still not working... tried a do-release-upgrade -d from 10.04 to 12.04, the / filesystem is 6.0G (5.7), of which 3.6G is used. the release upgrade failed, because it ran out of space halfways, rendering the system unusable, and with a lot of leftover mess. the script should REALLY check for enough space for it to complete. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442456 Title: do-release-upgrade should check for free space in the actual paths where it's needed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/442456/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 703233] Re: Machine fails to boot. Message: 'No init found. Try passing init = bootarg.'
I'm fighting the exact same problem since I switched a server from 7.04 to 10.04. It is running on the very same hardware as 7.04 was running before, nothing has changed, nothing is wrong (disks are free from errors according to SMART, badblocks, extensive torture-testing, etc.) The machine runs 100% rock stable all the time. It is also on a UPS. Unfortunately the server has to be shut down every night because of some stupid fire protection regulation or so, so it gets rebooted every morning. Then randomly, it refuses to boot with the above. Fsck then finds some inodes/block counts wrong, fixes them, and ready to go - until it happensa again randomly in time. Sometimes it runs for months, sometimes it happens just within two weeks... Or it happened today and last week too. Please let me know if I can help with information. But since this is a production machine I can't do too much testing on it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/703233 Title: Machine fails to boot. Thanks for the reply! Yes, xfwm compositing is enabled on :0, but not on the VNC display. as vnc4server doesn't support glx. Gonna try to disable compositing tomorrow and report back. Sad to hear this is a limitation, as this wasn't an issue with any of the previous versions. [Bug 688616] [NEW] Update-manager download progress bar window changes size
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager When I open update-manager and check for updates, then download them, the pop up window appears, showing one progress bar for the overall download progress. This window has a default width, which is normally kept constant during the download progress. There's a small arrow under it, to show details for each file that's being downloaded. If I click it, the window expands and shows details. However, if I click the arrow again, the window collapses and hides the details, but not returning to its original width, but it adjusts its width in a way, that all the text under the progress bar (file name and remaining time) fits in width. And as the file name changes and/or remaining time counts down, this text changes width, and the windows keeps following this width. So the progress bar window's widht is keep changing constantly. This only happens when I expand and then collapse the details. Without this, the window keeps its original width and doesn't change. [Bug 662602] [NEW] Can not move icons on the desktop through a VNC session
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfdesktop4 I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 32bit with Gnome, but XFCE environment is also installed and it's the main environment I use. The machine is remote, so I use it via VNC with resumable sessions. The desktop icons (Home, Filesystem, Devices, Floppy, etc.) are unmovable via a VNC session. Sometimes when I turn on an external USB device, it's icon appears in the middle of the pack, changing position of other icons. Once the device is turned off, the icons stay shifted down. (But this is another bug) After such an event, I cann ot put the icons back to their usual place. (But this isn't caused by the USB device. The icons are unmovable in general, regardless of the USB thing, that was just an example.) The icon gets highlighted, the hand cursor appears, the icon moves when dragging it, but the usual rectangular position marker (where it can be dropped) doesn't appear. After releasing the mouse button, the icon flies back to its position. When logging in physically, to the same environment, the icons are moveable. ** Affects: xfdesktop4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Can not move icons on the desktop through a VNC session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/662602 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 234473] Re: [users-admin] [HARDY] erasing /etc/passwd and /etc/groups when failing to load configuration
i have this empty users groups list too, on a reinstalled 8.04.4. (it was working before, with 8.04, which i used for years until i gave the 10.04 upgrade a try... :) hence the reinstall...) i have added users and groups manually with adduser and other commands (also with webmin). the /etc/groups and /etc/paswwd files are intact. the grpck doesn't find any problem either. i have to note (as in many other cases it seemed to be important), that i'm using the desktop over a vnc connection. i had to unlock several things in the policy kit to allow me to access several admin tools, such as users and groups. but it only affected the unlock button, as far as i can tell. i don't think the usersgroups app would display anything if i'd log in locally (not with vnc), but i can not test this. -- [users-admin] [HARDY] erasing /etc/passwd and /etc/groups when failing to load configuration https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234473 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

i have forgotten to mention, that adding users didn't f##k up the system in any way. it's just the gui app not showing anything. and i already found out why was that in my case (i wish if all things could be fixed this fast! :) in my case, my Real Name contained national characters, which showed up wrong in the /etc/passwd file. the system obviously didn't know how to handle these characters or something. after editing the passwd file manually, the gui app started to work again. -- [users-admin] [HARDY] erasing /etc/passwd and /etc/groups when failing to load configuration https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234473 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba fresh install of ubuntu lucid lynx (10.04) 32bit (after the upgrade from 8.04-10.04 failed badly, had to do a clean install. i decided to reformat everything and try ext4, so all my partitions are ext4 now. i have backed up my previous config files so i'm using the exact same configuration as before (which was working) i have an imap server (cyrus), for which i have a secondary partition, which is on the same partition which is shared via samba, so i can see the folder structure and the files in the imap folders. all mail files are named with a number and a dot at the end, like: 1., 2., 3., 126. etc. there's a stage. folder too. so these are 8.3 files just without an extension (but with a dot) these files and the folder appear as random filenames, when looking from windows (win7 home premium 32 bit). all the other files (including other, 8.3 filenames elsewhere) are working good. all the files are okay on the filesystem too. e.g.: dir z:\cyrus\mail\b\user\bsh\Archive\2006\Freemail\Elkuldott 2009.08.31. 09:32DIR . 2009.08.31. 09:32DIR .. 2009.08.31. 09:0516 088 4HV9M1~H 2009.08.31. 09:05 3 538 4FN8J8~I 2009.08.31. 09:0514 756 4GH46R~K 2009.08.31. 09:05 906 3C6WNZ~8 2009.08.31. 09:06 1 245 4DFQJB~2 2009.08.31. 09:05 2 223 38C12M~G 2009.08.31. 09:05 917 3821GZ~H 2009.08.31. 09:05 1 468 4BR0DO~O ... the stage. folder looks like this: dir z:\cyrus\mail 2010.05.15. 11:21DIR . 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR .. 2010.05.12. 12:56DIR SVP1UA~D 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR z 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR h 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR s 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR q 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR r 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR t 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR l 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR g 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR d 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR k 2009.08.14. 09:12DIR o ... smbd --version Version 3.4.7 uname -a Linux eeebox 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:27:30 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux ** Affects: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: samba -- samba filenames wrong https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 579675] [NEW] cyrus imapd segfaults
Public bug reported: after upgrading from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 directly, my cyrus server stopped working. (among many other things...) after fixing the db type issues, it still won't work. now at least it starts up, but crashes as soon as something tries to connect to it. [Bug 574009] [NEW] system fails to (re)boot after install
Public bug reported: i have found this to happen on two different computer (my desktop and my laptop), with both i386 and x86-64 versions of lucid (final release) steps to reproduce: 1, make a bootable usb pendrive with the release iso image and the usb creator tool found in ubuntu. (i used the setting to discard all changes, ie. non-persistent install) 2, boot the system with the pendrive to install lucid, use the bios' boot menu to select the usb device to be the boot drive. 3, in the installer, choose advanced partitioning (in my case, there were always multiple hard drives present, and the installer always wanted to install on the wrong drive, so i had to guide the installer manually. on the laptop, i installed lucid i386 onto a wd passport usb drive (and not onto the laptop's internal drive). on my desktop, i have an onboard raid0 (dmraid), a third and a fourth hard drive. the fourth is for ubuntu.) 4, since i was upgrading on both systems, i didn't create any partitions, instead, i used the already existing ones, just reformatted them to ext4. so in the installer, i selected manual partitioning, selected the correct target drive, and selected the target partitions (/, /home, /data, swap) one by one, and in the properties, i selected the new filesystem and to format the partition, and also selected their mount points. 5, after selecting what is mounted to where (and selecting the right drive at the final step for the grub2 installer), the install finishes correctly, then asks for a reboot. 6, remove the usb drive, and let it reboot. 7, the first boot hangs with a message: /home (or /data or swap, etc) is not mounted yet, and ask if i want to wait for the mounts to become available, or go to the root terminal. 8, in the root terminal, only the root partition was mounted, and the others weren't, that's why it hung. 9, after manually mounting the rest of the partitions, booting continues and is successful. the problem: when booting off the pendrive, one has to select it to be the temporary booting device in the bios boot menu. this changes the drive order (as seen by the installer kernel), and the pendrive becomes /dev/sda (as it's the boot device), and the other hard drive(s) are going to be /sdb, /sdc, /sdd, etc. say, we want to install on the hard drive called /dev/sdd. after selecting the partitions and their mount points in the installer, it writes /dev/sddX references into fstab. after rebooting, removing the pendrive, and selecting that other drive (the target drive with the freshly isntalled system on it) in the bios bootmenu, it becomes /dev/sda again (instead of /dev/sdd), and the references to mount in fstab become invalid, and booting stops. the root partiion is mounted, because grub passes its reference with its uuid. resolution: the installer should write uuid references into fstab instead of /dev/sdX. (wasn't this the default behavior earlier?) actually, i think, the installer would only work on systems with only one hard drive and one optical drive, when the installer is run from the optical media. this situation won't change the /dev/sdX references. in all other cases, device names would always change and fstab would become invalid. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: 10.04 device fstab lucid mount names uuid -- system fails to (re)boot after install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574009 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 557897] [NEW] Thunar crashes when there's an I/O error during copy
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunar Hello, this will be an incomplete bug report for sure, but I thought it's better to report it. This was a one-time event, happened under certain extreme circumstances, which are since fixed. (So please do not ask me to reproduce it or make logs and traces, as I won't be able to do so!) What happened: I have a win7 system on a nforce raid0 array, which crashed so badly it didn't boot anymore. So I booted my linux drive (it's on a separate drive), which handles the array with dmraid perfectly, and can use the ntfs filesystem too, using ntfs3g. I was about to make backups of my files on that windows partition before I reinstall it (since no fixes worked on it). So I booted into Karmic, opened two thunar windows, browsed to the source files and to the destination folder, and copied the files using copy-paste. It started to copy things, but then, all of a sudden, both thunar windows just disappeared. I started all over, and the same thing happened all the time. Then I used 'mc' (midnight commander) in a terminal, which gave me an I/O error during the copy (this is what i'd expect from thunar too!). As it then turned out, the ntfs filesystem was dirty. I fixed it with ntfsresize, and then I was able to copy my data. There were lots of I/O errors in dmesg too. mc correctly reported the I/O error and didn't crash. I think thunar should do the same, and have some sort of intelligent error reporting, and should not just crash. This happened on a ubuntu karmic, uptodate x86-64. ** Affects: thunar (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Thunar crashes when there's an I/O error during copy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/557897 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 519162] Re: Synaptic sorting column resets
I wanted to report a similar bug, but i think this must be the same thing. What I experience is: open synaptic, filter the list by status (ie. installed, not installed, etc.) and installed. i see a list of all installed packages, but unsorted (or not sorted by the package name, to say the least) when i click on the package name column header, it sorts the list alphabetically, but then loses the status filtering, so i'll see a list of all packages, sorted... also quick search doesn't work. this is ubuntu 9.10 x64 upgraded all the way from 7.04 x64. -- Synaptic sorting column resets https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/519162 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 385372] Re: AMD Athlon X2 7750 - L3 Cache isn't detected
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? LOL, no activity? Seriously? And telling this to me? What activity would you explain from me? I thought, it's your (or someone else's) job to make some activity, after a bug has been reported... And why would it not be an issue anymore, if there were no activites? Do bugs just disappear by themselves, or what? And why you ask me for further testing? Am i the only one with an AMD processor with L3 cache on the whole world? Sorry, I can not test the new prealpha-whatever release ISO. I am running 9.10 since then, i can run tests on this and report, but that's all. I tried the above command, but it spit out tons of error messages (something with epiphany, wtf?), then opened launchpad in firefox and wanted me to log in and specify what privileges apport-collect is going to have, i gave it read-non-private-data, after which the terminal gave another burst of errors. when reading back, i found it mentionong i should have given change-anything rights. So i deleted the mentioned credentials file and wanted to start all over, but it didn't ask for the privileges anymore. So i deleted the privileges on launchpad (from within firefox), but this only made things worse. This stuff is a real PITA. I'm not doing this. Since then i changed to a Phenom II X4 940, which also happen to have a L3 cache, and which is also not displayed by anything, as stated in the original post. So yes, this is still an issue. I hope someone will send you more detailed logs. ok, so this is my default setting - everything should be opaque. if i open the window manager effects settings dialog, it shows everything is set to opaque, but moving and resizing is still transparent. if i change these sliders (or others), the settings are updated and everything reflects the settings in the windowmanagereffects dialog. if i then move the sliders back to the opaque setting, everything becomes opaque, as it should. this only works until a logout and login, or a restart. also, if i open the settings again, without touching anything, the windows become transparent again during moving and resizing, but the settings window still shows everything is set to opaque. in short: the settings are only applied if i move any of the sliders, and the settings only stay until i restart this desktopeffectssettings or if i log out. -- Transparency problems with xfdesktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/325662 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 478246] [NEW] ESI U46SE external usb audio wrong configuration
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pavucontrol The ESI U46SE is an external usb sound device with 6 outputs and 4 inputs (3x stereou outputs and 2x stereo inputs, or 6x mono outputs and 4x monou inputs) The device is recognized as a 5.1 home theater sound card, which is wrong. This device has nothing to do with such devices, the only common thing is both have 6 output channels (5.1). But there is no 5.1 or dolby dts or whatever decoders. In pulse audio (systemwide), there are only 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 5.1 configurations (with the addition of digital inputs and outputs, which this device doesn't have either) This device should have configurations with 3 stereo outputs and 4 stereo inputs instead, so for example, one application would use output 1-2, the other could use output 3-4, and a third one could use output 5-6, also all three stereo channels separately, and not in a 5.1-like configuration. There's something I forgot to mention, don't know if that has anything to do with this: it's a headless machine, i am using it with VNC, but on a gigabit network. (I only mention this, because it seems to affect update manager. I reported another bug, where update manager was terribly slow on this same machine when using VNC, but speedy on the normal display. Maybe the slow refresh rate of a VNC screen affects som timers or screen events that are timed to refreshes or something. [Bug 415761] [NEW] Accidental double click on update-notifier starts two instances
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-notifier Hello I have experienced this many times: when the notification of updates appears on the taskbar/tray, I sometimes double-click it to open up the update manager (as in my experience, double clicking is the most frequent way of restoring windows minimized to the tray). It then starts two instances of update manager, which work in parallel, and one of them gives an error sooner or later, that files are locked etc. (obviously by the other instance). [Bug 325662] Re: Transparency problems with xfdesktop
@Charlie: I don't have compiz. Since then I've been using 8.04.3, then upgraded to 9.04 and the new XFCE 4.6, and the bug is still present. Windows are slightly transparent on move/resize. I have checked the config files, everything is set to opaque (values are 100), but still, it doesn't matter. I experience this since I first ever used XFCE on Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 (both X86 and X86-64) I wonder why you can not reproduce it. I don't think this is only happening to me because of a erroneous install or something, since I am seeing this on multiple computers, multiple installs, even the same computer with reinstalls, different versions, etc. For example, when I do an administrative task, when the screen blacks out (darkens) and asks for an admin password, even that password window is sligthly transparent... ok, last time the kernel update screwed my network, i had to use a keyboard monitor to fix it (instead of ssh/vnc, which didn't work without the network coming up...) so i had the chance of trying this out too. it looks like it works fine with a monitor attached. but it is still terribly slow with vnc. can't it be that somehow the update manager waits for or synchronizes it's progress bar to screen refrshes or something? that's the only thing i can think of, since vnc refresh rate is much slower than a monitor's refresh, but i don't think it's a vnc bug, since verything else works fast with vnc. or maybe it doesn't like to be run on display :1 instead of :0? -- update-manager very slow on asus eee box 202 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321792 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 338873] [NEW] gparted bad command line parameters with mapper devices
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gparted hello gparted doesn't seem to work with /dev/mapper devices. (there's already a bug report of this, but it is another issue as i read) problem: when trying to resize an ntfs partition (i didn't try it with other types) that is on a dmraid array, gparted passes wrong command line parameters to ntfsresize. instead of the partition name, it passes the name of the array to ntfsresize, which then, of course, returns an error to gparted, which then aborts with an error. for example: i have a nforce4 ultra chipset, with 2x320gb drives in a raid0 array. dmraid detects the array fine and creates the device /dev/mapper/nvidia_bijeidde. gparted sees this device, and allows the creation of partitions. the first created partition will be in /dev/mapper/nvidia_bijeidde1 (note the 1 at the end, indicating this is the first partition). it can even format this partition to ntfs. but from here, any operation on the partition fails. checking for errors. moving, resizing, etc. fails with an error message. when the details view is expanded, it becomes clear, that gparted always calls ntfsresize to check the consistency of the file system, before any further action. unfortunatelly gparted passes the array name to ntfsresize in the command line, instead of the partition name. when running ntfsresize from any command line with the correct command line, it works fine. i didn't test this with other file systems, but i could imagine, gparted woudl also pass wrong command line parameters to the other utilities. ** Affects: gparted (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: gparted mapper ntfsresize -- gparted bad command line parameters with mapper devices https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/338873 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 337648] [NEW] doesn't detect CRT monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Hello i'm using ubuntu 8.04.2 on an asus eee box 202 with intel gma945. the box is running completely headless as a home server. the only time i was using a monitor and a keyboard with it was when i installed ubuntu on it, since then it is running with vnc and ssh. yesterday there were some updates, i noticed there were new restricted drivers too. after the update the system rebooted, and i could not connect to it anymore. so i took a spare crt monitor and a keyboard, connected to the box, and i saw, that when it tries to start the xserver, it fails. switches the monitor on/off every 5 seconds. i assume it tries to use a display mode or refresh that is out of range. digging out the xorg logs, i saw the reason: SDVO reports failed to sync (or something) so it apparently doesn't thetect the monitor or just ignores the ddc/edid info and tries to use a bad display mode. i was using a dvi-vga adapter, since the monitor has a vga (dsub) connector and the box only has a dvi conector. the driver reports the card is dual monitor capable, which is probably true for this chipset, but not for this computer: it only has one dvi connector. i remember when i was installing ubuntu, i used a lcd flat display, it didn't work either: the driver didn't detect the proper resolution and refresh. furthermore, it was thinking, it is a dual monitor setup and was detecting the connected dispaly as secondary... ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: crt intel monitor video xorg -- doesn't detect CRT monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337648 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Since then i am using 8.04.2 on different machines, but this bug still remains! I installed 8.04.2 with default gnome, then installed the whole xfce4 from the repository. (with all xfce goodies, xfce tools, artworks, even the xubuntu-default-settings package) The problem is, when i use the xfce desktop compositor (ie. i set the let xfce manage your desktop), then windows become transparent when i move or resize them, panels become transparent, and the xfce menu is transparent too, despite every transparency slider is set to 0 (ie. no transparency) The explicit options to set transparency of windows while moved or resized, the transparency of panels etc, do not seem to have any effect. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vsftpd on our server i noticed, that randomly, vsftpd wasn't running. i thought it is not being started correctly on boot. but then i noticed, that after restarting it, and it was working well, then when our internet connection dropped. and during this and after, vsftp daemon wasn't running anymore (locally). then i tested it and as it turned out, when there is no active internet connection, the vsftp daemon quits pretty soon after it's being started. i configured it to handle passive mode transfers too (even if i prefer active mode), and i'm reading my wan side ip from a dyndns account. i suspect this may have something to do with this unexpected quitting of the daemon. if it can not reach the dyndns domain, it somehow quits or crashes. however, it shouldn't have to. this ftp server is mainly for internal use, it should keep working locall even if there's no active internet connection. i have reproduced this as follows: 1, /etc/init.d/vsftpd start 2, ps -ef | grep ftp: vsftpd was running 3, unplug the modem cable from the router (btw, the local network is on a switch, and the switch is on the router) 4, ps -ef | grep ftp: vsftpd wasn't running anymore 5, /etc/init.d/vsftpd start 6, ps -ef | grep ftp: vsftpd was running again 7, wait a few seconds 8, ps -ef | grep ftp: vsftpd was not running 9, replug the modem cable to the router 10, /etc/init.d/vsftpd start 11, ps -ef | grep ftp: vsftpd was running again there is no log message in /var/log/syslog, /var/log/daemon.log, /var/log/messages, /var/log/vsftp/*, nowehre at all. i am on ubuntu 7.04, 32 bit generic kernel. vsftpd is installed from the default repository using synaptic. /etc/vsftpd.conf: listen=YES #listen_ipv6=YES anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES write_enable=YES local_umask=002 anon_upload_enable=NO #anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES dirmessage_enable=YES xferlog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES #chown_uploads=YES #chown_username=whoever #xferlog_file=/var/log/vsftpd.log #xferlog_std_format=YES idle_session_timeout=600 data_connection_timeout=120 #nopriv_user=ftpsecure #async_abor_enable=YES #ascii_upload_enable=YES ascii_download_enable=YES ftpd_banner=Welcome to FTP service. #deny_email_enable=YES #banned_email_file=/etc/vsftpd.banned_emails chroot_local_user=YES chroot_list_enable=YES chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list #ls_recurse_enable=YES secure_chroot_dir=/var/run/vsftpd pam_service_name=vsftpd rsa_cert_file=/etc/ssl/certs/ssl-cert-snakeoil.pem rsa_private_key_file=/etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key userlist_enable=YES userlist_deny=NO pasv_enable=YES pasv_promiscuous=YES pasv_min_port=25025 pasv_max_port=25099 pasv_addr_resolve=YES pasv_address=XX.XX.org (- this is a dyndns domain) max_per_ip=10 hide_ids=YES use_localtime=YES max_login_fails=3 delay_failed_login=10 ** Affects: vsftpd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- vsftpd quits when there's no working internet connection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277114 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 267027] [NEW] xfce compositor
Public bug reported: default ubuntu 7.04 (with gnome), but using xfce as the desktop environment, installed from the ubuntu repositories. kernel 2.6.20-17 (the latest update from the ubuntu repos). bug existed with previous kernels too. symptom: xfce's own screen compositor is enabled, but all transparency settings set to non-transparent (sliders are all the way to the right). still, xfce-menu is a bit transparent. xfce4-panel-menu-plugin does not exist in Ubuntu. [Bug 264598] [NEW] usplash -c spits out hundreds of CR's in terminal
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: usplash On Ubuntu 7.04, 2.6.20-17, generic 32bit kernel, running XFCE as the desktop environment, using xfce tools (ie. xfce terminal). When I'm logged in onto the desktop, using a xfce-terminal, and calling 'sudo usplash -c', it shows the usplash screen as it's supposed to do. When it finishes and returns to the desktop, in the terminal window, from which usplash was called, there are tons of carriage returns, ie. like if i were keep pressing enter during usplash. I see tons of empty lines, starting with the prompt. It happens a couple hundred times for sure, because i have 200 lines screen buffer and i can not scroll back to the original usplash command in the terminal. Once I did this from a tty too, and the same happened, but only once, i can not reproduce it anymore. But on the desktop it happens all the time. I didn't test it with other terminals either. Steps to reproduce: 1, log on on a 7.04-i32bit ubuntu, use xfce as the desktop environment 2, open a xfce-terminal 3, type: 'sudo uspalsh -c', enter 4, wait until the usplash disappears and returns to the desktop 5, you'll see hundreds of empty line in the terminal window. ** Affects: usplash (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: usplash On Ubuntu 7.04, 2.6.20-17, generic 32bit kernel, running XFCE as the desktop environment, using xfce tools (ie. xfce terminal). [Bug 152648] Re: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error
i have this bug too. just started to happen today. i am on 7.04 i386 desktop (running on a file server). the server is headless, so i log in via vnc on screen :1. since today, when i log in to the desktop using vnc, then close the vnc session, the next time i log in, i am not getting back to the desktop where i left it, but to the login screen again. when i close the vnc session, it crashes X and restarts it, with the above error message. therefore i doubt it's a nvidia driver issue. yesterday i installed webmin, but it's unlikely to have anything to do with this. the other thing i did yesteday was, i found xubuntu-system-tools in the synaptic package manager (i'm using xfce) and installed it, which caused the removal of gnome-system-tools and ubuntu-desktop packages. and in system logs, the x crash error message always appear before the line gconf is not in use, shutting down. so i believe, the crash is caused by yesterdays auto-removal of gnome-system-tools. i check this out now, will reinstall gnome-system-tools -- gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152648 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 246866] [NEW] logout not always works
Public bug reported: Ok, i'd like to report this as a possible bug (nothing serious though) I am not quite sure if this is xfce4 or xfce-panel-menu-plugin or even xfce-session or something else, sorry. I have two pc's in a very similar scenario, both having this issue. The scenario: file server on a small network of windows pcs. the server runs ubuntu 7.04 (feisty). the server is headless, i use ssh or vnc to do maintenance. the window manager is xfce4 (from the ubuntu repos), but since it's plaing ubuntu install (not xubuntu!), it came with gnome as default, but i use xfce. When i log in to the gui using VNC, then i want to log out, i click the xfce menu button (the one similar to the start menu in windows xp), then select logout. This then fades the desktop and pops up the logout dialog, where i can choose from logout, user switch, shutdown, restart. However, this does not always happen! Sometimes when i click the logout in the menu, it does nothing, just puts me back on the desktop, and doesn't always display the logout dialog. Sometimes i have to try it 4-5 times until it displays the popup. After that, it logs out/reboots/shuts down as normal. I don't know which plugin does this. And since i use VNC, i can not tell if it happens with a physical login too, i have never tried. Maybe it only happens in a VNC session? Dunno. And as said, I have 2 such servers (one at work and one at home), both are ubuntu 7.04 with xfce, both headless, both with VNC, and this happens on both of them, randomly. ** Affects: xfce4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: logout popup xfce ** Description changed: Ok, i'd like to report this as a possible bug (nothing serious though) I am not quite sure if this is xfce4 or xfce-panel-menu-plugin or even xfce-session or something else, sorry. [Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it
i have this bug (or i'd say, annoyance) too, on 7.04 with xfce (but in gnome too) on several machines. when i start synaptic, i used to move the mouse on the search button while it loads the list, for a faster searching. but when the load completes and the search button becomes active, it's not clickable - have to move the mouse off it and than back, as described in the first post. i wonder why this couldn't been fixed since years? strange. but i'm not complaining, ubuntu is still a superb little OS. :) -- Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/22930 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 227628] [NEW] synaptic and software updates don't work over VNC
Public bug reported: Description: Ubuntu 8.04; Release: 8.04 Problem: when I log in locally, on the computer, synaptic and software updates work just fine. however, I rarely do this, because I used to log in from an other PC, over a VNC connection, using Xvnc/vnc4server, viewer is UltraVNCviewer on XP. when using synaptic or the software updater this way, they do not work. In Synaptic, it just displays the progress bar after it's loaded, checks for the available programmes, but the progress bar never reaches the end and it never gets to display the list of programs. when I check for updates, the software updater displays a progress bar and building dependency tree (or something like that, the language is hungarian), and the progress bar never finishes. I have tried to change the sources, it started to download the list files, but after 30 mins it didn't finish and many of the files were unsuccessful. also tried different sources (while logged in locally), the servers didn't have any updates etc., but the main server had 69 or so... something must be broken in the updates distribution...? apt-get still works fine over vnc in a terminal, and over ssh login too. all in all: synaptic co. doesn't seem to work over vnc, but they work fine on local login. notes: * this is not a clean install, i have installed 7.04 from a live cd, then applied all the available updates, the upgraded to 7.10, then upgraded to 8.04. vnc was working fine on 7.04 and 7.10. ** this is the default 7.04 desktop i386 with gnome, but i use xfce instead of gnome by default. but strictly speaking this is not a xubuntu install, it's just normal ubuntu with xfce installed. hope this information is enough... ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- synaptic and software updates don't work over VNC https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/227628 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
