Everytime my update manager fails, it raises a bug that ends up being a
duplicate of this one.

I see it is Fix Released, in which case, why does it keep failing?

[Bug 1008144] [NEW] Cannot install Google Chrome when the beta is installed

2012-06-03 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

I have Google Chrome Beta installed, but encountered a bug, so I want to
revert to stardard Google Chrome. After downloading the .deb and running
it, I expect the Software Centre to allow me to install it, but instead
I get:

Conflicts with the installed package 'google-chrome-beta'
Error

The Software Centre should handle the awkward dependency issue and
remove -beta for me (after a confirmation) and not force the user to
have to manually remove the conflicting packages.

However searching for google chrome, chrome or google in the
software centre does not show the package and as a result, I am unable
to use the GUI to remove it from the system. (See my related bug

[Bug 997996] [NEW] Changes to config whilst connected are lost when you disconnect

2012-05-11 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
 - Connect to a server in your list
 - Edit the server config, such as the name of the server
 - Disconnect from the server

The server list will still show the updated server name, but the
underlying config file will have been reset to how it was when the
connection was opened.

[Bug 681863] Re: Not save passwd of connection

2012-05-11 Thread Stephen Brandwood
I shall attempt to rewrite this bug report for the OP:

Title: Password is not saved when Save password is ticked

To reproduce:
Open a connection to a server and fill in the username and password in the box
displayed. Click the save password button.
The config file on disk is not changed to include the username and password,
and further connections will ask for the password again.

Editing the connection and adding the username/password that way works.

[Bug 998004] [NEW] Windows login screen not shown

2012-05-11 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Previous versions of Remmina showed the Windows login screen when I
connected, allowing me to see the users available and click the one I
wanted.

The current version *forces* me to enter a username and password. I
appreciate being able to save the username/password, but please give us
the option to use the login screen instead, as I don't necessarily know
the usernames available on our test machines and makes it much easier
for us to use a single connection for multiple accounts.

[Bug 998001] [NEW] Have to confirm certificate on every connection

2012-05-11 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Every time I connect to a server it asks me to confirm the fingerprint
of the certificate is correct. Whilst being quite useless as humans
generally can't read hexadecimal very well, I suppose I could cross
reference it the first time I connect. The fingerprint should be saved
and the user should not be bothered on repeat connections.

This is a security issue because it is impractical for the user to check
the fingerprint every time they connect, especially considering how easy
it would be for Remmina to cache. This dialog will simply be ignored and
encourage the user to blindly accept every dialog they see, defeating
the point of it to begin with.

[Bug 998009] [NEW] Gnome-do does not appear

2012-05-11 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

When I start gnome-do, the box does not appear on my screen to interact with,
there is no logging at all in the terminal to suggest something is wrong, event
with --debug, but it is running in some capacity:
$ pgrep -fl gnome-do
10998 /bin/sh /usr/bin/gnome-do
11004 /usr/bin/cli /usr/lib/gnome-do/Do.exe

It used to work fine in 11.04, until I did the double-upgrade to 12.04 a couple
of days ago. I have done purge and reinstalls with no help. Gnome Classic mode
seems to have no effect either.

Can anyone suggest how I can debug this further?

[Bug 977438] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 gnome classic panel displayed on full screen videos

2012-05-06 Thread Stephen Brandwood
I can reproduce here also:
- Youtube fullscreen always has both top and bottom bars.
- Totem DVD fullscreen will initially have bars, but after 5-10 minutes the
bars will appear over the fullscreenness. Turning off/on fullscreen hides them
again for another 5-10 minutes (repeat until end of film).

Gnome Classic (no effects) seems absolutely fine, only the effectfull
version is affected.

[Bug 912001] [NEW] ISO9660 warning does not have accept one time option

2012-01-04 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

When adding a file over 2 GB to a disk you are presented with a warning about
the different versions of ISO9660 and their support. You are given two options:
 - Never Add Such File
 - Always Add Such File

[Bug 892487] [NEW] phpmyadmin.conf not copied

Public bug reported:

I installed phpmyadmin after installing apache2, php5 and mysql-server. After

[Bug 680817] Re: Personal information is not saved between sessions

2010-11-29 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Yes, nothing has fixed it as far as I know. After I posted this report I
switched to Pidgin and noticed some strange behaviour. Whilst testing
Empathy, I changed my name to Tester, to see what affect it had on the
underlying XML (none, apparently). Then in Pidgin, when I spoke to other
users, they saw my name as Tester, though I couldn't see it in Pidgin
itself. Seems to be some crossover in the configuration files.

I don't think that's related.. but anyway. Are there any particular
config files you'd like me to check out?

[Bug 680817] [NEW] Personal information is not saved between sessions

2010-11-24 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I have a Jabber account set up. If I go to Edit - Personal Information, the
Alias is set to my email address by default. I can change the alias and it will
persist until I reboot my computer, at which point it will be reset to my email
address.
I've tried exiting empathy and opening it again and it does persist, it seems
the reboot is what resets it.

Does anyone know of a config file where I could set it manually whilst
this is fixed?

I'm using Empathy 2.32.0.1 in Ubuntu 10.10

fine in Totem and PiTiVi, but not openshot.

[Bug 573350] Re: Separate system tray icons for each service

2010-05-02 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Thanks for those links, it was worth raising this bug to get a reference
to that article. I understand the work being done and I approve of what
you'll be trying to achieve.

I see that the system is a work in progress and it is perhaps a little
bit of a shame that the full notification area change wasn't ready for
this release, especially as after only one day the Opera and bluetooth
icons have already made a mockery of the system.

I still think an option to separate the messaging menu icons could be a nice
idea as these are much more active components of the notification area.
Furthermore it would be nice to be told that you have a new IM or a new email
by different icons, as they require different levels of attention.
And the speech bubble is still misleading.

I will keep an eye on the project until the next release.

[Bug 573713] [NEW] Does not initialise properly after install

2010-05-02 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

I installed 10.04 on my laptop without a network connection, so the
installation was unable to update package lists or any other fancy
things before I first booted the system.

Soon after booting, with internet now set up, both Synaptic and aptitude
were unable to find either the 'vim' or 'xchat'. If you typed 'vim' into
a terminal it would suggest you install the vim package, but aptitude
could then not find it.

After telling synaptic to reload the package lists and waiting for
around 5 minutes, aptitude was able to find and install both vim and
xchat. However, synaptic still had no idea about these packages, as
shown by the attached screenshot.

In summary:
1) Package lists should be reloaded automatically when the OS first has an
internet connection or supplied on the installation disk.
2) Synaptic needs to refresh with these new package lists without requiring a
reboot.
3) Terminal should never suggest to install a package that aptitude/synaptic
know nothing about.

Note: I am unsure whether synaptic just failed to recompile its search
correctly or had no knowledge of the package at all. As the search is
the best way to find a package, I would still consider this a critical
failure.

[Bug 573719] [NEW] search does not update after rebuilding

2010-05-02 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

If you enter a search term whilst the search is rebuilding, it will show you
the currently available results.
When the rebuilding is complete, I would expect any new results to be shown,
but this does not happen. Instead I need to perform the search again.

To fix: Perform the search again when the rebuilding is complete, appending any
new results to the bottom of the list.
Alternatively: Do not show any results until the rebuilding is complete and
display a message within the results panel explaining that the results will
appear shortly (or one of those spinny in-progress icons will work too).

[Bug 532754] Re: gnome-appearance does not reflect order of metacity buttons correctly

2010-05-02 Thread Stephen Brandwood
This bug is especially important in Ubuntu 10.04 where different themes
push the window buttons into different corners of the window. Each of
the example images on the Theme and Window Border pages should show the
window buttons where they will actually appear in the theme.

Are the images on these two pages generated by hand or automatically?

[Bug 573771] [NEW] Unable to change the position of window controls

2010-05-02 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04 moves the window controls to the left side of the window,
which is fine and is a valid design choice for the theme.

However there a great number of a existing Linux users that wish to
update all their software whilst retaining an OS layout that they are
familiar to. Therefore, the gnome-appearance-properties dialog should
allow the user to choose what side of the window the window buttons are
placed on.

I believe this represents the best of both worlds: new users get a
consistent theme and existing users can keep it how they are used to it.
They should not have to resort to third party blogs and tools.

[Bug 573350] [NEW] Separate system tray icons for each service

2010-05-01 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

The current implementation of gwibber in Ubuntu 10.04 is not as user friendly
as it could be. As it stands it is split into two distinct sections of the
system tray:
- The first is represented by an envelope and contains links to open up the
main Chat, Mail or Broadcast windows.
- The second is represented by a speech bubble along side your username and
lets you change the Chat status.

These raises several issues:
- The first icon of an envelope is misleading when it does more than just mail.
- The second icon of a speech bubble is misleading as it does not let you send
any chat messages.
- It now takes two clicks to open up the contact list for chat or to check mail.
- The two icons are separated by the date, which is completely unrelated.

I propose this is changed to split the service into three icons, one for chat,
one for mail and one for broadcast. This has distinct advantages:
- The user now clicks on the icon for the action they wish to perform.
- The rare situation of adding new accounts can still be done from within the
window that opens, or via right-clicking the system tray icons.
- Only a single click is required to get to the primary screen of each service.

As it stands I would prefer to turn off the gwibber integration as I
feel it is not easier to use than each of the applications independently
and I am not confident in the benefits an integration would bring.

What do you think?

[Bug 573355] [NEW] Mail does not run in the background

2010-05-01 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Currently the envelope icon in the system tray provides access to the
user's chat accounts, mail client and broadcast accounts. Both the chat
and broadcast options open a new window for their respective contents,
but after closing this window the applications continue to run in the
background.

When the mail client option is chosen a new window is again opened, but
the service is terminated once this window is closed.

This behaviour is inconsistent and subtracts from the benefits of the
integrated communication system that gwibber provides. I recommend that
evolution should run in the background by default, to match the
behaviour of the other clients or it should be separated from gwibber
altogether.

[Bug 573360] [NEW] Magic Spacebar option has no explanation

2010-05-01 Thread Stephen Brandwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

There is an option within Mail Preferences that says Enable Magic Spacebar.
In order to understand what this option does the user must click Help, search
for Magic Spacebar, click the first result and they are finally provided with
an explanation.

All options within the preferences page should be self-explanatory, or
in the rare cases that this is difficult, an easy way to get this extra
information should be provided. This could be supplied via a tooltip or
a help icon (?) that when clicked, shows further information about the
option.
