I seem to have the same problem on Gutsy. With ~/.fonts.conf present I

Thunderbird, Firefox, & GIMP GUI are blurry.

[Bug 174965] /sys/slab directory crashes applications

2007-12-08 Thread Simon Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

Reading and listing the files in /sys/slab can cause applications to
crash. The command "find /sys/slab | xargs cat" works until cat
segfaults. The music program LMMS scans the root directory and /sys/slab
at startup and crashes too. Viewing the /sys/slab in Krusader, crashes
it too.

The problam appears to be the one discussed in this thread:
http://ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0709.2/1886.html

Workaround: Doing a "chmod a-x /sys/slab" is enough to hide the
directory so that LMMS can startup and run normally.

[Bug 151684] Re: Camera Detection Issues

2007-10-14 Thread Simon Edwards
I recently encountered this problem too on my Acer Aspire 5610 laptop
with built in camera. (read: very common mid-range laptop). For me it
loop through USB addresses up to 127 and then started again at 2 during
boot. This stopped the boot process in its tracks(!). Rebooting in safe
mode didn't help either. I worked around the problem by booting with a
different kernal and then adding gspca to the blacklist.

Looking at lsusb, I'm guessing that the webcam is:

[Bug 103488] Re: the ixf86misc module is provided twice

2007-05-03 Thread Simon Edwards
Moving some of these common modules out of guidance and into something
that can be shared, is on my TODO list.

In the meantime, it would be a (very) good idea to package
displayconfig-gtk's ixf86misc.so so that is is placed under /usr/lib
/python-support/displayconfig-gtk/python2.5/. This will help avoid any
confusing 'import' accidents with kde-guidance picking up the wrong
version of ixf86misc.so. We've got a couple of weird module import bugs
listed for kde-guidance which we are having trouble figuring out.

[Bug 91545] Re: MASTER [apport] displayconfig-restore.py crashed with SIGSEGV in XRRGetScreenInfo()

2007-04-30 Thread Simon Edwards
Looking at all of these crash reports I'm getting the feeling that the
problem has to do with guidance not handling things when the xrandr X
extension is not available. In the past, calling XRRGetScreenInfo()
would just return null if the extensions was not available, maybe this
behaviour has been changed. Maybe an explicit check for the presence of
of xrandr is required.

complete xset reports wrong values. I've checked that displayconfig-

some other process is changing the dpms settings during login. I'll have
to keep looking...

[Bug 62223] Re: Monitor & Display, User Management, Disk & Filesystems - All Broken

2006-10-22 Thread Simon Edwards
Frode and I have tracked down the problem on IRC to an old package
called "python2.4-iconvcodec". This package is no longer in the
repository. Having it installed causes Python's "site" module to fail
when Python is embedded in another applications, such as kde-system-
settings or kcmshell. The solution is to remove this package.
