Turning off blur in the Unity plugin in CCSM helps tremendously! So blur
should not be enabled for this driver...

[Bug 1167595] [NEW] Dash slow to load on Intel HD4000

2013-04-10 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

The Unity dash is exceptionally slow to load on Raring with latest
updates (as of writing). On Ubuntu 12.10 it was much better, so this is
a regression. It seems to be the animation which is slow, the fade it
only shows around two frames. But total load time is also longer.

Total load time from pressing super key to animation is done is around
2.5 to 3 seconds, which is too long. It seems to be graphics related
(blurring maybe?), as everything in the dash is loaded from before.

Please ask if there's some more information I can provide.

[Bug 977319] Re: Swappiness not optimal for desktops

2012-09-29 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Thanks for the feedback. It's been a while, but after some more testing,
it wasn't all that good in the end. The reason is that when it does
eventually hit the memory ceiling and has to swap, the machine locks up
for a longer period as suddenly there's a lot of data needing swapping.
But I feel that there is a lot of room for improvement from the default
values.

Also I have a new laptop now, so further testing is not possible.

[Bug 1058599] [NEW] Super + drag window doesn't hide help overlay

2012-09-29 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

I noticed that Alt + drag mouse to move window is changed to Super +
drag window. While this change makes sense, it is annoying that the
normal super action triggers as well. Especially the super overlay
obstructs the view behind it.

What I suggest is that if the Super button is pressed and the user
clicks the mouse button, the normal super action should be aborted.

[Bug 1026687] [NEW] Software sources properties refuse to load with faulty repos in list

2012-07-19 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

1) I added the Fazena repo and I'm using Quantal. There are no files for
Quantal there in the repo. Running sudo apt-get update hence gives me error
messages.
2) I want to fix the added ppa lines, so I start Software Center and click
Software Sources.

What happens:
Software sources tries to update the database. Naturally, it fails just like
apt-get update. An error message is displayed containing:

W:Failed to fetch
http://ppa.launchpad.net/tiheum/equinox/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/source/Sources
  404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch

, W:Failed to fetch

  404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

Upon clicking ok, the message disappears, but nothing more happens. The
software source window is never launched.

What I expect to happen:
After the error message, the window should still load, letting me fix the
faulty lines.

[Bug 977319] [NEW] Swappiness not optimal for desktops

2012-04-09 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

(Not sure what package to file this in, if it's wrong I apologize)

I recently doubled the amount of RAM in my laptop from 1GB to 2GB. While
noticing a significant improvement, I still got bad response time in
many programs when multitasking.

A typical use case:

- Running Opera, Spotify and Inkscape (all somewhat cache and memory hungry).
- 1 GB RAM used
- ~250MB in swap

Inkscape would for instance respond to commands with a slight delay for
every action, even when drawing normal lines. Changing views in Spotify
could be slow. Changing programs took from 0 to 2 seconds.

Since both CPU and MEM usage was low, I investigated using iotop and
noticed high io usage everytime there was a delay. I looked up swap
usage on the net and got introduced to swappiness. Changing it to 10 and
running swapoff and swapon changed everything drastically. The delay
when switching programs is gone. The delay in Inkscape actions and
Spotify are gone. Overall the system feels MUCH more responsive.

To me having a system starting to swap when I have 1GB of available
memory (half of my ram) is unreasonable. I can see the point of
reserving a lot of space for heavy operations, like compiling etc, but
these are not day to day tasks for most users and delays when swapping
out is to be expected.

This is anecdotal evidence, but a search on the net shows quite a lot of
similar cases with similar results.

What is the rationale for keeping it at 60 for desktops? It certainly
does not work for me on 2GB of ram and I can only see it making even
less sense for more RAM as is common nowadays.

+ UPDATE:
+
+ Just thought I should include what the Ubuntu Wiki says about swap for
desktops:
+ The default setting in Ubuntu is swappiness=60. Reducing the default value
of swappiness will probably improve overall performance for a typical Ubuntu
desktop installation. A value of swappiness=10 is recommended, but feel free to
experiment. Note: Ubuntu server installations have different performance
requirements to desktop systems, and the default value of 60 is likely more
suitable.
+
+ Given the immense improvement I'm noticing I strongly feel for the users
+ out there just thinking their systems are just slow like I was thinking
+ for a long time.

[Bug 772177] Re: Alt+Tab Feels slow

2011-10-08 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Well, I find it strange that the behavior is exactly the same with the
new switcher. I'm using latest Oneiric, and there's still a delay on the
switcher (has bugged me a lot!) AND the switcher appears briefly
(flickers) when Alt+Tab'ing quickly.

Marking Unity as it seems integrated into the Unity interface (shares
for instance config with Unity).

There's by the way no option for adjusting the delay in the Unity
config, just a lot of other switcher related options.

[Bug 696999] Re: Natty daily build Live CD - Desktop incomplete Intel 82865G

2011-04-11 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
I can confirm this somewhat:

Now it gives a message that my card isn't supported for Unity. Good
enough (is it supposed to be unsupported?). But when using Ubuntu
classic (no effects) I get graphic corruption at the taskbars and
menus. Jaunty worked fine. I do also get occasional freezes (can move
mouse, but that's all, doesn't respond to keyboard).

Is there anything I can do to help sort this out?

[Bug 738117] [NEW] Spotify prevents Ubuntu from shutting down on first try

2011-03-19 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

Case: Trying to shut down computer with Spotify (a Qt based music app)
running.

What I expect to happen:
Computer terminates program and shutdowns gracefully.

What happens:
Spotify window disappears (traybar icon still remains). Shutting down the
computer a second time works.

One can argue that this probably is a bug on Spotify's part, but either way
Ubuntu shouldn't just hide the window and sit there..
Happens in at least Maverick and Natty (I think it affects all versions, but
those are the two which I've tried).

[Bug 738122] [NEW] Files and folders and Programs places doesn't hide on second click

I am perfectly aware that it's not in Ubuntu repositories. This bug
report is NOT about Spotify, but Ubuntu's handling of programs not
letting it shut down (which should be killed). When I shut down my

[Bug 594145] [NEW] Screen magnifier not working properly in GDM

2010-06-14 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When enabling the screen magnifier it will only show the wallpaper
magnified. The login box or other buttons will not show in the magnified
area. Since the accessibility button is on the right side, covered by
the magnified area it's impossible to turn of screen magnification again
since it won't show in the magnified area (clicking the spot where it
should've been is not possible either). I am using a fresh install of
ubuntu lucid with latest updates.

Using Intel945GMA with default driver.

How can I at least turn it off again?

I've been looking in gconf under /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/accessibility
as both my user and root, but all options are set to false. I guess
they're set as the gdm user to which I have no access.

[Bug 456564] Re: Another sound problem (volume and balance)

2010-06-14 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

  Hi,

just upgraded to current Karmic beta. All went fine and well, but I have
one issueabout the volume control - as it's working now it's almost
  dangerous.

When I adjust the volume slider I can max out my laptop speakers at
about 15%, any higher and they are about to blow. When using a headset I
can't go over 9% before the sound gets dangerously loud. When using the
volume buttons on my laptop I can start at 0%, then click two times
until the volume becomes so loud (12%) I don't dare go any further when
  wearing a headset...In Jaunty I had a much more fine-grained control.

After inspecting how the new volume control works, I see that it adjusts
both the master volume and the PCM according to some algorithm. While in
concept I understand this is smart in order to keep noise down, it works
really terrible in my case. Imagine having a computer that if someone
(or something!) sets the volume to anything above 20% and your speakers
(and hearing) stand a good chance to blow.

  Laptop:
  Fujitsu Siemens Si1520.
  lspci -v attached.

[Bug 456564] Re: Another sound problem (volume and balance)

2010-06-14 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Sorry for taking a while, I got used to it so I completely forgot about
the bug. I am using lucid now and I haven't encountered any major ear-
blowing issues except that the volume control is very sensitive so I
seldom use my PC's media keys to adjust volume as the steps are too big.
Also I never push the volume slider past around 25%...

[Bug 575483] [NEW] Profile picture dialog doesn't work

2010-05-04 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-me

I suppose this might be wrong package as it's the dialog that's a mess, but I
honestly don't know where to file it and Me Menu is the first entry to the
problem.
I use Lucid, fresh install, with all latest upgrades.
indicator-me: 0.2.6-0ubuntu1

When I try to select a profile picture to use in Me Menu I get
unexpected results:

Expected result:
1. Click Me Menu
2. Click stock icon with name to open personal information dialog.
3. Click stock icon
4. Browse to picture in my home folder and open it
5. Picture is applied.

What actually happens:
1. Click Me Menu
2. Click stock icon with name to open personal information dialog.
3. Click stock icon
4. Trying to select a file in my home folder selects the folder or file two
spaces above or a random entry (not sure).
5. When browsing back to home folder if it entered a folder it will select a
file and freeze selection at that file. It's then not possible to select
anything, and the dialog has to be canceled. Sometimes it does work, however,
but I haven't figured out what makes the difference. But bottom line is that
it's pretty much broken for me.

The result is a bit hard to explain, so please ask if anythings unclear.
Note that this happens ONLY IN MY HOME FOLDER.

In addition, browsing with the keys will lock it up after going past the
last visible entry (which means it locks up when trying to scroll).
Using the mouse's scroll wheel works.

This happens regardless of Show hidden files is enabled or not.

[Bug 456564] [NEW] Volume control is dangerous when setting volume level

2009-10-20 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

[Bug 308930] [NEW] Wireless kill switch won't turn wireless back on

2008-12-17 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Public bug reported:

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Si1520 laptop. Previously when using hardy the
rf kill switch worked perfectly, but after installing Intrepid 64-bit it
will only turn the wireless off. After pushing it once to turn it off,
the light disappears and network manager notices the change. Then when I
try to turn i back on nothing happens. In order to get wireless back on
I have to boot into windows and turn it on there (rebooting ubuntu
doesn't help). lsmod says that iwl3945 is loaded, so I guess I have some
intel wireless card.

Deleting the tracker cache (~/.cache/tracker) solves the problem (but of
course removes the cache). It's incredible that this bug is still around
given it's consequences.

[Bug 268081] Re: Can't mount any USB media

2008-10-27 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
I had the same problem on a Fujitsu-Siemens si1520 laptop. I have tried
two different brands of USB thumbdrives and they both gave same error.
It ended up being to the fact that I had installed Ubuntu by using a USB
stick instead of cd, so /dev/sdb1 was mounted as being the CD-rom, hence
the confilct. Removing that line from fstab solved the problem.

[Bug 285866] Re: crackling in audio when application volume is 100%

2008-10-25 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
Thanks for pointing out that. I changed the device the standard volume
mixer should adjust and then set the PCM volume to about 25%. Then the
distortion disappears. This had nothing to do with pulseaudio, so your
assumption was correct. I really wonder what has changed from hardy
though, as I am 100% sure I didn't need to put the PCM volume at 25% in
order to avoid distortion (more like 90%). Any suggestions? It shouldn't
be like this for new users who don't know how to adjust things,
especially not since the mixer had selected the wrong device to begin
with I think.

Not related to pulseaudio, I hope this is correct package...

** Changed in: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: pulseaudio = alsa-driver

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: pulseaudio
-
  Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
  Release: 8.10

  Pulseaudio version: 0.9.10

I just installed fresh install of Intrepid beta and upgraded to latest
packages. I was using Hardy before and had no problems then.

After the Intrepid install the sound is very loud and there's lots of
noise when playing back sounds. I thought the volume controls was maxed
out, as that would give similar symptoms on a working setup. However,
they were barely half of max. So I installed padevchooser and started
looking for what could be wrong.

The thing that fixes it is reducing the application volume to no more
than 60-70%, if any louder the audio will sound really
garbled/crackling. Now, the problems is that the volume setting is 100%
by default so all new programs I launch sounds terrible. The sliders
will occasionally reset also making it unusable. Note that reducing the
sound output from e.g. music programs will let me have the sliders at
100%. But programs like pidgin and login/logout sounds are set at a too
high level by default (and no option to adjust them).

The positive thing is that I can now have louder output without
crackling than before if I adjust all the sliders correctly, but this
should be fixed before Intrepid release!

Public bug reported:

I experience a minor bug with nautilus. Sometimes after long periods of
using my computer (with nautilus open) and opening many files, when I
try to open a file in nautilus the icon suddenly appears blank (which
means that it turns into the new/blank file icon.) Name is still there
though. Clicking another file makes that file's icon blank too and it
seems as nautilus has lost connection to the files. In order to browse
my harddrive I have to do a killall nautilus. After it restarts, it
works nicely again.

Any ideas on how to pinpoint this bug?

I use Ubuntu 7.10, upgraded from 7.04. I have one ext3 partition along
with several NTFS partitions. The bug might be related to the NTFS
driver?

 Status: New

I don't think your problem was related to this bug. What kind of SATA
controller du you have? This bug-fix was as far as I know for Silicon

fishor: A fix has been released for tryout. I tried to compile it
myself, but I get errors when compiling the kernel (unrelated to the fix
I think) so it won't compile. Do you think you could compile it for me
like the last one if it's not much trouble?

[Bug 153096] Re: [sata_sil][sata-ide-bridg] failed to set xfermode

2007-12-06 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
I followed that how-to the first time when it didn't work.

Now I followed your steps and it comppiled fine. However the .deb
package is broken so it won't install for some reason. Also my partition
had tons of errors on it after a reboot, so I guess it could be related.
I would be grateful if you have the time to compile for me, although I
now know it's very time consuming :) Otherwise I'll guess I'll have to
try again later sometime or wait for a released kernel. Thanks a lot for
the help, good to see it's seemingly fixed.

Installed the deb which worked fine. However, the dmesg log file seems
capped and only includes the last data. I hope though that it contains
what you wanted, otherwise tell me and I'll try it again and try to get
all the data.

And what did you mean by 1. Please subscribe the upstream bug ? I
don't see any subscription options there...

Thanks a lot for the help so far

Thanks for the instructions, worked great.

However, it didn't fix the problem. It seems like it gives a little more

Please tell me if there's something more I can do.

2007-12-03 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
I would love to try, but I am not sure how to proceed. Can I safely
install it on feisty? And where do I get this kernel from and
instructions on how to install? I checked out the Hardy Heron alpha, but
it seems like it uses 2.6.22-14, so I got no livecd options?

Thanks in advance

[Bug 153096] Re: Won't find my 2nd HD, Failed to set xfermode ATA errors

2007-11-03 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
acacha: No, those bugs are most likely not related at all. Keep in mind
that my system works in Feisty, and that IRQPOLL solution does not
work.

So, everyone, before confirming this bug, please make sure that your
disk works in Feisty, but not in Gutsy. Or that you're certain that it's
the same bug by other means. I believe the bug could be easily fixed
since it's just something that was changed from 2.6.20 to 2.6.22, but I
have no real knowledge about these things. That said, thanks for the
input.

Forgot to mention that 7.04 didn't have this problem and both my drives
worked perfectly.

[Bug 152645] Re: Ubuntu doesn't install properly, ruins Vista installation

2007-10-15 Thread Svein Tore Seljebotn
After some more research I found out that GRUB got installed onto wrong
HD. The reason for this is that I have to USB pen drives plugged into my
computer and they were put BEFORE my SATA HD. So USB disk 1 became
(hd0), USB disk 2 became (hd1) and my SATA HD became (hd2). So I
reinstalled GRUB into (hd2), but that doesn't really work either as GRUB
doesn't detect my USB drives at boot time so my SATA HD becomes (hd0)
again and thus the entries doesn't work. Manueal editing will do it of
course, but USB disks really shouldn't be set as (hd0) upon
installation?
