[Bug 1203520] Re: 10de:1040 snd_hda_codec_hdmi (via pavucontrol or applications playing sound) freezes Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Stable Release Update (SRU) bug control nomination request: [Impact] Playing sound, opening pavucontrol mixer or hotplugging HDMI sink hard-freezes Ubuntu 12.04 LTS unless module snd_hda_codec_hdmi is blacklisted. This is neither a workaround nor remedy, as additional digital sound cards would have to be installed (and fine-tuned for delay compensation) to re-establish required functionality thus removed from HDMI. Similar issue exists in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1169984 duplicates, potentially making access to display or even surround amplifier a DoS vector. [Test Case] While running speaker-test, VLC, Xine or other sound sources, open pavucontrol or connect another monitor/amplifier combination that is a sound sink with different speaker setup. Playing sound before and after amplifier is turned on may suffice to reproduce crash, but no 100% trigger has been found yet. [Regression Potential] Per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1169984/comments/124 the bug may actually be the regression. Current situation is to risk severe crashes (for reasons inscrutable to average users) or lack proper audio (after module blacklisting, which also not feasible for many end users). Avenueside effects to potential fix yet to be determined. [Other Info] VDR / Home Theater systems presumably have to remain on 12.04 LTS for years. Proprietary Nvidia driver may be implicated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1203520 Title: 10de:1040 snd_hda_codec_hdmi (via pavucontrol or applications playing sound) freezes Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1203520/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1203520] Re: 10de:1040 snd_hda_codec_hdmi (via pavucontrol or applications playing sound) freezes Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
To keep this at Incomplete is getting beyond the limits of what a user can install on the one production machine around (not everybody has an entire farm), while Ubuntu 13+ cannot currently be booted from USB either. Please see also developments at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1169984 (where I had been told to open a new bug) #124, 127 et seq. which do seem to indicate similar causes after all, i.e. a lot of people are now blacklisting this snd_hda_codec_hdmi because they have to, and though they'd need it.

I can now also confirm that the #13 fix does work for me too after invoking service virtualbox manually once, as recommended in #17, in spite of the BUILD_EXCLUSIVE error still shown on compile, and even after reboot into kernel 3.8.0-30. Thanks to both of you for the fix and instructions! Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) wrote on 2013-09-05: BIOS (1.32 Rev. A). If you update to this, does it change anything? As this test can never be undone (cf. attachment), it might not have been the best option: ;-( Now kernels 3.2.0-49+ crash beeping frantically on resume without even re-activating the monitor (LED stays amber). Curiously kernel 3.2.0-49 itself specifically does not use the entire screen are anymore but shows wide black borders (with the Nvidia driver) on the LXDE desktop in spite of FullHD 1920*1080 resolution. Kernel 3.2.0-48 (which used to wake up before the BIOS update) now crashes to a synchronized but black display with the fans spinning up ever faster on resume. Fortunately kernel 3.8.0-30 (unlike 3.2.0-48 now) still survives a suspend/resume cycle even with the new BIOS 1.32, but now pops up the crash reporter for a System Program Problem twice on first boot, referring to an issue with vbetool (interesting as a mode-switching problem might indeed be one to freeze the machine), but closing without an opportunity to actually comment on the issue/report in the browser. Also affects kernel 3.2.0-51-generic-pae (distributed to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS today); using this however thelast words (unlike 3.2.0-49) are not consistently ATA*: SRST failed anymore, but sometimes refer to mei or USB read/64 failures. blacklist mei through /etc/modprobe.d does not prevent the freeze either: I still need to revert to 3.2.0-48 through grub. If there is a way I can run an extended trace on snd_hda_codec_hdmi while making it crash, please let me know. [Bug 1169984] Re: 3.8.0-18 HDMI/DisplayPort audio regression: Either oops or opening device fails with -ENODEV
Also affects Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin which freezes most of the time when trying to use HDMI audio (in particular from vdr-sxfe, mplayer, vlc, google-talkplugin) up to and including the current Kernel 3.2.0-49 without including snd_hda_codec_hdmi in /etc/modprobe.d /blacklist-oss.conf (thereby losing sound over the Nvidia outputs). [Bug 1203520] [NEW] snd_hda_codec_hdmi (via pavucontrol or applications playing sound) freezes Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin freezes most of the time when trying to use HDMI audio (in particular from google-talkplugin, mplayer, vdr- sxfe, vlc, xine) up to and including the current Kernel 3.2.0-49 without putting snd_hda_codec_hdmi on the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss.conf (thereby losing sound over the Nvidia outputs). Invoking pavucontrol with snd_hda_codec_hdmi loaded almost always results in a crash that makes even Ctrl-Alt-SysRq inaccessible. Freezes also occurred with both hw and plughw devices of the Nvidia HDMIs under ALSA when pulseaudio had been uninstalled for testing. According to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1173769 #3 there is a kernel issue which most likely is to happen with Nvidia graphics, this is also not fixed by using https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu- audio-dev/+archive/alsa-daily/+files/oem-audio-hda-daily- dkms_0.201307180553%7Eprecise1_all.deb according to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1169984 #16. New bug as identified by David Henningsson (diwic) to have different causes than https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-desktop-tests/+bug/1169984 at #119 et seq. Blacklisting is the supposed fix in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1181616 and http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2012/05/msg00110.html but not the solution if HDMI audio is needed. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1203520 Title: snd_hda_codec_hdmi (via pavucontrol or applications playing sound) freezes Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1203520/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1203446] Re: ata4: SRST failed (errno=-16) freezes Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS Precise Pangolin on resume since vmlinuz-3.2.0-49-generic-pae
apport information ** Description changed: Since linux-image-3.2.0-49-generic-pae:i386 (3.2.0-49.75) has been installed per /var/log/apt/history.log 2013-07-05, my Hewlett-Packard DC7800CMT (Intel Core2Duo E6750@2.66GHz, unjumpered Hitachi/Toshiba DT01ABA300 3TB hard drive alone on SATA5 of HP Grizzly mainboard, Nvidia GT 520 graphics with snd_hda_codec_hdmi usually in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss.conf due to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1169984 and its dozens of duplicates so far still unfixed for Ubuntu 12.04) freezes on most resumes (wake-up attempts) from stand-by with a full-screen text console message of ata4: SRST failed (errno=-16), requiring a hard power cycle to reboot, IT Crowd style (turning it off and on again). It is not remedied by a pci=nomsi parameter nor by changes to the SATA wiring, i.e. hardware causes are less likely than a timing issue/race condition. This is also confirmed by the fact that reverting to the previous kernel linux-image-3.2.0-48-generic-pae:i386 (3.2.0-48.74) via the Grub menu makes the problem disappear. --- AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24. [Bug 1183672] [NEW] update-manager grabs major share of CPURAM when browsing list items
Public bug reported: The moment e.g. Header files to the Linux kernel version 3.2.0 or Linux kernel headers vor version 3.2.0 on 32 bit x86 SMP (-44 thereof, i.e. between second and subsequent kernel-related entries from the top today) is highlighted, update-manager 1:0.156.14.11 on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS deselects the item, reproducibly grabs 100% CPU, becomes barely responsive for minutes (on a 2.66 MHz Dual Core) and starts leaking memory (process had to be user-terminated when taking more than 30% of 2 GB). Neither delays nor excessive RAM consumption occur when moving the selection within the lower, non-kernel items of the update list. ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1183672 Title: update-manager grabs major share of CPURAM when browsing list items To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/1183672/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1116221] [NEW] Enabling additional repositories does not trigger update of available packages
Public bug reported: It's possible that what I'm describing below are actually 2 bugs. If so, feel free to correct me. On my freshly installed Ubuntu 12.04, there is no way for me to install i.e. Skype from SC without additional measures because the info on available packages is not updated when adding a repository. Also, there is no graphical way in SC to trigger this update. I need to do a 'sudo apt-get update' in the console before any packages of the newly added repo are shown. Steps to reproduce: 1) Install Ubuntu (in my case I installed 12.04.1 an ran all updates) 2) Open SC 3) Search for 'skype' No appropriate results are shown (isn't this a bug by itself? Shouldn't SC at least show Skype and prompt me to enable the Partner repo when I try to install it?). 4) Go to Edit - Software Sources 5) Go to tab 'Other Software' 6) Enable 'Canonical Partners' 7) Enter your password 8) Click 'Close' 9) Now search for 'skype' again Result: No appropriate results are shown. Expected result: available packages info is updated automatically OR the system prompts me to do so. To confirm that indeed the package info of the Partner repo has not been updated: 1) Click on the right side of 'All Software' to reveal the drop-down menu 2) Choose 'Canonical Partners' 3) Notice no results are being shown. Since there is no way to trigger the update of available packages in SC (is there?), the only workaround is: 1) Open a Terminal 2) Type 'sudo apt-get update' and hit Enter 3) Enter your password and hit Enter 4) Close SC 5) Open SC 6) Wait a few moments (SC seems to be slow in picking up changes) 7) Search for 'skype' Skype now finally appears and can be installed. This bug is still very much present, even with all the latest updates installed. I just ran into it several times after re-installing my system from scratch and trying again for a moment without the separate videocard. It's even become worse since the system just drops (locks) to a shell (see attached picture I took ) The only way out is a hard reset / power cycle. And after rebooting, Apport doesn't even notice the system has miserably failed. I tried installing kernel 3.5 from linux-generic-lts-quantal (now at 3.5.0.22.29) and the situation is much better there, even though I did experience one lock-up as well. This lock-up was a bit different though, since the system didn't drop to a shell and I could still move the mouse cursor. Still had to hard reset my machine though. What can I do to get this issue sorted out? ** Attachment added: picture of my screen when the lock-up happened https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/975083/+attachment/3487791/+files/20130118%20i915%20lock-up.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/975083 Title: [sandybridge-gt1] GPU lockup with WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915_drv.c:413 __gen6_gt_wait_for_fifo+0x94/0xa0 [i915]() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/975083/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 989674] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 i386 does not reboot back Unity from suspend
Since kernels 3.2.0-25-generic-pae through current 3.2.0-32-generic-pae mostly work for me as per comment #21, all I needed to add (as root) was an /etc/pm/sleep.d/lirc_suspend (modelled on novatel_3g_suspend from the same directory) that would service lirc stop on suspend and accordingly (re)start LIRC on resume to keep usable infrared support. No open-heart surgery really, though probably not exactly in Kansas anymore as Joe Avg. User's self-help comfort zone. Some of the most recent 3.2.0-32 kernel's /var/log/syslog found in the process might be of interest for systems where more severe issues persist: Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.104093] floppy0: floppy timeout called Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.104107] PM: resume of drv:floppy dev:floppy.0 complete after 3003.989 msecs Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152082] PM: resume of devices complete after 10111.887 msecs Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152389] PM: resume devices took 10.112 seconds Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152391] [ cut here ] Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152396] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/kernel/power/suspend_test.c:53 suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90() Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152398] Hardware name: HP Compaq dc7800p Convertible Minitower Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152399] Component: resume devices, time: 10112 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152401] Modules linked in: nls_iso8859_1 nls_cp437 vfat fat rfcomm bnep vesafb mt352 saa7134_dvb saa7134_alsa vide obuf_dvb dvb_core mt20xx ir_lirc_codec lirc_dev tea5767 ir_mce_kbd_decoder ir_sony_decoder snd_hda_codec_hdmi ir_jvc_decoder tda9887 ir_rc6_decoder ir_r c5_decoder snd_hda_codec_analog rc_rc6_mce tda8290 ir_nec_decoder mceusb tuner tpm_infineon snd_hda_intel smsc47b397 snd_hda_codec saa7134 rc_core video buf_dma_sg videobuf_core snd_hwdep usblp coretemp btusb uvcvideo v4l2_common videodev tveeprom nvidia(P) snd_pcm bluetooth snd_seq_midi snd_rawmidi snd_ seq_midi_event snd_seq hp_wmi sparse_keymap snd_timer snd_seq_device ppdev parport_pc mac_hid wmi mei(C) psmouse serio_raw snd lp parport tpm_tis soundc ore snd_page_alloc e1000e floppy usb_storage Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152434] Pid: 5491, comm: pm-suspend Tainted: P WC O 3.2.0-32-generic-pae #51-Ubuntu Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152436] Call Trace: Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152441] [c105a2c2] warn_slowpath_common+0x72/0xa0 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152444] [c10985a9] ? suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152446] [c10985a9] ? suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152449] [c105a393] warn_slowpath_fmt+0x33/0x40 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152451] [c10985a9] suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152454] [c10982d9] suspend_devices_and_enter+0xe9/0x1c0 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152456] [c109846b] enter_state+0xbb/0xf0 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152458] [c109712a] state_store+0x8a/0x110 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152461] [c10970a0] ? pm_trace_dev_match_show+0x20/0x20 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152465] [c12adadb] kobj_attr_store+0x1b/0x30 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152468] [c11a6046] sysfs_write_file+0xa6/0x100 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152471] [c1144cff] vfs_write+0x8f/0x160 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152474] [c11a5fa0] ? sysfs_poll+0x80/0x80 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152476] [c1144fdd] sys_write+0x3d/0x70 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152479] [c15add9f] sysenter_do_call+0x12/0x28 Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152481] ---[ end trace fcc923e1c0a382e4 ]--- Nov 1 12:27:26 kernel: [277622.152524] PM: Finishing wakeup. @ Tomasz - Interesting. I have not installed lo-menubar nor the package libreoffice-presenter-console. [Bug 865672] Re: Adobe Flash Player Settings dialogue does not respond to mouse clicks
Still no fix? I would just like to add that the workarounds all have their own issues: 1. http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html#117645 - no matter how many times I set it to allow eu42.spreed.com, it always seems to 'forget' this after some time and I have to set it again. And again. And again. 2. Navigating through the dialogue using the keyboard - does not work since 'space' does not activate any settings here. 3. And Unity 2D... well... it's just that. I've had to cope with it for 6 months and I really don't want to go back. So what is keeping this bug from being fixed? 8 months and counting... [Bug 1011994] [NEW] Connecting / disconnecting DisplayPort often causes crash
Public bug reported: As per http://askubuntu.com/questions/146716/connecting-disconnecting- displayport-causes-crash : When I connect or disconnect an external monitor to DisplayPort of my HP ProBook 6550b, the system crashes most of time. While the situation in Ubuntu 11.10 was still somewhat workable (see http://askubuntu.com/questions/102219/ui-freezes-when-disconnecting- displayport), in 12.04 final (using Unity 3D) it has gotten worse. The weird part is that during the 12.04 beta's, the situation was actually improving! I was able to successfully connect and disconnect a DisplayPort monitor without the system breaking down on me. But now with 12.04 final (with all updates), it's just plain terrible. When I now connect an external monitor using the DisplayPort connector on my HP ProBook 6550b, it only works sometimes. Most times (but not always!) the screen just goes blank and the system seems to crash (not even CTRL+ALT+F1 works anymore). Only a hard shutdown by keeping the power button pressed for several seconds and then a restart gets me out of this. I suspect the chances of the system crashing become higher as the system's uptime increases, especially when there have been one or more suspend-resume cycles (although I have also experienced this bug once right after a cold boot). Disconnecting is roughly the same as with 11.10 (see issue mentioned above), with the difference that if I resume from suspend, I no longer have to do a CTRL+ALT+F1, ALT+F7 cycle to get my screen back. [Bug 999638] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 - won't resume from suspend. Acer Aspire One 722
Since modesetting may play a part in making resume fail, I retried after switching the onboard Intel Q35 graphics of the HP dc7800p CMT to an Nvidia GT520. Expectedly this has caused some changes to how the system behaves: It will suspend once, stopping its fans - as well as usually respond to the keyboard Wake Up button and even work long enough to allow the user to re-logon, but then often freeze or panic with the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights blinking. If it does continue to a usable desktop, further use of the Sleep key will only cause the monitor to go dark briefly, but always keep the fans running, and automatically wake up again just seconds later most of the time - also resulting in freezes with Caps Lock and Scroll lock blinking in many cases. Re: [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash
I am sorry about the issues you are having, but please, let's be consistent on what issue we are talking about in this particular thread. There are multiple possible reasons for X to crash, and it strikes me that you clearly refer to another issue than the one described here. I was having this issue (reported one of the duplicates), my X crashed approximately every 20 minutes. After having switched to nouveau (the open source driver), my box ran fine for two weeks without a single crash. This particular issue seems to be related to my specific video card, I have colleagues running the nvidia-current on other cards just fine. ... why you guys started make 12.10 when you don't have finished 12.04! Many different people are working on different projects. Op 23 mei 2012, om 21:13 heeft Igor Korcek het volgende geschreven: Not just Nvidia driver, also open sourced driver has problem. It happened once with my ATI too. What can i say more - 12.04 is the most buggy release. Even with Unity 2D i had some problems but after all Unity 2D is useless for long work. Canonical can't complain about people switching back to Windows or anothe distro. Don't take me wrong - Ubuntu is fantastic and loved Unity but this bugs with crashing Xorg are so important. Please click the line neat the top of this page stating that this bug affects you too then. As explained in the message starting this thread, you will need (the courage;-)) to download and open one of the two .deb packages currently called Receiver for Linux (12.1 Release Date: 4/23/2012) x86 client - requires OpenMotif v.2.3.1 from http://www.citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/details.asp?downloadId=2323812productId=1689163 - there are entries for an x86 (32-bit, third from the top there at the time of writing), and a 64-bit version further down the page. Though Canonical praised Ubuntu 12.04 LTS at such surprising length as a greatly enhanced virtualization client, the installation procedure for the Citrix Receiver / ICAClient seems to offer no substantial difference from 10.04 LTS, let alone improvement over the former (on which it actually appears slightly more responsive on my small sample of machines available for testing), in either case coming from an external site to which not even a deeplink is offered from the default repositories, and which has to be let loose on the system as if presumably closed-source, binary-only third-party code was unfailing, while prompting to agree to an unreadable EULA. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1001976 Title: ICA Client (wfica): Citrix (Receiver) incomplete and not well integrated into Ubuntu Software Center To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1001976/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
