[Bug 112590] Re: no internet connection until I restart router

2011-12-02 Thread Thom Pischke
I have the same or a similar bug. Whenever I reboot my Dell laptop, I
can connect to the router, and even to the admin interface, but I can't
access the internet until I restart the router. All other devices in my
household, including a tablet, two smartphones, and another dell laptop
also running Ubuntu 11.10 do NOT have this problem. Bizarre. Had the
same problem with another router with I replaced. Not sure when the
problem started but never had it on 11.04. I'm not even sure if it's an
Ubuntu bug, some bizarre router behavior, or even a problem at the ISP.
This bug looks very old, so I'd be surprised if it's really the same
issue.

2008-12-14 Thread Thom Pischke
deleted .xsession-errors, rebooted and turned on compiz, then tried to
duplicate this issue.

1. Started Firefox and Rhythmbox with both windows maximized
2. From Rhythmbox, pressed alt-tab. Success, able to flip back and forth
between images of rhythmbox and firefox windows
3. Minimized all windows so desktop visible. Pressed alt-tab.

HANG. Everything frozen except mouse. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace unresponsive.
All applets, menus, programs frozen. No life outside the mouse cursor.
Hard reset of computer and reboot. This is what always happens. It
happens at other times too, at least once a day, making compiz nearly
unusable for me. Sometimes it seems to hang just 'cuz, when I'm doing
nothing in particular except maybe changing a tab in firefox or
activating some windows.

Good Luck!

~/.xsessions-errors file does not exists, I assume because no errors
were written since I rebooted. That would mean the hard-hang doesn't
result in an error being written.

[Bug 277339] Re: Sound intermittently inaudible at boot with Sigmatel STAC9200

2008-11-20 Thread Thom Pischke
Just a bit of constructive criticism here. I don't doubt Mackenzie when
he says that there are likely multiple bugs. But I think that people
reporting a bug which certainly -seems- very similar on the surface
should be treated with respect. People reporting bugs should be
respectful, and people interacting with bug-reporters should be
respectful. It's not reasonable to expect non-experts to know that
multiple and widespread problems with sound in HDA Intel devices are all
unrelated. That said, the fix for me was the following:

sudo depmod -a
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo reboot

gnome-ppp but no internet in my apps before I finally stumbled onto this
issue.

Definitely an embarassing bug for an LTS release.

[Bug 226176] Re: soundconverter should make use of multiple CPU cores

2008-07-09 Thread Thom Pischke
This shouldn't be marked Fix Committed because the intrepid repository
has only Sound Converter 1.2. 1.3.1 is required to get the multi-core
improvements. Please update this package to 1.3.1

Version 1.3.1

* SoundConverter is now able to run multiple conversions at the same time.
Default is one per core, you can adjust with --jobs.
* Note that SoundConverter is now 4 times faster*. Fixes various crashers
reported by ubunteros.
* (thanks Michael, Øyvind Stegard, Matthieu, ...and apport !) Updated
Polish, Serbian and German translations.

[Bug 150960] Re: glassfish has no startup script

2008-06-17 Thread Thom Pischke
Agree with Matthias and the original bug poster. Glassfish should have
an /etc/init.d/ script, and should be run by glassfish user. Most
people don't like to run glassfish as root.

Also, I notice that with a fresh apt-get install, when I attempt to run
asadmin start-domain, it looks for (and incorrectly creates) a default
domain in the root directory. It should be using the default domain in
/var/lib/glassfish instead.

Not sure it's related, but I noticed that Firefox had suddenly slowed
down. I checked xorg.conf and found that the 'greedy' heuristic and the
other settings had somehow moved from the Device section to the Monitor
section. This may have been caused by using one of the screen
resolution GUIs however. Using the 965 chipset.

2008-03-08 Thread Thom Pischke
I'm a little worried that months have gone by and this still isn't
fixed, or even seeing any recent activity. Sound is STILL not working
properly on a system that should be among the easiest to support. (Dell

At least the problem is no longer rooted in the kernel, since suspending
while playing media can kickstart sound, but this still needs a real

[Bug 196605] [NEW] No carat when composing in gmail in hardy

2008-02-28 Thread Thom Pischke
Public bug reported:

In current firefox-3.0 in hardy, for the last few days, there is no edit
carat when composing a mail in gmail. This is extremely annoying as it
makes it impossible to tell where text will appear when typed. The
carat works fine when typing this message into launchpad though, so
seems to be specific to gmail

Worked fine a week ago, so recent updates seem to have broken something.

Aha Number 2. Did some more testing. If I choose View - Zoom -

[Bug 196655] [NEW] sftp copy fails in nautilus

2008-02-28 Thread Thom Pischke
Public bug reported:

In hardy, I can use nautilus to browse a remote linux server via sftp:

sftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/user/

I can browse the folder content and even drag the content to my desktop
for a local copy.

However, when I try to drag something from my desktop to the remote
server, it copies only 8 KB before stopping with a Failure message.

Incidentally, there's a crash when I abort the transfer from server -
local with the stop button -- nautilus then displays only my local home
directory.

[Bug 134435] Re: Doesn't detect External Monitor

2008-02-19 Thread Thom Pischke
Can confirm that external monitor detection in displayconfig-gtk also
fails for me. It's impossible to get it to even recognize that a second
monitor is available, even though I'm currently running both monitors
mirrored. Can configure the monitor manually with xrandr tools.

Dell Inspiron 1420n (VGA external monitor port)
Intel x3100 graphics card
HP w2207 external monitor

I don't see how this is a duplicate of Bug #144641, since that deals
with generation of xrandr, and this issue deals with detection of an
external monitor. If 144641 also includes using xrandr to detect
external monitors, then ok.

[Bug 132320] Re: Tracker consumes more then 90% of CPU even when indexing is disabled

2008-02-16 Thread Thom Pischke
For me, tracker crashes at least daily on hardy, but maybe that's
because it's still alpha. Tracker is definitely a net-minus for daily
use in hardy right now, will probably just uninstall it at some point if
it doesn't stabilize. Most of the time when I try to actually use it,
it doesn't work anyway, so the constant drag on the hard drive is not
worth it.

[Bug 183364] Re: [hardy] lost sound when upgraded from 2.6.24-3-generic to 2.6.24-4-generic

2008-02-09 Thread Thom Pischke
After noticing to my surprise that sound was suddenly working in the
latest kernel, I tried a reboot to see if it would stay fixed. Broken
again after reboot. So I tried suspending and sound still not working.
Finally, trying a trick mentioned earlier in this thread, I played an
audio file in totem-gstreamer and then suspended again. This time when
I came back, the audio started playing!

So, I can confirm the workaround, but this issue not fixed. I suppose
when I get desperate I'll try 'rebuilding the alsa modules with the
module assistant', and the other steps detailed by others, but that
seems more like fixing the problem myself than having it fixed in
Ubuntu. Especially given the comment from a fresh upgrader from gutsy
that he also lost sound... Having users rebuild modules to get sound
probably isn't an acceptable final outcome for hardy.

2008-02-08 Thread Thom Pischke
Note that this problem seems to be in the kernel, not alsa-driver,
unless that package is somehow included in the kernel. Sound still
works fine in 2.6.24-3. Setting back to confirmed, unless someone can
explain why this issue is not fixed by a standard apt-get upgrade. I
haven't done anything with module-assistant or alsa-source, so I don't
think that is relevant to the issue of sound being broken in all kernels
after 2.6.24.3.

I can confirm this problem even without hibernation or suspend on a dell

to happen for any type of Video.

Note also that the problem is NOT consistent. Sometimes a reboot fixes

Also no problems with gxine or vlc.

[Bug 175774] Re: [hardy] Enabling Normal effects produces badly drawn window shadows.

2008-01-16 Thread Thom Pischke
Can confirm both bug and XAA fix, though that is not really a fix since
I then lose video. Frustrating that even with an open source driver and
hardware bought from dell exclusively for ubuntu compatibility, that
compiz still won't work properly (ie, with functioning video). Hope
someone gets this figured out soon. EXA is also very slow, particularly
in firefox, as noted in a separate issue.

2008-01-02 Thread Thom Pischke
After this morning's fresh boot, sound is now working with Flash and

totem than the sound architecture. Quality seems ok, even with PCM at

[Bug 124159] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx Wireless driver regression in gutsy

2007-12-21 Thread Thom Pischke
The friend to whom I sold the laptop with the 4306 rev 2 decided to go
wireless, so I'm looking at this issue again. Can confirm that setting
wireless rate to 5.5M works wonders. Getting consistent 450 KB/s
transfer rates now and seems stable. Am I right in concluding from
previous comments that I should be able to bump the wireless rate to 11M
with no adverse effects? This would be helpful for home network
traffic.

[Bug 124159] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx Wireless driver regression in gutsy

2007-12-21 Thread Thom Pischke
Worth noting that I get noticeably better performance with 5.5M than
11M, counterintuitively.

Peak actual speed at 5.5M fixed rate: ~500KB/s, Average: 200-300 KB/s
Peak actual speed at 11M fixed rate: ~300KB/s, Average: 100-150

Speeds are quite erratic, so numbers above are just to make the
comparative advantage of 5.5M rate over 11M rate bit more quantitative.

[Bug 124159] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx Wireless driver regression in gutsy

2007-12-21 Thread Thom Pischke
so how about someone write up an easy HOWTO for noobs, explaining how to
set the rate to 5.5M permanently across reboots?

I'm also skeptical that this is fixed in hardy, since there has been
some confusion in this post with another bug about not being able to
connect to routers, which is unrelated to the original bug for which I
opened this issue.

Not willing to upgrade (my non-technical friend's PC) to hardy just to
test however.

[Bug 124159] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx Wireless driver regression in gutsy

That was at 5.5M.

Here's the same test at 11M
http://www.speedtest.net/result/214238098.png

And here at 24M:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/214238517.png

The trend is clear, increasing bitrate past 5.5M results in greater
performance loss. Faster the bitrate, slower the transfer, ironically.

Speeds above were observed while transferring a 4GB file over Samba via
wireless connection. With other wireless cards, I typically get about
1.3 MB/s for the same transfer. With this frustrating broadcom
card/driver the peak was just over 500KB/s with an average closer to
300. Usable and adequate for internet transfers, but lousy for home
network.

Doh! That last comment was potentially misleading. Should have said
that internet upload speed held constant at the limit of my internet

bitrate setting. This may be simply because it's far too slow to be
impacted by this driver problem.

Interestingly, I usually observe a short spike in speeds when I switch

thanks to all those who have contributed! Hopefully this hack will not

 2. Paste in the following:

#!/bin/sh
ACTION=$2
if [ $ACTION = up ]; then
 iwconfig eth1 rate 2M
fi

 3. sudo chmod 755 /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/bitratehack

[Bug 155216] Re: network-manager fails to stop properly when connected to wireless

2007-11-19 Thread Thom Pischke
Can confirm at least a similar problem, where shutting down the wifi
interface (eth1) hangs. This prevents shutdown from completing, hanging
forever on the splash screen. Can also duplicate simply by deactivating
the wireless connectivity via right click on the network manager applet.
This brings an instant hang to the network manager, system monitor and
other applets, and prevents much of anything else from working. Not
even possible to launch a terminal at that point.

All problems fixed by uninstalling Network Manager and using the gnome
network configuration tools.

Broadcom 4306 rev2.
