[Bug 1727301] Re: 229-4ubuntu20 added ARP option breaks existing bonding interfaces

2017-10-26 Thread Tobias Wolf
We are also affected by this suddenly after systemd upgrade the network
was gone, had to go in via serial console.

We are only using networkd because Martin Pitt said in the run-up to the
16.04 release that networkd would be supported and to be used in the
next LTS release.

[Bug 1714933] [NEW] Xenial: Please roll SRU with upstream fix for networkd to "accept colons in network interface names"

2017-09-04 Thread Tobias Wolf
Public bug reported:

PR: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/5117

issue: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/4057

Before the networkd from 231 was backported, it was possible to use
interface alias names that contained a colon, e.g. eth0:1. This is
commonly used to make legacy tools like "ifconfig" work, because they
*expect* a colon in the interface name.

Martin told me to file a bug for this.

Merging networkd from 231 lead to a regression where valid configs were
not accepted anymore after the backport. Please merge that fix for the
regression.

[Bug 1586626] [NEW] RANDOM_DELAY in crontab maps to wrong property AccuracySec instead of the correct RandomizedDelaySec

2016-05-28 Thread Tobias Wolf
Public bug reported:

The AccuracySec property in systemd is used to aggregate timer events
close together to produce less wake-ups of the system. What was added in
systemd is the RandomizedDelaySec property, which should be used
instead.

This is about the /lib/systemd/system-generators/systemd-crontab-
generator script.

Below see the extract of the man page.

   AccuracySec=
Specify the accuracy the timer shall elapse with.
Defaults to 1min. The timer is scheduled to elapse
within a time window starting with the time specified
   in OnCalendar=, OnActiveSec=, OnBootSec=,
   OnStartupSec=, OnUnitActiveSec= or OnUnitInactiveSec=
and ending the time configured with AccuracySec=
later. Within this time window, the expiry time will
be placed at a host-specific, randomized, but stable
position that is synchronized between all local timer
units. This is done in order to optimize power
consumption to suppress unnecessary CPU wake-ups. To
get best accuracy, set this option to 1us. Note that
the timer is still subject to the timer slack
   configured via systemd-system.conf(5)'s
TimerSlackNSec= setting. See prctl(2) for details. To
optimize power consumption, make sure to set this
value as high as possible and as low as necessary.

   RandomizedDelaySec=
Delay the timer by a randomly selected, evenly
distributed amount of time between 0 and the specified
time value. Defaults to 0, indicating that no
randomized delay shall be applied. Each timer unit
will determine this delay randomly each time it is
started, and the delay will simply be added on top of
the next determined elapsing time. This is useful to
stretch dispatching of similarly configured timer
events over a certain amount time, to avoid that they
all fire at the same time, possibly resulting in
resource congestion. Note the relation to AccuracySec=
above: the latter allows the service manager to
coalesce timer events within a specified time range in
order to minimize wakeups, the former does the
opposite: it stretches timer events over a time range,
to make it unlikely that they fire simultaneously. If
RandomizedDelaySec= and AccuracySec= are used in
conjunction, first the randomized delay is added, and
then the result is possibly further shifted to
coalesce it with other timer events happening on the
system. As mentioned above AccuracySec= defaults to
   1min and RandomizedDelaySec= to 0, thus encouraging
coalescing of timer events. In order to optimally
stretch timer events over a certain range of time,
make sure to set RandomizedDelaySec= to a higher
   value, and AccuracySec=1us.

[Bug 1098298] Re: NetworkManager fails to detect link status change -- Intel 82577LM e1000e

2013-02-17 Thread Tobias Wolf
I see this too. NM stuck at "unplugged".

The thing is I only load e1000e on demand with modprobe because I
normally don't need Ethernet and want to conserve the few milliwatts
it's using when loaded.

So now when I load the module dmesg and NM never pick up link state.
mii-tool does though.

[Bug 1120660] Re: Kernel Panic when running 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' ?

2013-02-11 Thread Tobias Wolf
James, I cannot confitm that this fixes the issue.

Manually creating it with mkdir /var/log/upstart and doing telinit u
still panicked the kernel.

Then I put mkdir /var/log/upstart into /etc/rc.local and it still
panicked after a reboot.

Is it that the creation happens too late?

[Bug 1120660] Re: Kernel Panic when running 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' ?

2013-02-10 Thread Tobias Wolf
I get this too and have narrowed it down to the re-exec of upstart in
some packages dpkg postinst scripts.

To trigger the panic you can just run "sudo telinit u"

When I removed the Upstart rexec lines from libc6 and libjson0 postinst
the dpkg configure went through.

** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => upstart (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

- Recently, I am seeing a few kernel panics.
+ Recently, I am seeing a few kernel panics. [ Assertion failed in
+ log_serialise ]

The latest one happens when asked to run E: dpkg was interrupted, you
must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

I've also seen them when trying to change compiz settings.

They seem to have started a couple of days ago in the middle of an
upgrade, I guess during some Xorg and/or nvidia related upgrades.

However, it happens now each and every time when running 'sudo dpkg
  --configure -a'.

[Bug 1064239] [NEW] postproc gstreamer elements were useful

2012-10-09 Thread Tobias Wolf
Public bug reported:

The postproc-tempnoise Gstreamer element was quite useful to me for a
webcam script. It disappeared now.

The Changelog says it was deprecated upstream and so the dependency was
removed. But if it works still in spite of the deprecation could the dep
be readdded again in the meantime?

For some reason this plugin is not shipped anymore even though the build

I think the media-keys module of gnome-settings-daemons is affected.

Here, none of the media-keys bindings listed under ‹ org.gnome.settings-
daemon.plugins.media-keys › work.

Are you using the ricotz Gnome3 PPA?

The problem with that is that the changes in this cycle are *very* hit-
and-miss. Some things are cool, but some things are just baffling.

[Bug 899828] Re: no chromium-daily-ppa for Precise Pangolin / 12.04

2012-07-15 Thread Tobias Wolf
Someone with solid knowledge of Chromium packaging has to review the old
packagaging against what changed in chromium upstream meanwhile. Debian
has pkg-chromium that tracks this but they are a little behind as well.

Packaging chromium daily means having to follow chromium development to
some degree. This is someting that ~fta used to do.

I cannot do this, I’m already struggling to keep it building and I only
do this manually every few weeks. And, as mentioned I also change
keyboard shortcuts in the code because that is the only way to change
them.

[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in "Save Screenshot" window.

2012-03-28 Thread Tobias Wolf
Anyone who wants to bring the point of accessibility to upstreams
attention, please add it here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=669629

Please note, that in Gnome Shell you get a white flash in addition to
the camera shutter sound. Perhaps this doesn’t happen in classic mode.
If so please add this.

The issue of discoverability was raised there too, but apparently
upstream thinks that before, doing screenshots was work and now there’s
less work involved. I cannot follow the logic, but the logic is put
forward here:

[Bug 954799] Re: unable to use 5.1 with an external trust sound card

2012-03-17 Thread Tobias Wolf
I found the solution to the problem, even though I think it is not as
accessible as it should be:

Install package "paman" (some advanced tools for pulseaudio), then
launch "pulseaudio volume control" (at least I assume thats the english
name) und go to the tab "configuration" where you'll find the sound
setting you're accustomed to (carefull, changing the mode sets volume to
maximum, so better don't be playing loud music while changing the
option...)

I hope that will be of any help.

[Bug 844044] Re: Unity Greeter - Add Network Login option

2012-03-07 Thread Tobias Wolf
Just don’t call it »Other«.

With out LDAP setup epople don’t realize that a bit of white text
»Other« is where they log in. In particular when it is not part of a
list, where it could be inferred from context. If there’s only »Guest«
and »Other« it looks really bad.

Personally I would be fine with »Network Login« and »Network Password«,
but just »Login« and »Password« would work too.

No, sorry, that looks really bad. Then you only get "Other" and "Guest"

Before you got the "cached" users or frequently logged in users *and*
the item "Other".

Can you make it possible to somehow achieve the old behaviour?

To answer my own question, in gnome-control-center git there are slots for
*six* keybindings now!
That doesn’t sound like a very thought-out strategy to map six bindings only to
avoid that one little dialog.

And, to wit, we don’t have the new gnome-settings-daemon with media-
keys, we’re stuck with the old system.

If we add a keystroke for copy to clipboard we would have:

[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in "Save Screenshot" window.

2012-02-09 Thread Tobias Wolf
Sebastien, when there is a need to take a series of screenshots and use
them further right away, going through the g-s desktop app would require
an order of magnitude more steps. The previous system was really quite
efficient.

It’s not even possible to get the old behaviour back through the use of
modified keybindings, because with -i you get two windows. The first
window is unnecessary, the second OTOH window is helpful.

I think this should be escalated to upstream to challenge the notion
that silently putting uninformatively named files into an unseen folder
is a good idea. It just creates confusion and unnecessary work.

That this behaviour trips people up is evidenced by 6 dupes within one

Well, it’s debatable if the new behaviour makes sense. I don’t like it
personally, in particular because I keep camera photos in my Pictures

Luckily there’s a Gsettings key for that, but who discovers that?

GNOME Screenshot 3.3.2 - 6th February 2012

Here, »headless« means that no dialog is shown anymore. The screenshots are
placed in your »Pictures« folder silently.
You can choose another folder via GSettings, but you cannot show the dialog.
The only way to get that is to start gnome-screenshot with -i.

[Bug 921082] Re: after touchpad movement and stop, pointer continues in same direction at a steady pace

Ugh, at least with the Alps touchpad on my Thinkpad X301 the new cursor

that possible at all?

[Bug 921082] Re: after touchpad movement and stop, pointer continues in same direction at a steady pace

2012-01-26 Thread Tobias Wolf
This is Trackstick Emulation mode, and it’s super-annoying. I’ve read
«man synaptics» up-and-down and there is no clear way to disable this.
Is it FingerPress? To what level do I have to set it to disable? 256?

There are other settings that have been introduced and set zto default.
And also there are settings that have been disabled. Before the upgrade
you could coast after scrolling, giving you kinetic-like scrolling
behaviour. This is not active anymore.

And, when I scroll down, the scrolled pane sometimes jumps /up/ a
certain distance.

Right now it feels really awkward to use the touchpad (Alps here).

[Bug 829491] Re: indicator-applet version 0.4.12-0ubuntu1 failed to build in oneiric

2011-09-14 Thread Tobias Wolf
This is the first time I’ve been holding back on upgrading to Ubuntu+1
early to do thorough testing. I just don’t want to deal with unfinished
crapola. Keybuk wrote about this. Too many half-baked features and
premature bitrot.

[Bug 829491] Re: indicator-applet version 0.4.12-0ubuntu1 failed to build in oneiric

2011-09-14 Thread Tobias Wolf
Come on, man. You can’t be serious.

There are many people who are neither ready for Gnome Shell nor Unity yet.
Why can’t I get keep my trusted setup and still get the benefit of the updated
apps?

This whole indicator thing took so much development effort to get right,
to integrate into gnome-panel. It finally worked properly.

Just throwing it out now is way to early, IMO. I’m really miffed by
this. In particular Ted Gould dropping the ball.

[Bug 724369] Re: Port to gnome-panel 3 and gtk 3

2011-09-07 Thread Tobias Wolf
So, I’ve compiled Ted’s branch from source and had to move around the
.panel-applet files because they were being put into the old directory.
After that I could add the indicators to the panel but they only
displayed "No indicators" and when running the indicators from the
terminal they refused loading with "No watchers".

I guess this needs more work still?
