[Bug 572970] [NEW] Battery indicator stuck on fully charged

2010-05-01 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When the laptop battery is fully charged and the power cable is removed
the battery monitor does not notice this change, and does not report the
battery as discharging until the battery is critically low alert is
hit.

This affects gnome-power manager as settings such as suspend on laptop
lid closed do not work correctly, when this issue is encountered and
the laptop lid is closed the screen is just blanked (which is the option
for laptop lid close when on ac power).

Running acpi in terminal correctly gives:
Battery 0: Discharging, 95%, rate information unavailable

their origin in an error in the post-installation script of libxml-sax-

This other bug has already been confirmed.

[Bug 363361] Re: Lock screen dialogue freezes on correct password

2009-05-08 Thread SteveH
Hi, thanks for the response. Attached it the debug log you asked for.

It is also worth noting that, whilst creating this log, I noticed that the bug
only occurs once per boot:
The first time I kill gnome-screensaver, start it in debug mode and lock screen
the bug occurs.
Any further time I kill gnome-screensaver, start it in debug mode and lock
screen the unlocking works flawlessly.

I will attach the same form of debug log for when the unlocking succeeds
in my next comment.

[Bug 363361] [NEW] Lock screen dialogue freezes on correct password

2009-04-18 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Running 9.04 release candidate (upgraded from 8.10)
gnome-screensaver version 2.24.0-0ubuntu6 (I think this is the package that
handles the lock screen dialogue?)

When confronted with the lock screen dialogue (whether produced from
Lock Screen, switching back from guest session, or restoring from
suspend mode) it is impossible to unlock. If the correct password is
given the dialogue freezes at the status message Checking... and fails
to respond. The fan then starts up so I suspect the CPU is being used at
100%

This bug occurs with and without desktop effects. I'm running a laptop
with an integrated intel graphics driver.

My Sony laptop had a hardware failure, and I replaced it. So, unfortunately,
I'm unable to help any more. Now running Kubuntu 8.10 on an Acer Aspire and

However, bearing in mind, I couldn't get through the install, I'm not sure
how I could have tried changing AGPMode settings.

Re: [Bug 288614] Re: Kubuntu (8.10-rc) hangs on boot - LiveCD Install

2009-02-23 Thread SteveH
Hi,

I replaced my Sony laptop (because of a hardware failure - not Kubuntu), so I
can't help with this problem any more.

I'm now running Intrepid on an Acer Aspire and it works fine. But it doesn't
have an ATI Radeon graphics card, so I wouldn't expect to see the same
problem.

Regards,
Steve H.

Thanks and have a great day,

Could you please test against Intrepid? A number of improvements have

[Bug 288614] [NEW] Kubuntu (8.10-rc) hangs on boot - LiveCD Install

2008-10-24 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

LiveCD boot just hangs.

LiveCD (in Safe Graphics mode) gets as far as KDE splash screen and
hangs.

Install (with quiet splash removed from boot options) displays
Starting Ubiquity; then blank/black screen; then nothing. Gave it 10
minutes just in case!

I'm trying to install on a Sony Vaio PCG-K215Z (which has an ATI Radeon
9200 graphics card).

Fiesty was the last release that ran out of the box.
I got Gutsy working by installing an older driver.
Hardy had pretty much the same issues as Intrepid.

Re: [Bug 221329] Re: Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 live CD (and install) hangs during boot

2008-08-15 Thread SteveH
Install hangs.

The first Ubiquity screen (Welcome/choose language) is OK.

When I click on Forward, the next screen (Where are you/choose
city/country/time zone) displays - but hangs as soon as I click on the
Selected City selection box. No mouse or keyboard - not even Caps Lock.

I gave it about 5 minutes before giving up (as I know it can be slow), but
there was no further activity on CD or HD.

After installing with xforcevesa, you can try the following:

 - Log in through kdm in failsafe console mode (by choosing it on the
Sessions menu) - Then type kwin . Now you have a window manager.
 - Type kcontrol
 - Open the X display configurator, and set the driver to VESA.
 - Restart.

Your graphic card should work now, but in VESA mode, so no 3D accel.

[Bug 219775] Re: Broadcom B43 wireless doesn't work in 8.04 worked in 7.10

2008-08-13 Thread SteveH
Hi Ted,

First I tried the reinstalling the Broadcom stuff as in the post by Jag
Dragon. Then I tried using the 2.6.24-20 image with your modifications
above. The new driver worked OK however the new kernel kept freezing
from time to time so I applied your modifications to revert back and
somehow my wireless interface started to work OK. I had originally
picked up this thread because I was seeing similar wireless problems as
the other guys in the beginning of the thread.

 the xforcevesa option.

When I install it, it dispays KDM login properly, and I can even start a
session in failsafe console mode. But when I start a normal session, it
shows the splah screen (without the messages, just the graphics: no
fonts), and then the big white square. Sometimes it appears what looks
like the edge of an enormous font. This makes me think the problem has
something to do with font rendering.

If I login in failsafe console and select vesa screen driver, it works,
but obviously I cannot take advantage of the graphic card's features.

I can help posting the logs, if somebody tells me what log can be
 useful.

 Best regards. Juan.

Hi,

OpenSuse 11 LiveCD (in Failsafe mode) works.

In sysinfo it shows Driver: radeon. I'm not sure if this is what is being used
or what it believes should be used.

When I have a spare 15 minutes, I'll give OpenSuse 11 a go (in safe mode). I
know it doesn't work in normal mode.

[Bug 221329] Re: Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 live CD hangs during boot

2008-06-12 Thread SteveH
This is also a problem when Hardy is installed.

And because of a package conflict, xserver-xorg-video-ati can't be
downgraded to the 1:6.6.3-2 version.

at this stage there appears to be no way to upgrade to Hardy.

[Bug 221329] [NEW] Kubuntu Hardy 8.04 live CD hangs during boot

2008-04-24 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

The live CD hangs during boot.

I've removed the quiet and splash boot options and just before the
Black screen of death, I see:

Starting K Display manager
Starting Avahi ...

Running on Sony Vaio PCG-K215Z laptop

Note. This has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics card, which caused
problems when I upgraded to Gutsy. I eventually fixed by downgrading the
driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati) to the Fiesty version: 1:6.6.3-2ubuntu6.

Obviously no such option is available when booting from a Live CD.

Re: [Bug 156653] Re: gdm session crashes after logging in (after upgrade to 7.10)

2008-03-27 Thread SteveH
Hi Basilio,

A subsequent upgrade of the Hardy alpha environment broke my
installation. I couldn't even log in: a failed malloc in the startup of
the session stopped me from even logging in in single-user mode.

I have since installed the server (64 bit) version of of Hardy beta but
have not yet added a desktop environment. This time I will be installing
it as a virtual guest of the Hardy server using KVM. I'll give you my
feedback as soon as it's installed.

Cheers,

Steve

[Bug 156653] gdm session crashes after logging in (after upgrade to 7.10)

2007-10-24 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Hi,
After upgrading to Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10, I can no longer open a normal Gnome
session. When I enter my user and password the screen goes black then I see for
a brief second what seems to be part of the startup log after which I am
returned to the login screen.

On the other hand, I can login successfully if I choose a Gnome failsave
session.

Please could somone indicate what logs I should look at to find the
error?

Thanks for any help on this.

SteveH

The gdm logs of the succeeded startups and the failed ones seem to be
identical.

I'm including the latest gdm log, the gdm.conf file and the xorg.conf
file:

# This file should not be updated by hand. Since GDM 2.13.0.4, configuration
# choices in the GDM System Configuration file (/etc/gdm/gdm.conf) will
# override the default values specified in this file.
#
# If you were using an older version of GDM, your system may have the the older
# gdm.conf configuration file on the system. If so, then this file is used
# instead of the GDM Custom Configuration file for backwards support. If you
# make changes to the GDM Custom Configuration file and they seem to not be
# taking effect, this is likely the problem. Consider migrating your
# configuration to the new configuration file and removing the gdm.conf file.
#
# You can use the gdmsetup program to graphically edit the gdm.conf-custom
# file. Note that gdmsetup does not support every option in this file, just
# the most common ones that users want to change. If you feel that gdmsetup
# should support additional configuration options, please file a bug report at
# http://bugzilla.gnome.org/.
#
# If you hand-edit the GDM configuration, you should run the following command

# will also be notified to update with the new configuration.
#
# gdmflexiserver --command=UPDATE_CONFIG configuration key
#
# e.g, the Enable key in the [debug] section would be debug/Enable.
#
# You can also run invoke-rc.d gdm reload or invoke-rc.d gdm restart
# to cause GDM to restart and re-read the new configuration settings.
# You can also restart GDM by sending a HUP or USR1 signal to the
# daemon. HUP behaves like restart and causes any user session
# started by GDM to exit immediately while USR1 behaves like
# reload and will wait until all users log out before

[Bug 47516] Re: CDROM drive eject disc after randomly seconds of use

2007-04-14 Thread SteveH
This is a squeaky wheel gets the grease posting, with a bit more info.
I also get the dropping to single dma msg, with an error number (I
assume) of 883.997589. Maybe that will tell you where it's being
issued. I tried Draconid's trick, killed gvm, and viola! played my
audio cd's. Just to see what would happen, in the middle of a cd I
entered gnome-volume-manager in a terminal session to start gvm up
again, and in about 30 seconds, the cd was ejected and the music
stopped.

I just created my Ubuntu 6.10 install cd this week, so the bug is still
there. I'm new to Ubuntu, and to Linux, so may be missing something
somewhere. But as Draconid said, killing gvm isn't a viable solution in
the long term.

It was quite nice to find this thread out there that nailed my problem.
Thanks for what all of you in the thread (and perhaps behind the scene)
have already put into this.

[Bug 3593] Re: Xvnc4 (package vnc4server) unable to find fixed font in Breezy

2006-12-03 Thread steveh
On Edgy, I solved the problem by adding the -fp parameter to the
/etc/vnc/config file as follows:

sudo gedit /etc/vnc/config

opens config file for r/w:
# Default vncserver configuration. See the vncserver man page for details.

-PasswordFile $HOME/.vnc/passwd # Location of VncAuth password
-desktop $HOSTNAME:$DISPLAYNUM ($USER) # Desktop name
-pn # Continue even if standard ports fail
-httpd inline # Serve Java viewer inline

###
# Add correct X11 fonts path spec. Because vncserver does not
# recognize -fp, it passes it to Xvnc, which vncserver invokes (see man
# vncserver). Hence, this is equivalent to specifying
# Xvnc :1 -fp /usr/share...

-fp
