this for "Smaller"

[Bug 218931] [NEW] liferea can't open epiphany browser when click on a news

2008-04-17 Thread Simone Malacarne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: liferea

i'm using hardy 64bit (upgrade from gutsy) (Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04)

I set Epiphany as default browser in gnome. Liferea is set to use gnome
defaul browser.

When i try to open a post in a feed in external browser (double click on it)
epiphany is not started. In Gutsy all work perfectly.
If Epiphany is already started (by me clicking on Epi icon) then work correctly
and liferea open a new tab with the correct page.

If i set firefox as defaul browser liferea works correctly and open it.
If i try to start liferea-bin directly in shell problem is resolved.
Liferea developers tell me this can be related to LD_LIBRARY_PATH
When i use this in shell:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9b5 epiphany
ephy segfault whereas epiphany work fine normally

Tried 0.7 in Foresight, it works very well and "out of the box" with my
GPRS/UMTS connection.
Due to the lots of bugs still afflicting 0.6.6, shouldn't be a bad idea to
include nm-0.7 in hardy and to remove ifupdown.

[Bug 191889] Re: Firefox's new "Offline Mode" feature cannot properly detect when there is a valid network available for use in many circumstances

2008-04-06 Thread Simone Tolotti
The bug title should be changed 'cause it's not related to Firefox.
I've seen that the bug is still in "incomplete" status, what kind of info the
developers needs?
Clearly the problem is that NetworkManager doesn't take care of connected
interfaces.
If you have a "wired" card (ethernet) you should disable the "roaming mode" for
it and enable static IP or DHCP.
After this NM think that the card is connected and stays online.
Otherwise if you keep wired connection in roaming mode you can manage other
interfaces (ppp0 in my case) but even if connected NM stays in offline mode due
to the fact that the wired one is offline.

@jarda: Your "trick" only works in KDE and not for all.

Happening again on hardy 0.3.1 lmms package, no .desktop file in it.

[Bug 191889] Re: Firefox's new "Offline Mode" feature cannot properly detect when there is a valid network available for use in many circumstances

2008-03-28 Thread Simone Tolotti
Please mark this as confirmed and at a higher priority 'cause it's a blocker
for everyone who has a dial-up or a "not always-on" connection.
Until NM and nm-applet doesn't take care of connected interfaces other than eth
or wlan it's a big problem.

[Bug 191889] Re: Firefox's new "Offline Mode" feature cannot properly detect when there is a valid network available for use in many circumstances

2008-03-28 Thread Simone Tolotti
I've found how to bypass the offline issue.
Configure the wired connection disabling "roaming mode" and select static IP,
you could use IP adress like 192.168.0.1 and netmask 255.255.255.0.
After reboot NM is switched to online and you can use all the applications that
take care of nm status (FF-3,pidgin,evolution, etc.).
Unfortunately after disabling roaming mode the connect/disconnect menu items in
nm-applet disappears.
You could manage your dialup connection (if you have one) with "sudo pon ppp0"
and "sudo poff".

[Bug 208332] [NEW] [Hardy] network manager applet unable to manage dial-up connections

2008-03-28 Thread Simone Tolotti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I own a GPRS/UMTS usb modem that works pretty well on Ubuntu. I'm actually
trying to manage this connection trough Network Manager and nm-applet.
First I've configured a dial-up interface with gprs type and left wired
connection in roaming mode.
I can successfully connect with the usb modem using "connect ppp0" menu entry
in nm-applet.
Unfortunately nm-applet is still in offline mode even though ppp0 is connected
and I can't use apps like pidgin or evolution.
So I've tried to switch the wired connection to normal mode and configured it
with static IP; this succesfully switched nm-applet to online.
However I can't manage the ppp0 interface trough nm-applet because the
"connect/disconnect ppp0" menu entries are disappeared. :-(

I've bypassed the problem using "pon ppp0" and "poff" to
connect/disconnect ppp0.

[Bug 198800] [NEW] [hardy] tracker-applet should not open new windows

2008-03-05 Thread Simone Tolotti
Public bug reported:

Everytime i I click on the tray icon a new search window is opened.
I think it could be more useful to minimize the current search window when

I don't see any benefit to have several search windows.

[Bug 38512] Re: Window close should close, not quit

2008-03-01 Thread Simone Tolotti
I'm impressed by the blindness of rhythmbox developers.
It's about 1 year that it's been discussed.
Don't you think that this worth an option to choose if you want to close or
minimize to tray, when you click window's close button?
I think this should be true for every app that has a reason to live in the
background.
In the meantime I've now learned to click on the tray icon to minimize
rhythmbox...

[Bug 196157] [NEW] [hardy] totem-xine dvb playback no channels list

2008-02-27 Thread Simone Tolotti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-xine

I have a working DVB-S card (works well with kaffeine and xine).
I have channels.conf in ~/.xine
I run Totem (totem-xine) and select "Watch TV on 'DVB Adapter 0'", totem
crashes!

I had success running: totem-xine dvb://channelname
In this case playback is good.

I've installed totem-dbg and tried to run totem-xine --debug, output
attached.

I've also reported a playback bug for gstreamer backend, so I can't play dvb

[Bug 196152] [NEW] [hardy] totem-gstreamer DVB jerky playback

2008-02-27 Thread Simone Tolotti

I have a working DVB-S card (works well with kaffeine and xine).
I have dvb-channels.conf in ~/.gstreamer-0.10

loaded in playlist box.
I select a FTA (free to air) channel and wait...
After few seconds the playback starts but is jerky (about 2 secs between each
frame) and no audio.

Running totem-xine (channels.conf in ~/.xine ) instead crashes when trying to
load channels list.
I had success running: totem-xine dvb://channelname

[Bug 132741] Re: Tracker should not be enabled by default until it doesn't clobber everything

2008-02-19 Thread Simone Tolotti
UP!
I'm testing Tracker again on Hardy alpha.
I have about 100GB of data in my home... mixed videos, images, music and text
files.
I'm not a developer and I have disabled indexing of ~/Downloads/SRC that is the
folder where I keep sofware sources.
I've also removed .cache/tracker before starting indexing.
On first run tracker cpu usage is about 25% and sometimes reaches 50%
(core2duo 1.8Ghz) and obviously slowed down my system.
I wonder how an app working this way coul be called "ready for everyday
usage"...

It's since tracker was added to feisty repo that many people have this kind of
problems...
Do you still think they could be fixed or it's time to look for an alternative?
I think it's hard for non-geek users to disable or remove tracker so don't
enable it by default (until these issues are fixed) or use Beagle instead!

Subscribed.

Same here for Italian language. (I think that italian stemming is not well
done...).
I also have a lot of english docs in my home 70-80%, so it is not very useful
to use italian stemming for them.

[Bug 183811] Re: Perl 5.8.7-10ubuntu1.1 breaks apt-cacher and possibly other software

2008-01-18 Thread Simone Lazzaris
I must apologize: the problem was related to a manually-installed
package, which installed a different version of Errno.pm under
/usr/LOCAL/share/perl/5.8.7 (capital letters added for emphasis, they
are lowercase in the filesystem) which override Errno.pm installed from
the pakages under /usr/lib/perl/5.8.7

Removing (renaming) the offending file

[Bug 160646] Re: tracker pegs cpu and prevents me from getting work done

2008-01-01 Thread Simone Tolotti
I can confirm this... Trackerd is a pain... It uses 50% of my cpu when indexing
(I have a core2duo 6300 with 2Gb ram!!!)
I've tested it on Hardy too. sometimes it seems stuck indexing something and
raises 50-60% of cpu usage slowing down the entire system.

I'm actually using Beagle on Gutsy and I'm happy with it 'cause it stops
indexing any time I move the mouse pointer or I press a button on the
keyboard.

Trackerd seems to ignore if the user is doing something or not, this is
very bad!

[Bug 174159] Re: ubuntu gutsy freeze with firefox 2.0.0.11 open

2007-12-06 Thread simone
The problem is still present but the crashes are less frequent. This
morning the crash happened with firefox as the only running program. I
have installed opera as web browser to see if the problem presents also
with this (hence meaning a possibile problem in the plugins). If opera
work fine I'll come back to firefox and I'll disable the desktop effect
(incompatibility among compiz-fusion and firefox 2.0.0.11?).

[Bug 174159] Re: ubuntu gutsy freeze with firefox 2.0.0.11 open

2007-12-05 Thread simone
As you suggested I deleted the firefox profile. Now I'm waiting to see if the
problem is still present. As at this moment firefox crashed two times when I
was trying to watch a trailer from apple quicktime site: I first see a messagge
"no video" at then after a while firefox crashed, but I don't think this
problem is related to the previous (I can look at the trailers from the movie
official web site).
Now I'm running with normal desktop effects enabled.

No I didn't tried, but if you think it's worth I'll do, but why? Among
other stuff such as the bookmarks this will delete all the configuration
files.

[Bug 174159] ubuntu gutsy freeze with firefox 2.0.0.11 open

2007-12-05 Thread simone
Public bug reported:

Since I updated to firefox 2.0.0.10 and today to firefox 2.0.0.11 I'm
experiencing random hard freezing on gutsy. The only way to get the system
working is to press the reset button. Currently I have enabled some desktop
effects. Initially I tought the problem may be in the flash player since at the
beginning I had this problem while surfing web pages with flash effects but
actually the problem is getting worser: My system freeze at random with firefox
open but minimized at with non flash web pages (such as pubmed-medline). If you
need more information let me known (but tell me what file I should look out).
regards

[Bug 173208] program exits following Java Exception

2007-12-01 Thread Simone F.
Public bug reported:

It actually happens in Gutsy with pdftk's latest deb build, 1.40-2ubuntu3
(depending on newest gcj1-8 libraries).
If you install it then run it with something on the command line, e.g. 'pdftk
file1.pdf file2.pdf output file1-2.pdf' it will output a list of Java
Exceptions originating from a MD5 function not found. I could post it
eventually, but you can try and see it for yourself.

This happens, as I found out, only since the version shipped with Gutsy.
Instead the build 1.40-2 from Feisty which depends on ligcj7-0 ( all dep: libc6
(>= 2.5-0ubuntu1), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.1-17ubuntu1), libgcj7-0 (>= 4.1.1-12),
libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-17ubuntu1) ), works flawlessly.
