[Bug 151016] Re: New in 2.6.22-13: System doesn't always wake from suspend
According to Volanin's analysis, this seems to be something introduced upstream - likely in 2.6.22.8 or 2.6.22.9. I will also concur with the fact that after waiting 5-10 minutes one can always wake up the system - and sometimes pressing the power button wakes it before that. Anyway, I have attached my dmesg files from the system. The first is the dmesg from before I went into suspend, and the second is from after I resumed from one of these hung suspends. Note that it took around 10 minutes to get the system to wake up. ** Attachment added: dmesg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10228595/dmesg -- New in 2.6.22-13: System doesn't always wake from suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151016 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 151016] Re: New in 2.6.22-13: System doesn't always wake from suspend
I believe I have traced the bug. Anyway, in my suspend/resume testing, through trial and error I found that the issue does NOT occur if I unload the ohci1394 module prior to suspend. Even if I'm having it occur almost every suspend on a particular boot, unloading ohci1394 makes it go away. As this was unnecessary for the -12 kernel, I am suspicious that a commit relating to ohci1394 between the -12 and -13 kernel is our problem. As of now, the only one I see is: * ieee1394: ohci1394: fix initialization if built non-modular Can the devs look into this? [Bug 151016] Re: New in 2.6.22-13: No video after resume from suspend on MacBook
The bug is actually a gnome-power-manager bug, so I'm closing this and opening a bug against it. I actually *can* get video after this type of freeze - it's just that I have to close the lid for a while and press the on button. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- New in 2.6.22-13: No video after resume from suspend on MacBook https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151016 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 153483] System doesn't always resume properly on lid open
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager In recent versions of gnome-power-manager (recent meaning 2.20ish versions), my system (MacBook Core Duo) sometimes doesn't properly wake from suspend if I open the lid. When this happens, I hear some system noise on resume but get no video and the system is unresponsive to input. However, if I close the lid, wait a while, and then open the lid and press the Power button, I *can* wake the system from suspend. Additionally, about every other time I do successfully resume from suspend by opening the lid, I get an Action forbidden error message. This doesn't usually happen when I press the Power button to suspend - only when I use the lid. Any clue as to a fix here? My guess as to what is happening here is that the lid close events are at times handled incorrectly - in particular, I figure that when I'm having trouble resuming my system is in fact in a suspend loop and is trying to suspend immediately after resuming. The Action forbidden messages seem to go along with this explanation - it would indicate that g-p-m is receiving erroneous lid events that cause issues with resuming from suspend. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- System doesn't always resume properly on lid open https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode
I see what you are saying - i810 is an inferior driver to intel, crash issues aside. However, at the same time, shipping a driver known to hard crash randomly upon doing such common things as logging out or suspending to RAM seems irresponsible. I feel that Ubuntu should go back to i810 as default for the Gutsy release - it worked in Feisty, and while it may have less features than intel, at least it doesn't hard crash regularly. *However*, Ubuntu could then push as an update to Gutsy a stub package which pushes the users to the intel driver once it is free of critical crashes. That way, we'll get the best of both worlds - Gutsy will ship with a stable driver by default rather than an unstable driver, and we could switch over with the stub package once the intel driver is fixed up to be as stable as i810. -- laptop hangs when switching video mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/127101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry for the lack of info in earlier posts... My video chipset is 945GM. [Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode
OK - that makes some sense to me. In that case, could this bug be mentioned in the release notes with instructions on switching to i810 for those who experience an intolerable number of crashes? I believe OpenSUSE had such a note in their 10.3 release notes and shipped both drivers with -intel as default, as Ubuntu will be doing. Also, is it possible to alter the gdm/kdm configuration to not reset the X-server on logout? This would make the issue occur far less in general use (it would be basically relegated to those who suspend-to-RAM often at that point). For me, the driver works fine unless the X-server is reset, at which point I get the crashes one out of every few times. Sorry if I sounded harsh at times regarding shipping with this bug - I'm just afraid of users installing Gutsy and having a heavily crash-prone system... -- laptop hangs when switching video mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/127101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode
OK - I've added a blurb to the release notes about the issue. If possible, sould some people test and make sure the graphical X setting tool can properly change the driver? I've had some problems with this, but it should work as it is a showcased feature in Gutsy. On 10/10/07, Bryce Harrington [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The release notes are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/RC. I think it's a good suggestion to mention this issue in the Caveats section, in a short and constructive manner. Would you mind taking a shot at creating an initial draft of the text to go in here? Given the plan of putting out a release note and fixing this in a post- release update, we need to approach this bug a little differently. First, we need to focus on finding regression-free fixes or workarounds. We will have made mention of the issue in the release notes, so it would not be good to put out a fix that risks just moving the bug to a new, unknown location. Second, I think we need to ensure when we apply a fix, we have a deep understanding of *why* it works; otherwise, we won't have confidence that we're truly fixing the root cause. I posted about this issue to the xorg@ mailing list last night, to get advice. Unfortunately, there's not been very little response. So far, the best attack angle we have are Juan Pablo's backtraces. These give tangible, deep information into the issue, that could possibly identify a real solution. I'm going to be focusing on this angle. I would encourage others who wish to help solve this issue to follow Juan Pablo's approach and try to also gain backtraces like his. unggnu, thanks for investigating the angle of removing the overlay fix. However it sounds like that is more a fix for bug 141063 than this one. Also, since presumably removing the fix would result in returning the original bug that it fixed, it couldn't be considered regression-free. Jose, it's quite interesting that enabling EXA seems to reduce the frequency of the issue, and that might provide a clue. However, EXA is another new technology with its own collection of issues, and given that we're dealing with issues from immature code, I don't think it's wise to solve it by adding in more immature code without having a deep understanding of why it makes it work. Also, if it requires dropping patch 120 from xserver, we'll get that regression for XAA users. Tim, if you can identify which config variable in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to switch, then other users could test that. However, it's hard to change gdm behavior without causing a regression somewhere, so this likely contains some regression risk as well. But it might be worthwhile to identify as a workaround, if we can get several of us to validate it. -- laptop hangs when switching video mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/127101 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. -- laptop hangs when switching video mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/127101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 145683] Re: Network manager crash with WPA
Since the patch, I am noticing that while NetworkManager doesn't seem to disappear from the system tray spontaneously as before, it does become non-operational (i.e. the nm-applet says No network Devices have been found). Thus, if the problem I'm experiencing is indeed a duplicate of this bug (which it was marked as), the bug is not in fact fixed. [Bug 71167] Re: installer and livecd should detect vmware mouse device and use the right driver
In Gutsy Beta 1, I am seeing this problem again with VMware Fusion 1.0 and 1.1b1. In particular, what is happening is that in addition to the vmmouse driver not being used by default, it isn't even *included* on the beta 1 cd. Thus, I had to download it from the repository and manually edit the xorg.conf to make it work. Could 1) the vmmouse driver be included on the CD 2) vmmouse be used by default on all VMware guests? I spent quite a while trying to figure out what was up with my mouse in Gutsy before finally discovering vmmouse (or the lack thereof). After manually installing vmmouse, the device works perfectly. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = New -- installer and livecd should detect vmware mouse device and use the right driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/71167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection
The issue still isn't fully fixed for me. On my MacBook (13.3, 1280x800, intel graphics), the fonts for the user id on the login screen and for application title bars are still gigantic. However, the rest of the fonts are OK, and restarting X once after booting up will resolve the issue with the title bars until the system is rebooted again. Seems like a different DPI is being used when X is started through the init process as opposed to through gdm AFTER the init process. Could someone fix this? Re: [Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in
Well, there isn't really a problem if idle dimming is enabled - in that case it dims properly to the idle brightness setting. That is, unless brightness is already set to a lower setting, in which case the brightness increases (but that's another bug). In any case, if some kind of patch can't be integrated, the whole auto-brightness change logic should be disabled in Gutsy - it's so incredibly buggy as to cause more problems than do good in its existing form. Tim On 10/4/07, Simon Ruggier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Your patch will only fix the bug when idle dimming is disabled. Re: [Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in
Yes - fixing that would require a previous brightness variable in the code. It would basically be checked, and then the brightness code would take it into account when exiting idle. I figure the best way to fix all these brightness problems would be to: 1. Do not use idle events when idle_on_ac is disabled on AC (or idle_on_batt on battery). 2. Store a previous brightness in the backlight struct and revert to this when we update the brightness to return from a dimmed state. 3. Check if brightness is less than idle brightness before dimming. If it is, leave it alone. If these three things are implemented, the brightness logic should be working as expected. My other patches fix the problems, but this seems like a more ideal way to do it. I may take a look, but I can't guarantee anything. I hope the devs get a patch committeed 7.10 final - this is a big regression for laptop users, and something that would probably be noticed by most users/reviewers on laptops. On 10/4/07, Simon Ruggier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The problem with idle dimming enabled would be when the user stops being idle. [Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in
Here is the patch I came up with. Basically, when the idle callback is called, this will stop it from changing the brightness if idle dimming is disabled. Hope this is suitable - I know one could suppress the idle callback from being called, but it seems that it is used for other things (gscreensaver, etc). If not, then that would be the preferred solution. ** Attachment added: gpm-backlight.c.diff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9690288/gpm-backlight.c.diff -- Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137598 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
