[Bug 1536837] [NEW] Severe performance regression in Infiniband or IPoIB

2016-01-21 Thread Timothy Pearson
Public bug reported:

When upgrading to the latest 4.4 test kernel from mainline development,
all IPoIB links showed a severe performance regression as compared with
kernel 4.2. The bandwidth of each link dropped from around 3Gbps to
around 3Mbps (3 orders of magnitude worse!); reverting to the 4.2 kernel
immediately fixed this problem.

The 4.3 kernel from Debian does not appear to suffer from this
regression. The regression shows up on both IB ports of the Mellanox
MT25208 controller. Other hardware has not been tested.

[Bug 297707] Re: DHCP feature for network-manager-openvpn with TAP required

2014-11-27 Thread Timothy Pearson
Rather surprised this still isn't fixed 6 *years* later. All of my

rather bad impression of Linux to these users.

And no, using the OpenVPN DHCP server is not an option for various

[Bug 1379932] [NEW] Synaptic attempts to use pkexec when launched under the Trinity Desktop Environment

2014-10-10 Thread Timothy Pearson
Public bug reported:

Synaptic incorrectly attempts to use pkexec when launched under the XDG-
recognized Trinity Desktop Environment. There is an override already
present in Synaptic for KDE users in the file /usr/share/applications
/synaptic-kde.desktop; simply adding another copy of that file named
/usr/share/applications/synaptic-tde.desktop with the KDE keys contained
therein changed to TDE would fix this issue. Furthermore
/usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop needs to have ;TDE appended
to the NotShowIn line.

As precedent for special treatment has already been set for KDE I see no
reason why this could not be done for TDE as well.

Thanks!

2014-04-15 Thread Timothy Pearson
For anyone following, the referenced patch is not available in kernel
3.8. 3.11 does contain the patch.

However, after upgrading, analog capture still does not work. Instead,
on switching capture channels, I see capture write error (DMA or IRQ
trouble?) in dmesg and the capture application either exits or hangs.

With kernel 3.11 on Ubuntu 12.04:

[Bug 985202] Re: libx11 causes kwin to crash on login (over NX protocol)

This bug also affects the Trinity Desktop Environment. I suspect that
all XRandR-aware programs will crash if active when an XRandR change
event is received and processed via XRRUpdateConfiguration() on certain
Xorg drivers.

For the record, downgrading xlibs and associated packages to their
respective Oneiric versions did resolve the problem for now.

[Bug 644720] [NEW] Dragging QIconViewItems in QIconView widgets leaves garbage trails on screen

2010-09-21 Thread Timothy Pearson
Public bug reported:

Dragging QIconViewItems in QIconView widgets leaves garbage trails on
screen. This is especially obnoxious when moving the icons at high or
very low speeds.

I have traced the problem to kubuntu_09_flickerfree_qiconview.diff in

a far worse problem than slight icon flickering.

[Bug 438962] Re: upstart/mountall does not boot after mounting crypto disks

2009-10-01 Thread Timothy Pearson
Don't know if this will help you track it down, but I have several
identical computers, each running an identical imaged Karmic
installation. One of them is unaffected by this bug, and the other two
will not boot no matter what I do--including re-imaging from the working
one. (???)

Could the BIOS configuration/version have any role in this?

[Bug 411248] Re: openoffice file corruption when using jungledisk

2009-08-10 Thread Timothy Pearson
I am now seeing this on my cifs mounted Documents directory. I imagine
that the same bug is probably at work here, and it affects ods
(spreadsheet) files as well.

Out of curiosity, when your files are ruined, do they grow really,
really large (i.e. a file that was originally 10Kb is now 1Mb)?

Here is an example of the problem...the only thing I did to break the
file was resave it to my cifs mounted Documents directory.

Looking closely at the broken file (it is, after all, a Zip archive), it
looks like there are multiple copies of manifest.xml instead of the
actual content XML files.

Chris,

I'm not convinced it is only in the FUSE layer--why does it also show up
in CIFS mounts (that don't use FUSE)?

Does OOo use any special file access methods/file attributes that are
being stripped off by non-UNIX mount points?

[Bug 411248] Re: openoffice file corruption when using jungledisk or cifs

2009-08-10 Thread Timothy Pearson
I am using Samba 2:3.4.0-1ubuntu2 on the server, and 2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3.1
on the client. (The server is an up-to-date Karmic machine, and the
client is an up-to-date Jaunty machine).

This only showed up when I moved from Windows to Linux as the server
(the client CIFS mounting stayed the same). Only OpenOffice seems to be
affected, all other apps that I have tried work perfectly with the files
in the CIFS mounted directory.

[Bug 357556] Re: phosphor crashed with SIGSEGV in fileno_unlocked()

2009-06-29 Thread Timothy Pearson
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xscreensaver

This happens with all the computers that I have, both under Intrepid and
under Jaunty. The symptom is that after the screensaver has been
running for a short time (between 30 seconds and half an hour), the
screen will go black and no longer run the screensaver. Unlocking the
screen and re-locking the screen (to restart the screensaver) causes the
screensaver to display normally for the same period of time, and then
once again crash and go back to a black screen.

+ A minimal patch has been created to fix the problem. Since this bug
+ makes the Phosphor screensaver unusable as-is, and this is not a core
+ component, I am requesting a stable version update for this package.
+
+ The worst case scenario is that this patch causes a regression in
+ Phosphor, which does not work as is, so the risk is minimal.

[Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu

2009-06-24 Thread Timothy Pearson
Hey, sorry for the lack of progress on this bug, but my servers were
fried by a lightning-related EMP on Friday (June 19) and therefore I've
been unable to do anything since then. ( more details are on a temporary
website at http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net )

However, before that time, it was decided that at the very least the
packages need to be renamed to reflect the change from Fedora directory
server to 389 directory server. That is my top priority--once I can get
at my servers again, that is!!

[Bug 27463] Re: [needs-packaging] Fedora Directory Server for Ubuntu

2009-06-11 Thread Timothy Pearson
I will try to build the Jaunty packages ASAP, but first there is a
potential REVU issue--they seem to want .orig.tar.gz files, and I need
to go through and test build from original sources. That process might
take some time, and I won't be able to get to the Jaunty packages until
that is complete.

The build-deps may not be 100% correct for the Intrepid packages, but
Karmic should be pretty close. Remember that the PPA build systems
start with a blank system and pull in the build-dep packages, so if it
builds under Intrepid and Karmic that means that there is a different
dependency somewhere that is only needed under Jaunty.

[Bug 159356] Re: System freeze on high memory usage

2009-06-11 Thread Timothy Pearson
This has also happened to me on many occasions. I have a Kubuntu 9.04
server at the office that has 24GB of main memory, so there is no swap
space defined. When an application goes haywire and takes all the main
memory (e.g. VMWare), the offending process is never terminated, the
mouse pointer locks up, and all attempts at a remote SSH session fail--
the server has to be forcibly restarted.

This is a critical bug!

[Bug 289299] Re: winbind (samba 3.2) does not populate pw_gecos information for domain users

2009-03-27 Thread Timothy Pearson
Yes, I reproduced it in Jaunty. No, it is not fixed as of 03/27/09. In
fact, I check the status of this bug every day when my computer screen
locks and my full name does not show up on the login screen (KDE3.5
kdesktoplock uses an identical mechanism to retrieve the user's full
name). ;-)

If you would like any additional debugging information I would be happy
to provide it.

Thanks!

** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed
