[Bug 549741] Re: [Dell Latitude 131L] keyboard not recognized properly; logs fill up with messages
hi guys, Well now, that is one old bug I reported. The 'powerd down, remove battery, restart it all' workaround didn't quite fix it for me but it was no big deal otherwise. And since the laptop had died since then I have no problem if we close this bug. cheers Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549741 Title: [Dell Latitude 131L] keyboard not recognized properly; logs fill up with messages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/549741/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1595935] Re: Suspend not working on Ubuntu 16.04
hi again Christopher, Found some time to test various kernels as indicated. Here are the results in correct chronological order: 0) 15.10 / kernel 4.2.0: last known good configuration 1) 16.04 / kernel 4.4.0: error found, bug reported then tested: 2) v4.6-rc7-wily / 4.6.0: works as expected 3) v4.5-wily / 4.5.0: error found 4) v4.5.7-wily / 4.5.7: works as expected 5) v4.5-4-yakkety / 4.5.4: works as expected 6) v4.5-2-wily / 4.5.2: works as expected 7) v4.5-1-wily / 4.5.1: works as expected My conclusion would be that the error was introduced in 4.4.0, persisted in 4.5.0 but got fixed in 4.5.1. If you want me to test any versions between 4.2.0 and 4.4.0, let me know. For now I'll be running one of the higher versions that work for me as daily driver. cheers Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1595935 Title: Suspend not working on Ubuntu 16.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1595935/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1595935] Re: Suspend not working on Ubuntu 16.04
Hi Christopher, I noticed the tag ;bios-outdated-a10'. I'm aware of the newer bios being available, but although Dell offers this laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled and supported they somehow don't seem to offer a bios update that is not windoze dependent :-( Downloaded kernel 4.6-rc7 from mainline as in your instructions and things are working fine. I can manually suspend and resume and when I close the lid it goes to sleep nicely. Fan cuts out, hdd spins down. When opening the lid I'm back where I was, so all works as it should. Fan is a lot quieter too, so I guess it's using less power now as well. regards Tom ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream-4.6-rc7 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1595935 Title: Suspend not working on Ubuntu 16.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1595935/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

hi Logging was already on as requested, I can clear the log and get myself invitations for events in several calendars associated with different mail addresses. No problemo. [Bug 549741] Re: [Dell Latitude 131L] keyboard not recognized properly; logs fill up with messages
hi Chris, Yup, it does still happen. I just checked and it's a constant 4 messages per second filling up the logs. I can do the workaround as described above in #72 which may or may not make it go away for a while. Right now I'm not in a position to go testing alternative kernels. [Bug 1072864]
Update: Calendar caching issue was solved by moving to Lightning-extension 1.9.1. The problem with the sender address when sending invites or when responding to one has gone worse though. I can/do now only send invitations and replies from one of the wrongly constructed (by Lightning) email addresses. This causes confusion for the receiving persons. Also I have had to make aliases in order to intercept mails and responses sent to the wrong address. By now I'm running Tbird 23.0 (from the MozillaTeam PPA over at Launchpad) in order to try Lightning 2.5b2 (from Mozilla). Unfortunately this still does not solve the issues I'm having. [Bug 1095001] Re: [regression] compiz spends 31% of its CPU time in regexec()
Been using this fix for about a week now. The whole GUI is a lot more responsive. It seems to solve a lot of the lag / hangs in accessing menus and especially when working in LO Calc (mainly when changing cell formats in pretty large worksheets with a lot of formulas). I do still get some hangs within Calc when switching from one sheet to another; either through the menu or through the bar. Those hangs are always accompanier by intensive disc access. When I check the system monitor there is no or hardly any swap file. [Bug 1072864]
Update: Is someone actually reading this? Lightning is virtually unusable now. Sending invitations and confirmations are both done with wrongly constructed sender addresses. The Outlook compatibility option stopped working as a workaround. Also the local caching is broken as is the relation email address - calendar. All in all this means I get appointments placed in the wrong calendars, confirmations and updates are not processed and the whole of Tbird gets unworkably slow due to the constant on line updating. I'm now going to see how either Evolution or Outlook perform. Lightning is obviously severely broken in several essential functions (caldav, caching, tbird integration, multiple calendars) and no one picks up on it. update: I just found out that when I tick the 'Support Outlook and Outlook 2000/XP' box when accepting an invitation, the confirmation includes just me. [Bug 1072864] [NEW] Lightning confuses usernames for calendars and mailaccounts
Public bug reported: This bug report copied from the one I just filed over at bugzilla.mozilla.org. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=806510 cheers Tom === hi guys, New here but active on Launchpad for some time. Ubuntu user, running 12.04 amd64, updated daily so up to date. Been using Tbird and Lightning happily for 5 years now. Recently things have degraded here and there. I'm using 3 calendars on a Sogo-server, 2 of them for myself and one a group-calendar called 'sales'. The ones for myself are 'personal' and 'business'. All calendars are linked to their own, different email addresses in two different domains: - personal @ myname.com - me.business @ company.com - sales @ company.com (This in itself has some issues, but I'll file another bug report on that.) The accounts have usernames that differ from those in the mail addresses, this is due to my provider's way of managing domains and users: - myname_com_personal (can be followed by @ provider.org but not really necessary) - company_com_mebusiness (same) - company_com_sales (same) Actual results: Recently Lightning started messing up usernames when sending out invitations and confirmations. I suspect this was when we recieved 1.8 some weeks ago. It used to use the correct email addresses as given for the calendars. Now it constructs its own from the username as given for accessing the calendars and the domain that belongs to the original mail address, like - company_com_mebusiness @ company.com This is NOT as it should be since that email address does not exist. Replies and invitations either never arrive or fall into a catch-all mailbox (info @ company.com) and bother the people that manage that box. Expected results: All invitations and confirmations should use the email address that is specified as belonging to that particular calendar. Lightning must be able to handle multiple calendars, using the correctly given data for each email address, useraccount and password combination. ** Affects: lightning-extension Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: lightning-extension (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Bug watch added: Mozilla Bugzilla #806510 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=806510 ** Also affects: lightning-extension via https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=806510 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1072864 Title: Lightning confuses usernames for calendars and mailaccounts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightning-extension/+bug/1072864/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

While I do understand the reasoning behind this 'feature' and I do think it would be good for Ubuntu, Linux and Open Source as a whole if more funding comes its way, the issues associated with the shopping lens are worrying me. Combine that with some unavoidable bugs in the new code and user disappointment is guaranteed. Oh, forgot to mention this: once an event is placed in the wrong calendar, I can't move it to the right one. I did try to copy/paste it and then delete the original event, but in doing so I suddenly became organizer of the new copied event. [Bug 966002] Re: Lightning writes events to wrong calendar (Sogo-server, Caldav)
update I now do have a mailbox for the sales@... account and it is bound to the sales-calendar as it should. Makes no difference though: there is no telling to what calendars / accounts an incoming invitation will be related. Imagine this scenario: I make an appointment to see a customer and add it to the sales calendar. Then I invite myself and a colleague to the event so we have it in our own schedules. Let's assume the invitation actually lands in my business calendar, often it does not. Then my colleague (or me) gets a call from the customer to reschedule the meeting. So he changes the date and time, leaving all other aspects as they were. He has access to the sales-account too, through the web interface.. The modified event now suddenly shows up in my home calendar although when opening I can see it is still aimed at my business email, which is bound to the business calendar. I can accept or decline the event, but no way can I select the right calendar. Setting that should be unnecessary anyway because the mail address determines the calendar, but every once in a while you get an private invitation sent to your business mail. OK, no worries, just open the event and select another agenda (like you do when creating a new event). Nope, that option is not there. I can only see some details and declare attendance but nothing else. My wife is using Tbird and Lightning too, on a Win pc. She has no account on the business Sogo-box and uses a local calendar. Whenever she sends me invitations for private events, they arrive as mails with an .ics attachment. Lightning handles these in pretty good order, giving me the choice in which calendar to place the event (even though it should make a selection by itself based on the recipient's mail address. I might always change that later). Again: this may very well be an issue that has its root cause(s) in Sogo, but it did work until recently and we haven't touched the server but there were updates to Lightning. Some colleagues are starting to pester me into buying Exchange. I won't, but truth is this does not work well for us at the moment. cheers Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/966002 Title: Lightning writes events to wrong calendar (Sogo-server, Caldav) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightning-extension/+bug/966002/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 966002] [NEW] Lightning writes events to wrong calendar (Sogo-server, Caldav)
Public bug reported: hi guys, I've been using Tbird plus Lightning for years, very happy with it. In this setup I have had 2 calendars: - private. this is bound to my private email address. (private events) - business. this is bound to my business email address. (business events) When receiving invitations Lightning would usually ask what calendar the appointment needed to go in, sometimes it would not. I think it can decide by the mail address, which is logical, but maybe I would get a private invitation in my business mail. Anyway, I could select the right calendar. A couple of weeks ago I switched from local calendars to a private Sogo server using Caldav protocol. I now have 3 remote calendars: - private. this is bound to my private email address - business. this is bound to my business email address - sales, this is bound to a 'sales@...' email address. I have no mailbox for this account in Tbird. The sales calendar is used to dispatch work items to team members. Anyone can see the items in it, only I can change them. By inviting colleagues (and/or myself) to an event it pops up in their own calendar and they know when to appear at a customer's. This allows me to keep overview of the sales events and also keep my own calendars reasonably clean. So far, so good. Since a couple of day I've noticed that invitations and changes to existing events are not appearing in the correct calendars any more. Whatever I do, they all land in the private calendar. I've tried modifying events from within Tbird / Lightning and from the Sogo web-interface (logging in under the sales-account). Invitations and updates are correctly addressed, but still appear in the same, usually wrong, calendar. Again: this goes for both new events as for existing ones that were booked correctly before. Change the date or time and the updated event appears in the wrong calendar. The may, of course, be an issue server side, but since that server has been stable for about 2 months and Lightning has had updates recently, I suspect this is a bug in Lightning. I'm running Oneiric amd64, updated daily. Re: [Bug 898344] Re: A4 paper size incorrect in HP c7200
hi Till, Sorry for not responding earlier, things are very busy over here. I've been using a workaround for a while, until I had to do some maintenance on my wife's pc. She spends a lot of time on the Dark Side (vista) so that gave me the opportunity to separate updates to LibreOffice, Cups and HP-Lip and test. To my surprise I could not replicate the issue on that pc. So I decided to delete the C7200 printer on my system and add it again from scratch. Guess what? Issue gone. Can't be sure what caused this now, but happy I can rely on my printer again. It may have had to do with adding the device from HPLip or from Cups. You can close this bug if you want. Re: [Bug 898344] Re: A4 paper size incorrect in HP c7200
Hi Til, I tried the other paper sizes (small margin and borderless) but no result. Playing around with settings for duplexer (installed / not installed) and duplex printing (on / off) does not make any difference either. Then yesterday I got updates to both Cups and HPLip, I tried today but got the same. A4 on the c7200 defaults to 294 x 210, no (A4). Mind you: the duplexer is installed, always was, but I hardly ever print double sided. These documents have been coming out correctly until about a week ago, maybe ten days. I feel this does not have much to do with how HP handles papaer sizes and printing margins, I would have come across that long ago. In fact if it weren't for Ubuntu, Cups and HPLip I would have returned this device years ago, let's say about a week after purchase. The HP supplied Win software sucks *very big time*, no matter what version. [Bug 897605] Re: Letter o replaced by apostrophe on printout
hi guys I have a similar problem when printing pdf's. They come out well when printed from LibreOffice, but in the exported pdf documents some characters are dropped and replaced by small empty square boxes. It seems to happen randomly between documents, however in one documents it's always the same characters. They look perfect on screen. When I edit an existing document and save it under a new name (like monthly invoices) the dropped character changes. I can not relate this to a specific template, layout or something that was originally made in another text processor. [Bug 898344] [NEW] A4 paper size incorrect in HP c7200
Public bug reported: hi guys, Oneiric amd64, Dell Latitude 131L, daily updates. I'm having a weird issue when printing that seems to have appeared sometime last week. Every other couple of days I'm printing a set of documents for my customers. These have not been edited for several months. So far printing from LibreOffice everything went correctly. Yesterday I found that the top and bottom 1cm of my prints get cut off. My printers are HP LJ2500, PS c7200, PS4500 or Samsung clx3175 depending on my location. I found out that the problem seems to be confined to the c7200. All printers are set up for A4 paper, so are the documents' page sizes. When I go to the print menu, I see the paper sizes next to the little preview on the left. In most cases it is correctly marked as 297 x 210 (A4). When choosing the c7200 however the paper size changes to 294 x 210. No (A4) indicated either. These documents have very small margins, as close I can get to no margin at all (there is a banner at top and bottom). However I've checked with a newly created, completely blank document in LO Write and it behaves the same way. Opening a fresh document in Calc and setting it to A4 gives weird paper sizes for all printers but the LJ2500. There were updates to CUPS last week, I'm figuring that somewhere along the line the definition of A4 in the driver for the c7200 got messed up. It really should be 210 x 297, not 294. Let me know if you need more information. cheers Tom ** Affects: cups (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/898344 Title: A4 paper size incorrect in HP c7200 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/898344/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 871268] Re: b43fwcutter / firmware-b43-installer fails on in-place upgrade
update Did three inplace upgrades to Oneiric over the last days, all of them on machines that run wifi only. They all failed in exactly the same way, so setting to confirmed, The new release is found and all the packages are downloaded correctly. Obviously the wifi cards are then disabled pretty early in the upgrade process, and do not come back on until after reboot. Unfortunately there are some packages that require internet access during install, but without wifi, no joy. Packages I've seen so far: b43-fwcutter, flashplugin and and their installers. In itself these are not deadly, but the failures do mean that the install process bombs out with an error report and does not execute the final steps (cleanup and reboot). I can do this by hand, which is a bit tedious, and then still need to fix some things that are not set correctly like themes. Reinstalling the wifi card means hooking up the pc to a wired lan, which not everyone had available anymore, or knows how to (really...) For many people this will not be acceptable. It should work out of the box, and I think that it is well possible to fix this issue. The wifi should be available for packages that need internet access during install, so either bring up the wifi first, or take it down last. regards Tom ** Summary changed: - b43fwcutter / firmware-b43-installer fails on in-place upgrade + ONEIRIC fails on in-place upgrade over wifi -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871268 Title: ONEIRIC fails on in-place upgrade over wifi To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/871268/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: hi guys, Did an in-place upgrade from Natty amd64 today on my Dell Latitude 131L. Two failures: b43fwcutter and flashplugin-installer. After plugging in a lan wire I could easily reinstall b43fwcutter and firmware-b43-installer which restored my wifi in seconds. I noticed the installer looks for the correct firmware online. Now if is first takes down the current driver and disables my internet access, logically it would fail to find any. The solution here would be to change the order of things: look for the correct components online first, then take down the active driver, replace it and bring up the wifi again with the new version. Because of this relatively small hickup, the upgrade bombed out before cleaning up properly. I rebooted into Oneiric just fine, and used Janitor to remove most Natty leftovers. [Bug 420992] Re: Cannot install grub2 on dmraid with text-mode installer
update Installed Oneiric from CD onto one of my machines with dmraid (theone with the Promise Fasttrak100 chipset). No luck, but it did come up with a screen asking me where I would like to see grub. At that moment I was happy and confident things would go right, since the pull down menu showed all the right entries. I chose /dev/mapper/pcb_jcchiiab, which is the raid set's mbr as opposed to one of the partitions. The installer obliged -it seemed- and finished without further messages. Alas, after rebooting I got a grub shell prompt. It seems the installation did not replace the part of grub living in the MBR, so it does not load the stage that actually boots my OS. I'll try and get into a root shell and reinstall manually, that did help me out before. Will report back and let you know. cheers Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/420992 Title: Cannot install grub2 on dmraid with text-mode installer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/420992/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Nope, no kpartx installed. Tried booting with the options you gave me, saw about 10 seconds and hundreds of udev messages flash by and then it froze. Will try again tomorrow and see if I can get past that point. Attaching the most recent log files I found. Re: [Bug 631795] Re: [LUCID, MAVERICK, NATTY] do not boot reliably on dmraid set
hi Phillip, Found some time to test the second machine as well (intel chipset, 2 discs in mirrored set). Booted off a Natty daily usb (looking nice!) in order to have Gparted 0.7 which handles dmraid correctly. Shrunk / fs and formatted to ext4. Created an ext4 primary partition to be used as /home. Created an ext4 primary partition to be used as DATA. Created a swap space as an extended partition. No spearate /boot, no Windows dual boot. Shutdown, then booted Maverick Server 32bit from usb-stick. Entire install went ok, selected manual partition and told it the corerct fs and mount points. Didn't format, because that was already done and Maverick comes with Gparted 0.6x. Selected minimal system and no applications yet. There were no glitches and Grub did install itself correctly on the raid, not one of the individual disks. Exactly like you said it should. Rebooted, got the familiar udev messages and. failed to mount /home. Chose Skip and could log in ok. Rebooted, same story. Will try the same boot options with udev logging like you asked for the other machine and report back. cheers Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631795 Title: [LUCID, MAVERICK, NATTY] udev has a race condition with device mapper devices -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 631795] Re: [LUCID, MAVERICK] do not boot reliably on dmraid set
Update: Yesterday I had to try some combo of software that would not install on Lucid together. So I got adventurous and did a two-stage upgrade of my testing system from Lucid to Maverick and then on to Natty. This is the machine with the Intel chipset as mentioned in post #45. Of course Grub did not install on the right device twice, so I had to boot off an USB-stick to rescue a broken system and reinstall it manually from a root shell. (Where can I log a bug report on that? Grub, grub installer or Ubiquity? The server install CD does not use a GUI.) Anyway, in all cases the error messages during booting remain, so I can report that this issue is also present in Natty. The Intel machine is running on Natty now, giving the usual complaints during boot (similar to those in post #66). The machine with the Promise chipset fails to mount its file systems every time, leaving it useless for now. Have resorted to XP which runs ok, so no hardware issue. If there's anything I need to check and report back here, let me know. cheers Tom ** Summary changed: - [LUCID, MAVERICK] do not boot reliably on dmraid set + [LUCID, MAVERICK, NATTY] do not boot reliably on dmraid set -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631795 Title: [LUCID, MAVERICK, NATTY] do not boot reliably on dmraid set -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 420992] Re: Cannot install grub2 on dmraid with text-mode installer
Update: See also my post in LP:631795. Yesterday I had to try some combo of software that would not install on Lucid together. So I got adventurous and did a two-stage upgrade of my testing system from Lucid to Maverick and then on to Natty. This is the machine with an Intel chipset and 2 disks in mirror set. (The other one has a Promise Fasttrack and 2 discs in a striped set.) Grub did not install on the right device twice, so I had to boot off an USB-stick to rescue a broken system and reinstall it manually from a root shell. That fixed it for me, but I would have expected the installer to - find the active raid set (I did activate it manually earlier on in the process) - use the existing configuration (this was an upgrade) - ask me where to boot from (well it sort of did, but whatever I pointed it to, it went back to /sda) As things are now Grub / Grub-installer has been breaking installations on dmraid reliably in Lucid, Maverick and Natty. I think this may be related to several issues in Gparted and dmraid on same machines where name convention for devices and partitions is not consistent. If there's anything I need to check and report back here, let me know. cheers Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/420992 Title: Cannot install grub2 on dmraid with text-mode installer -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 631795] Re: [LUCID, MAVERICK, NATTY] do not boot reliably on dmraid set
hi Phillip, This machine (the intel chipset one) has 2 discs in raid1, so a mirrored set. From Lucid to Maverick was an inplace upgrade through upgrade manager. That left the machine non bootable so I put a USB stick in and booted Natty server (32-bits). Installed Natty from the stick but without formatting existing partitions. Same result: not booting, so again booting from USB, rescue a broken system, drop into a root shell, grub-install on /dev/mapper/isw_cfaeccihhh_RAID_MIKE. That fixed the booting side of things. I would expect Grub to know and use (or offer the option to use) the manually installed location because such a deviation would be done to correct a problem such as mine. It would likely be the last known working configuration, and resetting to a previous location should not be done without at least asking me. As I understand you this would mean that a defect in the automatic installation long time ago would still be coming back on every upgrade / re-install? The moaning and groaning during boot used not to be too serious, depending on what device couldn't be found. If /home, swap or DATA yes, then it would pull through and boot. If / then no joy, busybox and reboot, try again. So I guess yes it is relevant, or at least a symptom. I'll see what information I can get for you later this week (any specific logs you would like to see?) If I find time next weekend I'll do a full install, formatting the fs and all, of both Maverick and Natty, see what happens and report back. cheers Tom PS: The other machine, which is the one that I started this bug report with, has a Promise Fasttrak chipset, 2 discs in a striped set ,raid0, Maverick 32bits. It's been non-usable since jan18th, but I can get it into a running state, so if you want logs or other info on that one, plz ask. If need be I can do a full re-install on this machine as well, since I do have /home and DATA on separate partitions. Thing is that on Maverick Gparted is still 0.6x and the problem with dmraid was fixed in Gparted 0.7 so formatting the partitions won't work and needs to be done from a separate session booting off either a Gparted or a Natty CD. I realise it's a bit messy to report on 2 separate machines in one thread, but they share the same behaviour and they are both running dmraid. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631795 Title: [LUCID, MAVERICK, NATTY] do not boot reliably on dmraid set -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

update: Have not had a single boot go right since above posts (18 jan). Try every other day, go into recovery mode and load whatever updates there are and hope for the best. I've got no idea what caused this intermittent issue to become a complete show stopper, but it must have been in the updates between 13 and 18 jan 2011. regards Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/631795 Title: [LUCID, MAVERICK] do not boot reliably on dmraid set -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 631795] Re: [MAVERICK] does not boot reliably after install on dmraid set
hi Phillip, I got some failed boots yesterday. Before that the usual moaning, but it pulled through in the end. My daily updates included a new kernel, and that sure made it easier to reproduce failure :-) After rebooting into the new kernel, /home could not be mounted. I chose M for Manual recovery and got the information you asked me in #63 (pic 3493). Btw, I hope you don't mind me posting some photo's again here, it's quite a lot of info to type manually and I can't copy and paste it easily. Rebooted again, failed again. To be sure I got the same info (pic 3494). Rebooted again, failed again. First some of the 'normal' messages which I managed to capture (pic 3495), then it stumbled on a damaged root fs (pic 3496). Rebooted again, failed again. This time it could not mount root and I got a Busybox. Did the checks (as in pics 3497 and 3498.) Finally I rebooted into the previous kernel and that got me a working system. As far as I can see the results are pretty consistant. I do hope this makes more sense than it makes to me. At least we can now provoke the failure quite reliably... The second machine I'm using usually gives messages like in pic 3495, but then does boot OK. Sorry, but this issue still exists, in fact I had to reboot 3x this morning before getting here. To add information: I recently got another machine which we use als develop/test box. It also has DMraid, but differs from my own setup: my machine: Maverick 32bit, Fasttrack100, striped set, PATA disks, dual booting XP new machine: Lucid 32 bit, Intel chipset, mirrored set, SATA disks, no other OS Both systems are fully updated, both show the same behaviour and error messages. I will add detailed information from the other machine through apport. What else should I check and report here? I'm not ready to move to Natty on my own machine, but may do so on the new box if required. It's just a test hack. Setting status to confirmed, since I now have two systems with this issue. [Bug 631795] Re: [MAVERICK] does not boot reliably after install on dmraid set
apport information ** Description changed: Binary package hint: dmraid hi After *a lot* of troubles with Gparted and Grub / Grub-install, I managed to install Maverick Beta from an Alternative CD (iso image dated 05 sept 2010). This is a system with Promise Fasttrack fakeraid, booting off 2 disks in striped mode. It's dual boot with XP. When booting I see a lot of error messages that indicate a mismatch in the naming of partitions between dmraid and the kernel. It seems one is using the /dev/mapper/pdc_jcchiiab5 convention, while the other uses dm-5. After a while it does boot, but as it does not mount /home on /dev/mapper/pdc_jcchiiab6, I can not log on. I tried going into recovery mode, dropping into a root session on the right partition, mounting /home and then doing an update-initramfs -u to see if that would restore the right device names for my / and /home. It did not work, so I'm not enjoying Maverick yet :-( I'm linking this bug to the package linux as well, since I believe it is an issue between dmraid and the kernel. If there is more information I should collect, please tell me what you need, and give me some hints on how to get them.
