[Bug 666288] Re: Double notificiation on incoming messages

2011-01-07 Thread Conscious User
Happens to me with both the messaging menu and the tray icon. It does
not happen when the conversation window is already opened though. Seems
like the trigger is the action of opening the window.

[Bug 697760] Re: At the login screen, you can not click without having moved the cursor

This is particularly noticeable on laptops with touchpads, where you can
sit there manically mashing the left mouse button and it won't do
anything.

[Bug 697760] [NEW] At the login screen, you can not click without having moved the cursor

2011-01-05 Thread user-1888
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.10 (but I recall that this bug existed in 10.04 and possibly
earlier).

Once you reach the login page, and if you have a single user, the cursor
is located centrally, above the area you need to click in order to open
the password entry box.

If you do not move the mouse at all, but just click, the password entry
box does not appear. The password entry box only appears if you first
move the mouse (even a single pixel is sufficient), and then click on
the box.

Admittedly this is only a minor annoyance, but why should the user be
forced to move the mouse (even if it is only a single pixel), in order
to interact with a button that the cursor is already over?

((Is this in any way related to Bug #14669?))

[Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-23 Thread Joe User

I also request that this bug be fixed, and the kernel expose the
/dev/mixer, /dev/dsp, and other devices..

I have 3 sound cards in my home machine, hooked up to several radio
tuners.

Signals are recorded according to cron jobs and bash scripts.

How exactly will I replace that functionality with PulseAudio?

I reiterate the opinion above that PA is garbage. A particulary smelly,
slimy load of garbage.

Please make PA coexist with the legacy means of sound card control.

Is this change infecting other distributions? Can I use Debian to avoid
this problem? Advice about other distributions would be helpful.

Thank you.

[Bug 672105] [NEW] Wifi icon on the Gnome top panel moves randomly from the top right hand side to the top left hand side of the top panel when you boot into Ubuntu.

2010-11-07 Thread user
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I boot into ubuntu and the Wifi icon will be on the top panel towards the right
hand side near the date and time.
Sometimes when i boot into ubuntu and log into my account the Wifi icon will
appear on the top left hand side of the top panel just under the Ubuntu logo on
the top panel.
The Wifi icon mostly appears just under the Ubuntu logo on the left of the top
panel but then randomly between restarts it does return back to its original
location that being the right hand side of the top panel next to the date and
time.
It's very annoying that the Wifi icon does not stay in it's default place.

[Bug 664449] Re: Tasks component of evolution not accessible in maverick UNE

2010-11-03 Thread user user
There are 2 alternatives what to do:
1. make the evolution appear normal. this can be done by editing
/usr/share/applications/evolution.desktop. Change the "Exec=evolution %U"
line to "Exec=evolution" (my understanding the %U adds the "--express" switch)
and then re-login. Problem with this approach is that on small netbook
displays the full version doesn't work very well. Another problem is that it
is sort of visually unstable. after a few switches between the mail, calendar,
tasks and memos the section where normally menu is located gets lost and the
whole image shifts downwards so that the botom status line gets cropped from
the screen.

another approach which worked better for me was to do the following
1. sudo cp /usr/share/applications/evolution-mail.desktop
/usr/share/applications/evolution-tasks.desktop
2. sudo cp /usr/share/applications/evolution-mail.desktop
/usr/share/applications/evolution-memos.desktop
3. edit the files, change the first four lines to:
Name=Evolution Tasks
Comment=Manage tasks
Exec=evolution --component=tasks --express
Icon=evolution-tasks
(and similarly for evolution-memos.desktop)
4. relogin, find the new applications in the app finder and put them to the
sidebar.

hope this helps

Re: [Bug 530141] Re: wodim fails to write iso files on DL media

2010-11-02 Thread Joe User
Thanks for the reply.

If the problem is social, and 6 years old, I'll despair of it ever being
fixed.

Do you know of any source for a packaged fix for this? If no one else
has done it, I will just package cdrecord into a .deb file, and install
that. So, I will still be able to use kubuntu packages without worrying
about kubuntu changes disabling k3b.

Thanks.

[Bug 530141] Re: wodim fails to write iso files on DL media

2010-10-31 Thread Joe User

This problem still exists with a brand new installation of kubuntu 10.10.

I cannot burn dual-layer DVD's if the data to be burned requires the
second DVD layer.

I can build the cdrtools-3.00 as suggested by Schilly, and burn the
DVD's just fine with the same data and hardware.

This problem has existed for a long time. Let's fix this by replacing
wodim with the latest and greatest cdrecord.

If we're voting, I vote to replace wodim.

[Bug 669274] [NEW] wodim does not burn dual-layer DVD's

2010-10-31 Thread Joe User
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wodim

See my comment to bug 481536, which has been closed.

This problem still exists with a brand new installation of kubuntu
10.10.

I cannot burn dual-layer DVD's if the data to be burned requires the
second DVD layer.

I can build the cdrtools-3.00 as suggested by Schilly, and burn the
DVD's just fine with the same data and hardware.

This prolem has existed for a long time. Let's fix this by replacing
wodim with the latest and greatest cdrecord.

[Bug 378240] Re: Please merge xen 4.0.1~rc5-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-09-28 Thread User Virtual
Updated Xen 4.0.*.rc* source & kernels packaged for Ubuntu
http://virtualusr.wordpress.com/2010/07/14/xen-4-0-rc-source-kernels-packaged-for-ubuntu/
Posted on 2010-07-14 - Updated on 2010-09-28 by virtualusr

There was bug in comparing release version numbers to versions of
available patches. It works now for RELEASE 4.0.1 and all earlier rc-s.
No changes in patches, still the same old from 4.0.1rc1.

[Bug 645728] [NEW] Please provide easy way to disable network interface name persistence

2010-09-22 Thread Happy User
Public bug reported:

When working with virtual machines, it can be quite painful to spend a good
amount of time customizing an Ubuntu virtual machine as an appliance for
others, only to find out that it won't work for them due to the network
interface being renamed when it is imported, with this message being in the log:
udev: renamed network interface eth0 to eth1

Typically when creating a virtual machine for distribution, this
behavior is not desirable as the MAC address will likely change and
that's ok.

Could Ubuntu please provide a mechanism by which automatic networking
device renaming could be disabled, and perhaps even disable it by
default in server installs where a bare minimum virtual machine option
was selected?

I realize it is possible to modify /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-
net.rules so that a MAC address change won't change the interface name,
as well as changing /etc/network/interfaces so that a new name will have
the same treatment as the old, however many appliance authors might just
as soon use CentOS or FreeBSD if they get burned by this.

Thanks!

Twitter is a completely different context. Mentioning the source of your

I personally believe this signature can backfire badly. I don't think
it's possible to come up with a wording that does not sound obnoxious.

[Bug 615300] Re: Evolution should have a default signature enabled

2010-09-19 Thread Conscious User
I would like to see more details on the rationale behind this.

Are there any studies showing that users like and keep this kind of
thing even after being aware that they can turn it off?

Or this is simply advertisement trying to slip into something that "most
users don't care enough to change"?

If it's the latter, I think Ubuntu should be above this kind of sneaky
strategy.

[Bug 512200] Re: [Lucid] fails to host and to be hosted using LXC/OpenVZ containers

2010-09-08 Thread User Virtual
Hi guys

I've spent too much of my time making this work. You can download install demo
scripts with minimally patched lxc-ubuntu template script that works perfectly
here in PV Xen 4.0.1rc5 guest and remotely on another physical machine. "One
click" solution, which should be easy enough to use in coming releases by sed
-i 's/lucid/maverick/g' .
Well, easy excluded upstart changes, /dev population and similar. No guarantees
here. But LTS Lucid inside LTS Lucid (inside Xen 4.0.* or physical box) flies
great.

[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks

2010-08-28 Thread OS/2-User
@Mark: Thanks for sharing your experience. During the last 2 week or so I gave
some daily Mavericks, installed on an USB stick via usb-crator-gtk, a try, but
here I still pretty much had a no go, when it comes to WiFi and my RT2870 based
802.11n USB adapter.
Usually I'm just stuck in the evil and vicious "Authentication required by
wireless network" cycle, from which I just can't break free.

But it looks like, that the latest over-sized build with kernel
2.6.35-19-generic from 2 or 3 days, now finally seems to be working
again with my WiFi adapter, once I 'modprobe -r rt2800usb' one of the
two competing USB-adapter drivers rt2870sta and rt2800usb, using the
methods, that started to become so crucial with Karmic. I'm now
connected since some 30 minutes straight, a new record since Karmic.

This nuisance, where both wireless USB drivers are getting loaded, was
first introduced with Karmic and still hasn't been fixed. I wonder if
that ever will still happen. 365 days, 2 Lucid releases and an almost
Maverick one should have been plenty of time for that, one would think.

Right now I am d/l'ing the latest, now again correctly sized 10.10 Daily Build
ISO file - the Beta release date seems to be getting close - to then update my
USB stick, which btw. has to be done with Maverick's usb-creator-gtk version.
The one being part of Karmic fails to boot from the stick's logical partitions.
Then I just hope, that the rt2870 nightmare after some 8 months now, eventually
has really come to an end - at least until they break something new, that is ;-)

[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks

2010-08-26 Thread OS/2-User
I was under the impression, that the rt2870sta mess, preventing an USB WiFi
adapter to connect to a WPA2 protected access point, which was introduced in
Lucid, has been sorted out by now and should have been fixed in 10.04.1 Desktop
Live-CD.
But for me, it is still not working, keeping Lucid useless.
Btw, both drivers, rt2870sta and rt2800usb are still being loaded
simultaneously, as initially reported i.e. for Karmic in Bug #460323. Unloading
rt2800usb however does not help in case of 10.04.1 to connect.

[Bug 619019] [NEW] Eject hotkey does not open empty tray

2010-08-16 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

In Lucid, the hotkey associated with eject does not open the CD tray
when it's empty. This worked in every release until Karmic, so seems
like a regression.

The causes of this might be related to Bug #569994. Following the
recommendation there, I opened a new report specific to the case where
the tray is empty.

@David, the description refers only to the tray. It does not specify
that a CD should be in.

In fact, as you can see by the comments above, at least for me,
manuarmata and KruyKaze, the hotkey *does work* when a CD is in.

[Bug 405616] Re: Update package to v0.33.0

2010-08-09 Thread Conscious User
I recommend updating the package to 0.37.1. It was only in this version
that some showstopper bugs were fixed. Those bugs caused subtitleeditor
to segfault whenever a video was loaded or a waveform was built. Without
video and waveform, the application loses a major part of its
functionality. I compiled 0.37.1 and can state that it works with Lucid
libraries.

[Bug 483792] Re: Brasero Copy to ISO image does not work for some DVDs

2010-07-25 Thread OS/2-User
> A new version of brasero is available in both Lucid and Maverick ...

Pedro, where exactly can I find those new Brasero packages for download?

http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/, as well as /lucid-updates and
/lucid-backports, all fail with:

"Error
mehr als eine Suite für show_static angegeben (dapper dapper-updates
dapper-backports hardy hardy-updates hardy-backports intrepid intrepid-updates
intrepid-backports jaunty jaunty-updates jaunty-backports karmic karmic-updates
karmic-backports lucid)"

Apparently those directories don't even exist yet.

Since ISOs burned to CD with Brasero Version: 2.28.2-0ubuntu1 on Gnome
Karmic, for me always fail the md5chksum, while Nerolinux Version:
4.0.0.0-1 works just fine, I really would like to give that July version
a try as well.

I really want to be able to burn CDs again on my laptop as I could
before with Jaunty.

And upgrading to Lucid is pointless as well, as long as the crucial WPA2
log-in problem for Ralink RT2870sta based WiFi adapters is still not
being fixed.

Or are those problems coming from bugs in cdrkit instead of providing
cdrtools?

UPDATED Xen 4.0.1-rc2 … source & kernels packaged for Ubuntu
http://virtualusr.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/xen-4-0-1-rc2-source-kernels-packaged-for-ubuntu/
* Updated 2010-06-30

- Added the very important missing xen-4.0-0ubuntu1.diff.gz for all
versions. This was a big mistake making this post unusable since the
21st of Jun, SORRY.

- One line was missing in packageXen40x.sh to update xen repository
every time it is run without version argument. Previous version could
not automatically pick up 4.0.1-rc3, this can and does the build without
error.

- Bruce Edge reminded me to retry standard ubuntus “make-kpkg kernel-image”
which was broken when I started. Now it seems to be working again. I added a
script for really Ubuntu-way of packaging kpkgXenKernel.sh. It’s practically
the same as the older remakeXenKernel.sh except the “make-kpkg (Ubuntu) vs
deb-pkg (Linux Kernel source)”.
If one of them fails to build you can try the other.

[Bug 560498] Re: deleted twitter entry remains in gwibber

2010-06-23 Thread Conscious User
@Colin Dean:

There is a workaround in case you don't want to keep showing this
privileged information in Gwibber:

1) Close Gwibber (use File -> Quit) to ensure the service is closed as
well.

2) In a browser, open file:///home//.local/share/desktop-
couch/couchdb.html

3) In the couchdb admin page, choose the database "gwibber_messages"

4) Click on "delete database"

5) Restart Gwibber. It will need a few seconds to reload all messages,
but the deleted one shouldn't be there anymore.

This workaround was given to me by the main Gwibber developer.

@Boris Derzhavets

Device /dev/xen/evtchn is at the moment loaded by udevd here as well. I have
this code back from some previous attempts when it did not work (maybe
RELEASE-4.0.0). However the other device mentioned in docs /dev/xen/gntdev is
still missing here (Ubuntu 9.10 karmic, kernel compiled with
CONFIG_XEN_GNTDEV=y CONFIG_XEN_DEV_EVTCHN=y). I know I could create it manually
but I want it as designed. Everything seems to work even without this
/dev/xen/gntdev.
I will probably remove this module loading from init.d/xend as soon as devices
are actually created by udevd here.

I have no such warnings at the moment. Only this ... I hope it's not dangerous.

Fixing the bug is quite easy in the main.css file of the adium theme.
The cause is that the ".chatItem .avatar" class stretches both width and
height. Commenting out the width line solves the problem.

@Cleveland Rock:

Long story short, yes, for Lucid you will either have to use the
Messaging Menu, AllTray, or add a launcher to the panel. As this was a
design decision, fixing this for Lucid is "wishlist" at best, which
probably can't qualify for a Stable Release Update. The icon will
probably return in Lucid+1, though.

[Bug 452067] Re: indicator-applet-session should launch empathy if I change my status

2010-06-02 Thread Conscious User
@clemmy:

There seems to be a misunderstanding. I'm not involved in any way with
the development, so please take those compliments back. :)

Anyway, like I said before, allowing the change of default chat app is
not trivial. The eog example you gave is just a matter of choosing which
app opens a file. The Me Menu involves much more complex functionality
and communication. Even if it the developers decide to do it, it won't
be for 10.10.

So, in my opinion, while it's nice to think about the ideal scenario,
the focus of this bug report should be on what is a good solution in the
short term. And I'm not sure that alienating Pidgin users from using the
Me Menu (something that will happen depending on the solution adopted to
fix the bug) is a good idea.

The ability to change the default chat application does not currently
exist and might not be implemented in any near future. From a

[Bug 420953] Re: Exits on Close instead of Iconifying

2010-06-01 Thread Conscious User
Small update: the tray icon has returned in the pre-3.0 branch. Although
this does not and will not change things for Lucid, this practically
confirms the return of the icon for the next release (of both Gwibber
and Ubuntu), so have some peace of mind. :)

Omer, I'm changing the upstream status to "In Progress", as it is just
invalid downstream but at the same time I don't think a "pre-3.0" branch
qualifies as a "Fix Commited".

[Bug 588432] [NEW] Totem not loading subtitles automatically, be them in a separate file or embedded in matroska

2010-06-01 Thread Conscious User
Public bug reported:

In the past, I could load a video with totem and, if there was a
subtitle with the same filename (except for the extension, of course),
it was loaded automatically. Matroska subtitles would also be loaded and
listed if existed. This is not working anymore in Lucid.

It is a minor problem for subtitles in a separate file, as loading them
explicitly after the video starts works. But it is a *major* problem
with matroska files because there seems to be no way of seeing them.

[Bug 320390] Re: Cannot connect to 802.1x/PEAP/mschapv2 wireless network with rt2860

2010-05-26 Thread ASUS Eee1000H User
I would just like to comment that the title of this thread is Cannot
connect to 802.1x/PEAP/mschapv2 wireless network with rt2860. That
being said, this issue still exists.

I have tried all of the methods across all of the postings and still
cannot connect to a dynamic Wep 802.1x with PEAP authentication. It
seems the ralink driver updates still is not working correctly with
802.1x. Now that being said yes WPA and WPA2 both work as does 128-WEP
and no security (this is what i have been able to test), which i would
say would work for most people however i think we need to stay on topic
regarding the fact that Dynamic WEP 802.1X still does not work. If
someone has a counter point to this, please post what you did to get
this to work. Quite a few of us need this to work with Universities or
Corporations that only offer this as a choice for wireless.

[Bug 420953] Re: Exits on Close instead of Iconifying

2010-05-19 Thread Conscious User
@Matthias:

1) Notifications work for me when running Gwibber as a service. If they
do not for you, this is not intended. File a bug or search for an
existing one.

2) Please read the comments above again, with more attention. For those
who do not use the Messaging Menu, there are workarounds available to
have iconify-like behavior. And the icon probably *will* be brought back
in future upstream versions. It just will not be brought back
*specifically for the version released in Ubuntu Lucid*.

2010-05-18 Thread Conscious User
Oh, I'm terribly sorry, I forgot something important. All my comments
refer to downstream (Gwibber 2.30 in Ubuntu Lucid).

I have nothing against keeping this report open for upstream. I'm just
suggesting it to be closed downstream in order to avoid misleading Lucid
users into thinking this might be "fixed" for Lucid, which will never
happen.

[Bug 420953] Re: Exits on Close instead of Iconifying

2010-05-18 Thread Conscious User
@Steven, you didn't understand. Let me summarize again.

1) For users who use the Messaging Menu, Gwibber *does* iconify when you
click on the close button, the "icon" being its entry on the Messaging
Menu. It is different under the hood but the behavior is supposed to be
the same. The only difference is the longer startup time, but this is
actually a different bug and shouldn't happen. In this sense, this
report is "invalid".

2) For users who do not use the Messaging Menu, not having a tray icon
was a design decision. You can work around this by adding a launcher on
the panel or using AllTray. Yes, those solutions are suboptimal and yes,
the Gwibber developer said he was thinking in bringing the tray icon
back in the next release. But that doesn't change the fact that, for the
current release, it was a design decision and will stay. In this sense,
this report is "won't fix".

Judging by the last comments, I think this bug report outlived its

[Bug 420953] Re: Exits on Close instead of Iconifying

2010-05-18 Thread Conscious User
@Facundo:

Please read the previous comments again. If you want a full close,
including the service, use File -> Quit. (or ctrl+q as Omer suggested)

Behavior-wise, the difference between Gwibber and applications that do
not separate GUI from service, like Empathy, is non-existent. If you
close Empathy with the window close button instead of using File ->
Quit, the window will hide to tray but Empathy will remain open and you
will keep receiving notifications.

If your complaint is a general complaint that includes Empathy as well,
then it is unrelated to this bug and should be taken to proper media.
But then do realize that it has nothing to do with separating service
from GUI at all, as Empathy does not do that.

Omer, not exactly. Bug #548994 is about Gwibber being different from
Empathy, while this one is only about Gwibber.

I changed the description and title to make the difference more clear.

** Summary changed:

- Inconsistent behavior before and after Gwibber is started for the first time
+ Broadcasting field only appears after running Gwibber at least once

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: indicator-me

  From the specification in: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeMenu:

"The broadcast field should be present if you have at least one
  broadcast account set up."

In Bug #548994, Matthew Paul Thomas stated that this is irrelevant
whether Gwibber happens to be running.

In Lucid, having accounts set up is not enough. The Gwibber service has
- to be running as well.
+ to be started at least once.

[Bug 551627] Re: Account icon near text field cropped on the bottom

2010-04-24 Thread Conscious User
Font is droid, font size is 8 for everything.

I think those are the only non-default settings with respect to
appearance.

[Bug 528275] Re: Gwibber not adding mentions to indicator-applet

2010-04-21 Thread Conscious User
This bug was caused by the lack of the python-indicate package in the
default install. This is fixed now and I think this bug can be closed.

In my opinion as a tester, no. As far as I'm concerned, you fixed it. :)

[Bug 553933] Re: Network manager icons incomplete (do not differentiate stages and vpn)

Aanyway, to some extent I agree that "it's just an animation'
and I understand if you simply want to close this bug and move the
discussion to another place, as most of what I'm saying are personal
opinions.

No, I'm not confused (not in this case =P). My point was *not* that NM
should draw attention. It was that even for very simple things like drawing
attention, some icons work better than others.

I'm saying this because you are referring to the messaging menu drawing
attention as something inherently obvious, and the NM status as something
so complex that no icons would be good enough if the person doesn't
know a priori about the stages. I'm saying that both are more or less the
same thing: they can be obscured by a bad choice of icons and evidenced
by a good choice of icons.

And the current choice for NM is not a good one (more on that below).

> As i mentioned only the user who cares or knows , will know what it
> means ;-)

And my point is that, right now, *even* the user who cares or knows might
not know what it means. I've been using NM for years now, and I'm aware
of the three stages and what they mean, but there's no obvious reason
for me to deduce that back-and-forth means second stage. What you
just said is one of many possible interpretations. (see my previous post)

The fact that you *had* to explain the back and forth instead of simply
state that its interpretation is obvious says a lot. :)

And, regardless of that, I repeat: the average user might now *exactly*
what each stage refers to, but the idea of "progress", at least, is useful,
and the current icons do not properly show progress.

With the original icons, the average user might not know that second
stage means password request, but he surely can deduce that two green
dots are more "advanced" than one.

[Bug 553933] Re: Network manager icons incomplete (do not differentiate stages and vpn)

2010-04-14 Thread Conscious User
Sorry, I got confused. Rephrasing the last part.

Compare this with the current version:

1 - wide waves
2 - narrow waves, animation back and forward
3 - narrow waves, animation just forward

What does back and forward means? "We are closer"? "We are being
rejected, so what we send is coming back"? "We have been accepted, so
now we are exchanging info"? What does just forward means? "We are far
away"? "We are not connecting, our requests are never responded"? I
don't think it's obvious neither for the average user, neither for
someone who already knows NM.
