[Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

Here's the grub that I use on 'doorstop' machines: # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update GRUB_DEFAULT="0" GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="true" GRUB_TIMEOUT="10" GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="elevator=deadline quiet splash plymouth.enable=0 libahci.ignore_sss=1 noefi" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="libata.force=noncq" GRUB_GFXMODE="1920x1200x24 It knocks a few seconds off of boot times, and shuts them down in a heartbeat. [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04
My biggest fear is that during one of these 'freezing' episodes my Samsung 850 SSD will remount the root partition as read-only. I've had several HDDs go read-only, over the years, and it's a PITA to recover from it, especially in RAID configs. Somebody will to need to handle this situation upstream. Two likely scenarios would be either a Linux kernel patch, and/or a firmware upgrade from Samsung. In the meantime, we're all sitting on ticking time bombs. @ Daniele Viganò (daniele-vigano) We're both experiencing the same shutdown problems -- same OEM -- same kernels -- same Samsung 850 SSDs. The only obvious difference is you have a Dell Latitude E5450 laptop, and I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF desktop. Since neither of us are experiencing shutdown problems with kernels <= 4.7, yes, I would judge that it relates to the bug(s) you listed above. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1594023 Title: Poweroff or reboot hangs. [Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04
Ran into this problem on my Dell 7010 i5 desktop machine, after doing a fresh 16.10 install -- first time it's happened with any OS that I've run on it. In my case, I'm getting DRDY ERRs on shutdown/restart. Hangs for several minutes with my SSD activity light lit up solid. Eventually the errors time out, and it shuts down, but it's a painfully long process. I downgraded the kernel to 4.4.x for shiggles. The LTS enablement stack, graphic stack, and so forth were foobar, of course, but it otherwise booted and shutdown normally. It smells like a kernel bug, to me, at this point. I'll investigate further and post back, if I can put a finger on it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1594023 Title: Poweroff or reboot hangs. [Bug 912558] Re: log.c Assert failed - err=number == EIO
I'm having this issue as well, on my Ubu 12.04 alpha 1 install. It happened after the 5-Jan-2011 update(s). I'm performing forensics now. The --no-log workaround (above) allowed me to boot into Ubu 12.04 I might also mention... I have two kernels installed on this machine - Linux 3.1 Linux 3.2 - and this init bug caused a kernel panic in both of them. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/912558 Title: log.c Assert failed - err=number == EIO To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/912558/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 912558] Re: log.c Assert failed - err=number == EIO
I meant to type 5-Jan-2012 (not 2011) above... sigh! Anyway, I thought I should also mention, immediately preceding the kernel panic/core dump, a little flashing white line appears in Plymouth... and the end of the animated dots. Never saw that before. After I implemented the --no-log workaround, the (previously) flashing white line was replaced with a message about CUPS, after which it continues the normal boot sequence, rather than crashing. Never saw that before, either. This odd behavior may, or may not, be indicative. Moreover, I don't have a printer installed on this machine (local or network). [Bug 778759] Re: package ca-certificates-java 20110426 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
I was marveling at why this error pops up, every time I reboot. It's happened enough times now, that I think I figured out why. When I'm in a session, I rearrange the order of my icons in the Launcher Panel -- add icons -- Keep in Launcher, et cetera. However, when I reboot, the error pops up, and my Launcher Panel reverts back to the default settings, as if I hadn't made any changes at all, e.g. default install settings. Summary: I *think* this error is precluding the Launcher Panel from saving the custom settings between boots. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778759 Title: package ca-certificates-java 20110426 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 720446] Re: possible memory leak in compiz when using places, dashboard
Sorry for being late to the party... :) I'm a Conky user (simple analysis program). Conky auto-starts at login, and I constantly monitor its output. I've been aware of a significant mem leak in Unity, since I first installed Natty, but was unaware of this bug report, until today. Luckily, I take frequent screenshots, so it was an easy matter to look back through my portfolio for mem usage. Here are some representative readings of Compiz usage, from 18-Feb (first install) through 9-Apr (today): 2 min 57 sec = 61.7 M 1 hr 53 min = 103 M 2 hr 48 min = 146 M 3 hr 10 min = 149 M 4 hr 31 min = 182 M This is a fair sampling, and clearly demonstrates (based on the screenshot dates) that the mem leak has been consistent and ever-present from the start. As Doug McMahon noted, it increases over time, regardless of user activity. I'll subscribe to this bug report, and watch it closely. If/when change(s) occur, I'll report back. The drop shadow on the top panel totally destroys the integrity of the desktop, when using the transparency feature. Also, the drop shadow doesn't gel well with the top of the Launcher Panel. I don't care for Empathy. I purged Empathy from my system and installed Pidgin, when I first installed Maverick. I check/install Maverick updates several times a day. I noticed, last week, that gcalctool was updated. Since then, gcalctool has not worked (won't open). Running gcalctool from CLI, I received the following error: GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.gcalctool' is not installed aborting... Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) When I purged gcalctool, I received the following error (truncated): Processing triggers for libglib2.0-0 ... No such schema `org.gnome.Empathy.conversation' specified in override file `/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ubuntu-artwork.gschema.override' When I installed gcalctool, I received the same error (truncated): Processing triggers for libglib2.0-0 ... No such schema `org.gnome.Empathy.conversation' specified in override file `/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/ubuntu-artwork.gschema.override' The workaround for me was: Install Empathy Install gcalctool Purge Empathy gcalctool is now working normally. Hope this helps! :) -- glib-compile-schemas trigger not run after installation GCalctool https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/602175 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This bug affects me too. But, I was running Aptitude-GTK at the time. -- BUG: scheduling while atomic: ldconfig/3042/0x1001 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/620747 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 530541] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb()
Did you test Ubuntu One out after rebooting? I deleted the pid file, rebooted and did not experience any couchdb problems until I tried to go into Ubuntu One. Then I got the same crashes as before. Problem not fixed on my system. Yes, I tested Ubu One (last night) and it worked fine. Here's the thing... When I just rebooted my system (for probably the 5th time in approx 24 hr) I'm back to getting the desktopcouch-service can't be started warning. However... Ubu One is still working. Dittos for Gwibber, Pidgin, et cetera. Everything is working except, I'm back to getting the (supposed) desktopcouch-service cannot be started dialog. Heh! This problem is a real corker, no?!?!? -- desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 530541] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb()
I don't know if this means anything to anybody, but... [Bug 530541] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb()
Hrm... If I'm reading the above correctly, desktopcouch-service is crashing twice (around midnight) then being ignored until (around midnight) the next day. So, now I'm thinking that deleting the pid file was simply a coincidence, e.g. mimicking a fix. Still, that doesn't answer why my Ubu One is working, regardless or whether (or not) desktopcouch-service is running. Maybe it's a bogus warning. I'll have to think about this for a while. LoL! I've (evidently) got 24 hours to come up with a solution...
Epilog: I was going to go play a flash game on Facebook, while I mulled this situation over, but while I was logging in, I thought, Duh! Why don't I follow the breadcrumbs??? I just looked at my /var/crash/ folder, and I had 3 files in there. One report was for a Plymouth crash (from when I first updated to 10.04 via the web) One report was for Gwibber (from 4-April) ... And, one report was for desktopcouch-service (see the path in the above text). The CoreDump is Base64 and unintelligible (to me). I wonder why we cannot submit these reports to someone. Okay, I'm going to go play Cafe World, and think about this some more. Carry on... :) -- desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 530541] Re: desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb()
Perhaps this will help: The content of the original file (that crashes) was simply '1837' The content of the new file (that doesn't crash) is '1528' Google'ing these numbers, they are evidently port numbers; thus using port 1837 (on my machine) is causing desktopcouch-service to crash. Using port 1528 always it to work. BTW, this is an 9:10-10.04 install, via web update (like many others above).
Update: I deleted my ~/.cache/desktop-couch/desktop-couchdb.pid file and it now works. I just tried this and it worked for me, as well. Kudos! Actually, I renamed the file (above) and it was regenerated during the next boot -- only, now it works, e.g. no desktopcouch-service crash/dialog box. Perhaps this will help: The content of the original file (that crashes) was simply '1837' The content of the new file (that doesn't crash) is '1528' Heh! These numbers don't mean jack to me, but it fixed the problem... -- desktopcouch-service crashed with RuntimeError in run_couchdb() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
