Re: [Bug 1639374] Re: grub-pc fails to remove, rendering lubuntu uninstallable on EFI machines

2017-03-20 Thread Thomas W. Fort
When I had the issue, the problem was the flash card security. Zeroing out
the flash card helped some, as I recall. Since then, I switched to Linux
Mint, for multimedia support.

Re: [Bug 1639374] Re: grub-pc fails to remove, causing lubuntu installs to crash

2017-01-17 Thread Thomas W. Fort
Laptop doing fine, ignoring it's flash drive altogether. Not sure if
security on it was frozen (have read some about that...)

On my homebuild similar issue--wanting Lubuntu on both machines, laptop for
mobility, homebuild for media.

On homebuild, install crashed after shred of purchased single flash drive.
Went back and zeroed it, and then install finished fine.

I like zeroing---kind of like replaning brakes in a car-- slightly
destructive, but man, does it get you up and running!

Re: [Bug 1639374] Re: grub-pc fails to remove, causing lubuntu installs to crash

2017-01-09 Thread Thomas W. Fort
The problem was the Windows flash drive. I zeroed it out, and then
installation finished fine. I wanted the flash drive to be the boot drive,
but the installer skipped it, and used the larger drive for all partitions.
The system has been fine ever since.

Re: [Bug 1649975] Re: Installer crashed twice

2016-12-19 Thread Thomas W. Fort
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1639374 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1639374

The problem was the Windows partition on the 20 GB flash booting drive. I
zeroed out the drive from a command line, then put a new boot partition on
the drive, and then the installation cruised. The laptop has functioned
well since then. Thanks!

[Bug 1292398] Re: multi-monitor : second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2014-08-13 Thread Thomas W.
Because this seems to be a timing issue, I extend the approach of
HaraldK. The idea is just start the g-s-d a little bit later. Therefore
I create a file /usr/share/upstart/sessions/gnome-settings-
daemon.override which overrides the exec statement:

script
  sleep 2
  exec /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon
end script

This works for me on several setups (with SSD and conventional hard
disks). Adding a somewhat random delay is not really a satisfying
solution. A real Bugfix is still needed!

Other test relying on /etc/xdg/autostart/ completely fail, although the
autostart is basically working and a g-s-d startup file is installed by
default.

[Bug 1208069] [NEW] USB Mouse stops working

2013-08-03 Thread Thomas W. Brown

works although eventually the mouse will, again, stop working.

[Bug 1162543] [NEW] Fresh 12.04 installation with updates is getting GPU crashes

2013-03-31 Thread Thomas W. Brown
Public bug reported:

I'm very much a Linux and Ubuntu n00b so am not sure what all to provide
here. I'm generating this report from the XDiagnose facility so
hopefully all necessary data is being attached.

I just installed 12.04. Upon starting the system for the first time I
applied all the recommended updates. Upon restarting afterwards, I
started getting reported GPU crashes.

I removed and reinstalled xdiagnose and then ran to get this crash
report.

HD 2000 graphics.

[Bug 763808] Re: 11.04 does not properly load NVIDIA driver for Geforce 9500 GT

2011-04-18 Thread Thomas W. Anderson
The GeForce 9500 GT video card has 2 DVI connectors but no VGA
connectors. The results noted in this bug report were done using a
monitor which was connected to the computer via a VGA cable and a VGA to
DVI adapter. When I replace this configuration with a DVI cable
directly from the video card to the monitor, the driver does load along
with Unity. With ubuntu 10.10 the driver would load properly with a VGA
adapter and VGA monitor connected to the video card. But with ubuntu
11.04, you need a direct DVI cable to the monitor to get the driver to
load (and enable Unity).

[Bug 763808] [NEW] 11.04 does not properly load NVIDIA driver for Geforce 9500 GT

2011-04-17 Thread Thomas W. Anderson
Public bug reported:

I just did a fresh install of 11.04 but when I booted, I got a message
that I didn't have the right hardware to run Unity and it defaulted to
the old desktop. This is new computer with:

ASUS M4A89TD PRO motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

I checked for and installed all updates.

When I check for Additional Drivers ... I see that the NVIDA preferred
NVIDIA accelerated graphics dirver [Recommended] is activated and
currently in use.

When I go to System | Administration | Additional Drivers there are two
NVIDIA drivers listed:

* NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recoimmended]
* Experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards

I tried both ... still no Unity. It does take a minute or so on boot up
to get to the login screen -- I am assuming that this is part of the
problem.

I am dual booting this configuration with Windows and everything runs
under windows just fine so I don't think there is any hardware problem.

I installed 10.10, loaded updates via update manager, Activated the
NVIDIA Rel 172 version of the video drivers through Administration
System Additional Drivers ... and that seemed to give me 3D
capabilities. That is, if I look at ScreenSavers, the 3D specific screen
savers (GL*) worked. However, in the 11.04 installation, 3D ScreenSavers
did not display anything. So I guess my point is that 3D acceleration
for my hardware platform works with 10.10 but not with 11.04.

[Bug 550794] Re: Restart button logs me out instead of restarting pc

2010-06-10 Thread Thomas W
I was able to solve the problem by changing my permissions in System -
Administration - Users and Groups.
After upgrading from Karmic, my user was set to custom permissions, with about
half of the boxes unchecked. I changed the permissions to the Administrator
preset and that seems to have taken care of the problems for me.

This bug affects me as well. I also have problems with sound hardware
not working and my external hard drive doesn't mount. Rebooting

you need more information.

[Bug 550794] Re: Restart button logs me out instead of restarting pc

2010-05-02 Thread Thomas W
I've rebooted a few times to reproduce the bug. It seems that the three
problems I'm experiencing are related. Every few boots, seemingly
randomly, I don't have sound, the ability to mount drives (an external
usb drive, or an internal windows partition), or the ability to shut
down / reboot via any GUI (indicator-session or gdm). All three of these
occur together. I never have a boot where I have sound, but can't
reboot, etc.

So could it be that every once in a while something goes wrong with some
permissions, blocking me out of doing these things? This may be a
problem with something other than indicator-session.

[Bug 361205] Re: Tracker uses notifications with actions when the index is corrupt

2009-04-25 Thread Thomas W-P
I too upgraded to 9.04 from 8.10 (32 bit).

I too encountered the bug and followed the release notes
(http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904) but tracker-
processes -r did not run.

Thanks to the above post I was able to succeed by installing tracker-
utils.

Thanks to all who work so hard on this.
