The installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on Dell Latitude E6510 goes fine, but
after start the screen stays blank. I guess open source drivers are
broken. The only workaround is to somehow install close source drivers.
I.e. but chrooting into system from live environment.

2011-01-01 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
I'm another affected user.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04.01 LTS.
KVM: KVM Switch is 4 Port and I cannot find any name... Supporting Resolution
up to 1920x1440.

OS with monitor connected via KVM switch goes to 1024x768 rather then to
1280x1024.

I've tried to enforce right resolution, but obtaining monitor edid via
get-edid|parse-edid to /etc/Xorg/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf file when
connected directly, but Xorg doesn't bother/cannot use them when
connected to monitor via KVM.

[Bug 689959] Re: Thunderbird after update lost all settings (pref.js file has been overwrited)

2010-12-14 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
I afraid I cannot send the file at the moment, as we it.

I'm familiar with pref.js file and it looked as new one, i.e. all path
were missing.

Rethinking whole situation what might happened.
- update wiped our pref.js,
- user started new version of Thunderbird,
- pref.js was empty, therefore Account Wizard started to ask for New account
settings and fill new pref.js with information.

It possible that I'm going to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my machine soon,
then I will probably could repeat the issue.

[Bug 689959] [NEW] Thunderbird after update lost all settings (pref.js file has been overwrited)

2010-12-13 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Recently one of my cooworkers updated Thunderbird 3.0 from 10.04 LTS to
latest version (AFAIR it was update from 3.0.6 to 3.0.10). After update
he lost all his mailboxes. During investigation of the problem we found
the all mailboxes were still in the standard location, but it's
description was missing from the pref.js file. It looked like the file
was overwritten during update. Lucky we had backup. Restoring the file
resolve the issue.

It reminded my father complains that after standard update of
thunderbird he lost all his mailboxes. He also use Lucida or one of it's
derivative.

[Bug 689684] [NEW] Enforcing usage of Vesa driver for Xorg seems not to work

2010-12-13 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
Public bug reported:

I try to autoconfigure Ubuntu using pressed. It fails for Xorg. Ubuntu
Nouveau drivers are broken for many of our machines (graphic cards),
therefore I wants to enforce usage of VESA. I use following line in the
pressed conf file:

xserver-xorg xserver-xorg/config/device/driver select vesa

but after installation Ubuntu starts X with Nouveau anyway.

Coutd you please advices the proper pressed command to enforce Vesa
drivers?

Part of my pressed related to X.
### X configuration
# X can detect the right driver for some cards, but if you're preseeding,
# you override whatever it chooses. Still, vesa will work most places.
xserver-xorg xserver-xorg/config/device/driver select vesa

# A caveat with mouse autodetection is that if it fails, X will retry it
# over and over. So if it's preseeded to be done, there is a possibility of
# an infinite loop if the mouse is not autodetected.
#xserver-xorg xserver-xorg/autodetect_mouse boolean true

# Monitor autodetection is recommended.
xserver-xorg xserver-xorg/autodetect_monitor boolean true
# Uncomment if you have an LCD display.
xserver-xorg xserver-xorg/config/monitor/lcd boolean true
# X has three configuration paths for the monitor. Here's how to preseed
# the "medium" path, which is always available. The "simple" path may not
# be available, and the "advanced" path asks too many questions.

confirm that patch from bug #647043 resolves your issue, therefore,
resolving that bug will address your problems as well.

I can agree that using term 'duplicate' is not 100% right in this
situation, the better name for relation would be 'depends on' or
'related to', but I don't think such options exist in Launchpad.

BTW. I marked 'duplicate' more bugs based on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/663182/comments/9.
IMHO it is easier to follow 1 bug entry with patch rather than 6. So
maybe there should be new bug entry titled 'Kernel regression causing
trouble for some Dell boxes' with list of the boxes and issues they
have.

[Bug 669730] [NEW] Buttons in gnome/gdm left-handed user 'lock screen' react only for left mouse button

2010-11-01 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
Public bug reported:

Recently, I have change my mouse setting to be 'left-hand mouse' in
Gnome (Ubuntu 10.4.1 LTS). After that my family found they cannot
switch user using "switch user" button if I was the person who had
locked the screen. I investigated situation a bit further and found
that I had to click right mouse button rather than left (standard one)
to initiate any action.

This is ridiculous, because you cannot expect people to know (and
remember) mouse settings of all other user having account on that
computer. On the other hand, on the 'lock screen' one button is enough,
so the best resolution will be threat all buttons as 'main' one (or at
least do not differentiate the left and right one).

[Bug 483932] [NEW] sound is broken in Ubuntu 9.10 KK

2009-11-16 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
Public bug reported:

The sound system doesn't work properly after re-installation to 9.10.

The are many manifestation of it. Two example
- Very often especially after any sound related operation (i.e. volume change)
sound is backing but strange noise similar to farts. I have to mute and unmute
sound to stop it.
- The sound doesn't without special reason. I.e. Today: The sound in Firefox
didn't work until I muted mysterious python plugin. I stopped to work again
after the truck finished that time I had to unmuted it.

I'm using Sound Card
02:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24/30
[CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)

and Microphone from USB Camera
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:08d9 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam IM/Connect

Both had worked fine with few recent Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, Fedora.

I guess it pulse or driver issue.

[Bug 465117] Re: Reporting a bug in 9.10 - some kind of joke

2009-10-30 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
First of all thank you quick action.

I see the point of your attempts but the effect is that the choice is
"not idea bugs report" (earlier) "no bugs report" (now).

Some comment what's wrong and how maybe makes it better:

1) WRONG: Assumption that it work in each situation! It quite obvious that it
failed somehow.
- So in such case it'll be nice to be able send you some report about it.
- Moreover, any foreseeing developer would prepare the VISIBLE button/link
"There something wrong. If you want you can use our web interface".

2) Wrong: Ignoring significant group of your users. I don't have
statistic, but I guess that many of people using Ubuntu can be describe
as 'power users'. It's nice that you are trying to do something for
normal people users, but why you forgetting about us? If you are simply
something could you please leave the "Advance option", where the people
can control option.

3) wrong: Design. I don't like mixing "OS level" and "Web level" way of
reporting bugs. I see the place for something like Apple "after crash"
tool in Ubuntu, but on the website "Report the bug" should mean "Report
the bug" not "Use this Tool from your desktop". How should I report bug

I think it would be really nice for average Joe's to make reporting
easier from inside the system. In one of the Menu i.e. System add new
entry "Report the bug". This entry would open the window with list of
running software, of course sorted in smart way. User choose application
add (or not) the note. In the mean time tool can start to gather
information about the OS. Really smart might be creating database with
running software, so the people who wants could report about software
which just crushed.

4) wrong? I think that you haven't test it enough. Lack of properly
testing. I guess that my problem with error report was cause by proxy. I
don't know, but because proxy causes many disasters in Linux I would say
it was the problem.

Sorry for being a bit nervous, but first touch of 9.10 nearly kill me. I think
I'll stop to use it as I don't like to be treat as an idiot and you are heading
this direction. I would describe that you are trying to make another Windows,
but without MS advantages.

Luckily, Linux is Open Source so I have a choice!

Any special action preceded the issue. We think that it might be related
to NVidia graphic card driver:

had been installed and suggesting that hpijs package support the HP 1018
printer.
I:
- installed hpijs with depends
- Ran Printer configure tool: a driver for HP 1018 hadn't been found
- so I chose suggested HP 1015 driver
- printer didn't react for send packages.

I was too prompt. It didn't worked. Next step download firmware.
Helped but no entirely.

This time it might be HPLIP fault, but I need to perform. Further tests.

Re: [Bug 217215] Re: HP LJ 1018 regression in hardy

2009-02-12 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
The situation is more complicated.

Short description.

There are two HP 1018 in my family (mostly because they should work
fine with Linux).
I have HP1018 in UK and my father in Poland. I think that until now
both of them didn't use Ubuntu packages.

Recently I reinstalled my Ubuntu and tried if the problem was fixed in
Ubuntu. After some attempts with HP Toolbox printer started to work.

In the meantime my father Ubuntu 8.04.1 crashed so badly that we had
to reinstall it. So I tried follow HP Toolbox path once more (HPLIP
guarantee support for HP 1018). We spent few hours without success. I
think that the problem was that we couldn't download firmware.

I decided to compare list of files with 1018 in a name on my father
and mine computer. I found one of following files missing on his:

/usr/share/hplip/data/firmware/hp_laserjet_1018.fw.gz
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-LaserJet_1018.xml
/usr/share/ppd/hpijs/HP/hp_laserjet_1018-hpijs.ppd
/usr/share/ppd/foo2zjs/HP-LaserJet_1018.ppd.gz

I copied it, but it didn't help.

After some time I tried to ran
/usr/sbin/hplj1018

on my father computer and it failed so I compared the files and fixed
my father one. After that printer started to work.

But it isn't working today. There are a lot of error message during
(slow) system start.

What I going to do:
Remove from my machine all the printer specific package and files and
start again.

[Bug 217215] Re: HP LJ 1018 regression in hardy

2009-02-11 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
@dwelch91:
I've changed the status to Invalid for HPLIP. I'm not entirely sure about it as
HP1018 won't work with hplip without change in /usr/sbin/hplj1018.

@palomme:
Yes you are right, I spent so long time to fix it that for any case I changed
all of /dev/usb entries.

Looks familiar, but I changed the path in two places in line 32 and 203.

[Bug 217215] Re: HP LJ 1018 regression in hardy

2009-02-11 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
It seems that in 8.10 the following file is broken

 /usr/sbin/hplj1018

It looks for lp in /dev/usb and should in /dev. I didn't save the
original one so I cannot provide patch at the moment.
