This is a year old and still hasn't been fixed. "we should be focusing our polishing efforts elsewhere, and leave the CLI optimized for people who need or prefer it." So is there a papercut for taking the terminal out of the desktop .iso by default and then forcing desktop users to install it via Synaptic if they want it? Or taking all terminal commands out of the community site documentation? New users aren't pasting in terminal commands they've memorized. [Bug 194472] Re: Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback
Can we put the "shoulder surfer" myth to bed once and for all? First of all, if your password is of any considerable length, there's no way the human eye can tell the difference between 11 asterisks and 13 asterisks in the blink of an eye. And if your password is 12 or 13 characters long, it'll take nearly forever to crack anyway if length alone is the only thing you know. Secondly, anyone standing behind you can count keyboard clicks better than counting asterisks and have the bonus of seeing at least some of the keys you're pressing or at the very least which sides of the keyboard you favor at different parts of your password. If someone is standing over your shoulder, not getting visual feedback doesn't mean staying secure. [Bug 194472] Re: Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback
Since there is such a fine line between server and desktop use, to avoid confusion there should be a consistent behavior--either the password has visual feedback or it doesn't. So if this is really a security issue (showing feedback), then there should be no feedback ever. No dots or asterisks for the GUI environment. No asterisks for the CLI. But if it isn't a security issue, then it's really just a matter of "what old *nix users are used to" as opposed to what makes the most sense, in which case dots or asterisks should be used in both the GUI and the CLI. -- Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194472 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Quite regularly (anywhere between a couple of days and every few weeks), we get a thread like this on the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1567907 Easier to count key clicks than asterisks if you're standing behind someone. Lack of visual feedback offers no security advantage--just comfort to *nix users who are used to it. -- Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194472 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 52914] Re: Lack of visual feedback on password entry
I understand if you don't want to fix this bug for the reasons you stated (you would get complaints), but I have a problem with this line: "I would get complaints citing security (i.e. you can look over somebody's shoulder and see the number of characters in their password)." Anyone standing next to you who wants to know the number of characters in your password can just listen for the number of clicks on your keyboard, no matter how fast you type. And if you have a really long password (13 characters, for example), can someone really tell the difference at a glance between 13 asterisks side-by-side and 11 asterisks side-by-side? How easy would it be to crack a password knowing that it has 13 characters in it? By the way, you can also, in addition to listening to the number of clicks on the keyboard, actually look at the keyboard itself to see what keys are being hit or which side of the keyboard is being typed on during different parts of the password. That won't give you the whole password, obviously, if the person entering it types quickly, but knowing one or two characters in addition to how many key clacks is far more useful to compromising security than just seeing a bunch of asterisks. Again, I understand why you won't fix it (people will get all upset, because this is the way it's always been), but can we please stop pretending it's about security. It'd also be great if this was changed from "invalid" to "won't fix." It's not an invalid bug. While Jefspa Leta brings up all good points, I don't see a need to keep saying could'a would'a should'a or "I told you so" to Mark at this point. I do hope Mark takes this to heart for future design changes. Most critics of the change fully understand that Mark is in charge and that this isn't a democracy. But even a dictator can be open-minded to constructive feedback and provide guidelines in advance for how that should be given. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
Yes, Mark, if you can clarify a bit about what kind of data you will actually consider as a factor in your decision, perhaps people here can actually help you by providing that data so we can avoid arguments that just go around in circles. What are you looking for? Polls? Anecdotes? If polls, what would you like the poll options to be? If anecdotes, what specific things do you want people to test for? Believe me, most of the people here who are opposed to the change would love to be able to work with you to get you what you need to make a well-informed decision. We just need guidance on what will actually help you. So far, you haven't seemed to really take into consideration the valid criticisms that have been brought up (and, no, they haven't just been "we're used to something else"). You keep mentioning "data," so it'd be great to know either what data you are currently collection and what userbase that consists of or what data you would like us to collect for you and how you would like that approached so that you do take it seriously. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
"The problem with your Forums post is that it says "this is what really happened" and is, in fact, quite incorrect. Some members of the design team asked that the window controls be grouped on the left, and presented the visualisation. So it wasn't that I "prefer it that way". I didn't like it initially, anticipating that it would generate a great deal of resistance. However, it does line things up nicely for work I would like us to do in future." No, Mark, the real problem is that is what the public perception of what happened is. And that matters as much as, if not more than, what really happened. The first indication we had of any part of the decision-making process was you saying in an IRC chat that you do prefer it that way. You didn't say you were initially opposed to it. Perhaps instead of focusing on minor factual clarifications, you can focus on the bit about how things could have gone? I fully respect that you're self-appointed benevolent dictator for life. I fully support your prerogative in making decisions without opening it up to a vote. It does behoove you, as a leader of an open source project that touts itself as a community-based distro, to have a certain kind of transparency in your process. You can even be secretive about it while also being transparent. A simple Wiki entry or Blueprint (or even just a quick email on a mailing list) that goes along these lines "Lucid alpha users will see a small change in the button order with this latest update. I know this will take a little getting used to, but rest assured we on the design team have a good reason for changing it up, and you'll be excited to see what we put on the freed-up right side. We aren't opening this up to a voting process, but if you have legitimate concerns about the move, please let us know, and we will take them into consideration." Would that have been so difficult to do? "And the major argument against it appears solely to be "we're used to it here", which is important, but not overriding. Mark" Mark, you're a busy guy, so I know you don't read all forum posts and brainstorms, but maybe you can take a second look at the comments in this very bug report. Comment #71 has quite an extensive list of arguments against the change, and they aren't just "we're used to it here": https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-themes/+bug/532633/comments/71 I'm hoping you just skimmed over and missed that and that you aren't being deliberately obtuse. [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
People wouldn't have to second-guess your decisions if you would simply explain the reasons for your decisions. A benevolent dictatorship goes so much better when you're transparent about the process and give rational explanations for decisions instead of just making arbitrary decisions that appear to have no usability benefits, letting the community scratch their heads and try to figure out what you were thinking, and then making vague references to wanting to experiment with the right side that gets freed up. For more details on how you can not be a slave to the peanut gallery while also not experiencing this kind of unprecedented backlash with regard to your decisions, see this Ubuntu Forums thread post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8978434#post8978434 -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
"I don't think anyone's purposes are served by approaching this as an 'or' question and dwelling on personal and pseudo-logical reasons for supporting one form or another. Some people like the previous Windows- style setup; others are fond of the left, OSX-like orientation." Well, as I explained before, the left orientation is not OS X-like. It's not just a simple matter of left and right, not to mention the button order is all messed up. "As we've seen from the workaround, this issue can be addressed and changed very simply with the modification of a single key. Why not simply make this an option, just a radio button in the course of the setup or even upgrade procedures? The customizability is, itself, a selling point, a point of differentiation for Ubuntu as compared to other OSes." Ubuntu is supposed to have one application per task and, more importantly, sane defaults. Yes, customizability is part of the appeal of a Linux distro, but the sane defaults should also be a selling point. So, yeah, put the controls back on the right as they were and then have a simple radio button for people who want it on the left to put it on the left. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
"Why should it be wrong to place the buttons on the left side like on Mac OS X." It isn't on the left side like Mac OS X. It's on the left side unlike Mac OS X. Here are some key differences: * On Mac OS X, the close button is still the outside button, even though the controls are on the left. * Mac OS X has always had controls on the left. They didn't suddenly move there in Snow Leopard. * Mac OS X has a universal toolbar, so the window controls aren't bunched up with the menu items. It's not just about right v. left. It's about an arbitrary change midstream that has no benefit. It's about OS X having other design decisions (not implemented in Lucid) that make a left-side control work. -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: jockey-gtk 1. [Bug 443308] Re: unauthenticated software packages cannot be installed in ubuntu software center
If only power users are expected to install packages that require unauthenticated packages as dependencies, perhaps those packages should not be listed in the Ubuntu Software Center to begin with. For example, if you try to install ubuntu-restricted-extras through software-center, then you get a warning about w32codecs not being able to be authenticated. Great. [Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open
"On most multi-user systems, there is some level of cooperation (if not trust) among the users - they'll be members of the same family, or friends, or co-workers, or whatever" I don't think you can rightly make that assumption. Even if it is true in most cases, it is better for people to opt in to sharing files than to have to opt out of it. "and it is useful for them to be able to share files reasonably conveniently (e-mail is an awful solution to this). It's easier to create a private directory for the things you don't want to be public than it is to figure out how to open up your home directory so that just a few things can be read." How about just creating a shared directory, then? 644 is pretty useless for sharing (for example, if I want to share a music collection with my whole family, they cannot right to my music collection, and I cannot write to theirs, so we would have to do a lot of duplicate checking or have only one person add songs, which would be ridiculously cumbersome). /home/username would be 600 by default /home/shared would be 660 or 666 by default What's wrong with that scenario? -- Home permissions too open https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48734 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 295638] [NEW] file-roller makes you explicitly click on Desktop to extract to desktop, even if desktop is already focused
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: file-roller This is actually I think a duplicate of another bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/80755 but that was reported for Feisty over a year ago. This occurs in Intrepid (sorry I'm late with the bug reporting, but I have only one main computer, so I can't afford to alpha and beta test with it). If I double-click a .tar.gz file, File-Roller appears. Then I click Extract, and I get the Extract dialogue. The dialogue focuses on Desktop, but if I just click OK, nothing happens.
