[Bug 1875712] [NEW] Unusable graphics, nouveau + G73 (GEForce 7600)

2020-04-28 Thread Tim Hockin
Public bug reported:

This is an older card, but it worked well on ubuntu 12.x :)

Booting "Try Ubuntu" on 20.04 get the correct resolution and 2 displays,
but the video glitches and shows all sorts of noise. It is largely
unusable (which makes filing this bug very hard).

Safe Graphics works in low-res.

The nvidia proprietary driver seems to not support this device any more.
I like this card because it has no fan (and I don't do a lot of
graphics-intense stuff).

This is my #1 problem with Unity right now. I keep a lot of "in-

longer do this at all on 14.x

[Bug 1094412] Re: Precise does not resume from S3 - kernel panic on resume

2012-12-30 Thread Tim Hockin
Update: Booting with 'pci-noaer' alone does not fix the problem. I seem
to need 'noapic' to boot.

[Bug 1094412] Re: Precise does not resume from S3 - kernel panic on resume

2012-12-29 Thread Tim Hockin
Best guess:

Booting with 'noapic', I see the "irq 5: nobody cared" message on
resume, along with 1 IRQ5 counts in /proc/interrupts (the devices
claiming that IRQ are quiescent).

Without 'noapic' that must be triggering something else to go haywire,
perhaps the AER logic (though that is all MSI, so probably not). I'm
flying blind on those boots.

I bet that, if I can recall how to re-enable IRQ5, I'll see it
continuously asserting. Chipset or BIOS bug maybe. I don't know if I
had AER enabled under Lucid, so that might be the difference.

Update: Booting with noapic seems to work!

As before, it worked under Lucid, without the noapic flag, so it's still
a bug IMO.

Running a suspend with pm_trace set, I get:

I don't know what magic might be needed here, though. As I said before - it

[Bug 1094412] [NEW] Precise does not resume from S3 - kernel panic on resume

2012-12-28 Thread Tim Hockin
Public bug reported:

4 days ago I had Ubuntu Lucid running on this computer. Suspend and
resume worked flawlessly every time.

Then I upgraded to Ubuntu Precise. Suspend seems to work, but resume
fails every time. By the flashing keyboard lights, I guess it kernel
paniced. It fails from the Live CD and from a fresh install.

Here is my debug so far.

Run Update Manager
  Install all updates
Reboot
Try suspend = fails

sudo apt-get install synaptic
Run synaptic
  Install linux-generic-lts-quantal (3.5.0-21)
Reboot
Try suspend = fails

Run jockey-gtk
Install "experimental" 304 nVidia driver
Reboot
NVRM error in dmesg
Add video=vesa:off vga=normal to /etc/default/grub
Run update-grub2
Reboot
No more NVRM error (also no splash screen)
Try suspend = fails

echo core > /sys/power/pm_test
echo mem > /sys/power/state
system acts like it is going to sleep, and then wakes up a few seconds later

press power to resume = fails

At this point I am stumped on how to debug. This is a "modern" computer
with no serial ports. It worked under Lucid, so I know it is POSSIBLE.

Mobo: ASRock X58 single-socket
CPU: Westmere 6 core (12 hyperthreads) 3.2 GHz
RAM: 12 GB ECC
Disk: sda = Intel SSD, mounted on /
Disk: sdb = Intel SSD, not mounted
Disk: sdc = Seagate HDD, not mounted
Disk: sdd = Seagate HDD, not mounted
NIC = Onboard RTL8168e/8111e
Sound = EMU1212 (emu10k1, not even configured yet)
Video = nVidia GeForce 7600 GT
KB = PS2 (also tried USB)
Mouse = USB

Suspend and resume is a must-have for me. I am at my wits end.

[Bug 527401] Re: grub-installer fails to install on a raid1 array

2010-11-26 Thread Tim Hockin
I've got this same problem, it seems.

I originally installed to /dev/sda. I later added 2 new disks. I
manually (with the Ubuntu GUI, anyway) made a RAID1 of them, and have
copied everything over to them.

Trying to install grub yields:

r...@thdesktop:/# grub-install --modules="mdraid raid" /dev/md0
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.

r...@thdesktop:/# update-grub
Generating grub.cfg ...
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `md0'.

r...@thdesktop:/# update-initramfs -u
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-25-generic

Looking at /dev/md0 (and the disks that comprise it) I see no trace of GRUB
having been installed there.

Do I need to redo the partitions? Differently how? With how much
dangling space?

[Bug 529223] [NEW] new pkg for mcedaemon

2010-02-27 Thread Tim Hockin
Public bug reported:

I have a project - mcedaemon (http://mcedaemon.org) which I think
supplements mcelog and provides much better behavior for people who
really care about machine checks. I've just cut the 2.0 release (now
with dbus!) and I'd like to see it flow into some of the major distros.

The catch: I really don't have the time (a fussy 6 week old baby sits in
my arms right now :). I am still maintaining upstream, and we use it
at Google, so it's pretty stable (well, any 2.0 bugs have yet to shake
out, but I don't expect much :).

It's small and should build cleanly.

[Bug 496681] Re: Rhythmbox does not save playlist on iPod

2010-01-21 Thread Tim Hockin
Banshee can not make playlists on ipod either, but it is a less awful
ipod experience than rhythmbox.

The only app I found to make playlists on the ipod is gtkpod. To make
it find your ipod you have to unmount it from the desktop (not eject!)
and then remount it from Places. Then gtkpod can find it.

[Bug 446035] Re: iPod mounts as a normal disk in Karmic (gtkpod/others won't list the iPod), fine in Jaunty

2010-01-16 Thread Tim Hockin
sigh. Broken out of the box seems to be a recurring theme for me with
Ubuntu lately.

[Bug 483237] Re: Pulseaudio and RME HDSP: pops and cracks, or module not being loaded at all.

2010-01-04 Thread Tim Hockin
I have the exact same problem. Forcing default.pa to use module-detect
rather than module-udev-detect works, but has to be a stop-gap answer.

Are the pulseaudio people (whomever that might be) aware of this? Do we
know the root cause? This is a really nice pro-sumer card and it's a
shame to have terrible support for it..
