d and named 10-magic-sysrq.conf. Looking in my
Ubuntu partitionb which was last bootable using 3.8.0.28 kernel; also
confirms sysrq as being disabled by default Can not find why this has
been disabled as default so would like to take opportunity to ask; Why
is sysrq disabled as default on liveDVD?

Reading the original bug report refers to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/194676 confirms
there may be secuity issues related to this. Is it possible to ask for
some reasoning to this? I thought linux had reputation of being secure
and virus free!?

Is not a better idea to have sysrq enabled to allow the well known and
used RSEIUB(O) if sytem hangs or freezes? At least providing the
protection of minimising having to recover sytem files or data due to
corrupting hard drive and the need for fsck to kick in or be started
manually from recovery.?

Am asking these questions after watching 17 08 2013 episode of the BBC
programme
["Click"](http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0392vqy/Click_17_08_2013/)
and the "cyberwarfare" article really caught my attention. FAWC

>=UEFI 2.3.1 is the specification demanded by Windows 8 for Secure Boot
purposes. I still think Ubuntu should still be able to install on a non
secure boot capable system using EFI. There appears to be no other
option than >=2.3.1 UEFI or BIOS when trying to install Ubuntu EFI mode.
This document goes some way to confirm this

[Bug 1213119] Re: "You need to load the kernel first" when trying select any option from grub list when using EFI

2013-08-17 Thread Shaun Turnbull
The location is of course /cdrom/boot/grub/grub.cfg. Other research may
confirm this is a firmware issue. The firmware version is EFI 1.1 rev 2 which
rEFInd sees as UEFI 2.1. Due to not being able to boot any grub options from
grub list (grub boot manager loads but grub bootloaders will not boot) when
booted using EFI mode the grub.cfg is when booted using Non-EFI mode. Which is
BIOS on this system due to not having CSM as this is an emulated EFI
layer!(opposite of CSM which is full UEFI with emulated BIOS)
Canonical BIOS/UEFI Requirement documentation explains Ubuntu is geared to use
UEFI 2.3.1 as described in the first paragraph of section 9 in this [Canonical
Document]( http://hwe.ubuntu.com/docs/ubuntu-bios-uefi-requirements.pdf)

Possible kernel upgrade from 3.8.0.28 to 3.8.0.30 has caused mountall
error leading to maintenance shell. Breaking Raring.

[Bug 1213119] [NEW] "You need to load the kernel first" when trying select any option from grub list when using EFI

2013-08-16 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Public bug reported:

This affects Precise, Quantal and Raring on ga a75 ud4h hardware. This is not
a Secure Boot capable system .
Trying to install using EFI mode when Windows installed using GPT already.
EFI has to be switched off to allow installer or live session to run. Both
default and fallback installers not working when EFI is on. No options from
grub list boot - get "can not read cd0/files" and "You need to load the kernel
first" errors.

Have asked this http://askubuntu.com/q/208405/102029 question and tried
to list some observations at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2149013.

After installing using the workaround of switching EFI off and then
creating grub_bios partition to allow installtion bios mode. Then
installing of grub-efi needs other modification to existing boot loader
for Ubuntu to boot. This is due to firmware hardcoding by vendors.
Boot-Repair fixes things to get going but through time system
deteriorates and becomes unrecoverable or bootable due to mountall
errors.

[Bug 1072378] Re: [Asus Eee PC 1015BXO] Ubuntu 12.10 EFI support is not ready

Taking Secure Boot out of equation indicates this is almost certainly a
grub 2 deficiency or bug

[Bug 1072378] Re: [Asus Eee PC 1015BXO] Ubuntu 12.10 EFI support is not ready

2013-08-16 Thread Shaun Turnbull
This affects precise, quantal , and raring. Have not tried saucy yet.
Is there a way to confirm the first stage installer are capable of running on
an EFI system that is not secure boot capable? Is shim required on non
SecureBoot system?

I suspect if shim/ first stage installer are not able to run using .efi
image and are only looking for signed.efi criteria not finding either so
should drop to legacy/bios installer automatically but fall back
installer is not running either. is only speculation because do not know
the intended meaning of first and second stage installer-
ref:http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/

ga a75 ud4h mobo being used. When booting precise, quantal or raring with EFI on
get to situation as described http://askubuntu.com/q/208405/102029 and several
other related questions. Searching ask ubuntu
http://askubuntu.com/search?q=need+to+load+kernel+first+ confirms a recnt
increase in these queries on differing hardware so this is almost a certain bug.

Doing ls -l after dropping to command prompt when getting UEFI grub
screen ref
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Identifying_if_the_computer_boots_the_HDD_in_EFI_mode
confirms cd0,apple1 and cd0apple2 images are detected and might go some
way to explaining why they are not usable on an amd 64 platform.
running lsefisystab here also indicates EFI ver 1.1. rev 2 rEFInd sees
this firmware as UEFI 2.1 which goes to completely confirm this is not
Secure Boot capable system.

Confirm Christopher M. Penalver's workaround does work but i do not see
this as afull solution due to the lack of being to use efibootmgr when
booting live session- which has to be with EFI off due to installer bug.
No efi = no efibootmgr. If dual booting with windows using this
workaround will mean having to simply create grub_bios partition,
install grub-efi and possibly rename windows bootfmgr to trick firmware
to booting grub-efi. Using boot-repair seems to be the accepted and
easiest way of doing this but has hugely varying success rates.

[Bug 993164] Re: error file not found you need to load the kernel first failed to boot both default and fallback entries

2013-08-15 Thread Shaun Turnbull
This error is reproducable on my hardware >=12.04.2 with EFI mode on.
Am posting this from 13.04 amd 64 desktop live session because of this
error and others possibly associated with it. Using ga a75 ud4h mobo
with latest firmware which uses EFI 1.1 rev 2 specification firmware.
rEFInd sees this as ver UEFI 2.1. Using msinfo32 and windows upgrade
assistant confirm this firmware/hardware is not Secure Boot capable.

Searching Ask Ubuntu this bug may have regressed/resurfaced since
12.04.2/12.10.
One similar question there http://askubuntu.com/q/206950/102029 links to this
wiki http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ which i
have found helpful in getting confidence to post my first bug comment here.
The article talks of first stage and second stage boot loaders as well as shim.
Realise shim is Secure Boot related so is not the issue on this hardware but
do not understand first stage and second stage boot loaders.
Do know rEFInd sees BIOS/legacy bootloaders on media as "fallback loaders". I
am guessing this is second stage bootloader. Which means if first stage loader
is the signed.efi image then there is no usable .efi image to use on my
hardware.
How to EFI install Ubuntu on a system that is EFI capable but is not Secure
Boot capable?
Understand 11.04 11.10 want to make 16bit EFI partition if installing to a
completely unallocated space drive which would mean fixing before trying to
boot to - source http://www.rodsbooks.com/gb-hybrid-efi/ which is a different
story.

I can not boot any Ubuntu installer using EFI mode on this hardware. I asked
this http://askubuntu.com/questions/208405/how-to-efi-install-ubuntu which
links to thread over on Ubuntu Forums to try and find a working solution or a
conclusion that explains why not!
13.04 installed using legacy settings although EFI was on which indicates the
expected sequence described in
http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ However i
can not replicate this and have never booted any Ubuntu installer using EFI
mode on this hardware.

[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2013-04-25 Thread Shaun Turnbull
Since installing 12.10 have noticed that a warning box indicates a process is
not shutting down as quickly as it should be ref signon-ui at shutdown time.
This could be related to the use of Ubuntu One sign in with relation to the
Backup app. If Backup is closed from desktop session an Ubuntu One sign in box
appears.
After noticing the hidden goutputstream files and doing a websearch then
looking here it appears there is no definite cause to this happening. Reading
comment #33 did motivate me to note my own observations but do not have
programming experience to help identify what is the actual cause of the
goutputstream files in home folder. Ref
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/984785/comments/33 Have
noticed these hidden files but did not see them as problem until reading some
of the comments here referring to this possibly being a security issue.
