[Bug 1282345] [NEW] vim crashes on ruby files with very long lines

2014-02-19 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

1. edit a file to be called test in vim: vi test.
2. Insert the following line:
vln =
"Nowisthetimeforareallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyrea

llyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyy"
3. Play with the file to reassure you have no problem editing it.
4. Exit vi and mv test test.rb.
5. vi test.rb. Note that now the file freezes up. You can exit the terminal,
and try going back and forth. It is 100%. When the file is called test.rb, it
freezes up, apparently from formatting for ruby. When it is called just test,
it is fine.

[Bug 629929] [NEW] MM (10.10) does not connect to the internet

2010-09-03 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

I got my install disk for 32 bit 10.10 today, but on boot neither the
live load nor the install connects to the internet. I'm sorry I have no
other information. If I can get more time to play with it I will, but
at least I can say this: No matter how many times I try, it never
connects to the internet over a twisted pair line that no other
installation is failing from, including the windows install on the same
machine. This install attempt is happening on a Thinkpad, fairly new,
but not brand new according to our tech. It says lenovo T410. I hope
that helps.

[Bug 614195] [NEW] Apache2 UserDir defaults to User www-data

2010-08-05 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

When using UserDir directive on Apache2 on CentOS, you get access to the
directories as THAT USER, but on Ubuntu Server it is stupidly set up as
www-data. This is completely contrary to what most people will ever
want if they actually set up UserDir, which is designed for user
specific accounts and access to public_html, not for central access.
Please fix this. It is the wrong wrong wrong configuration default.

[Bug 381791] Re: LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-06-13 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I got some comments that this might have to do with Debian/Ubuntu

together an openssl build right now, but that is being difficult too.
Apparently openssl might be less difficult with certain certificates.

[Bug 381791] Re: LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-06-12 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I may misunderstand what is going on with this, but it appears there is
no definition of bind specific to my SSL usage inside the sslconn.c
source file given the preprocessor define symbol / state I am
experiencing of USE_OPENLDAP_SSLCONN, the implication seeming to be that
this version of the source file just leaves it, and presumably the
internals it needs, out. Perhaps is it intentionally left broken? More
likely just doesn't have some recent version of something I will see if
I can find it in the version from CentOS or something. I know it works
in CentOS. Still open to suggestions here.

[Bug 381791] Re: LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-06-03 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I just put some trace statements in all the functions with the word
'bind' in them in sslconn.c, and compiling and running that, along with
some in the initializer, I show said initializer is called, but none of
the 'bind' functions in that file are called. So my guess is the bind
method I am using is in the conn.c file only. I don't see a special
bind call in the documentation, so I appear to be using the correct ruby
to do this. If there is a special sslbind, it is not in the present
http://ruby-ldap.sourceforge.net/rdoc. So, I think the critical thing
is the ldap software is trying to use the non sslconn bind for the
sslconn state.

LDAP_OPT_X_TLS_PROTOCOL does not exist in the tree except in conn.c and
ldap.c. LOAD_OPT_X_TLS_PROTOCOL in the directory tree. It occurs in
/usr/include/ldap.h as a macro taking two arguments, but not as a simple
preprocessor symbol, which is the usage in ldap.c and conn.c.

[Bug 381791] Re: LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-06-01 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Okay, this is probably important to add:

On the Ubuntu server machines I'm using, when I do a plain openssl call
like so:

openssl s_client -connect ipaddr:port

where ipaddr and port are definitely correct and shown to work in all
other ways with the ldap server we are trying to configure, we get data
back with the following ending:

SSL-Session:
Protocol : TLSv1
Cipher: RC4-MD5
Session-ID: 46AEE896A3CB7B0C0044D1169EA9672E769D7BF64194F96D8378D08D750D60AA

Key-Arg : None
Start Time: 1243885042
Timeout : 300 (sec)
Verify return code: 19 (self signed certificate in certificate chain)
---snip---
so a 19, and supposedly we don't have a nice cert. But the cert is there, and
when I specify it thus:

openssl s_client -connect ipaddr:port -CAfile $certpath

I get output indicating normal access to our cert:

SSL-Session:
Protocol : TLSv1
Cipher: RC4-MD5
Session-ID: 46AECE8C1C97B9CE8D0547CD2FFF0DB787B11E90A2E4387A430CBEB3996BA67C

Key-Arg : None
Start Time: 1243888048
Timeout : 300 (sec)
Verify return code: 0 (ok)
snip
so a zero; unixy success. So, it seems to me there is a seriously likely guess
to be made here since the responses I got back are similar in wording from
openssl and the LDAPpy API to ruby. I hope this helps. xc

[Bug 381791] Re: LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-06-01 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Can somebody tell me here if this is perhaps intentionally made not to
work? I have seen other posts that seem to indicate LDAP::SSLConn has
never worked, and perhaps is intended not to work because of the
implications for password guessing attacks. Excuse me if I impose my
pressure and political beliefs (pointing out that the key is under the
front mat) by saying that someone with a little energy could in fact get
in and hack this together anyway. Perhaps the real problemthough is
with the techno ninnies who in fact don't have enough intellect to do so
but have enough to cause stupid amounts of trouble. At any rate, This
kind of thing could be very useful, can be done I have determined from a
RedHat and CentOS box, and I would think would be something you'd want
to be able to do from any server given directions in automation.
Perhaps this is just whining, but I think I should be able to do this
easily and shops should make security around that fact, and not vice
versa.

[Bug 382552] [NEW] openssl man page does not include -CAfile switch

2009-06-01 Thread Xeno Campanoli

The man page I get on Ubuntu Server 9.04 for the openssl package does

Please put that stuff in. It probably just needs to be taken from some

[Bug 381791] Re: LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-06-01 Thread Xeno Campanoli
No. I had not. I just did, however, install it on my test system, and
it still gets the same diagnostic:

trace 5 oops, Can't contact LDAP server

I was really hoping when I saw your post that you had found the problem.
I wonder if there is some other combination I might have left out. It
would be great if this was just a matter of my leaving out a package, or
a package omitting a dependency, but people that helped me test this
seemed to indicate the certificate was just not being seen. If we could
know a place to put the certs where it would be seen that would fix it
apparently, as the shell command openssl does the activities properly,
and this only fails in the ruby package. However it would also be nice
if 1) one could specify a location from the API, 2) one could see clear
documentation of the proper location for the cert, 3) one could turn off
the cert requirement from the API, and 4) a cert in the same directory
as the script programmed was automatically seen for the purposes of
testing and simple use. I highly recommen all these 4 items. If I can
help I shall. Please someone recommend a next step for me to test or
try.

[Bug 381791] [NEW] LDAP::SSLConn from ruby fails, probably from not seeing cert

2009-05-29 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

I am unable to execute a simple script to authenticate users using
LDAP::SSLConn in Ruby. The following two scripts and output explain the
situation:

I have the following working with cleartext LDAP:

#!/usr/bin/ruby
#

require 'ldap'

begin
ldap_host = 'myldaphost'
ldap_port = 389
ldap_conn = LDAP::Conn.new(ldap_host,ldap_port)
puts "trace 2 ldap_conn: #{ldap_conn.class}"
#   ldap_conn.set_option( LDAP::LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3 )
puts "trace 3 ldap_conn: #{ldap_conn.class}"
bind_dn = "uid=#{ARGV[0]},ou=People,ou=Corporate,dc=x,dc=com"
password_dn = "#{ARGV[1]}"
ldap_conn.bind(bind_dn,password_dn)
puts "trace 4 ldap_conn: #{ldap_conn.class}"
rescue
puts "trace 5 oops"
end

# end of test
snip---

But when I try to run it with SSL, I get a failure saying "Can't connect LDAP
Server". My admin says it is not seeing the certificate. I need to either
accept the certificate or turn certification off, but for the life of me I am
looking at the rdoc and I cannot find methods for either. Perhaps I just don't
understand the vocabulary or something, but I would expect this to be simple.
My SSL version is as follows, and gets the diagnosic I gave above:
#!/usr/bin/ruby
#

require 'ldap'

begin
ldap_host = 'myldaphost'
ldap_port = 636
ldap_conn = LDAP::SSLConn.new(ldap_host,ldap_port)
puts "trace 2 ldap_conn: #{ldap_conn.class}"
ldap_conn.set_option( LDAP::LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3 )
puts "trace 3 ldap_conn: #{ldap_conn.class}"
bind_dn = "uid=#{ARGV[0]},ou=People,ou=Corporate,dc=x,dc=com"
password_dn = "#{ARGV[1]}"
ldap_conn.bind(bind_dn,password_dn)
puts "trace 4 ldap_conn: #{ldap_conn.class}"
rescue
puts "trace 5 oops, #{$!}"
end

# end of test
snip---
Here is the output:
u...@h:$ ./t7.rb un 'pw'
trace 2 ldap_conn:  LDAP::SSLConn
trace 3 ldap_conn:  LDAP::SSLConn
trace 5 oops, Can't contact LDAP server
u...@h:$

On the first one, with the proper u/p I get the trace 4. Anyway, please
can someone suggest what I may be leaving out, or what is the method for
specifying certs or no certs, both would be nice.

I am seeing this behavior on Ubuntu Server installs with the following versions:
Linux hostname.domainstuff 2.6.24-19-server #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 23:54:28 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux
Linux leopard 2.6.28-11-server #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 02:48:10 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

It appears that the versions of these routines installed on Red Hat and
CentOS have a default directory (I believe I was told it was
/etc/openldap/cacerts) where you can put certificates that then allow
SSL activity with Ruby LDAP, but aparently either we are unable to find
that point in Ubuntu Server, or there is no default. Furthermore there
is not apparent way to specify it from the application, nor to turn the
requirement for the cert off from the API. We also tried running this
with the certs in the default directory, and my CentOS pal made it work
that way, but on Ubuntu Server it did not work.

[Bug 314444] Re: Cannot run Rhapsody Online Player 24 Hours on Firefox

2009-05-18 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I have tried the latest flash player that comes default on my 32bit
system, because I keep that up to date. Unless a new one has come out
in the last 72 hours I think we're on that, but I have to go home
tonight to be sure. Meanwhile it is probably important to elaborate:

1. Typically I go no more than a few hours before I get a state that requires
some browser jiggling to get going again.
2. I have discovered that if I start FF from the little top of desktop command
bar without killing my old browser, then kill the old one after the new window
is securely up, I can shed whatever the problem is without losing my cookie.
This may be important in isolating the problem I think, and for those trying to
get around it, it is handy because you don't have to re-login to rhapsody,
having saved the cookie.
3. I still have really lousy and rather randomy luck making rhapsody online go
with my 64bit system, but perhaps that should be another bug.

[Bug 278793] Re: Firefox shows Flash Plugin r100 rather than 124

I just tried some uninstalls and reinstalls of the plugins, and it did

Flash player for 24 hours, and around 300 songs without crashing Firefox
On XP. I WISH I COULD DO THAT ON UBUNTU. Typically flash player on my
desktop ubuntu at home crashes after 4 hours or so, sometimes sooner,
and sometimes more like 8 hhours, but I have never seen it run 24 hours,
no way. The bug appears to be the flash player, as they way it
manifests it self is similar to breakdowns I've seen with video plays

2008-12-15 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

Default subversion on Ubuntu is 1.4.6 right now. Since 1.5 is the
oldest one shown in the documentation site, and since it has some very
important new features (like --parents for svn mkdir --parents url,
whose absense requries me to write a bash function here and there) it
really behooves us to upgrade, and I would consider it a bug to have
such an older version that does not even correspond to what is in the
oldest thing in the main docs for the project.

[Bug 300405] [NEW] Sound stream gets jumbled on firefox

2008-11-20 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

Repro:

1. With recent version of adobe-flashplugin on firefox, play videos or music,
and either play for a long time, or even just leave FF up for a long time.
2. Eventually, you will find a video or music play will get to a point where
it sounds like the sound packets are delivered out of order or otherwise are
jumbled or mis-handled. I find this is consistent. It always happens
eventually. It may take hours waiting, but I always get to this state
eventually, and usually in less than a few hours.
3. Killing all the FF jobs and restarting fixes the problem.

Note: This reduces the value of a lot of long-term playing activities
on Ubuntu, so it would be very nice bug to be quickly rid of. Being
able to use video and sound on Ubuntu is a very big selling point for
new users.

[Bug 87043] Re: Firefox hoverover flickers sometimes

2008-09-22 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I was finally able to generate some flashing on the Guba site main menu
last night by leaving the mouse on one of the image links on the right
side. This is not exactly the same flashing bug I was originally
seeing, but it is still interesting that there are still
flashing/flickering problems with FF.

2008-09-21 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I don't see it anymore either. If you want to close it I suspect it's
gone. If I see it again I'll certainly reopen it. Unfortunately, it
has been so long that I may not be remembering about something with the
reproduction context. I do remember it was browser windows and not
browser tabs that did it, and that I was running at least one video when
it was flashing. My apologies for the hiatus. I was trying to keep a
good job (and I so far have succeeded).

[Bug 49613] Re: Flash content always on top of web pages

2008-06-07 Thread Xeno Campanoli
With respect, there is an incentive for Adobe to do nothing until a
competing activity threatens its revenues critically, and the only
reasonable countervaling power in such a matter is a free software
corollary, like a GNU flash plugin, that works better and threatens to
take the lead in standardizations. Interestingly, it is also a power
point because anyone who does so, in any capacity will be highly
interesting to any employer, and the entire engineering community, for
the rest of her/his life for such a coup / accomplishment.

Yes, that's easy to say. It's also obvious if you think about it a
minute. Most engineers will not because they are already busy with
other stuff right now, price of oil being such an important economic
substitute for engineering (which is to say, price rise in one will push
rise in other).

And if you're trying to short circuit or obscure workings to make them
more secure, please see Schneier on topics like "Obscurity is not
Security" (_Secrets_And_Lies_, for instance). If you make the script
run cleanly, it is more secure. If you make it so somebody can modify
it, it is more of a real user product.

[Bug 235809] [NEW] apache2 startup script fails to stop apache2 at times.

2008-05-29 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

I am having a hard top with /etc/init.d/apache2 stops and restarts (due
to the stop phase) from my Hardy Server. Typically after some usage
involving mod_ruby (not clear that it's from ruby, or just from
traffic), a restart is unable to stop any of the apache processes and I
have to kill them by hand to proceed. Either apache needs to be fixed,
or an alternative harder kill done as a matter of course in the script
when this happens. Otherwise you spend all day killing apache to get
things done. I have no experience with this outside of my Hardy Server.

[Bug 232391] [NEW] DSA keys are not immediately rejected by ssh in workstation

2008-05-20 Thread Xeno Campanoli
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

I noticed today that my Ubuntu-Server was rejecting my old dsa public
key by prompting me for a password anyway. This is good. However, when
I went into my CentOS server, it blithely accepted the public key and I
could get on without a password. It's my impression that that old
public key could have been compromised, and needed to be rejected, but
it needed to be rejected by the ssh on my workstation too, as otherwise
I would have been able to still use it on machines other than Ubuntu-
Servers. RedHat flavors it sounds like may never get around to
rejecting keys in this range, so they would all be compromised. It
would be very good if Ubuntu/Debian could force their workstation users
to make new keys also, unless for some reason this is deemed
unnecessary, in which case it is curious that Ubuntu-Server is rejecting
them.

[Bug 140465] Re: pidgin does not remember buddy sorting, sounds, well anything except accounts

2008-05-13 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I am in fact still getting this bug, or something like it. My boss
keeps getting after me because the buddy pounce won't save, and I have
to remember to re-save it every day. I started out using gaim, but it
has somehow transitioned to Pidgin. My configuration directory appears
to be .purple, and .purple/pounces.xml does have user rw permissions,
which is minimally what everything else has in that directory. Please
let me know i fI should start a different bug.

No, I no longer have this problem, but I don't really have the

[Bug 200848] [NEW] Ubuntu Studio Thunderbird Email Address Titles Bad Blue Hue

2008-03-10 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu Studio last night, and I'm mostly impressed with it.
When I then installed Thunderbird, and began to use it, I immediately
found the blue email addresses on the gray background to be almost
impossible to read. You need to pick a different color. The rest of
the color scheme is fine, but that is bad, impossible, enough to make
someone so frustrated they might actually go try another mail program.
Please! I like Thunderbird. It deserves better. And it looks fine on

[Bug 177243] Re: UbuntuME: Bash command completion puts backslash in front of beginning dollar sign

2008-03-07 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Not at all. If the bug is more general, then let it be known. I just
tried it again, and I don't get it on my Gutsy install. Perhaps there
is something about my configuration on Gutsy that differs from what I
have on Kubuntu and UbuntuME on the same machine, but I only get the
symptom on the latter two. Presumably this DIFFERENCE symptom will also
be of interest. Thank you for the feedback. I tried your example
exactly, and mine works. I also tried with both set -o vi and set -o
emacs, and I get the same thing: WORKS ON GUTSY. If anyone can pin
down what I'm doing differently, it sounds like that will be an
important key. I've also noticed all my CentOS systems DO NOT have the
problem (an anomaly since most of the times I have worse luck with
CentOS than with Ubuntu). Here is my env:

[Bug 180871] libdbi does not install functionally from libdbi-ruby

2008-01-06 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

I installed libdbi-ruby with apt-get, and the basic connect function
fails:

% ruby simple.rb
/usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/dbi.rb:344:in 'load_driver': Could not
 load
driver (no such file to load -- mysql) (DBI::InterfaceError)
 from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/dbi.rb:227:in
 '_get_full_driver'
 from /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/dbi.rb:213:in 'connect'
 from simple.rb:9

where simple.rb is as follows:

#!/usr/bin/ruby -w
   # simple.rb - simple MySQL script using Ruby DBI module

   require "dbi"

begin
 # connect to the MySQL server
 dbh = DBI.connect("DBI:Mysql:test:localhost", "testuser", "testpass")
 # get server version string and display it
 row = dbh.select_one("SELECT VERSION()")
 puts "Server version: " + row[0]
rescue DBI::DatabaseError => e
 puts "An error occurred"
 puts "Error code: #{e.err}"
 puts "Error message: #{e.errstr}"
ensure
 # disconnect from server
 dbh.disconnect if dbh
end
---snip---
I was able to fix this problem by installing both:

libmysql-ruby and libdbd-mysql-ruby

I am not sure the first was necessary, as it didn't begin working until
I did the second.

I believe it is more normal in the Debian world for installation of the
libdbi-ruby package alone to result in a fully functional installation.
If this is an exception for some reason, it seems to me explanations for
that should somehow be made clearer to the beginning user, like in
prompting from the package installation, or perhaps an "ATTENTIONFOOL"
file or something, however it seems to me that the best solution would
be a default installation that works, and then further instructions on
how to do other things with it, so I'd recommend installations of
libdbi-ruby to automatically call in the needed stuff from the other two
packages.

Sincerely, Xeno

Sorry I didn't get back to you further. Above is the echo you wanted.
Also, I have rebooted several times today to see if I could evoke the
bug again, but it always comes back with the normal status manager icon.
Unless you have other info, I guess my little bug is dormant or gone
now. I have not upgraded since it started. I don't know what else to
tell you for now, except have a good weekend.

The system monitor was working well until the stated upgrade. I never
saw any problem with it until now. As of today, the system monitor is
back working correctly, so I don't know what to say about it.

[Bug 180178] Re: system monitor not displaying on topbar

2008-01-03 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Okay thanks. As I said, it's Gutsy. I only used the red star on the
top menu bar to upgrade. I did nothing else. I presume that's all
available upgrades known by the standard ubuntu mechanisms used by most
users. I did NOT do an "apt-get update;apt-get -f upgrade" or any such
thing. I was completely upgraded to the latest until the red star
appeared this week.

I am not up to speed on the file locations for the System->Admin
(presuming you don't mean to have me work the dropdown menu). Please
specify the path I should look in. I am not finding anything with the
string "System->Admin" using grep -lRi.

I am noticing the following, which appears odd:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat .gnome-system-monitor.xeno
cat: .gnome-system-monitor.xeno: No such device or address
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$
--snip--

Please give me specific file specifications to edit files, or please
specify you want me to tell you dropdown menu entries. The entries do
look normal and the names in the regular window seem all normally
populated.

[Bug 180178] system monitor not displaying on topbar

2008-01-03 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

I have the gnome system monitor icon on my top menu bar, and it has been
working up until the latest update. Now it only shows a thin horizontal
rectangle with a darker line through the middle of it, also
horizontally. I have not noticed it failing like this before, and it
was working yesterday, so it appears to have only become this way after:

1. Doing my latest upgrade yesterday, January 2, 2008.
2. Rebooting and bringing it up now. I have not tried this a second time.
3. You can still get the full sized monitor by mouseclicking the icon.

Help shows the version is 2.20.1.

[Bug 177240] Re: 64bit Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu no longer finish booting on my Toshiba A215

2007-12-31 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Okay, the Kubuntu, Edubuntu installations are now working, and I may
have just been impatient with them, as I did nothing to fix them. I've
been using the Kubuntu install since a few days after this occurred, and
it has not flipped out at all. So, my behavior seems to be that right
after playing hazardly with my flash, I had something in an unstable
state that messed up my Ubuntu install, and then a day later messed up
my UbuntuME install. However, it it's hardware, it's odd because it is
not doing it on Kubuntu, and Kubuntu is running well for what it is. If
this looks inappropriate to go on because it is something obviously to
do with Toshiba Hardware or something, please let me know and I'll stop.

[Bug 177243] UbuntuME: Bash command completion puts backslash in front of beginning dollar sign

2007-12-18 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

UbuntunME ONLY

Command completion inserts a backslash in front of the beginning collar
sign of my environment variable. Example:

export MYENVVARB=xxx

cd $MYE

results in

cd \$MYENVVARB

which is not only seriously inconvenient, but I've never seen any
standard Bash configuration that does it. I recommend it be configured
or programmed otherwise. Perhaps there is a special mode for this, but
it should not be turned on in the terminal. Those terminals are places
where environment variables will be used a lot, and people will want
command completion for them. This is completely non-standard. I'm
seeing it in both the standard terminals, and in the xterms I use.

[Bug 177240] 64bit Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu no longer finish booting on my Toshiba A215

2007-12-18 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Public bug reported:

I have UbuntuME 32bit, Ubuntu 64bit, Kubuntu 64bit, Edubuntu 64bit all
installed, among others which I've not recently used, on my Toshiba
Laptop A215. Last night on the bus I was for the first time unable to
get the regular boot for my primary partition, Ubuntu, to finish booting
in the regular mode. It boots on rescue. Edubuntu booted, however, so
I used it. Now today Edubuntu and Kubuntu both don't boot. However, my
UbuntuME does. The others are 64bit kernels, but the UbuntuME is 32bit.
Other things I've done that may be related include messing with my flash
memory stick and making a partition on it, which was a bit of a klunky
process and deserves a bug of it's own, but not today.

I'm using UbuntuME today, as it is working for now. Another matter that
may be related...almost all of the over 2200 lines in /var/log/dmesg
are:

[dd.dd] hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff

Also, I've noticed that all the 64bit installations take much longer to
boot, probably at least 2, and perhaps 4 times as long, as the 32bit
installs of Ubuntu and UbuntuMe I have tried.

It would be nice to fix this without reinstalling, but perhaps more
urgent is the bug itself, as it seems to be a 64bit related one.

I will not destroy the existing logs for now. Please apprise me of
anything I should look for to help in this.

I have no idea whether this is a security vulnerability. It's
conceiveable it's from a virus, but I don't think it's reasonable to
presume that yet. xc

[Bug 159346] Re: Cannot Install Ubuntu and Edubuntu together

2007-11-06 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Sure enough, if I just do single partition installs and only share the
swap area I can install Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, and
presumably others too. When I share /tmp Edubuntu and Ubuntu together
in particular fails. I presume this is a bug. It may be convenient to
keep stuff on /tmp for future installs, but I would guess it would be
better to put such things elsewhere. /tmp I think is really meant to be
cleared off at reboot. Anybody out there know if the world has changed
this philosophy? I would say move stuff elsewhere like
/var/keepmystufffornexttimetmp and configure /tmp for always being
cleared off. Perhaps the world has changed though.

I have been trying to install a copy of Ubuntu with /boot on /dev/sda1
and / on /dev/sda5, and then a copy of Edubuntu on /dev/sda10. On
Ubuntu I use /dev/sda6 as my /home. I find that after I do the second
install, the first install has the following problems: Picking it from
the grub menu at startup, I get into a frozen state. Then, if I
and hit , it does come up with the login screen,
but it will not allow me to log in, saying it does not see my home
directory. It will not allow me to log in as root either. There is a

I can get wireless, but all the nice menuing and the signal icon have
disappeared and I have no idea how to find them again. Presumably
someone left out the ability to go back to the more "automatic" of the
modes. Please fix it, I would like it back. It was nice.

[Bug 133439] Re: multiple ubuntu boots 7.10 installation

2007-10-23 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I found that when I installed Ubuntu Gutsy i386 on my Toshiba A215 when
Ubuntu Gutsy AMD64 was already installed, the AMD 64 version was no
longer on the GRUB list. I installed the i386 as it appeared some
things from i386 were not available for the AMD64, and I wanted to
compare the two. Unless you have exact duplicate service, it makes
sense to allow both installs at once.

2007-10-23 Thread Xeno Campanoli
Actually, I hope to install all of the following on my laptop, and it
would be nice if they all just went on and the grub configurations just
worked:

Ubuntu AMD64
Ubuntu i386
Kubuntu AMD64
Xubuntu AMD64
Edubuntu AMD64
Ubuntu Studio AMD64
Ubuntu ME
Mint
DamnSmall

2007-10-23 Thread Xeno Campanoli
I've got the new Toshiba Satellite A215 (new last week from Office
Depot) and it doesn't have sound in Ubuntu i386, AMD 64 nor in Kubuntu,
all of which I have installed. The machine sports a RealTek for
wireless.

My confirmation is that the latest kernel I'm using from Ubuntu yields
no sound.

[Bug 104033] Re: [feisty] flash video freezes firefox

2007-10-23 Thread Xeno Campanoli
My apologies for the delay. I no longer see this on my Toshiba Laptop,
and, if it helps, I haven't had the problem for at least a few weeks,
perhaps since a week or so before the Gutsy release.
