[Bug 1063193] Re: Cannot restart computer
penalvch: I have not been experiencing this bug since 13.04 was released, maybe even 12.10. So I think the issue probably doesn't remain in any development releases. I say this because I'd rather not install a development release on my only computer, especially since I don't know how to reliably trigger the issue. Hopefully that's good enough though, since the issue seems to be fixed. I am now running a fully-upgraded 13.10 (with latest kernel for 13.10), with extra packages from that big GNOME3 PPA as well. So the issue seems to have resolved itself. [Bug 989655] Re: ubiquity hangs immediately after boot on precise
Yeah, I had the same problem with 13.04 and had to open a VT to install nvidia drivers before any graphical systems kicked in. Otherwise the system would freeze. So there *is* a workaround, but it's hardly a user- friendly experience as it stands right now. [Bug 925048] Re: [GTX 580] X seems to hang a login prompt -- PFIFO errors in dmesg
I don't know if it's of any importance, but I thought I should mention that this still happens to me with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 580. I tried a while ago to boot up the (then) new Gnome 3 release Live CD, and it just froze immediately after automatically logging in and displaying the desktop. The mouse pointer was moving but nothing responded to clicks or drags, at all. I thought, then, that the Live CD was borked. I tried to re-download the image, try again, but it didn't work. Then now with the newer versions of Ubuntu, I'm actually experiencing the same thing! I'm running Ubuntu GNOME Remix now, and I can't even boot into the installer without using a "nomodeset" argument to the boot line when booting. Then boot again with the same trick, install nvidia-* and all is fine after that. Nouveau definitely doesn't look stable from my perspective. :-) Eagerly awaiting a solution to this. [Bug 1069232] Re: Sound lags when opening video files
I think I'm on to something here. (I'm now using version 2.0.5+git20121219+r480-0~r44~quantal1, just for your information.) Allow me to explain. First of all, I have this GNOME Shell extension installed, which might help when debugging this: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/212 /advanced-volume-mixer/ The extension shows which applications are currently using the sound device. During the time when an application is using the sound device, e.g. a video on YouTube is playing, *and* for a short time after, such as when pressing Pause in the YouTube player, there will be a volume item for that particular application in GNOME Shell's volume menu. (You can try this.) There will be one volume slider per application, as well as the master volume. So now, if I have at least one other application using the audio device, i.e. there is another item in GNOME Shell's volume menu at the time I press the Play button in VLC, then there is *no* initial audio delay in VLC. I repeat, there is *no* audio delay if another application is or very recently was using the audio device. (I guess it takes a while between pausing audio on YouTube and it being unregistered from PulseAudio's list of applications using the audio device.) This is 100 % for me. After pausing the YouTube video and waiting until Chrome's ALSA plugin is removed from the volume menu, then the audio delay is back again in VLC when pressing play. This is also 100 % for me. So the correlation seems very strong. My uneducated guess is that it takes about 2 seconds or something until PulseAudio has "warmed up" if no application is using it previously? Or maybe some weird VLC-PulseAudio buffers have to fill before playing the audio? I'll let you folks be the judge. Anyway, it appears (to me at least) that the bug lies with VLC since none of my other audio-playing applications seem to suffer from this bug. Meaning, when I play a video with VLC for example, there is no audio delay on YouTube if a choose to start a video there. PS: Don't try this with Rhythmbox, as pressing Pause in Rhythmbox never removes the volume item from the volume menu, for some reason. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1069232 Title: Sound lags when opening video files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/1069232/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1069232] Re: Sound lags when opening video files
Interesting. The VLC team seems to claim that the PulseAudio sync issues are fixed. They posted on their news blog[1] on 2012-12-15 with a link to release notes of version 2.0.5, saying: "2.0.5 also improves the Mac OS interface, some video filters and Pulseaudio synchronization."[2] Meanwhile, I have VLC version 2.0.5+git20121217+r478-0~r44~quantal1 (i.e. git snapshot from 2012-12-17 -- *after* the release of 2.0.5), and the PulseAudio initial audio delay is still there. Very curious. Benjamin: I installed VLC 2.0.5 from [1], but that still did not fix these synchronization issues. The video starts, and 1-2 seconds later, the audio starts playing. (Before testing with VLC 2.0.5, I disabled the workaround and did "pulseaudio -k".) [Bug 1087440] [NEW] VLC starts with 1-2 seconds of audio delay
Public bug reported: Whenever I start a video in vlc, the audio doesn't chime in until after about 1 second, and stays out-of-sync until I seek in the video. The audio can sometimes also become out-of-sync if I seek many times in a row, quickly. That happens randomly though. The delay upon starting the video happens 100 % of the time. This is basically bug #852437, which is a duplicate of bug #805807, which in turn is marked as "Fix Released". [Bug 1063193] Re: Cannot restart computer
I don't know much about the shutdown/reboot process, so that may very well be the case. But if it's the kernel, I'm a little confused because "sudo reboot" and "sudo poweroff" works fine. [Bug 844081] Re: Unity Greeter - Background of the Unity Greeter should reflect the background chosen by the user that is currently selected
I'm very late to this party, but: "We have FAR more pressing problems on the discretion front. Top of my list is the fact that we don't map notifications away from projectors. That's far more risky - you can control your choice of wallpaper, but you can't control what someone might IM to you while you are making your critical presentation. So, please help us address that issue. I'm sure we all agree that's more important, and perhaps, by the time we come back to this less important issue, we will all have evolved our positions. OK?" By your logic, a perfectly acceptable solution to this is to just uninstall notifications. Or uninstall their IM program. Simple right? Or just not use Ubuntu! Or the regular user could just patch it themselves! Oh how simple. All your reasons for ignoring this option are perfectly applicable to the "more pressing" issue you described. In my experience, the amount of people who have "offensive" (or "private" as I'd much rather call them, because "offensive" is surely a very small subset of "private") wallpapers is much greater than the amount of people who use projectors while their IM program is running. And what! I think I just solved your "pressing problem" -- just turn your IM program off? Could it be that simple? Otherwise, uninstall it. I'm sorry for any unwarranted sarcasm or spitefulness, but this bug report thread made me really, really sad about Ubuntu's attitude and priorities at the top of the mound. :-\ With love, Victor -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/844081 Title: Unity Greeter - Background of the Unity Greeter should reflect the background chosen by the user that is currently selected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/accountsservice/+bug/844081/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 755842] Re: Non-maximized windows which sit on the border of a workspace move when called
I agree. This is one of many bugs that have been lingering with Unity for a long time that make Unity feel like beta software. It's also one of the reasons why I stopped using it and have started using GNOME Shell instead. And because I don't use the default Desktop Environment, i.e. Unity is just sitting there installed on the harddrive without me ever using it, I almost feel like I should just switch to Arch or something where I can pick GNOME Shell right off the bat. (I know I can probably uninstall Unity on Ubuntu too, but... you know. :P) So, as you can see a few seemingly small bugs can cause a chain of reactions/decisions (as in my case) to where I'm actually considering switching distro altogether. [Bug 989655] Re: ubiquity hangs immediately after boot on precise
I'm starting to think it might have something to do with the nouveau graphics driver. I eventually downloaded the alternate installation ISO and was able to finally, after two attempts, install Ubuntu. (I've never had this much trouble with a release, since 2007.) Anyways, at the lightdm login screen, after booting into my new installation, everything was running extremely slowly. Even the mouse pointer was staggering a bit as I was trying to login. I didn't login though, I decided it would be a pain, performance-wise, so I went to a virtual terminal and did some package upgrading/installing. Among other things, I installed nvidia-current and nvidia-current-updates (of which I am using the latter), and now things run smoothly. [Bug 989655] [NEW] ubiquity hangs immediately after boot on precise
Public bug reported: When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a USB stick, ubiquity hangs immediately before I can even click on anything, right after the boot process. Sometimes I'm presented with the two options "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu", and sometimes the installer isn't even rendered properly (buttons, text and images are simply missing, like the program isn't yet fully loaded or something). In either case, I am unable to do anything because mouse input as well as keyboard input are not registering at all. The majority of cases, I am however able to move the mouse pointer around. Ctrl+Alt+F1 (the virtual terminals) are not working either because, as stated, keyboard input does not seem to register. I have downloaded the ISOs from 3 different mirrors, as well as via BitTorrent, resulting in 4 different ISOs, but they all have the same MD5 checksum, so I don't think that is the problem. I have tried the "Startup Disk Creator" in Ubuntu to create the bootable USB drive, as well as the command: dd if=ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso of=/dev/sdd bs=4M conv=fsync but all of the ISOs downloaded and the different ways of creating the bootable USB drive all give the same non-satisfactory results. [Bug 974620] [NEW] Accelerated playback on YouTube swaps red and blue color channels
Public bug reported: On YouTube, you can right-click the player and select "Show video info". An information box pops up and you can see if the video is being played back using hardware acceleration or software rendering. For me, it's usually played back using software rendering, but I just now installed the mplayer2 package, which depends on libvdpau1, and all of a sudden, I got hardware-accelerated playback. However, this swaps all videos' red and blue color channels. (Sky and water are red, and red things are blue, and people kind of look like smurfs, but green things remain green.) Upon removing the libvdpau1 package, the videos go back to normal, with red and blue in their proper place. I am using Google Chrome, which uses its own bundled version of the Flash plugin, but the problem also happens in Firefox which uses the Flash plugin installed on the system. I just grabbed the source for bash from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/. (http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-4.2.tar.gz) Opening the doc/bash.1 file with man, I noticed that this is the state of that paragraph in that source package: "Bash attempts to determine when it is being run with its standard input connected to a network connection, as when executed by the remote shell daemon, usually rshd, or the secure shell daemon sshd. [Bug 916944] [NEW] Every move/resize event by dconf-editor causes write to disk
Public bug reported: I opened dconf-editor and did some resizing and moving of the window to fit my screen a little better and so I could see fields/values a little better. I noticed (could hear) my hard drive doing a whole bunch of writes at the same time I was moving and resizing the window, so I got confused. It appears that ca.desrt.dconf-editor has some data fields ("height" and "width") that are updated very unnecessarily (at least I can't see a reason for it) when I resize the window. It does a whole lot more writes if I do the resizing very slowly too, and less writes if I resize fast. I guess since there are fewer events to the window manager. I haven't been able to find the values that deal with the position of the window, but I'm pretty darn sure that moving the window causes the same type of updating of data values. It behaves just like the height and width values as far as my drive is concerned. The drive responds in the exact same way. [Bug 911591] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes when resizing OpenGL window
Public bug reported: I have a couple of applications that I wrote myself. They are OpenGL graphics applications. One application uses SDL for OpenGL context management, and the other uses GLFW. When I resize the windows of these applications by dragging the window edges, gnome-shell crashes almost 100 % of the time after a certain amount of resizing back and forth. This does not happen when instantly resizing the window (e.g. with Alt+F10, which effectively does a resize as far as SDL and GLFW are concerned anyway). Rapidly resizing the window of glxgears does not seem to crash gnome- shell, which confuses me. I guess it is interacting with things differently or something. Anyways, I'm using the following versions of involved software packages: gnome-shell: 3.2.1-0ubuntu1.1 nvidia-current: 290.10-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 (from the ubuntu-x-swat PPA) SDL: 1.2.14-6.1ubuntu4 GLFW: 2.7.2-1 I'm thinking that maybe the two libraries I use (SDL and GLFW) create new OpenGL contexts every time when using their respective resizing mechanisms, whereas glxgears does something different, and requesting new contexts with new sizes too often during a small period of time might not go too well? Not sure at all what details I can provide regarding this problem. Hopefully someone can ask the right questions and I will be able to provide the necessary information. I will be very lucky if the applications were started from a terminal. That way the undecorated window of the terminal has focus after the crash, and I can relaunch gnome-shell from there. Any help is appreciated! Re: [Bug 787465] Re: View->Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04 and later in gnome-terminal
Dan: The emacs-style shortcuts you refer to are part of bash, so I don't think removing anything in gnome-terminal would be removing that functinality in bash, unless that was intentional, which would be very very mean. :( There already is an option available via gconf-editor, that has to do with menu mnemonics. Disabling menu mnemonics in gnome-terminal enables you to keep the menu bar and still have ALT+F and ALT+B be passed through to the application running in the terminal. But I definitely would want this to be a full-fledged option in gnome-terminal's preferences. That would be sweet. [Bug 863309] Re: Menubar always shown by default (although deactivated) (after upgrade)
skh: Well, the menu bar doesn't show in Unity3D for me either, but that's because the global menu takes over the menu bar. I see no menu bar in Unity3D even when the settings is set to *show* the menu bar, which in my opinion is a bug in itself (since I think the global menu is a huge bug...). [Bug 873763] [NEW] menubar settings for new terminals are ignored in gnome-shell
Public bug reported: In gnome-terminal settings, I always disable the "Show menubar by default in new terminals" option. This seems better ignored in Unity since it has its global menu anyway. But this option should not be ignored in gnome-shell, which it seems to be. I disable the option, open new terminals, but the menubar is visible! In the View menu, the "Show Menubar" option is unchecked. I have to *check* that option in the View menu, then *uncheck* it to finally get rid of the menubar in a terminal. [Bug 856538] [NEW] Unmaximizing by double-clicking moves window to the right of previous position
Public bug reported: If a window is maximized and then unmaximized by double-clicking on the menu bar ("panel" at the top of the screen in unity that houses the weird auto-hiding menus), the window is moved substantially to the right. If this is repeated enough times, the window will eventually maximize to the workspace to the right. [Bug 681387] Re: inconsistent behavior in gnome-terminal when changing font size in fullscreen
Oh dear, I forgot to check whether this was still a problem with Natty. I've been busy with work. [Bug 775113] Re: Custom time format in datetime applet cannot handle some format specifiers
#5: +1. Although as far as I'm concerned (as a user!) this is a regression. A regression of the "I want to be able to tell time by the same format as I did in the last version of Ubuntu" functionality. It doesn't seem fair that it would be enough to say it's just a documentation issue. That would be like upgrading from Office 2003 to Office 2007 and all of a sudden Word doesn't feature a WYSIWYG interface anymore, but wait, it clearly states in the manual on the CD/DVD that this is the case, so that means it's okay? Clearly most users would be like "wtf? No." :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/775113 Title: Custom time format in datetime applet cannot handle some format specifiers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/glib/+bug/775113/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 795792] [NEW] Switching to window at bottom of workspace below makes window jump to top of current workspace
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity I use a 2x2 virtual desktop grid that comes standard in Unity. Steps to reproduce: * Place a window[1] at the bottom edge of one of the two bottom workspaces, i.e. desktop (1,2) or (2,2) in the 2x2 grid. * Switch to the workspace directly above. * In the Unity "dock", click the icon representing the program you placed on the workspace below. * Observe the window appearing at the top of the current workspace! What should happen: The workspace should switch from the current workspace to the workspace below, which is where the window is located. What happens instead: The window is moved to the top of the current workspace. A video is attached to show the bug in action. Please note that the window does not have to be in the lower *right* corner. It can be anywhere along the bottom edge of the workspace. [1] nautilus, gnome-terminal and gcalctool are affected by this bug. However, I'm not getting this with Google Chrome windows, for example. So it might have to do with theming/edges of windows(?).
