[Bug 2056686] [NEW] Wishlist - Backport AMD pstate support for Threadripper 3000 series CPUs

2024-03-10 Thread Vishal Rao
Public bug reported:

See the patch
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-
pm.git/commit/?h=linux-next=a51ab63b297ce9e26e3ffb9be896018a42d5f32f

Bug report is https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218171

Apparently it's for kernel 6.9 so this wishlist bug report is requesting
to backport it to the 6.8 kernel to be included in Noble (24.04 LTS).

[Bug 1916314] Re: HP Spectre x360 14-ea0xxx Tiger Lake Keyboard does not work until ~30-60 seconds after boot

2021-05-18 Thread Vishal Rao
Just wanted to post a comment here so others searching online might find
this workaround.

I have an HP Pavilion 14 dv0054tu laptop with an Intel Core i5 1135G7
Tiger Lake CPU and am facing this issue of the slow keyboard delay, not
responding for a few seconds after booting.

The kernel parameter "i8042.nopnp" appears to be working for me, after
trying several reboots.

This is on elementary OS 6.0 Odin beta based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with
the 5.8 kernel and also on openSUSE Tumbleweed with the 5.11 kernel and
Ubuntu and Ubuntu Budgie 21.04 also with the 5.11 kernel.

[Bug 542458] [NEW] plymouth ubuntu-logo theme script SetY/SetZ typo

2010-03-20 Thread Vishal Rao
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plymouth

See http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8997266postcount=411

I noticed a possible bug where logo.sprite.SetY is called in the third
lines where Alberto Milone probably wanted SetZ which was causing me a
little grief! Thats probably why he wrote that draw_logo() function with
the comment that plymouth doesnt seem to draw properly without this
because that function has it set properly

See line 148 (or there abouts) for logo.sprite.SetY (logo.z); as you
can see SetY called but setting it to logo.z

[Bug 542536] [NEW] nouveau kms vt switching broken

2010-03-20 Thread Vishal Rao
Public bug reported:

Vt switching broken with or without the xorg-edgers PPA. apparently
happened during the time nouveau was backported into the kernel instead
of being a separate module. Problem occurs even without plymouth etc so
it looks like just a nouveau/drm issue. Works (meaning KMS is disabled
so flickerful vt-switching works) if I set nouveau.modeset=0 in kernel
boot parameter.

[Bug 542458] Re: plymouth ubuntu-logo theme script SetY/SetZ typo

2010-03-20 Thread Vishal Rao
Another thing: Apparently the animate_progress() callback parameters
(progress, time) are reversed and it looks like this is an upstream doc
bug (if not plymouth bug itself) or just bugs in earlier themes written
and floating around causing people to copy the same problem.

By enabling the Debug() line it appears that progress is actually the
time (in seconds) the splash has been displayed on screen so the other
one looks like its the actual progress from 0.0 to 1.0 ...

2010-03-20 Thread Vishal Rao
We could continue this discussion on the forum but yes, that is the
working code.
Though the broken code (my guess) is at line 148:

logo.sprite.SetY (logo.z);

And there's a comment line 977 if a refresh function is not set,
Plymouth doesn't seem to be able to update the screen correctly but
it may just be due to that earlier typo... :-)

aha! so i found another user needing the same workaround!

i had mentioned this in this bug and another and also sent a patch to
LKML which wasn't
safe enough to go in and also blogged about it: http://lahsiv.net/blog/?p=47

On 15 March 2010 02:10, Richard Ayotte rich.ayo...@gmail.com wrote:
Setting libata.force=noncq fixed it for me. Disabling smart as describe
in the workaround or forcing pio4 had no effect.

 Hardware: Acer Aspire One

 Here's what I did.

 sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

 Change the line that says:
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
 to
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash libata.force=noncq

 sudo update-grub

 reboot.

[Bug 502219] Re: Kernel errors triggered with SSD storage

2010-01-26 Thread Vishal Rao
Confirmed to work at least for my Crucial 128 GB SSD model CT128M225.

Patch sent upstream to LKML and ATA subsystem maintainer Jeff Garzik,
see:

http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/1/26/185
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/1/26/202

If it gets dropped hopefully it might in essence be incorporated into Ubuntu
kernels
to improve the quality user experience of Lucid LTS just that little extra bit
:-)

[Bug 415888] Re: Installation fails on Crucial/Micron M225 256gb SSD

2010-01-21 Thread Vishal Rao
(posting this related, if not similar, issue as an FYI)

Folks, my problems are solved with Lucid 10.04 (alpha 2) and workarounds
- it looks like an NCQ issue, please go through the following
links/posts/threads:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/502219/comments/7
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8690795postcount=16

In short, pass the libata.force=noncq kernel boot option or
hopefully fix upstream with those lines to blacklist the crucial models
which don't work (maybe other brands/models too?)

[Bug 502219] Re: Kernel errors triggered with SSD storage

2010-01-19 Thread Vishal Rao
OK I think I know what's happening and I've fixed my issue!

I should have figured this out sooner but the problem is/was NCQ not
SMART.

I did a web search for failed command READ FPDMA QUEUED and saw some
references to NCQ, SSDs and all that jazz.

So all I need to do is pass the linux kernel boot paramter along with
the existing (unrelated) parameters quiet splash like:

[code]
quiet splash libata.force=noncq
[/code]

Intel does NCQ support right for sure. And OCZ is apparently blacklisted
already in the code it looks like that is why the above folks dont get
this error.

The place to backlist in linux kernel (.32 series) libata source would
be drivers/ata/libata-core.c around line 4252 with the existing OCZ
ata_blacklist_entry item:

[code]
{ CRUCIAL_CT128M225, NULL, ATA_HORKAGE_NONCQ },
[/code]

This blacklist just the 128 GB model which I have, I'm guessing the 64
and 256 models also need blacklisting with their own ID strings. I guess
you pass NULL for the firmware version string so it blacklists all of
them.

I will post this info on the Crucial.com forums and also on the forums
and see what happens from there.

Not sure if this should be fixed by blacklisting these Crucial M225
models in the libata linux kernel source or it should be fixed by
Crucial in perhaps a new model and/or BIOS update.

I hope Ubuntu devs might get this into the .32 kernel released with
Lucid to avoid headaches for other Crucial SSD users.

2010-01-19 Thread Vishal Rao
FYI, my (solved) problem is/was NCQ not SMART as you can see in this
comment in another bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/502219/comments/7

If you see failed command READ FPDMA QUEUED kind of logs in dmesg then
that might be for you...

Basically you need to pass libata.force=noncq to the linux kernel
boot param which I am doing but not sure what to do if people have
multiple drives some properly supporting NCQ...

[Bug 502219] Re: Kernel errors triggered with SSD storage

2010-01-16 Thread Vishal Rao
Update from my side after installing Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 2:

It does not seem to be related to bug #445852 or SMART because I tried
the workaround above to no effect and I also simply disabled SMART in
the BIOS to no effect. I still get the ata errors in dmesg as before.

Although it may not be significant/relevant, note that right after I
installed Lucid A2 I also updated the firmware on my Crucial 128 GB SSD
model CT128M225 from 1819 to 1916 which seems to help with perf issues
users of Win7 etc reported - it now has active GC along with TRIM.

I will now also post on the forums.crucial.com about these ata errors in
dmesg and see if they can do anything about it.

connection i thank you for working on this issue. note that it was me
who had attempted to mark this as a papercut then it was deemed too
complex to be a papercut and i didnt know how to un-mark it as a
papercut so that this bug would be tracked as a regular
usability/desktop experience problem. but i am glad that it is finally
being worked on because it was a really poor experience right at the
very beginning of ubuntu usage - the OOBE (out of the box experience)
installation part :-)

@colin: once/whenever you have some fixes done, do update this bug so
that i may test maybe a daily live iso image? otherwise i will only be
installing the next alpha 5 release but would be glad to test and give
feedback before then, should there be any updates...

also, i am hoping this is also picked up by kubuntu (which i use) and
other variants and not just ubuntu...

[Bug 151867] Re: vpn pptp on Kubuntu is not available

2009-04-10 Thread Vishal Rao
Thanks William,

Since my last comment I'd already realised you can install GNOME's
network manager after some online searches and especially after trying
Fedora 11 (KDE) beta and noticing the icon looked funny. I had to also
install gnome-keyring and gnome-keyring-daemon in addition to the
network-manager-pptp plugins. Then instead of ~/.kde/Autostart I edited
/etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop and appended KDE; to the list of
desktops in the line that read OnlyShowIn= and voila VPN/PPTP works
for me and so does static IP config. So I'm glad I can continue running
Kubuntu 9.04 since KDE 4.2 is looking very good indeed.

[Bug 334284] Re: Timezone map cities are incorrectly placed

2009-04-05 Thread Vishal Rao
Not fixed for India/surrounding areas in Ubuntu Jaunty amd64 daily live
CD iso either with md5 as 869a73d83c044116cb4b4f4a59882e37 approx Apr
3rd.

If you click around the center of India it selects Kolkata fine, but
sometimes selects Colombo (Sri Lanka). Not possible to select Colombo by
clicking Sri Lanka itself though. And impossible to select Nepal at all.
If you do manage to select India (Kolkata) it does not highlight the
timezone with the bright green band...

[Bug 334284] Re: Timezone map cities are incorrectly placed

2009-04-04 Thread Vishal Rao
Apparently not fixed for India in Kubuntu's jaunty-desktop-amd64.iso
daily approx Apr 3rd with md5 as bd45a7b1894034eaceba8684487c0445 both
starting the installer directly from grub or after starting a live
session.

Clicking anywhere in India either selects Kathmandu (Nepal) or Colombo
(Sri Lanka) and only if you click near Kolkata city in the east of India
does it select the right timezone. Only Nepal is highlighted correctly
not India nor Sri Lanka.

Will download and test Ubuntu Jaunty daily amd64 live image shortly in
case the fix is there but not yet in Kubuntu...

[Bug 294523] Re: Add an option to disable downloading langpacks

2009-03-28 Thread Vishal Rao
Unless I'm imagining things, I thought this was addressed during the
alphas, but while installing both Kubuntu and Ubuntu 9.04 beta with
selecting English it still wants to go online scanning the mirrors at
82%. This takes about 5 minutes which is annoying since the entire
install itself takes 5-10 minutes (excluding the scanning mirror part).
I then did the usual step before reinstalling of unplugging the ethernet
cable and the install seemed to finish fine and fast without the need to
scan the mirrors...

Can we still have this this as an option with a checkbox before the
release, or w... is it too late even though this bug/wish was
opened nearly 5 months ago?

Tom,

We will try to contact upstream author for any further fixups, but since this
is working quite well anyway,
I hope this evtouch package with your fixes will be included in Jaunty normal

Can you assign this bug to the relevant person(s) so that it gets in for
Jaunty? Is there any further action
required from us users/testers at this time?

Thanks much for fixing it so far!

2009-03-21 Thread Vishal Rao
Adding me too for India. Unable to select the IST (UTC+530) timezone
with incorrect highlighting. It's not important to be able to select the
traditional city (Calcutta/Kolkata) itself, just being able to click
anywhere in the red coloured country area should be fine. I will re-test
and report back once Jaunty Beta is released.

2009-03-18 Thread Vishal Rao
I tried installing from your PPA xserver-xorg-input-evtouch based on
xf86-input-evtouch - 0.8.8-0ubuntu2+thjaeger1 but the same problem
occurs. While calibration (and also during normal use) the min/max/x/y
numbers printed on screen don't change when tapping/moving the stylus
around, the taps themselves are registered but the position is
unrecognised.

[Bug 317127] Re: evtouch calibrate tool does not detect mouse position

2009-03-11 Thread Vishal Rao
OK, some progress! When I did a package update it got the thjaeger3
version, then I only restarted X (gdm). Now the taps were also going to
the right locations and the cursor following the pen movements! Except
the calibration was off a little. So I tried running the calibrate tool
and it would immediately return to the main session (with a quick text
flash which I think is the standard warning that you have another X
session running).

So I rebooted my tablet, but now again the taps have again lost the
ability to detect the position and the calibrate tool fails to run. It
worked before the reboot. Could it be some HAL fdi files conflict with
some other (evdev maybe) packages?

Attaching an archive with 2 xorg logs, one when attempting to run
calibrate after reboot, the .old one was run before reboot but just with
an X restart... let me know if other info needed.

[Bug 317127] Re: evtouch calibrate tool does not detect mouse position

2009-03-11 Thread Vishal Rao
OK calibrate works with the cursor in current directory, but only the X
axis (horizontal) portion is correct. The Y axis shows max as 6998 but
doesnt get reset to the actual max which is displaying as 3939. Plus I
think the min Y is also off... as a result tapping the pen anywhere on
the screen and the X (horizontal) position is correct, but the Y
(vertical) position of the cursor remains near the top third of the
screen in a small margin...

[Bug 317127] Re: evtouch calibrate tool does not detect mouse position

2009-03-11 Thread Vishal Rao
Ok, I edited /etc/evtouch/config and changed the MaxY from 6998 to 3939
and restarted X/GDM but no luck - probably something to do with the
d(x/y) numbers. But I rebooted and reran the calibration and this time
it also detected the MaxY and apparently as a result also set the dy
values much better... still not 100% accurate (few pixels off) but much
better!

[Bug 317127] [NEW] evtouch calibrate tool does not detect mouse position

2009-01-14 Thread Vishal Rao
Public bug reported:

I'm running Jaunty (alpha3-ish) on an HP Pavilion tx1302au tablet PC.

The calibrate tool that comes with xf86-input-evtouch 0.8.8-ubuntu1 runs
but does not seem to detect mouse position, only the taps are
registered.

As a result, after calibration, tapping anywhere on the screen results
in the pointer going to the top-left corner.

anything else is needed...

[Bug 294523] Re: ubiquity hangs 82% done configuring apt (scanning the mirror)

2008-12-25 Thread Vishal Rao
Can this bug be converted into a wishlist?

i.e. the installer should not go online if it detects a network
connection without first prompting/asking (or user selecting a checkbox
during configuration)... yes, the installer can mention its for
important security updates but still leave the choice to the user.

There are users in countries with slow Internet access or pay-per-MB
pricing who'd like to avoid using the connection during installation.

[Bug 263184] [NEW] wl driver doesnt work with kernel .27-2 and broadcom chipset

2008-08-30 Thread Vishal Rao
Public bug reported:

i have an hp tablet tx1302au with broadcom wifi chipset. installed
intrepid alpha4 (amd64) and updated it to get the latest and greatest
kernel .27-2

by default the wl restricted driver is installed enabled but does not
show up in network manager.

doing lsmod | grep wl only shows:

wl 1085520 0
ieee80211_crypt 14596 1 wl

shouldnt it also show some mac80211 line in there somewhere?

note: i tried wl on hardy (amd64) with this thread and it worked well
for me: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=880218

but in any case if i disable/blacklist wl and install b43 driver with
firmware my wifi works very well with networkmanager and all.

please let me know if i should be posting other output such as lspci
-nn, dpkg -l, dmesg, uname -a etc... will do that shortly...
