if a program should read a configuration it it at least helpful if the

the standard locations could and should be used - for downstream that
would be /etc/xdg/lxqt/$foo and /etc/$foo - there is no need to be
creative with the xdg search pathes

[Bug 1719122] [NEW] Flash plugin ignores pulse audio

2017-09-23 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS. Firefox 55.0.2, all other software recently
updated through Software Updater.

Internal soundcard set to 'off' in pulse audio, using Focusrite Scarlett
2i4 USB. Playing audio from a website with flash player.

Expected: Audio output through pulse audio and Focusrite, just like any
other sound from firefox or other sources do.

What happens: Firefox / flash ignores pulse audio and outputs sound
directly to internal soundcard. The audio stream does not show in
pavucontrol. Volume control is possible only from the flash player.

[Bug 1700896] Re: lxqt-config monitor cuts off info on my particular monitor.

2017-06-28 Thread Alf Gaida
two possible solutions
a) buy new hardware with a shorter vendor name
b) forward it to https://github.com/lxde/lxqt/issues - i would prefer b.

The monitor config window should be bigger at all - in hight and width -
witdh only could be sufficient. The tabbed object will look better too.

[Bug 1574120] Re: Notebook doesn't suspend when lid is closed after update to 16.04

2017-06-10 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
Ubuntu Studio 16.04 on Toshiba Satellite p850

Regardless of settings in power manager or logind.conf, machine will not
suspend on lid close. It will turn off the screen, though.

Suspend from menu, command or power button works.

Lid state is reported correct (cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state)

However, as described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpid/+bug/1037860 lid close
will suspend if I remove the power cable. As checked with acpi_listen,
lid close alone does not generate any ACPI event.

[Bug 1037860] Re: Closing the lid does not generate an ACPI signal

2017-06-10 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
I am on a Toshiba Satellite p850 running Ubuntu Studio 16.04

Just closing the lid will not suspend (regardless of settings), while
closing the lid and removing the power cable will successfully suspend
the machine.

ACPI readings similar to those described in OP.

[Bug 1690491] Re: Merge 0.11.1-2 from Debian Sid

2017-05-15 Thread Alf Gaida
Sorry, forget to mention that a small or no diff to debian would ease
the upgrade to 0.12 a lot - there are some breaks/replaces needed. Most
of the file moves will not be critical because of it's nature - esp. the
conf-file moves are handled fine with apt.

[Bug 1690491] Re: Merge 0.11.1-2 from Debian Sid

2017-05-15 Thread Alf Gaida
There is nothing wrong with the lxqt-common dependency. In fact no
autostart and some other things will run without and the common answer
to misc problems with LXQt and Ubuntu is: Just install lxqt-common.
Period.

The only thing that is wrong with lxqt-common: it exists. Maybe it was
not the best of all upstream ideas to create the commons, but lxqt-
common was and is needed to some extend until 0.12.

[Bug 1671945] [NEW] Suspend on lid close broken

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upower/+bug/863834
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upower/+bug/854404

Toshiba Satellite P850, Ubuntu Studio 16.04

In 'Power Manager', 'when laptop lid is closed' is set to 'suspend'
In /etc/systemd/logind.conf, 'HandleLidSwitch=suspend' and
'HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend'
In /etc/UPower/UPower.conf, 'IgnoreLid=false'

Even so, the laptop does not suspend when lid is closed ('lock screen'
does not work, either). Selecting suspend from the logout button works
fine. Opening lid while suspended wakes up the machine.

With the upcoming release the translations (reason for the data package)

repository. So most reasons for a data package are gone. So its up to
you - i would suggest to follow debian, its tested, less work and less
error prone.

[Bug 1316634] Re: Does not automatically reconnect to hidden WiFi network

2016-06-05 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
Running Ubuntu Studio (Xubuntu) 14.04 I had this or a very similar
problem when I changed name and hid the SSID on my wifi.

nm-manager kept looking for the old SSID and would not connect to the
hidden network - I had to connect manually on boot.

When I told nm-manager to forget the old wifi the problem disappeared.
My computer now connects to the hidden SSID and networking is OK.

[Bug 1528730] Re: Panel menus appear on top of screen despite the panel being on the bottom

confirmed, its an upstream bug. something has changed in the settings
and the new panel handle the 'old' settings not gracefully. it would be
nice if you forward this to https://github.com/lxde/lxqt/issues - maybe
with the faulty panel settings attached.

workaround: pkill lxqt-panel; rm ${HOME}/.config/lxqt/panel.conf;lxqt-

[Bug 882147] Re: overlayfs does not implement inotify interfaces correctly

2015-01-23 Thread Alf Gaida
@Mike Mestnik: To be true, i have a record that shows that i'm not the
nicest and most patient living person in the world - but you should look
at the bigger picture. I've used aufs for ISOs long term - with the
latest development in debian aufs does more harm than good - so the
logical switch is to overlayfs. And the overlay should give feedback
about changed files the same way as the most other filesystems do - i
think thats called the principle of least surprise.

@Li Jianguo (byjgli): thanks for the patch, does what it should so far,
i should have a closer look at it, apply to a 3.18 Kernel without
problems, quilt refresh does its work. So far it works good with both
tail and Qt 5.3.2 too - big thanks, that save me days.

[Bug 1069265] Re: Compiz hangs at first click anywhere on desktop - can work around by deleting .compiz/session/* first.

2015-01-04 Thread Alf Sagen
I don't really think this should be set invalid, as it is indeed a real bug in
the version for which it is reported.
However, the problem was seemingly fixed long time ago (under 12.10 or 13.04)
and is therefore not affecting many users anymore.

Also, I do realise that there might not be any other status with a good
fit.

[Bug 1222021] Re: xfce4-power-manager does not inhibit systemd from handling buttons and lid events

2013-12-22 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
Ubuntu Studio 13.10 on Toshiba Sattellite p850.

The workaround doesn't work for me. Even editing
/etc/systemd/logind.conf to have

#HandlePowerKey=ignore
#HandleSuspendKey=ignore
#HandleHibernateKey=ignore
#HandleLidSwitch=ignore

has no effect. Hitting power buttons means immediate shutdown. By the
way my machine haven't got suspend or hibernate buttons, it's only the
power button.

Tried to compare with same file in my working Ubuntu Studio 12.10 on the
same machine, but I can't find a logind.conf at the expected location.

Is it safe to rename this file (in 13.10) and try to run without it?

[Bug 1256506] Re: Configuration directory owned by root

2013-11-30 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
Ouch.

That sounds like a plausible explanation. Browsing through my CLI
history I'm finding one instance of 'sudo geany', and it _is_ possible
that was for the first run.

Thanks for taking time to check, and sorry for a most likely unnecessary
bug report.

[Bug 859539] Re: usb-creator-gtk fails to install bootloader: System policy prevents installing the bootloader

2013-11-03 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
This bug affects me on Ubuntu Studio 12.10, 32-bit.

It seems waiting until light on USB drive stops blinking before typing
password (as suggested in this thread) might be a workaround. I managed
to successfully create an image once, and it could be that it was some
waiting before typing the password.

Run from cli usb-creator-gtk --allow-system-internal it asks for
system password, seems to run as root and crashes with the message
Segmentation fault (core dumped) while creating the persistence file.

Run from cli sudo usb-creator-gtk --allow-system-internal it crashed
without any error message while still copying files (before the creation
of a persistence file.

Run from cli sudo usb-creator-gtk it crashed without any error message
while finishing. Will try if it created a bootable stick and report
back.

Testing requires patience as each run is ~ 10-15 mins or more...

See my previous comment. Even if crashing, it seems sudo usb-creator-
gtk made a working USB boot stick.

[Bug 1193110] [NEW] Lenovo laptop reporting ata1.00: head unload failed!

2013-06-20 Thread Alf Sagen
Public bug reported:

Reference is made to Bug #772273 previously reported (from Ubunti
11.04).

I am using a Lenovo laptop with a SSD installed (specifically OCZ Vertex III,
but this is not really interesting, I believe).
dmesg is full of messages saying ata1.00: head unload failed!, which seems to
be caused by hdapsd is triggered by Lenovo's gravitational sensor, hence trying
to park the disk's head, which is obviously failing when the laptop disk(s)
is/are SSD(s), and there is no mechanical part (head to unload).

The easiest way to recreate the warning is to switch into a non-
graphical TTY (e.g. CTRL+ALT+F1) and just shake the laptop a little.
Even without logging in/starting a session in the tty console, the
warning will be shown on screen.

This is not really a big problem other than logs filling up with
warnings, and it's fixed by disabling/uninstalling hdapsd ( sudo apt-get
remove --purge hdapsd ). Hence, I'm not sure whether it should really be
reported as a bug.

However, upgrading Ubuntu to a new release actually re-installs hdapsd
automatically (re-invoking the logged warning messages), and I believe
that in an ideal world, the system would detect automatically that the
disk(s) is (are) SSD(s), hence only activating hdapsd in the case that
disk(s) is(are) really mechanical and in need of any head unload.

[Bug 772273] Re: Kernel spits ata3.00: head unload failed! messages

2013-06-17 Thread Alf Sagen
Reopening (confirming) this bug, as still present in Ubuntu 13.04;
Even though uninstalling hdapsd is indeed a working fix (or work-around), I
believe the kernel (or installer/automatic sw updater) should ultimately detect
that the HD installed is an SSD, and thereby skip the install/enablement of
hdapsd.

It might be that this shouldn't be reported as a bug in the first place,
but rather as a feature request/suggested improvement. This is really
not for me to say, so please feel free to convert accept my apologies
for reopening!

Brgds
/alfs

2013-06-17 Thread Alf Sagen
Btw, it seems as if any major upgrade to new Ubuntu release is reinstalling
hdapsd despite being uninstalled before upgrade.
Info above is from apport-collect -p linux 772273 although obviously no package
named 'linux' is found...
(Not sure if you rather preferred a new issue rather than reopening an old --
if so, then sorry again!!)

[Bug 1167826] Re: Simple scan produces wrong size documents

2013-04-16 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
OK. Please disregard issues 1 and 3 and dedicate this report to issue 2:

crop to page size does not produce expected results. Simple Scan saves
documents cropped to A4 as 211 x 297 mm where it should be 210 x 297
mm. Cropping to letter also produces slightly erroneous page size.

I'll report issue 3 as a separate bug.

I'm noticing this on ubuntu 12.10 (32-bit)

In addition to the print to file, this bug affects several programs, at
the very least SImple Scan and Inkscape.

When viewing the pdf properties with evince, it says the pdf was created
by libcairo 1.9.5

Re: [Bug 1167826] Re: Simple scan produces wrong size documents

2013-04-12 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
On 12. april 2013 11:06, Michael Nagel wrote:
 Hi Alf,

thanks for your interest and feedback.
Generally speaking, opening more tickets does not improve the situation as it
 splits up the attention.
Better help us to improve the existing tickets.

On the other hand you should always have one issue per ticket and not do
collections like this, again to keep discussion focused.

So, as a consequence, I suggest that you:
 - merge your info 1 into page size setting is broken, use it as default
crop or fix it by other means
 Simple Scan Bugs Bug #550856
 - explain what the expected behavior is for issue 2, so I can suggest a
 ticket where to discuss it
 - add your info about 3 to PDF metadata: Date of creation and modification
is incorrectly set (or not set at all) -- so this issue can be reopened

 Best Regards
 Michael

Thank you for feedback!

How do I merge? Just by adding the info from my issue 1 as a comment to
the Bug #550856?

Alf

[Bug 1167826] [NEW] Simple scan produces wrong size documents

2013-04-11 Thread Alf Haakon Lund
Public bug reported:

This is my first bug report, hope it will be helpful.

There are several similar reports, most of which are classified as
duplicates of https://bugs.launchpad.net/simple-scan/+bug/550856

I'm reporting this as new because the above mentioned report is treated
as a feature request (wishlist), maybe the description wasn't precise
enough.

Running Simple Scan 3.6.0 on Ubuntu Studio 12.10, three issues occur:

1. Setting page size in preferences doesn't affect the size of a scanned
document. Regardless of this setting scanning and saving produces a
document 216 x 297 mm

2. crop does not produce expected results. Simple Scan saves documents
cropped to A4 as 211 x 297 mm

3. Document metadata states that the document was created on Jan 1st,
1970.

Attached is a screenshot of evince reading file properties.

Thank you for any help,
Alf

Yes, it's completely unclear what the checkboxes and the Do selected
tasks button actually do. Not only that, but after unchecking a
checkbox (and thus authenticating to Remove the package), the next
time Computer Janitor is loaded those packages aren't in the list any
more, even though (according to Synaptic) they are actually still
installed.

solved this, recompiled muse, but first have to install jackd1,
after all its possible to reinstall jackd2, it should work.

[Bug 765136] Re: [natty] X often crashes since upgrade to natty

2011-08-24 Thread Affi/Alf-Ivar Holm
There appears to be various reasons for X/GDM crashing. I got some signal 3s
in the gdm logs, while others (in other bugs got crashes with signal 11). The
old bug described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/396226 was consistent with
the behaviour I saw: logged out while typing, and if I then switched to tty1
(with Crtl-Alt-F1) it showed some garbled text. Disabling splash appears to
have fixed it - did it yesterday, and no forced logouts today. For a
discussion of the actual culprit, read the bug and comments.

Regarding my setup: I have two boxed upgraded to 11.04, and one fresh
install. Only one of the updated boxes had the forced logout behaviour.
All of the boxed had full disk encryption, but the one with problems
also had an issue regarding the splash screen after entering passphrase:
I had to jump out of the the splash screen, by pressing Esc(ape) at
the latest right after entering the passphrase, otherwise the splash
screen would lock up and I would have to reboot. Today, I could boot
without any security by obscurity keypress magic (albeit text only
boot) and I have not been kicked out of this session. I have done some
other tweeks as well, but chaning between Ubuntu Classic and Unity
made no difference. I don't know what I've done to trigger #396226, but
I'm happy now, knowing that it was a software issue and not hardware as
I suspected. Others might shed some light on why this issue reappearing
on 11.04 (for some configurations).

business anymore. Since 2011-04 i use debian with the same old bug. The
bug is still present in an uptodate X. The only thing about is - the lag
is smaller, but never gone.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2011-05-18 Thread Alf
I am having this problem too and I am running Natty 32bit on a desktop (Lenovo
ThinkCentre 8810-AA5) with an Intel onboard graphics card (00:02.0 VGA
compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 02)).
The workaround that I am using is:
- switch to a console using Ctrl-Alt-F1.
- ps aux|grep gnome-screensaver to get the process ID
- kill -9 pid
- switch back to the X
