[Bug 1958248] [NEW] Screen garbled on login and freezes on unsuspend

2022-01-18 Thread Vic J
Public bug reported:

1. The login manager works but as soon as I log in, the screen is filled
with colored vertical stripes and is unusable. I found that if I change
the screen resolution to the maximum (1920x1080), then the screen is ok.
Any other resolution that I've tried (eg (1440x900 used to be my
preference) causes the unreadable display and it does not revert back,
requiring a reboot.

2. Coming out of suspend, the password entry screen is displayed, but
there is no response to keyboard or mouse, requiring a reboot.

HP Envy x360 laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 with Radeon graphics

Last known kernel that worked is 5.11.0-46

[Bug 1835024] Re: Links triggered within most snap apps open in a separate browser session

2020-04-25 Thread vic
I can confirm that this bug exists on a fresh install of 20.04 as well.

Changing the firefox profile to that of `default-release` for the
firefox session opened via Slack solves the problem but it would be
wonderful if it could work seamlessly out of the box :)

[Bug 1821194] Re: [nvidia] Screen frozen after switch to other tty and do login & logout

2019-03-25 Thread Vic Liu
** Description changed:

To simplify reproduce steps, one only has to:
  1. install (tested so far) Ubuntu Bionic
  2. switch to other tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Fn
  3. login and logout
Then it should try to switch back to GDM (no matter you have logged in GUI or
not), triggers vt-switch bug and lock up.

  Some more findings:

  1. So far we know all other newer Ubuntu versions are immune, e.g.
  Ubuntu Cosmic's gdm(version 3.30.1-1ubuntu5).

  2. login _and_ logout from another virtual console is required.
Switching between text console and GUI back and forth before logging out
doesn't trigger this bug. So this might(?) also involves systemd-logind
  as well;

  3. while gdm locked up, kernel and the rest of the system are actually
still alive. Networking is still available, and even the input devices
are still functioning well. Only gdm fails to grab the device inputs.

  4. when gdm locks up due to either resume from suspend or vt-switch,
restart gdm (from remote ssh) will bring the system back.

Ubuntu Cosmic's gdm(version 3.30.1-1ubuntu5).

2. login _and_ logout from another virtual console is required.
Switching between text console and GUI back and forth before logging out
doesn't trigger this bug. So this might(?) also involves systemd-logind
as well;

3. while gdm locked up, kernel and the rest of the system are actually
still alive. Networking is still available, and even the input devices
are still functioning well. Only gdm fails to grab the device inputs.

4. when gdm locks up due to either resume from suspend or vt-switch,
restart gdm (from remote ssh) will bring the system back.

Cosmic/Disco, there should still some works to be done in the nvidia
driver.

[Bug 1093185] Re: Nautilus browse network broken pipe on AFP after suspend

2013-10-29 Thread Vic
I can confirm this issue also
Release:13.04

The broken pipe issue also happen when I am connected to a share on my Synology
Diskstation and I change the privileges of the connected or any other share on
the Synology for the connected or any other user.
For example I connect as user Piet to share music and change the privileges of
user guest from readonly to read/write for share photos (all on teh sane NAS).
The the connection for user Piet is lost and the broken pipe error occurs.

Killing gvfsd-afp-browse makes the shares available again.

Same issue with Lexmark S415 (S410 Series).

If I use a browser and goto the CUPS administration page,
http:[computername]:631/, then I can get the Status to revert back to
just Idle if I reject all jobs, and then accept jobs again.

This must be done after each print job, otherwise subsequent print jobs
will print out garbage.

[Bug 1077565] [NEW] installation doesnt detect windows dynamic disk

2012-11-10 Thread Vic
Public bug reported:

Linux is incompatible with windows dynamic disks and cannot be installed
alongside windows in such a disk. The ubuntu installation routine does
not detect that a drive is a windows dynamic drive and reports the disk
structure incorrectly. For details see
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46t=116723p=646747#p646747

No warning is given to the user. If the user were to install to what
ubuntu thinks is a partition, data loss is likely.

Expected:
The install routines should check if the disk is a windows dynamic and if so,
should only allow complete overwriting of windows, or stopping the
installation. It should not allow the user to try to install dual boot.
Ideally, it would give the user suggestions on backing up their windows data
and point to how the drive might be converted back to basic.

This bug affects other distributions also, so this is probably affecting
upstream as well (I didn't try a debian install).

This occurred trying to install Ubuntu 12.04, 32 bit from a liveCD.

I will add that U1 seemed to be working well when I upgraded to 11.04 a
month ago, but for the last 2 weeks it's rarely sync'd at all.

[Bug 240916] Re: can't configure display resolution (monitor, graphics card) manually in gui

2010-09-10 Thread Vic Main
To quote maJongg..

I have been hit by the monitor not detected problem too, . I think the
problem is very common, but is often mis-diagnosed as a driver issue.
The problems has become a virtual show-stopper It was that for me. I tried to
fix the problem (or at least get around it at least 2 years ago) I was running

Ubuntu 8.x, and ended up with a 800x600 resolution. I recently installed
version 10.04 and tried to resolve this problem again. At least the
generic driver would do 1024x768. I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 with
AGP8X card, and found out how to get around this problem.

I have to echo the sentiments of majongg and TheZorch regarding this
problem hindering the adoption of Linux, it certainly did for me!!. I
spent at least a full day trying to get my monitor to display correctly.
Thanks to the generous help from the forum.

The main problem (let alone the monitor not being recognized), is that the
software wildly guesses at the range of the HSYNC and VSYNC
which it writes to the xorg.conf file.

Thanks, Vic

[Bug 178227] Re: [hardy]panel is invisible

2010-06-09 Thread Vic Demuzere
I'm not sure if I'm still allowed to comment on this old bug, but it
happened to me today.

Ubuntu 10.04, panel suddenly became invisible.

Same behaviour, when I click the place where the buttons should be, the menu
pops up.
Docky is also invisible, but works when I click the correct location.

[Bug 178227] Re: [hardy]panel is invisible

2010-06-09 Thread Vic Demuzere
Sorry for posting so much, but I've discovered something new:

After launching a fullscreen app and closing it again, the panel and
dock are visible. I think the problem is that gnome-panel and docky
think I'm in fullscreen. The same tooltips that docky keeps showing even
when invisible are also visible when I'm playing a fullscreen game.

2010-03-26 Thread Vic Morgan
By a strange coincidence I ran the same print job today using
2.6.31-20-generic - with no problems. If you want any more info on my
system please specify. Thanks for your continuing contributions - very
much appreciated.

2010-03-13 Thread Vic Morgan
Hello Jeremy,
This bug no longer appears, not surprisingly as there have been many
updates since then. Thanks for the contact.
Rgds,
Vic morgan.

 Hi Vic,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 329766

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
 results.

 Thanks in advance.

with the OS. Thanks for the response and sorry for the trouble.

Update on this. I'm not sure if it resolves the issue yet, but when
using Checkbox i noted that the screens were set to outside the monitor
operational limits - although shown as auto in Nvidia utility. Checkbox
apprently changes the resolution settings, which must be selected back
to those required.

[Bug 487269] [NEW] Mouse is going haywire.

2009-11-23 Thread Vic Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The mouse pointer jumps all over the screen(s) even without applications
running. Mouse movements cause random jumps, of varying magnitudes, in
varying directions. This appears to be unaffected by the mouse control
settings and is getting progressively worse. This happens with 2
different USB mice. This may (or not) be connected to a general system
debility with everything (e.g. Firefox) slowing to an unacceptable
degree. System Monitor doesn't indicate any demanding processes or
resource usage.

[Bug 454294] Re: Request upgrading to 1.6.5 for Karmic

2009-10-18 Thread Vic
Hi,

Actually I was not affected by the crash bug described by Keith Packard;
But I am affected by a bug in Xephyr:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24144

which was already fixed in upstream version 1.6.5, but Karmic still uses
1.6.4.

Thanks,

Vic

[Bug 454294] [NEW] Request upgrading to 1.6.5 for Karmic

2009-10-17 Thread Vic
Public bug reported:

xorg-server 1.6.5 was released this week with only two MAJOR bugs fixed.
I highly recommended to upgrade to 1.6.5.

I am the submitter of Xephyr bug #24144 in x.org. This bug annoyed me a
lot and get fixed in both 1.6.5 and 1.7.0. And there's another very
important fix to a driver crash in 1.6.4.

Please see the official xorg-server 1.6.5 release notes:

This release fixes the fact that 1.6.4 would crash on drivers that
still tried to initialize the DGA extension. It also has a minor
improvement for Xephyr to support nesting within an existing window at
a different depth.

I'm not currently planning on doing a 1.6.6 release, but if there are
some 'really important' fixes needed, please post them to the wiki
page and you may convince me to reconsider.

[Bug 314545] Re: gnome-screensaver bad password timeout

2009-07-27 Thread vic
I confirm this bug, it's happened to me a couple of times now, but
usually times out in around 2-3 mins. In the meantime I usually login
via another terminal and use links to browse around :)

It's an incredibly annoying issue!

[Bug 305606] Re: NetworkManager applet says No valid active connections found!

2009-07-13 Thread vic
Hey Aurélien,

So yes, that was it, I had to restart both I guess, just rebooted and
we're good to go!

So to summarize for anyone else who joined in late:

v...@host:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

v...@host:~$ cat /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
[main]
plugins=keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=true

v...@host:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
v...@host:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Merci tellement :)

[Bug 305606] Re: NetworkManager applet says No valid active connections found!

2009-07-07 Thread vic
Hello, Aurélien's solution did not work for me either, after making the
necessary changes to both the interface and the nm-system-settings.conf
files I got this

v...@rebuffat:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
sudo: unable to resolve host rebuffat
 * Reconfiguring network interfaces...
WARNING: ifup -a is disabled in favour of NetworkManager.
  Set ifupdown:managed=false in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf.

  [ OK ]

But the funny part is that when I go back to edit the nm-system-
settings.conf file, the boolean is still set to true ...

v...@rebuffat:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

v...@rebuffat:~$ cat /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
[main]
plugins=keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=true

The applet always shows the warning sign telling me that the device is
unmanaged

[Bug 344022] Re: RaLink RT2860 won't connect to 802.11n WPA2 networks

2009-04-21 Thread Vic
Michael: Not sure if it's MSCHAPv2's problem, but according to aviv, the
wireless router also plays an important role here. aviv's test result
is, if the wireless router is changed to support TKIP or AES O.N.L.Y,
then rt2860sta 1.8.0.0 + NM 0.7 works. My guess is if the wireless
router only supports one key type, then the wifi driver won't have to
figure it out itself so it can connect.

But unfortunately I can't change the company wifi router setting so I
can't test aviv's finding.

Now I think I have a clearer picture of this issue. It's kind of a
mixed problem:

(1) A flexible wifi router (which supports more than one key type) +
(2) A stupid wifi driver (which is not able to figure out the key type
automatically) +
(3) NM 0.7 (which do not have the key type option to choose)
= NO WIFI !!

So aviv chose to fix (1) the router, you guys here chose to fix (2)
downgrade the driver to 1.7.1.1, but I really want to choose (3) add
this option in NM 0.7! Because you have to be award that this is not
only a rt2860sta problem, a lot of other drivers out there have the same
problem.

[Bug 344022] Re: RaLink RT2860 won't connect to 802.11n WPA2 networks

2009-04-21 Thread Vic
Bryan: I don't think that's a wpasupplicant problem, because the driver
1.8.0.0 works with WICD, and manual wpa supplicant configuration, and
even NM 0.6 in Hardy and Debian Lenny. The problem is that NM 0.7 is TOO
SMART, and it just assume that all kernel drivers are also as smart as
it is. NM 0.7 removed the security option (TKIP / CCMP / AES etc) and
just assume that wpasupplicant and the kernel driver should be smart
enough to figure out which one to use.

Personally, I think it's a wrong decision to remove TKIP / CCMP choices
in NM 0.7. You can just imagine how easy it's to add this in NM 0.7
(just a drop down in NM applet and some codes to write pairwise=TKIP in
wpa_supplicant.conf), and how difficult it is to fix all those stupid
drivers out there to adapt NM 0.7's smart policy.

And on the other hand, how could you blame the kernel drivers while all
those drivers work with Wicd or NM 0.6, but not NM 0.7??? It will just
force users leave NM and choose alternatives.

And finally, here is my case. I am connecting to company network
WPA2/TKIP/MSCHAPv2. My test result is:
On Debian Lenny, rt2860sta 1.8.0.0, NM 0.6.6 works, Wicd works
On Ubuntu Jaunty, rt2860sta 1.8.0.0, NM 0.7 won't work, Wicd works
On Ubuntu Jaunty, rt2860sta 1.7.1.1, NM 0.7 works, Wicd works

Did anyone try the ra2860 driver 1.8.0.0 with the new network-manager
0.7.1? It was out just a few days ago and it Plays better with stupid
wifi and ethernet drivers, according to Dan's blog. Hopefully ra2860

Hi!
Well, I don't think I was doing anything with USB when it crashed, if I
remember correctly. Anyway, it happened only once so far and might have
already been fixed in Qt4 or KDE libs, which have been updated recently (and
there was a large update this morning as well). I will keep watching.

Good luck!

[Bug 341077] [NEW] Save screenshot window is not visible

2009-03-11 Thread Vic
Public bug reported:

I use ubuntu Ubuntu 8.10 - the Intrepid Ibex - released in October 2008.
When I try to make sceenshot for java program with popup window I am not able
to do it - I just do not see window Save screenshot. To reproduce - start any
Swing application, for example javaws from jdk 1.6 (print in terminal the
following command javaws -viewer), close java cache viewer, and press button
Settings..., then select combo box with label Select the compression level
for Jar files and try to make sceenshot (Alt+PrtScr). When I make sceenshot
without popups it works fine.
