[Bug 61407] Re: Dell Inspiron 510m - tasks not stopping on Hibernate
I'm occasionally experiencing this problem with my ThinkPad X60s: Trying to suspend fails with the message "stopping tasks timed out after 20 seconds", then it tries to resume, but the display isn't turned on. I know there's a seperate bug reported about the display not being turned on when resuming, related to s3_bios support, but when suspending succeeds, resuming will work properly as well. Only when it fails to suspend will the display stay turned off. So I believe that fixing suspend will automatically fix resume, at least on my laptop. (I also reported this to Bug #70602 - not sure if/how it might be related to this issue!) -- Dell Inspiron 510m - tasks not stopping on Hibernate https://launchpad.net/bugs/61407 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 70602] Re: Dual-core Thinkpad fails to suspend with cpu governor active
After further investigation, I believe my problem is related to Bug #61407 - I always got the message "stopping tasks timed out after 20 seconds", then the ThinkPad tries to resume, but the laptop display stays off. Reconnecting to the docking station enables the external display which is connected to it. Turning on the laptop display on resume does work when suspending succeeds, though, it only fails when suspending itself fails. Should this bug perhaps be marked as a duplicate of Bug #61407 - or is the cpufreq problem really a seperate issue? -- Dual-core Thinkpad fails to suspend with cpu governor active https://launchpad.net/bugs/70602 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 70602] Re: Dual-core Thinkpad fails to suspend with cpu governor active
After extended testing, I did experience a few lockups even with this work-around, so I'm no longer sure if it really works or if it's all that's needed. Here's what I found out so far: Instead of suspending properly, my ThinkPad is trying to resume immediately after the suspend, but fails to come back on. The real problem is not that it doesn't resume properly, but that it doesn't suspend properly, I believe. This is evident in the syslog: When freezing the CPU, right after the syslog entry "CPU1 is down", it says "Stopping tasks:" and displays a progress bar out of equals signs (=). When suspend works properly, the progress bar is finished with a pipe symbol (|). When suspend fails, the progress bar is left unfinished (=). If it doesn't finish stopping all tasks, it says "Restarting tasks...<6> Strange, kseriod not stopped", followed by lots of "Strange, XXX not stopped", then "Thawing cpus ..." I'll investigate further, but so far this looks like some kind of process not being terminated and thus preventing a proper suspend - which will in turn block a successful resume afterwards. I have to reset the notebook by keeping the power button pressed down. It doesn't happen very often, maybe once in twenty suspend attempts, but it's still a problem. I welcome any comments and suggestions since this is the only major problem I have with Ubuntu running on my ThinkPad X60s - thanks! -- Dual-core Thinkpad fails to suspend with cpu governor active https://launchpad.net/bugs/70602 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 46853] Re: grub install fails on EFI Intel Macs
I noticed the Debian "refit" package is now in feisty's Universe repository. Integrating it into ubiquity shouldn't be too hard. After ubiquity has finished modyfing the partition scheme, all it needs to do is sync the MBR to the GPT by calling gptsync on the drive. It's also important to make sure the boot partition is set to type Linux (0x83). Shouldn't be much of a problem to implement this. Anyone working on this yet? 2006/11/30, Michael R. Head <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Any progress for feisty? > > Can ubiquity be modified to detect the need to sync the MBR to the GPT? > > -- > grub install fails on EFI Intel Macs > https://launchpad.net/bugs/46853 > -- grub install fails on EFI Intel Macs https://launchpad.net/bugs/46853 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 46853] Re: grub install fails on EFI Intel Macs
As of Edgy and the latest Apple firmware upgrades and Bootcamp updates, there's only one problem left which causes the GRUB installation to fail: Gparted, which is integrated into Ubiquity, doesn't sync MBR and GPT partition schemes after partitioning. At the beginning of the installation process, parted repartitions the drive, causing the GRUB installation at the end to fail! In addition to that, the boot partition type must be Linux (83). The workaround is manually sync'ing MBR and GPT after the repartitioning but before the attempted GRUB install. To do so, I download and install Debian's rEFIt package (http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/refit) on the live CD before starting the installation. Then, during "Copying files..." I have enough time to sync MBR and GPT and fix the boot partition type. Until an EFI-aware GRUB installation is possible, it would be best if Ubiquity would sync MBR and GPT and ensure the proper boot partition type is set. For more details how to ensure a successful installation with GRUB, take a look at my HOWTO here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MacBook -- grub install fails on EFI Intel Macs https://launchpad.net/bugs/46853 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes in cryptsetup
Marc: "and while entering the passphrase there are no asterisks shown. [...] For John Doe user it might be good if he sees those while typing the passphrase. Somewhat cosmetic, but for the records." I'd rather not see asterisks when entering my passphrase because once an attacker knows how many characters are within the passphrase, the passphrase becomes a lot weaker and easier to crack. Instead of brute- forcing an unknown number of characters, one would only need to brute- force a known number of characters, drastically reducing the number of possibilities. For a regular password, this might not be of such concern, but a high-security passphrase should be kept as secure as possible. When entering the password in the console, it's not displayed, so I think when entering it at boot-up time it shouldn't be shown, either. Or even better, making it an option, perhaps set in /etc/default/cryptsetup or some such place, so asterisks can be on by default for John Doe and people concerned with higher security can turn it off. -- Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes in cryptsetup https://launchpad.net/bugs/62751 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 69061] MacBook keymap broken
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xkb-data Support for the MacBook keyboard got worse from Dapper to Edgy - while I'm using a German keyboard, it probably affects other keyboard setups as well: With Edgy, the Tilde and Less/Greater keys were swapped. With Edgy, the function keys F1-F10 have been swapped with fn+F1-F10. F11 and F12 are not affected. In addition to that, custom reconfiguration isn't working as it used to, both /etc/console-tools/remap (to reconfigure the console keymap) and /etc/X11/Xmodmap (to reconfigure the X keymap) don't work properly anymore. Console-tools has been replaced by console-setup which doesn't support remapping, instead it loads an "xkb" keymap, just like X does. And the global "Xmodmap" doesn't affect users anymore, probably because it is overridden by the "xkb" keymap in a later stage. That's why I'm filing this bug with "xkb-data" - if a proper xkb keymap now is the only supported way of keyboard configuration, a working MacBook keymap should be provided. (The included keymaps only work with iMac or PowerBook, not the new MacBooks!) I also noticed my MacBook (Black) getting very hot (much hotter than in OS X). I recently applied a firmware update which claimed to improve fan behavior, but so far I didn't notice any difference. The directories /proc/acpi/fan/ and /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/ are both empty - so Ubuntu's power management hasn't discovered the fan and cooling systems! I'm not sure if the MacBook firmware itself can and will prevent serious overheating. If it doesn't, couldn't that cause permanent damage to the device? In that case, this bug should be addressed with higher priority, it certainly is of highest priority to MacBook users who care for the safety of their pricy MacBooks! [Bug 57104] Re: How to set volume.ignore for encrypted partitions?
Hi Hadmut, I encountered the same problem: My root partition is encrypted but gnome-volume-manager asks me for my passphrase although it's already mounted as my root filesystem! Besides being annoying, if I do provide the password, the dialog freezes. The problem is that HAL detects the encrypted partition without realizing it's already mounted. The solution is for HAL to ignore the encrypted partition in this case. I've attached a patch which fixes the bug by ignoring an encrypted volume unless it's hotpluggable or removable! Download it to your Desktop and execute the following command: cd /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor && sudo patch -p1 <~/Desktop/15 -storage-luks.fdi.diff This fix should be integrated into Ubuntu since it's quite an annoyance for users of encrypted partitions. It could be improved by checking if the device is really mounted. My patch only checks if it's removable or hotpluggable. It's simple and does work, though. (The added lines of code have been copied from /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20 -storage-methods.fdi which handles a similar case!) Hope this helps, -- Stefan D. Since it runs after networking is brought up (which, thanks to pppoeconf, already has activated the ppp connection), it discards the (until then valid) /etc/resolv.conf. We end up with an established ppp connection but without DNS servers to resolve domain names. The work-around would be to disconnect (sudo poff) and reconnect (pon), but a real fix is changing the boot order back to how it was set up under Breezy. I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't even notice that the ppp connection is up and that the DNS is being mangled, instead they will assume that there's no Internet connection after boot-up, despite having configured it that way.
