[Bug 494353] Re: Unable to get Linksys WPC54G wireless card to work out-of-the-box
I searched for other bugs, and if there was something similar, it wasn't obvious to me. itismike, Ok. That sort of makes sense now. Unfortunately, I still have two issues with the dialog that is presented, as of the Lucid Beta: 1) The dialog is still pretty confusing, with lots of poor word choices, and poor explanations for end users. 2) The button to show the unwrapped password didn't work for me in the Lucid Beta (fresh install); it did nothing. [Bug 494353] Re: Unable to get Linksys WPC54G wireless card to work out-of-the-box
Ok, progress. I'm now testing Lucid Lynx (Beta 1, I believe), and the chipset is identified out-of-the-box. That's a big step, but the firmware is a separate issue, as it is incomplete out-of-the-box and the package b43-fwcutter must be installed to download the firmware. To resolve this bug, there still needs to be some kind of visual mechanism to engage the end user in the process of downloading the firmware, if so desisred, so that the apt-get install method isn't (manually) required out-of-the-box. I need to check to see if there's another bug covering that remaining functionality. If so, I can consider this bug closed. -- Unable to get Linksys WPC54G wireless card to work out-of-the-box https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494353 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As I stated in the question version of this bug, this issue is not resolved. The dialogue presented to the user is in no way user-friendly, and provokes the response that is seen here. [Bug 495339] Re: Passphrase not verified for encrypted homes
Dave, Not sure I'll be able to clarify much for you. Now that the install is complete, I have no plans to retry until it's necessary. Am reporting the bug because I'm hoping to avoid potential issues in the future. I don't think I did anything fancy. I just installed Karmic from the CD installer. I found an option in one of the steps that allowed for encrypted homes, so I enabled the option. I don't remember after that point when I was prompted for the passphrase. It may have been during the install itself, but more likely, as I'm gathering from other sources, it was launched post-install by a notification window. The prompts weren't from a full-fledged GUI like GTK, but I don't remember if it was a shell script or some kind of ad-hoc widget. When I was prompted for the passphrase, I wondered if it would ask me to confirm. Since I wasn't sure, I was careful entering the passphrase, but after hitting enter to accept the passphrase, I wasn't prompted to verify. I expected a second prompt to verify the passphrase entry (like passwords are verified). I feel like I'm repeating myself, so if there's something specific you're looking for, please let me know, and I'll see if I remember. If you have a machine that you could set up to test this, then perhaps you could actually reproduce this, as I don't think this is an intermittent problem. Based on bug 359997, I would venture to say that the issue should be reproducible on a test install image by running the ecryptfs- unwrap-passphrase script. -- Passphrase not verified for encrypted homes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 494353] [NEW] Unable to get Linksys WPC54G wireless card to work out-of-the-box
Public bug reported: I own a Linksys WPC54G V3.1, a PCMCIA wireless adapter which I understand is based on a Broadcom chipset. The card doesn't work out-of-the-box, and while I'm not sure it's the appropriate thing to do, I've tried installing the Synaptic package bcmwl-kernel-source. Installing this package superficially appears to have built and installed a kernel module, however, when I tried inserting the card, both before and after a system restart, I don't get any indication that a wireless network is available. dmesg seems to recognize the card insertion, but I don't see any significant follow-on activity. I've seen a number of online posts about this card and chipset, but most of the threads are old, and do not address how to get this card working under Karmic. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Unable to get Linksys WPC54G wireless card to work out-of-the-box https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494353 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 355389] Re: Software Center (and Add/Remove Applications) have duplicate listings
@mac_v: I welcome a more respectful atmosphere, but it can't be one-sided. That's the message I was trying to get across to you in comment 10. It's really disappointing that I'm having to fight so hard to be heard, when I'm not really even an average user. Thank you for taking a serious look at this. I'm not sure what you are referring to above when you mention text in brackets. I created the list using Add/Remove Programs, since Software Center apparently isn't part of the Xubuntu desktop. If there are brackets, I'm not seeing them. I'm seeing a one-line program name and a one-line program description, and in all the cases I listed they were identical AFAICT. I accepted that parenthetical differences in version and desktop environment/toolkit meant that they were different packages; the would have been longer otherwise. I assume there are superficial textual differences that I'm not seeing in Add/Remove Programs that probably are displayed in Software Cente in brackets. I agree with your assessment that there are multiple problems going on. Based upon your evaluation it seems that there are 5 categories of issues, and some of them definitely seem out of scope of Papercuts: 1) Different apps 2) Same app, same package 3) Same app, different version number 4) Same app, auxiliary package (-data) 5) Same app, different toolkit I've listed them in what I feel is least acceptable to most acceptable order. Here's a brief rationale: Group #1: Different applications should have obvious differences. Usually the name should be different, but on the rare occasion when they aren't, descriptions (short and long) should be. In the commercial world, disambiguation could usually be effected by mentioning the vendor. We could use author in lieu of vendor, but one expects the descriptions to actually have some character as well. Group #2: Not sure this is actually happening, but if it is, it's inexcusable. At the very least it represents duplication of packaging effort. This group should be completely eliminated. Group #3: This is pretty silly. The entire point of a distribution is to pick best-of-breed software and eliminate unnecessary choice for the user. I think there are three basic use cases here: stable user, bleeding-edge user, and advanced user. Of the three, only the advanced user will want to have two different versions at the same time, and there are other means for achieving this, so I think troubling normal users is uncalled for; a choice is required. This will probably take a spec and a lot of work to resolve to advanced users' satisfaction, however. Group #4: These actually make sense to have a separate package for, but I'm not sure why they have the same name and description. I have no opinion on what to do with these in the UI in the long run, but I would start by giving them better names and descriptions. Group #5: These are actually different packages, but it is still confusing. This one seems tricky, and I'll have to read the link you provided. Again, though, I would start by making sure the descriptions mention the desktop environment/toolkit dependency to give the user a fighting chance. I disagree with your framing this as not a typical workflow, but I respect it. IMO, virtually every user will use the Software Center and/or Add/Remove Applications. Especially if they stay with Ubuntu. I consider it just as integral to the experience as something like Nautilus. It seems Canonical would agree; otherwise, why put so much effort into it? Since I would be satisfied if descriptions were modified to be unique in both Software Center and Add/Remove Applications, and since that still seems readily solvable for the list of 27+1 we've documented, I propose that we solve that issue as a Papercut, and spawn longer-running bugs for the groupings listed above, as necessary. [Bug 355389] Re: Software Center (and Add/Remove Applications) have duplicate listings
@mac_v: I really don't know how to respond in a way that you will take seriously. It's clear from the past rejections that you don't take my input seriously and aren't willing or able to check the facts for yourself. I gave you the benefit of the doubt for three months when I thought you were wrong about this issue being in Karmic (comment 3), until I could verify this for myself. I expected that I would get the same benefit of the doubt, or at least be given the opportunity for a dialogue. That didn't happen. Apparently mac_v knows best. In the latest installment, 1) mac_v says This is not a system-wide problem. Huh? As I have indicated before, this affects both Software Center and Add/Remove Programs, and has persisted across installs of both Jaunty and Karmic. I also indicated that this affects not just mountmanager, but many other applications as well (comment 6). It also affects Xubuntu in addition to Ubuntu*. I have no idea what your definition of system-wide is but it seems like the above would be more than enough for most reasonable people to consider system-wide. 2) mac_v says This isnt even an app-wide problem. I don't even know what this means. In any case, the link you have pointed me at twice (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut) makes no mention of this as a criterion. 3) mac_v says This is a bug in 1 particular app and in 1 specific app listed in the app out of the 1000's of apps listed! Not true. Because you weren't able to take me at my word, I went to the trouble today of making a list. I didn't include what I consider near- matches, and I may have missed a few, but here it is: -Back In Time -Chess -Content Filter -GDebi Package Installer -Gnu Octave -Hardware Drivers -Image Viewer -KImageMapEditor -KLinkStatus -KOffice -KPlato -KPresenter -Krita -KSpread -KWord -KXSLDbg -Language Support -Licq -Mailody -Mines -MountManager -PCP Charts -Qalculate! (3 copies) -System Monitor -Terminal -USB Startup Disk Creator -Xabacus I count 27. 27 1. 4) mac_v says The chances of this affecting the user is quite less. This is not something which is going to greatly improve/impact the usability of the OS in general. So, suppose there are 1000 apps listed. Then the average rate at which these duplicates occur is 2.7%. If the average user only randomly looks at (conservatively) 20 apps in Software Center over the course of their usage of Ubuntu, the chance that they are affected is 1-(1-0.027)^20 = 42%. That's for any one arbitrary user looking at 20 random apps! If the average user looks at 30 apps, the percentage increases to 1-(1-0.027)^30=56%. Impact? Was that a criterion for Papercuts? I don't see it in the link you gave. In fact, if it required a big impact, wouldn't that make it more than just a papercut? A laceration, maybe? In any case, this seems to be up there on par with ugly misspellings and inconsistent naming conventions, which seem to already have been accepted for previous papercuts projects. And, as I've mentioned previously, I'm not the only one who's noticed the problem. Surely you're not suggesting that this isn't confusing to new users? So, there we are mac_v. Now you know where I stand. Reject it again. I dare you. Then I can say Screw you Ubuntu and really mean it. I'm sure you can come up with some new excuse; I'm rooting for ya. You wouldn't really be a good gatekeeper if you actually read the bug and considered it objectively, would you? You didn't really want me to contribute to Ubuntu either, did you? Because that's just annoying, when all these people keep finding problems and telling you about them, and expecting you to read what they've written before making a snap judgment. It's much easier to shoot first and ask questions later. Yeah, keep doing that. That's working. [Bug 474134] Re: gnome-system-monitor shows blur window in Xubuntu Karmic.
Am having the same problem. First on upgrade from Jaunty, then on fresh install of Karmic. From the command line, I'm getting a warning about SELinux when I start gnome- system-monitor. Tried fixing that in the Jaunty upgrade by installing SELinux, but I think that conflicts with AppArmour, and I eventually managed to hose myself, forcing the fresh install of Karmic. I'm seeing a similar problem in the Notify OSD applet, and I was seeing this under my initial (Gnome) installation of Ubuntu. I've since switched to the xfce-desktop, and I'm still seeing the issue. I suspect this has something to do with the framebuffer. I was also seeing a more widespread issue from the Karmic Gnome Desktop before I turned off effects (turned off compiz?). The machine in question is a Dell Latitude C610. This is definitely a regression from Jaunty. [Bug 407853] [NEW] Unable to use TRENDnet TEW-221PC out-of-the-box
Public bug reported: As was suggested by Leann Ogasawara on bug 105247, I am filing a new bug to resolve the issue I am having with my wifi card, as that bug has been closed for non-responsiveness of the reporter. I own a TRENDnet TEW-221PC, and I'm told it is supported by the ADM8211 wifi driver, however, the card is not working for me out-of-the-box, and I was told at one point in the past that it should. I believe that was when Ubuntu picked up the adm8211 kernel drivers. I'm currently running Jaunty Jackalope, and I suspect the PCMCIA card because my USB adapter seems to work fine between the same computer and access point. The activity light blinks, but I don't seem to get a link indication, and the network manager doesn't seem to indicate a wireless network. [Bug 105247] Re: (Feisty) ADM8211 wireless driver not working
I'm unsure whether it is related or not, but I am having difficulties getting my ADM8211 card to work with the newly minted Jaunty Jackalope on a fresh install. I have a USB wireless device that browses the local network fine, but the ADM8211 doesn't. It doesn't even appear to be correctly recognized. Unfortunately, I haven't been using that card with Ubuntu for a while, so I don't recall exactly, but I believe I was successfully using this device with Ubuntu a while back. Feisty, perhaps? [Bug 355822] [NEW] Can't assign workspace names in baseline Ubuntu 8.10
Public bug reported: First off, I should say that I'm not an expert. I had an old install of Ubuntu that I used infrequently; I believe it was 7.04. Mostly, I was using Windows, and had installed Wubi. I believe the Wubi install was 8.04. Anyway, Windows crashed (see my boot.ini report for details), and I couldn't recover Windows (or Wubi). I've spent all weekend re- installing Windows to a new hard disk, downloading Service Packs, Anti- Virus upgrades, and so on, and figuring out how to set up grub to not step on Windows. Since I couldn't dist-upgrade 7.04 directly, I downloaded a Ubuntu 8.10 ISO, and installed from it. So, I now have what I believe is a new, fairly stock dual-boot system. The problem I am having now is that I can't figure out how to rename my workspaces. I used to be able to do this, although I'm not sure whether it was under 7.04 or 8.04. From chats on IRC with Brucevdk, I currently understand the situation to be this: compiz doesn't support the renaming the same way MetaCity did. As I understand it, the window manager switched underneath me, and the functionality went away. Brucevdk pointed me at bug 129152, but the bug is closed, discussion there is long and muddled in separate issues, and seems to apply to non-current versions. I wanted to make sure my current issue was addressed. Additionally, I have further concerns regarding documentation (below). Returning to the main issue: I can right-click on the window manager windows, and bring up the preferences window, but the Workspace Switcher Preferences window that shows up only has two inputs: one for number of columns, and one for number of rows. I don't see a UI for naming workspaces (I have 4 workspaces, 1 row, 4 columns) like I remember. For all I know this could be a UI glitch, not a window manager difference. In any case, I don't think I've strayed from the 8.10 defaults. The Visual Effects tab under the System-Preferences-Appearance menu shows Normal. I mention it, because it's not clear to me what these mean, but seems important to various parties. If this controls whether the window manager is Metacity or Compiz, then you should know that this isn't at all obvious to a newbie. Secondary issue, possibly for a separate bug: I looked at the help for the Workspaces that is found by right-clicking the Help icon on the panel application for the workspace manager. It didn't give any insight into naming these desktop workspaces under compiz. If the info is there, I couldn't find it. I felt surprised that the old behavior (naming workspaces) wasn't documented at a minimum, and that there wasn't an obvious workaround, now that the behavior seems to have changed. Am filing this bug under libwnck, since bug 129152 was confirmed under that package, and I can't offer a better guess. ** Affects: libwnck (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Can't assign workspace names in baseline Ubuntu 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355822 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi, I seem to have the same problem as mentioned above: can't install linux-image-2.6.27-7 from Wubi. While I've seen the comments above, I'm unclear about the details of the workaround/solution. 1) If I'm converting a partition to NTFS, would I be doing this under Windows, or the Wubi image? 1a) If it's Windows fs that needs to be converted, is there a Wubi bug addressing this limitation? 1b) If it's a Ubuntu fs that needs to be converted, is there a Ubuntu bug addressing this? 2) I can't tell whether I can expect to see the problem again after I've applied the recommended fix.
