[Bug 1036401] Re: Apple magic mouse looses connection

2012-08-15 Thread Wolf Rogner
I have changed the package to linux. I looked up previous versions of
this bug and they all were related to the kernel.

#814250, #838926 and #849802 resp.

Unfortunately I never get a description of the solution. However, I can
remember that in that in #814259 Julian Wiedmann pointed out that an
erroneous patch was the cause of this. Handling of the input of the
magic mouse was done to accurate and this caused the mouse to stop
working.

maybe this helps locating the issue

[Bug 1036401] [NEW] Apple magic mouse looses connection

2012-08-13 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to kernel 3.2.0-29 the Apple magic mouse looses
connection again.

Similar symptoms as #821902 and previous. There seems to be a regression
bug in the kernel (as the bluetooth stack was not updated recently).

[Bug 280956] Re: [iwl3945] network manager looses connection to WPA2 router after some time

2012-08-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
As far as I am concerned, this still happens every now and then.

In my case, the connection gets reset and then the password dialog
appears. It has the correct password set (or entered) but still does not
reconnect. Only solution to this is:

sudo service network-manager restart

As I have pointed out in a previous version, the code reconnecting to a
WPA2 network uses the already encrypted key, encrypts it again and then
sends it. This will never work.

I haven't confirmed but am pretty sure that this code has never changed.

[Bug 998712] Re: domain name completion broken when dnsmasq is used

2012-06-08 Thread Wolf Rogner
Thomas,

I understand that you have not set up a simulation test bed and that
your questions are directed to understand the problem. You have found
out that you may have misinterpreted some pieces.

Reggie seems to have the same problem as I (and to my knowledge more
than a dozen of others) have.

I have described the issues dnsmasq has somewhere else.

Here is another observation I can offer:

eliminating dnsmasq makes machines respond within seconds. Network
reconnect after resume from sleep as well as after a reboot works
immediately. Thunderbird (another issue I submitted) connects to the
mail server without problems.

using dnsmasq, network reconnect (over WLAN) takes significantly longer (almost
5 secs).
Even though ping and dig resolv host names correctly (in out case s4 or
mail.rsb.intern) Thunderbird does not connect. That implies that the connection
dnsmasq and resolver libraries is broken as well. It works eventually (say
after 1min or 5, not preproducably different). Curiously it stops working again
even when the machine continues to operate.

Again: This was tested on several machines.
And, yes: Disabling dnsmasq in NetworkManager.conf resolves ALL issues at once:
Network reconnect in less than a second, name resolution to mail and
mail.rsb.intern works fine (what else should the search path hold?).

Referring to my reluctance of giving more than the basic information:
Everyone can read Launchpad entries. This is a severe security issue.

I try to be helpful but if you do not have the means to provide
significant testing equipment, maybe taking dnsmasq out of an LTS would
be the better solution.

[Bug 998712] Re: dnsmasq integration into name resolution broken

2012-06-04 Thread Wolf Rogner
Thomas,

there is no local named on any notebook here.

dnsmasq does not interfere with named on any of my machines.

It should actually not even be possible. As far as I am concerned, the
bind() request should return false and give an EADDRINUSE if the socket
was already bound by something.

Unless dnsmasq uses a different technique to attach itself to port 53.

Thomas, please understand that I don't have the time to reiterate on
situations that I have solved by reverting back to the original state. I
gave you enough hints to solve the issue. You can set up a situation
like mine in a bunch of virtual machines and simulate the effects.

I have a solution by disabling dnsmasq in network manager.

You might as well close this incident. But this will not fix the bug.

[Bug 998712] Re: dnsmasq integration into name resolution broken

2012-05-31 Thread Wolf Rogner
The /etc/resolv.conf held just a reference to 127.0.0.1

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 127.0.0.1
search rsb.intern rsb.at

I copied a working version over it:

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 10.1.0.4
nameserver 10.1.0.254
nameserver 195.202.128.3
search rsb.intern rsb.at

That way, name resolution worked immediately.
This brings back the old and stable name resolution. As far as I can observe
this, no side effects as you discussed in #1003842

So far I have disabled dnsmasq in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

Currently my view is that dnsmasq has some serious issues:

- name resolution in mixed DNS setups
- handling of refreshes of network manager (happens periodically with calls to
resolvconf, aperiodically when new SSIDs emerge, network media changes or the
machine is put into sleep mode)
- VPN management (which requires several different domains to be intersected)
- caching of resolved names
- handling of /etc/hosts

Hope this helps.

[Bug 1003842] Re: Precise NM with dns=dnsmasq breaks systems with non-equivalent upstream nameservers

2012-05-26 Thread Wolf Rogner
Simon Kelley might have written dnsmaskq with the assumption that all
DNS servers upstream have the same view about the namespace. However,
this is not how RFC sees it nor how it is set up in a majority of
installations.

Consider a small installation where the main server also serves DHCP
address leases and has to maintain DNS names. All names end in an
internal domain name domain.intern (like MS SBS not only recommends but
enforces). The DNS server is set up to forward unresolvable requests to
the upstream DNS server. Clearly the upstream DNS has no clue about
domain.intern addresses.

Why not set up DNS to use the internal server to serve all requests and
forward what cannot be resolved? Quite simple - speed and resillience.

If the internal server cannot answer the DNS request, the client
redirects the query to the next server. This eliminates the internal
server as a resolution bottleneck and allows the clients to continue
with a basic set of functionality in case of a server outage (planned or
not).

So now you easily have two separate DNS servers, on dealing internal
requests and one external.

In our case, the router binds DNS so that it can forward DNS requests.
This gives us extra resilience in case of a DNS server outage with our
main provider. We use the router to forward to a different DNS server.

Server down - No mail, no fileservices, no printing services, no database BUT
Internet access still works
Router down - OK, we have a problem
Upstream DNS down - No problem at all

Also our internal DNS server serves requests to our own external domain
as well as some others. So it definitely does not have the same view as
upstream DNS. None of this violates RFC definitions.

@callegar: I agree with you: If dnsmask handles DNS resolution it MUST
resolve the issue. That means either Kelley adapts his position or
dnsmask has to go.

@jdthood: As a user I wasn't asking for dnsmask. It was chosen to
improve DNS resolution. Which it does not. In a LTS release this is
pretty hard (it is pretty hard in any release). Good design not only
suggests but enforces that if a technology substitutes a predicessor it
is required to provide a fallback in case of error.

Commenting dns=dnsmask in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf is a
workaround but certainly not a solution.

Finding an automatism to resolve different DNS resolution paths would be
the responsibility of the programmer in my (simplified) view.

2012-05-24 Thread Wolf Rogner
commenting dns=dnsmasq out in the NetworkManager.conf leaves the
/etc/resolv.conf file intact.

I will test this on my other machines.

Unfortunately, the upgrade changed this setting to use dnsmasq.
It also is set in the default installation.

It solves my problem, thanks.
It creates another problem: Changing this setting in 2+ PCs.

We'll see

[Bug 997076] Re: network manager not in sync with DHCP and local resolv.conf

2012-05-22 Thread Wolf Rogner
Sorry Mathieu,

this behaviour might be correct from the dnsmask point of view. It does
not work from the system or users point of view.

Thunderbird and ssh do not resolv correctly (to name but two that my
users regularly use)

ping does not resolve correctly either. I have not even tried to find
more applications and tools that do not work but there are a lot.

Network manager starts dnsmask with --no-resolv to ignore
/etc/resolv.conf

That can be changed immediately to resolve this issue. If the
resolv.conf file is left in order, things would work.

I am slightly disappointed that changes (that might be useful and
required) are not communicated in advance to all parties that rely on
the basic foundations. DNS resolution is basic.

Just to give you an insight into the consequences:

I have a client with 2+ PCs. They have issues every day since 12.04.
If they had rolled out 12.04, they would have had 4 calls per day on
their help desk (currently 300 - 500). My client tells me, my
recommending Ubuntu was incorrect (basically boils down to I'm not worth
my money) and the situation proves that Ubuntu / Linux is a playground
for freaks.

So thanks for ruining another chance to establish open source by giving
me and others a broken solution, a broken excuse and a broken design.

/personal frustration

Certainly, if I manually adjust /etc/resolv.conf everthing works fine

chance to use a wired LAN recently and it seems to be the same issue
there).

My guess would be that network manager and dns-mask do not work together
in all cases (in fact, they do cooperate only in just one case, after a
reboot). As I never reboot machines (if I don't have to), I put machines
to sleep, connect, disconnect, I practically never run into the optimal
situation.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 998712] [NEW] dnsmasq integration into name resolution broken

2012-05-13 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

dnsmasq does not resolve DNS names correcty.

Applications like Thunderbird or tools like ssh rely on working name
resolution. However, if there never was a working name resolution,
dnsmasq never gets to know about the DNS names.

Setup:

private network: 192.168.0.x/24
domain mydomain.intern
server: 192.168.0.1 hostname s1
dhcp (.100 - .200) and bind running, postfix and dovecot running
client: 192.168.0.100 (dhclient)

/etc/resolv.conf
...
nameserver 127.0.0.1
search mydomain.intern

/var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf
server=192.168.0.1

Open Thunderbird - Thunderbird fails to open s1
ssh admin@s1 - ssh: Could not resolve hostname s1: Name or service not known

Adding
nameserver 192.168.0.1
to /etc/resolv.conf

resolves the issue immediately

calling sudo resolvconf -u

creates the lookup problem immediately again

This is a critical error

[Bug 998712] [NEW] dnsmasq integration into name resolution broken

2012-05-13 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

dnsmasq does not resolve DNS names correcty.

Applications like Thunderbird or tools like ssh rely on working name
resolution. However, if there never was a working name resolution,
dnsmasq never gets to know about the DNS names.

Setup:

private network: 192.168.0.x/24
domain mydomain.intern
server: 192.168.0.1 hostname s1
dhcp (.100 - .200) and bind running, postfix and dovecot running
client: 192.168.0.100 (dhclient)

/etc/resolv.conf
...
nameserver 127.0.0.1
search mydomain.intern

/var/run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf
server=192.168.0.1

Open Thunderbird - Thunderbird fails to open s1
ssh admin@s1 - ssh: Could not resolve hostname s1: Name or service not known

Adding
nameserver 192.168.0.1
to /etc/resolv.conf

resolves the issue immediately

calling sudo resolvconf -u

creates the lookup problem immediately again

This is a critical error

[Bug 997913] Re: thunderbird fails to connect to mail server

2012-05-12 Thread Wolf Rogner
Hi Patrick,

1. it is reproducable over several machines
2. After restarting server and client it works fine for some days, then appears
and gets worse (in the beginning, restarting Thunderbird works, later not)
3. Evolution or any other mail client works fine (currently I check my mail
with an iPad)
4. I run a Ubuntu server with bind and dhcpd
5. no VPN (which fails as well btw)
6. I do run a WiFi network (see IwConfig.txt above)

I have files a bug with network manager as thunderbird people suggested
it be a network problem (which appeared to be the case)

After a reboot my /run/nm-dns-dnsmasq.conf looks like this

server=10.1.0.4
server=10.1.0.254
server=195.202.128.3

My /etc/resolv.conf like this

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 127.0.0.1
search rsb.intern rsb.at

After a while however (sometimes more than an hour) it looks like this

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 10.1.0.4
nameserver 10.1.0.254
nameserver 195.202.128.3
search rsb.intern rsb.at

I cannot reproduce this by calling resolvconf -u manually.

If I try to simulate this by manually copying the correct name servers
into /etc/resolv.conf, Thunderbird connects without any problems.

Thus it seems to me that the new dnsmasq mechanism has not cought on to
Thunderbird.

I hope this helps you clearing the issue.

[Bug 997076] Re: network manager not in sync with DHCP and local resolv.conf

2012-05-11 Thread Wolf Rogner
Would love to but currently things work as required. I have to wait till
problems emerge again.

My /etc/resolv.conf contains:

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
nameserver 10.1.0.4
nameserver 10.1.0.254
nameserver 195.202.128.3
search rsb.intern rsb.at

Even on a fresh install it looks like this.

It looks like you suggested only when connection is not possible.

[Bug 997076] [NEW] network manager not in sync with DHCP and local resolv.conf

2012-05-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Network Manager does not use the DHCP information delivered by a DHCP server.
Name servers and other information are not utilised.

The dhclient.leases file, resolv.conf and nm-dhclient-eth1.conf (I use a
WLAN wlan0) show different information about name servers and domain
names.

Thus settings that rely on any internal server names do not work.

[Bug 989900] Re: DNS Resolve Problems in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-05-06 Thread Wolf Rogner
Same symptoms

Connection to my mail server with Thunderbird fail regularly.

Ccamporas workaround did not work though.

resolvconf -u updates the file /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf but leaves
out the domain information (which DHCP delivers).

[Bug 991692] [NEW] screen too bright after resume from suspend to RAM

2012-04-29 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Opposed to the known issue in the release notes, suspend to RAM works
fine.

New: The machine falls asleep, wakes up for an instance and then returns
to sleep.

On resuming later, the screen is at full brightness, even when adjusted
to a dimmed level.

(Awkward, as 12.04 is generally brighter, one gets nearly blinded).

Not critical but anoying

[Bug 975858] [NEW] File creation on iPAD iTunes folder works incorrectly

2012-04-07 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Copying files onto iPAD works fine.
Unfortunately
- the files are not renamed correctly (4 letter acronyms),
- the sqlite database is not updated correctly
- some folder are created using lower case (f04 instead of F04 which already
exists).

Thus, music copied from Ubuntu is on the iPAD but can neither be seen
from the Music player nor played with any other application.

Otherwise, Rhythmbox and iPAD work togehter fine.

[Bug 905786] [NEW] network manager looses wireless connection, reconnect not possible

2011-12-17 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

After a certain time (approximately 8-12h) the wireless connection is
dropped. A reconnect does not work.

I have reported a similar issue with NM 0.7x and 0.8. The issue then
was, that the connection password for WPA2 was encrypted twice.

Was fixed in later releases and now it's back.

I haven't had time to verify in the source code but from what I see,
this seems pretty much the same bug.

Mitigation:

disable wireless
rfkill unblock all
enable wireless

(disable should not block wlan either)

[Bug 902085] Re: Libreoffice Calc conditional formatting error

2011-12-10 Thread Wolf Rogner
I am sorry that my patience is very limited with this one.

I think the steps in my description pretty much tell you what to do.

Just try to conditionally format a cell to green background if it
contains a specific value: ZILCH

Try to format two cells to red and green according to two specific
values (say 1 and 0) but leave a third cell blank: ZILCH

Now turn to the Monopolists spreadsheet application and look how it
works (for my expected behaviour): YEP

I elaborated on this error once. It got fixed, fine. Now its here again.
What shall I take from this.

Christopher, I'd be greateful if you just tried it yourself and then ask
questions if you cannot reproduce.

[Bug 902085] [NEW] Libreoffice Calc conditional formatting error

2011-12-09 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Conditional formatting in LibreOffice does not work correctly.

This error was corrected in OpenOffice and reappeared in LibreOffice.

Test:

Enter a cell value of 1 and a value of 2 in the next value
Mark 3 cells (on including no value)
Conditional format 1 to background green, 2 to background red and empty to
background gray.

Use equal to, use less than or greater than, it does not work.

What works is that the cell gets coloured green if you say: not equal
to: 1

However, combining negatives does not work either.

[Bug 887440] Re: Firefox hangs in Oneric

2011-11-20 Thread Wolf Rogner
I don't think that this is an opinion if it happens regularly, on any
machine I tried (both 32 and 64 bit).

Here are some more hints:

It happens every third page when connected to Outlook web access. There
are some controls originally written in ActiveX and reimplemented in
JavaScript that cause Firefox to hang.

Similar pages (e.g. developed with Visual Studio) trigger the same
behaviour.

Additionally, pages relying strongly on Adobe Flash Controls hang as
well. However, I did not pin them down so far.

Currently we develop a web site using Jquery, Dojo and other Toolkits.
Pages that use them in combination get stuck as well (5 to 6 calls, then
a hang for approximately 1 min).

Also Firefox hangs in a Mutex_wait indefinitely after 5 to 6 launches.
This to me looks like a dead lock somewhere (without having looked into
the code of course).

I am happy to do further investigation if someone provides the
direction.

btw: None of this happens with Chromium.

[Bug 887440] [NEW] Firefox hangs in Oneric

2011-11-07 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Every other page firefox will hang for approximately 1 - 2 minutes.
There is no indication that the same page hangs
It does not come regularly (sometimes, calling 10 to 20 pages works fine,
sometimes it happens after the second page, no longer than 30 pages called)
System Monitor indicates firefox process being Sleeping with
poll_schedule_timeout (not very informative)
Compiz renders the windows gray
I happened only after upgrading to Oneric

Chromium does not show any of these signs (I did a parallel test on
this)

Just to answer in advance:

It happens also if the extensions are turned off (except of Global Bar
Integration and Unity Firefox extension which I left on).

[Bug 885716] [NEW] External display not detected on Macbook Pro

2011-11-03 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

On my MBP 6.2 the external display is not detected properly (It works fine with
MacOSX, so no hardware issues).
Sometimes the display is found, sometimes not. After a reboot it is found more
frequently than after wake from suspend.

If detected, the display gets extended (not a copy of the screen like on other
OS's). This raises issues with mouse.
Also the avant bar gets screewed up regularly (because of screen metrics).

My internal display is 1650x1080, the external is 1024x768 (which may
cause the avant problems).

My expectation how the thing works would be: Plug in an external monitor
and see a resized copy of the desktop immediately. Configurable, the
display might be extended. However, I do not expect to go to a control
panel to detect a display and apply settings.

Also having an option offered that cannot be selected (Separate X-Window
view) is not really an option. If selected, all window decoration and
functionality is lost.

[Bug 814250] Re: Apple Magic Mouse stopped working

2011-09-11 Thread Wolf Rogner
I still cannot use my mouse.

Trackpad stops to react regularly as well.

I don't care whether it is Bluetooth or the kernel (in my syslog, the kernel
associates the mouse to the wrong handle.
This behaviour has been the same every time the mouse stopped working. This
time, even regular Mighty mouse from Apple stopped working.

There is lots of goings on here while I cannot use my mouse. I presume,
others are too tired to report this situation.

Btw. the status claims this bug being fixed. Reproducably not for me.

Sorry jrp for contradicting you.

I run Natty and the bug reappeared on August 29th after an update.

There is some library of sorts that messes things up (as the kernel was
left untouched.

Currently, not even my other bluetooth mouse works.

[Bug 837206] [NEW] Apple wireless mouse not working

2011-08-30 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

After upgrading Ubuntu yesterday, my Apple wireless mouse stopped working again.
Last time, it was an error in the kernel, this time, it looks like an error in
libbluetooth3 or any of the bluez stack (as these were the only libs upgraded).

[Bug 821022] [NEW] Unity wakeup from suspend corrupts screen and deactivates mouse

2011-08-04 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

Sending Unity to suspend and reactivating provides artefacts on screen
where the ribbon is (I use a hidden setting, making the bar disappear if
not used).

Also the Apple magic mouse does not respond after wakeup.

Workaround for issue 1: show the ribbon and hide it again.
Workaround for issue 2: turn mouse of and on to reconnect via bluetooth.

[Bug 814250] Re: Apple Magic Mouse stopped working

2011-07-27 Thread Wolf Rogner
I'm 51 years now and swore never to install an untested kernel on a
production machine (even my laptop).

Call yourself lucky that I broke my promise.

The kernel works (as far as I can see), the mouse works fine.

However, there is this old error in it that touching the mouse pad by
accident will erratically erase typed text (the mousepad is deactived
during typing in the control panel).

This has already be eliminated.

Does that help?

[Bug 696706] Re: `unison -ui graphic' does not show password dialog

2011-07-27 Thread Wolf Rogner
Some comments on this.

1. Unison is the only useful equivalent to Microsofts offline files. Using a
notebook it is mandatory to use a file synchroniser
2. Installing the 2.40.63 on the client does not help. The server version is
required as well. This means installing unofficial software both on a line of
clients and untested software on a server. In a production environment nothing
that a serious administrator would do lightheartedly
3. RBredereck suggested a solution. For something that broke some month ago and
that is that essential, the attitude towards fixing is astounding.

I start asking myself why I use a stable distribution if I can have
technical experiments by installing from scratch?

[Bug 814250] Re: Apple Magic Mouse stopped working

2011-07-22 Thread Wolf Rogner
Having investigated a little I am quite surprised that a kernel update is sent
out with a serious flaw as a failure of the mouse.
The bug was known in kernel 2.6.38.8 and reappeared in 2.6.39.1

I experimented a little more:

Attaching an Apple Mighty Mouse works fine. A /dev/input/eventX is generated
that connects to the /dev/input/mouseY.
Attaching an Apple Magic Mouse does not create the event device. The mouse
device is created but there is no input stream.

The problem occurs regularly (Ubuntu 9.04, January 2010, now).

Hope this gets fixed soon

[Bug 776662] Re: network-manager-gnome crashes on logon after the last update

2011-05-10 Thread Wolf Rogner
I have waited several days and updated everything that came along.

Today I upgraded the last remaining libpanel-applets to the last version
6.5

No freeze happens.

I have no idea why the machine froze. It did and there is nothing I
could do about it. It doesn't now.

So, feel free to close this incident.
