[Bug 1054414] Re: Tries to automount floppy drives

2013-02-12 Thread bert07
@ Adam Funk

That is caused by the new udisks used in Quantal, and has nothing to do whether
you have a floppy or not.
It is told here that it will be fixed in the next Ubuntu 13.04 release.
All Ubuntu Quantal derivatives or distro's using the same udisks have the same
problem.
We just have to be patient for some more months.
Till than: try to blacklist your floppy; perhaps that stops it.
Otherwise: downgrade to Precise until the 13.04 arrives.

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives "no device media found"

2012-11-15 Thread bert07
BTW2

It is not an UBUNTU thingy, it is a Linuw thing.
You won't get your floppy to work on Fedora are any other distro either.
Exept for Puppy. At least the former ones.

Though I must say that Udisks2 is not really what I what we (I) expected.
It keeps my floppy occupied al the time, so also there a fix is needed.

But Udisks2 seems to work. (more or less)

Do not forget that this is Linux, and they have to write everything
(almost everything) from scratch.

Linux had come this far...

And it will go on developing. Making your and mine floppy work if given
time.

Acceptaable or not, that won't help nobody.

We just should make it work.

Under Lucid we could make it work by downgrading.

And I agree that many people still use floppys (I'm one of them) but it
does not help anyone when you start making noise.

So why not downgrade udisks for the current LTS?

I meant it to install it as a multi-boot system.
Otherwise it has no sense.

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives "no device media found"

2011-09-30 Thread bert07
It is NOT a sollution (I know), but for those who REALLY need a floppy,
I suggest you use Puppy, Quirky or Wary. The floppy still works on
those.

If you should install one of them on harddisk, only 500 MB to 1GB partition is
needed.
Your floppy will be accessible and you can copy any file from any partition you
want to your floppy.
Booting into Puppy, Quirky or Wary is very fast.

You can also just use the live CD's or put them on a USB stick.
But booting from harddisk is faster and it is always there when you need it,
and also: you only need to make configurations once.

It's not so handy as getting access to your floppy from your base Linux
system, but it works, and that is what most of us need, isn't it?

Bert.

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives "no device media found"

2011-09-30 Thread bert07
To all.

Running Lucid GNOME 64-bit.

After (kernel) updates a few weeks ago, the floppy works here and still
does (checked it again before writing this).

I have udisks 1.0.1-1build1 installed + I added "floppy" (without the
quotes) to the /etc/modules file.

(* I also need the floppy working under Linux!)

Good luck and hopes for everyone.
Bert.

Stop this discussion.

[Bug 340418] Re: iwl3945 slow down after some time to 100kbps, unload/load module return speed to 1.5mbps

2010-06-02 Thread bert07
All this 'slowlyness' of certain netcards started with kernel 2.6.25 or 2.6.26.
I have the same problem since with my rt2500 (Belkin PCMCIA).
In the beginning of this problem, I could work around it for Puppy, Ubuntu and
Mandriva. But when it came to kernel 2.6.28 that work-around didn't work any
more.

As you can see (read) the problem is been around for a long time now.
And I can see that this bug is in progress. But that doesn't help those
who are 'infected' by this bug.

For what it's worth, I'll note the work-around again here. Maybe it
might ring a bell for the people working on this bug.

---+---
Add to /etc/rc.local

ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M fixed

exit 0
---+---

In Puppy, I had to use this as a batch-file, because the file
/etc/rc.local did not exist.

And as I said: since kernel 2.6.28 this doesn't work any more.

[Bug 533032] Re: Kernel panic at boot after upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04

2010-04-23 Thread bert07
Same here. Kernel panic when trying to log in Mandriva 2010 and
PCLinuxOS 2010.

Can this be (one of) the reason(s)?

A disk is in both GRUB's referred to differently.

GRUBGRUB2
/dev/sda1---(hd0,0)-(hd0,1)
/dev/sdb1---(hd1,0)-(hd1,1)

So, when GRUB2 passes on (let us say for sda1) (hd0,1), but once the
kernel of a distro still using GRUB is loading, it expects (hd0,0)

Does this make sense?

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2010-04-08 Thread bert07
Okay. I agree that Vista was a huge mistake of Microsoft. Win 7 is (good
fo us) better.

I use several flavours of Linux and I do like it very much. Personally I
prefer Gnome.

Though in the early years there were many problems according hardware,
these issues are mostly (not all) solved.
The Linux community is working very hard.

And especially that makes Linux very interesting for me.
Everyone can get involved in Linux; you do not have to be a developer,
one can just help by testing, get involved that way.

And there are so many flavours that surely there must be one Linux for
everyone somewhere.

Microsoft has only the few versions it sells.
Mind you, some people are working on a deriviate of Windows (ReactOs
http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html) and I'm watching it's progression.

Because every OS has his own ad- and disadvantages, one has to give
every OS the benefit of the doubt.

But, and this is my conclusion, Linux really gets better every day.

To be a little bit cruel, one can say that with the community, there
wouldn't be a Linux either.

And of course Windows has its advantages. Almost all programs are
written with Windows in mind.
I never said Windows was bad.
I do state that Linux has its own advantages.
The community is one of them.

But it IS true that any Linux (or BSD) community is more alive than

Aaargh more friends? Lol

I am testing Windows7 as well, and it is not that bad (and better than Vista
anyway).
But Microsoft does not have any kind of community Linux has.
Pray tell me, any Windows website that involves Windows users as much as we
connect through Linux (or BSD)..
I think you'll have to search for a long time.

That's also so beautiful about Linux, we stick together.

The vendors finally start to notice the Linux community.
Both vendors and community are working hard on getting hardware recognized
under Linux.
Before long evry one can install any Linux system without any problems on any
system. (Mind you, it might still take up to 5, 6, 1o years.
But when this happens, why would anybody still pay 500$ for a system he can
have for free.
Not only that: when one chooses for Linux, one gets a lot of new friends.
Let Microsoft beat that!

it first.
So: it HAS a function. And an important one.

[Bug 350223] [NEW] Cannot unmount

2009-03-28 Thread bert07
Public bug reported:

Using Jaunty beta for i386 desktop.

When a cd-dvd is mounted, you can not unmount the drive (disk) by right
clicking on the device, because the option is not in the menu.
You can only eject, not unmount, which is quit a different action.

[Bug 326158] Re: Root terminal doesn't start

2009-03-27 Thread bert07
Question:
Are there somewhere in the user account some hidden configuration files?

I ask this because I also had some troubles with "tilda", and after I
removed the ".tilda" folder, logged out, logged in again, made new
configurations, the trouble seemed to have disappeared.

Perhaps it might also work here?

2009-03-06 Thread bert07
I did forget to mention that I was talking about Jaunty.
And indeed, I always logout, restart, shut down, from there, as I assume most
people do.

In case you wouldn't yet have seen it in Jaunty, the menu

System > Shut down
System > Log out
System > Restart

has disappeared.
Most probably just because almost every one uses the "Switch users or shut
down" thingy to "logout, restart, shut down".

Of course, I might be wrong.

[Bug 153706] Re: Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked

I see that something has been done according to this bug, because since
yesterday I get a very annoying screen whenever I want to restart or
shut down my system.

I'm NOT happy with this. Not happy at all. See also bug #195989.

If I should need a warning screen whenever I wanted to start or close a
program, or restart or close a system, I would have chosen for Vista.

At least implement something that this can be turned off. Please?
Or try to reconsider the solution you found for this bug.

[Bug 311531] Re: very slow network

2009-03-02 Thread bert07
For a long time now I have a connection problem with my laptop (Dell
Inspiron 2200), using a Belkin Wireless G notebook PCMCIA Network Card.

I get around it by editing /etc/rc.local and add
---
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M fixed

exit 0
---

It is not solely an Ubuntu problem, because I have the same problem with
Mandriva One installed on the computer.

Now, last week I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on somebody else's computer and I used a
Belkin USB stick to connect at the time. The computer was also a Dell, from the
Demension series.
Same problem. The broadband connection did hardly reach the speed of a
telephone line connection. Same work around.

So because of both times using a Belkin removeble card, I was thinking that it
might be caused by the Belkin drivers.
On the other hand. I read here on the side that many people with many different
cards experience the same problem.

So it might even be a kernel problem. But only happening on laptops,
because my desktop using the same Belkin USB Card, does not have that
problem.

It puzzles me. And along with me, many others.

The work around is easy, but only for those who know it.
It might even not work on everybody's machines. I don't know.

But please, try to figure out what is going on with the wireless
connection on laptops, and preferably find a sollution.

[Bug 313027] Re: MASTER: fglrx does not support xserver 1.6

2009-03-02 Thread bert07
I have a radeon hd 2400 pro and have the same problems.
Jaunty can't run fglrx. If I do, it boots in a screen that is not readable, but
the one thing I can make of it, is that it for some reason took a lower colour
mode and a lower screen resolution.
>From thereon I have to stop the computer because I can not read anything the
>screen displays.

To make my computer run again, I have to change the xorg.conf file and
remove "Driver "fglrx"" in the section "Device". (Using another distro
to get into the partition.)

Also when running openSUSE although the still run the 2.6.27 kernel. But
there the screen colour varies from almost yellow to green and sometimes
even purple. (without fglrx).

Sorry, but I do not have that cd of that day no more, so I can not do as you

Just booted the installation disk, and chose to install directly, instead
of booting the live cd. (Disk jauntu i386 20090223)

- "Tried to install after booting into the disk. Installation failed again."
Booted the installation disk (jauntu i386 20090223) into the live version.

[Bug 313027] Re: MASTER: fglrx does not support xserver 1.6

2009-02-17 Thread bert07
I have a ATI radeon HD 2400 pro.
I can do nothing but wait.
Somewhere here it was said that the "fix date" target was the beta release of
Ubuntu 09.04.
It cannot come too soon.

Though just disabling "fglrx" in "xorg.conf", and adding some info about
your own preferences in the "corg.conf" file (e.g.: resolution of your
working desktop, lets you keep on working.

I will not file another bug report about this before the release of the first
beta. You people know what's going on.
But for working smoothly on a machine running an ATI card, this bug needs to be
resolved rather fast.

I do not mean to push. But Ubuntu 08.10 was released too soon too be a
stable release.

Hopefully the next release is not about "time", but about "ready" and
"finished".

In my opinion 08.10 had not been allowed to be released at that point.
Hopefully 09.04 is what 08.10 should have been.

[Bug 272318] Re: Install screen does not fit the screen

2008-10-12 Thread bert07
I've seen that there is a new daily build of Ubuntu (Oct 12d). I did'nt
try that one. Maybe the problem is solved already.

[Bug 272318] Re: Install screen does not fit the screen

2008-10-12 Thread bert07
Trying to install the daily build of Xubuntu from October 11th for i386.

The window still does not fit the screen.

Something else DID change.
When I entered the partitioner (step 4) I chose "manual". The partitioner
started scanning the disks and than died.

I tries this installing directly without booting to the live cd and
after booting into the live cd.

Hung in both cases.

Conclusion: Ubuntu (Xubuntu) can not be installed at this time.

[Bug 272318] Re: Install screen does not fit the screen

2008-10-02 Thread bert07
Installed the beta dvd for i386 desktop.

Nothing changed: still the same too large screens.
I also tried installing a daily yesterday on my laptop (dell inspiron 2200 - 13
partitions) and also for that the screens were too large.

No resizing possible.

As far as I can see: the window can be resized, but only larger. Not to
fit the screen.

[Bug 272318] Re: Install screen does not fit the screen

2008-09-19 Thread bert07
No, I did not happen in Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS, but you are using a new
screen for step 4 (partitioning), and this was the first alpha of 8.10 I
tried (got a mail that more testers were needed).

I do actually have 15 partitions on hda, and 13 partitions on hdb.

I can not say at the moment that the window can be resizes, I need to
start the cd again, and I already shut that computer down for today.
I'll let you know tomorrow. I need some sleep as well (02.40 AM here).

I filed this bug previously under bug #38442, but Colin Watson asked me to file
it anew.
