[Bug 1033598] Re: the CAPTCHA challenge in Ubuntu Software Center is much too difficult to solve for a real human being

2015-07-22 Thread Tom Peterson
Aarre is completely correct. Fanatically clinging to bug heat as a
measure of the importance of solving this issue demonstrates a short-
sighted administrative rigidity that cannot fail to scare away new
users.

Aarre was also correct to describe this situation as a "Catch-22".
Anyone who has read Heller's classic novel will immediately recognize
the paradigm:

   1) I can't create an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account because the captchas are
impossible to get right in a reasonable number of efforts.
   2) Because I can't create an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account, I can't complain
about this in forums accessible only with an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account, nor
can I create a bug report. Why would anyone expect new users to be savvy or
invested enough to formally create a bug report anyway?
   3) Because the bug itself prevents the natural accumulation of "bug heat"
that would cause it to be resolved and because administrators insist on
slavish adherence to a prioritization mechanism that is clearly inapplicable in
this context, this issue has remained unaddressed for more than 3 years,
frustrating and turning away potential Linux converts by the dozens.

And when the problems with this approach are clearly articulated (thank
you, aarre), the official response focuses solely on ways to increase
the bug heat rather than on ways to actually solve the problem.

If I were a newcomer, eager to explore an exciting new path through
open-source solutions (and this is exactly what I am), I'd have to be
wondering by now whether this is the kind of forward-thinking, problem-
solving community of fully engaged users that I was hoping to find. And
I might give up and look elsewhere.

[Bug 1268257] Re: nvidia-331-updates 331.38-0ubuntu3: nvidia-331-updates kernel module failed to build, with only error: "objdump: '... .tmp_nv.o': No such file"

2015-05-05 Thread Tom Peterson
Is there actually a fix for this issue? This problem has been going on for
well over a year now, and the stated solution ("for many people") below, does
not seem to work for my own situation/system, as described. This information
also appears to be quite dated.

I would like to resolve this issue on my own system because the problem seems
to disrupt the systems ability to run the software that I have created this
partition and its associated Operating System to run. This system I intend to
use strictly for recording audio music (in what has been coined as a "Digital
Audio Workstation").

sigh!

Re: [Bug 662429] Re: evolution crashes (shuts off actually)

2010-10-21 Thread Tom Peterson
Thank you. I looked through the instructions finding that I am likely
too much a novice to understand but a little of what they say. It is
really unclear to me. Maybe it is just too early in my day to have
things make sense, or it could be otherwise. For the moment I will pass
and hope there is a fix on the way in the near future.
I use Orca screen reader a lot due to my reading issues. I am nearly
convinced that the processes within orca may be somehow related to the
crash problem.
But as to installing the dbg packages, I did [aptitude search '~i' |
fgrep -e '-dbg'] finding a few, but there is where I become confused.
Thus I am going to pass on further attempts at this time, mostly due to
my own ignorance.

Thanks for you time and efforts. As I continue to learn I may one day
feel confident enough to be helpful.

[Bug 662429] [NEW] evolution crashes (shuts off actually)

2010-10-17 Thread Tom Peterson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Upgrade system from 10.04 to 10.10 Friday, the problem must be related.

Evolution version 2.30.3

Evolution just shut itself off sometimes. It will then start back up
usually fine, but then sometimes #1. below.

When:

1. on initial startup, it goes through the start up process, then shuts off
before the GUI comes up (intermittently).
2. sending a message (at message send completion)(intermittently).
3. changing menu "view" settings.
4. using the "send/receive" tool bar function.
5. when idle (has occurred at least 3 times).

As of yet I have not attempted any solutions, such as reload software.
I have a good back up but...

Thanks.
