--- Comment From s...@de.ibm.com 2024-05-16 09:03 EDT---
On my Ubuntu 24.04 machine, I'm now using
$ uname -a
Linux a3545029.lnxne.boe 6.8.0-31-generic #31-Ubuntu SMP Sat Apr 20 00:14:26
UTC 2024 s390x s390x s390x GNU/Linux

and indeed compat layer is turned off:
$ file ./hello-s390.old
./hello-s390.old: ELF 32-bit MSB pie executable, IBM S/390, version 1 (SYSV),
dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld.so.1,
BuildID[sha1]=561b01f83f5198b8680d965a418d0b972fecd066, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0,
with debug_info, not stripped

$ ./hello-s390.old
bash: ./hello-s390.old: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

But we still have the 31bit libc6 packages:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/noble/libc6-s390
https://packages.ubuntu.com/noble/libc6-dev-s390
perhaps also the 31bit cross packages.

Shall or can those 31bit packages be removed?

@Canonical / Frank:
In the bug description it was stated that the problem has been observed in all
Ubuntu releases: focal to noble.
According to comment #13, the fix has been released
"Included in pam | 1.5.3-5ubuntu3." (noble).

Are there any further actions required on our (IBM) side to get it
included in F, J and M release? Thanks

[Bug 2065579] Re: [UBUNTU 22.04] OS guest boot issues on 9p filesystem

2024-05-13 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From d.herrendoer...@de.ibm.com 2024-05-13 06:57 EDT---
This Bug is the result of the fix to:
CVE-2023-2861: Prohibit opening any special file directly on host

I also opened a Bug in the qemu bugtracker
https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/2337

The containers fail because syslog cannot open its unix domain socket on the
filesystem.
We tracked the change that provokes this error to a CVE change in qemu that
forbids opening of special files to
prevent exposing data from the host. Special files should be handled by the
guest os.
Unix domain socket files are also special files, and they are handled by the
guest OS in their entirety, and the 9p server in qemu assigns them individual
inodes so they are safe to open. But they must be opened so their fd can be
passed to the appropriate connect() or bind() function so the OS can use them.
Socket files don't have a traditional read or write functionality, they are
mere representatives for a local address.
There is no convention for where domain socket files should go, so there is no
easy fix by just creating a tmpfs somewhere.
We also see other workloads and services failing for not being able to open
their local socket files.

The analysis of CVE-2023-2861 in detail reveals
- opening of device files through the 9p server directly grants access to
read/write functions of those device files. Also device files can be created
in-place anywhere.
- opening of FIFOs is somewhat unsafe as long as there are possible collisions
that could expose host data using read/write.
- opening of sockets is safe because the 9p server protects the revealed inode
and provides no way to connect the file to a socket.

Hi Phoenyx,

I'm glad to hear that you were able to fix your issue.

I have to admit I don't get the full picture of your analysis:
The firewall gateways you mention, where are they? Inside KVM guests attached
to your OSA card? Or external to IBM Z?
The pinging device where is that? External connected via a physical switch?
What exactly was the unexptected bahaviour of the OSA cards?

In case you want us to investigate further, I would propose to try and recreate
the issue and reduce it to the minimum failing scenario (just 2 endpoints; can
we ommit VLAN, bridge, firewall, .. ? The less the better)
And then describe exactly what the expected behaviour is, what the unexpected
behaviour is and how to reproduce it.

More information from phoenyx:
"Hi Sandy,

We?ve managed to find what was causing the behaviour of packets being
received on the source interface to occur; however, we do still have a
concern that the behaviour was only present on the OSA card.

We had a device on the network that was attempting to ping the firewall
gateways on each VLAN ? Which were configured to drop ICMP packets. This
was causing the network to have a solid number of broadcast packets
being sent out on each VLAN (2 per second, per VLAN).

The firewalls have been reconfigured to accept ICMP traffic, and now
that the broadcast packets are not being sent out, the OSA is working
exactly as expected.

However, the OSA cards were the only ones to display issues while this
was occurring, all other NICs were functioning despite this network
traffic (x86, RoCE, etc)? And we are not sure why only the OSA was
displaying that behaviour. Would you happen to have any insights on this
at all?

Many thanks,
Nyx"

Frank has confirmed in his previous comment that the fix will be part kernel
6.8.0-31.31.

I also verified the bug on the same level of kernel and updated my
comments above that the fix is working as expected.

Since it is a generic kernel, I believe that the Fix is already a part
of the source code. If not, please get this included in the upcoming
release.

[Bug 2064345] [NEW] Power guest secure boot with key management: userspace portion

2024-04-30 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Covering the userspace portion (secvarctl)

Feature:

This feature comprises PowerVM LPAR guest OS kernel verification to
extend the chain of trust from partition firmware to the OS kernel and
includes key management. GRUB and the host OS kernel are signed with 2
separate public key pairs. Partition firmware includes the the public
verification key for GRUB in its build and uses it to verify GRUB. GRUB
includes the public verification key for the OS kernel in its build and
uses it to verify the OS kernel image

Test case:

If secure boot is switched off, any GRUB and kernel boots.
If secure boot is switched on:
  - Properly signed GRUB boots.
  - Improperly signed GRUB does not boot.
  - Tampered signed GRUB does not boot.
  - Properly signed kernels boot.
  - Improperly signed kernels do not boot.
  - Tampered signed kernels do not boot.
TPM PCRs are extended roughly following the TCG PC Client and UEFI specs as
they apply to POWER.

[Bug 2060939] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

--- Comment From wint...@de.ibm.com 2024-04-29 05:15 EDT---
I got the reply from Phoenyx:
Hi Sandy,

We?ve made the suggested changes to arp_ignore and arp_announce, but
this does not seem to have had any effect on the issue unfortunately ?
There has been no reduction in the number of packets that giving the
?received packet on vlan2011 with own address as source address? error.

We could certainly look at setting up 1 bridge with multiple bridgeports
to test that configuration, it was set up this way to replicate our
working Z14 environment. I?m not sure what the original decision was
that led to that setup though.

Kind regards,
Phoenyx

Hi,
We have had a reply from the AIX support team (see below) explaining the RENEW
requests. Do you have any further questions for the AIX support team or can we
supply any further diagnostic information to progress this issue ?

Regarding the comment/question about RENEW reqs from Linux:

RENEW is done when half the lease period has elapsed without any state
operation going on.

Here, the Linux server's lease is 90 seconds. From an NFS perspective,
there is nothing strange or remarkable about the pattern of RENEW reqs
sent in the good & bad cases. If there is a specific question about
renews in the latest captures let us know.

It was decided internally that the Novalink team will be taking a patched socat
.deb and placing it within their own repo to provide the correct behavior in
their customer environments.

Thank you to everyone that spent time on this bug.

We are awaiting confirmation from the Novalink team that this method of
providing the correct behavior is working successfully. Thank you to
Frank for building the .deb that will be used.

So the same needs to be backported to the Ubuntu24.04 kernel as well.

Hi,
Thanks for looking at the logs. I agree that both syslogs (AIX 7.2 and 7.3)
contain multiple "TCP recvfrom got EAGAIN" entries.

To clarify the information in the attachments, I have updated the
comment for the attachments of the syslog for the non-working AIX 7.3
pair (amaliada and adamsongrunter. The syslog is in two parts because
the Bugzilla file uploader couldn't handle such a large file. It is NOT
mixed with the AIX 7.2 syslog.

The syslog for the working pair AIX 7.2 (adia and amberjack) was
smaller, so it is a single file attachment.

I will ask the IBM AIX support team about the NFS Client lease renewal
in both AIX 7.2 and 7.3.

[Bug 2042363] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2024-04-17 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From david_pa...@uk.ibm.com 2024-04-17 05:37 EDT---
Hi,
I have run the same MQ HA test on a working(AIX 7.2) and non working(AIX 7.3)
pair of machines with the same Linux NVSv4 Ubuntu 20.04 (kernel updated to
5.4.0-176-generic). I used the same RPC debug trace options as previously.

Here are the details of the uploaded tar.gz file called
CASE_TS012306761.tar.gz. I do have other trace files if you need them.

AIX 7.3 test was between machine amaliada and partner adamsongrunter on
16/04/2024 starting at 14:01 and failing at 14:04:07:971116 with a
failure to write a file on the shared NFSv4 server.

There is a partial syslog from the Linux NVSv4 server duckseason
covering that period called
TS012306761/syslog_16042024_amaliada_primary_adamsongrunter_partner_both_aix73.log

Covering the same period, there are a set of tcpdump files in subfolder
TS012306761/tcpdumps_amaliada_primary_admasongrunter_partner_both_aix73/

AIX 7.2 test was between primary machine adia and partner amberjack on
17/04/2024 starting at 09:09:48 and ending successfully at 09:16:29.

There is a partial syslog from the linux NVSv4 server duckseason
covering that period called
TS012306761/syslog_17042024_adia_primary_amberjack_partner_both_aix72.log

Covering the same period, there are a set of tcpdump files in subfolder
TS012306761/tcpdumps_adia_primary_amberjack_partner_both_aix72/

We are happy to supply further info to help resolve this issue. Thanks
for your help and advice.

A reply I sent via email to Phoenix Cameron and others:

I had an look at the data attached to the bugzilla.
I don?t really understand the setup. Why do have 30 bridges on top of 30 VLAN
interfaces all connected to the same OSA interface?
Why not 1 bridge with 30 vlan-bridgeports ?

I am wondering whether this could be related to the infamous arp flux issue.
Maybe you want to try setting
net.ipv4.conf.all.arp_ignore=1
net.ipv4.conf.all.arp_announce=2

Hi Frank,

An update from my  side:

!SHORT:

GOOD:
noble(with a nit), mantic, jammy
BAD/not verifyable:
focal

!LONG:

Verified for:

* 24.04 (noble):

with today's (2024-apr-12) s390tools version from noble repository (after a
release-upgrade from jammy):
- genprotimg
- pvattest
- pvsecret
work.
did **not** use your PPA

But there is a mismatch from the package version to the version that the
tools report:

> apt-cache showpkg s390-tools
Package: s390-tools
Versions:
2.31.0-0ubuntu5
(/var/lib/apt/lists/ports.ubuntu.com_ubuntu-ports_dists_noble_main_binary-s390x_Packages)

> pvattest --version
pvattest version 2.31.0-build-20240409

You very likely forgot to change the DISTRELEASE variable in common.mak

* 23.10 (mantic):
All work with your PPA
- genprotimg
- pvattest
- pvsecret

* 22.04 (jammy):
All work with your PPA
- genprotimg
- pvattest

* 20:04 (focal):

the updated s390-tools package from your PPA has no genprotimg in it:

2) Get a signing key (z15) + intermediate certificate

[Bug 2033405] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2024-04-11 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From berg...@us.ibm.com 2024-04-11 15:57 EDT---
The upstream bugzilla has been closed as INVALID (ie, not a GCC bug). The
problem was tracked down to an aliasing violation in the sha2.c source file.
It seems the sha2.c file from dcfldd is shared among many different software
packages and some of those packages have already detected the bug and fixed it.
 I verified the same patch fixes the issue reported here.

There are links to the sha2.c fix mentioned in the GCC bugzilla that the
dcfldd project should pick up.

Talking with Sam James from Gentoo on IRC, he said he would work with
the dcfldd project to get the fix picked up there.

Extend modref to track kills

This patch adds kill tracking to ipa-modref. This is representd by array
of accesses to memory locations that are known to be overwritten by the
function.

gcc/ChangeLog:

2021-11-14  Jan Hubicka

* ipa-modref-tree.c (modref_access_node::update_for_kills): New
member function.
(modref_access_node::merge_for_kills): Likewise.
(modref_access_node::insert_kill): Likewise.
* ipa-modref-tree.h (modref_access_node::update_for_kills,
modref_access_node::merge_for_kills, modref_access_node::insert_kill):
Declare.
(modref_access_node::useful_for_kill): New member function.
* ipa-modref.c (modref_summary::useful_p): Release useless kills.
(lto_modref_summary): Add kills.
(modref_summary::dump): Dump kills.
(record_access): Add mdoref_access_node parameter.
(record_access_lto): Likewise.
(merge_call_side_effects): Merge kills.
(analyze_call): Add ALWAYS_EXECUTED param and pass it around.
(struct summary_ptrs): Add always_executed filed.
(analyze_load): Update.
(analyze_store): Update; record kills.
(analyze_stmt): Add always_executed; record kills in clobbers.
(analyze_function): Track always_executed.
(modref_summaries::duplicate): Duplicate kills.
(update_signature): Release kills.
* ipa-modref.h (struct modref_summary): Add kills.
* tree-ssa-alias.c (alias_stats): Add kill stats.
(dump_alias_stats): Dump kill stats.
(store_kills_ref_p): Break out from ...
(stmt_kills_ref_p): Use it; handle modref info based kills.

--- Comment From berg...@us.ibm.com 2024-04-10 16:19 EDT---
Confirmed. This seems to fail for gcc12 and later and passes for gcc11 and
earlier. I have confirmed that the source file that is mis-compiled is
src/sha2.c.
Compiling the entire package with -O2 and sha2.c with -O3 shows the error, as
well as compiling the entire package with -O3 and sha2.c with -O2 it passes.

Given we have a known good gcc version and a known bad version, we
should be able to git bisect gcc to identify the commit that causes the
failure.

bisected it to commit fce7913b13d0 ("NFSD: Use a bitmask loop to encode FATTR4
results")
Looks like an unfixed endianness issue since v6.7.

commit fce7913b13d0270bcf926f986b7ef329e2e56eec
Author: Chuck Lever
Date:   Mon Sep 18 10:02:12 2023 -0400

NFSD: Use a bitmask loop to encode FATTR4 results
The fattr4 encoder is now structured like the COMPOUND op encoder:
one function for each individual attribute, called by bit number.
Benefits include:
- The individual attributes are now guaranteed to be encoded in
bitmask order into the send buffer

- There can be no unwanted side effects between attribute encoders

- The code now clearly documents which attributes are /not/
implemented on this server

May I ask why the distro build is forcing the use of -fno-omit-frame-pointer on
ppc64le? It just leads to less efficient code on ppc64le.

The consensus in the GCC bugzilla is that the inline asm used in greenlet is
itself buggy and this is not a compiler bug. A different solution to their
inline asm will need to be used.

I continued to configure a guest (L2) on a Fedora LPAR (L1) with 1 GB of memory
and the virt-install command below, I could recreate this issue where the
installer froze for around 15 to 20 minutes post accepting a few inputs from
user (like language, keyboard layout, network config etc.). The installer
eventually crashes in this case as well.

--- Comment From amit.machhi...@ibm.com 2024-04-10 06:35 EDT---
Hi,

I could not reproduce this bug with the currently available ISOs below:

https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily-live/, the latest being the one
generated on 04/09:

Found label 'Ubuntu-Server 24.04 LTS _Noble Numbat_ - Beta ppc64el
(20240409)'

The installer is crashing every time while trying to install a guest via an ISO
with `virt-install` command below:

-
#!/bin/bash

QCOW2="/home/amachhiw/images/ubuntu.qcow2"
CDROM="/home/amachhiw/images/noble-live-server-ppc64el.iso"

virt-install --name ubuntu_1 --ram 2048 --disk path=$QCOW2,size=8 --vcpus 4
--os-type linux --os-variant generic --network bridge=virbr0 --graphics none
--console pty,target_type=serial --cdrom $CDROM
-

The installer crashes with the below error:

According to https://github.com/python-greenlet/greenlet/issues/395 this is the
source with asm affected:

https://github.com/python-
greenlet/greenlet/blob/master/src/greenlet/platform/switch_ppc64_linux.h

It is likely that r31 is reserved when the frame pointer is required.

Adding one of the powerpc toolchain developers to confirm.

CONFIG_KFENCE is the config option that is increasing the memory requirement
significantly for radix MMU.

For radix MMU case, memory is direct mapped with 2MB size.
But when KFENCE is used, direct mapping is done at pagesize granularity (64K).
This sharply increased the page table allocation size, on a 100GB system,
from ~23MB to ~3223MB with CONFIG_KFENCE. Experimenting to find if this
memory requirement can be brought down. If not, thinking of disabling KFENCE
for dump capture environment.

Hi Frank

Thank you for the supply of packages.

I currently have no noble (24.04) system by hand. I will test noble as
soon as I have access.

For mantic, jammy, focal, it seems that a new s390-tools-signed package
is missing in the PPA (it is there in the noble PPA). Tested only on
focal.

Example for focal:

after adding the ppa + update.
> apt upgrade s390-tools
[...]
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
s390-tools : Depends: s390-tools-signed (= 2.12.0-0ubuntu3.8) but
2.12.0-0ubuntu3.7 is to be installed

Thank you in advance for a fix/solution.

And also, sorry for the Rust-backport inconvenience.
BTW, I released a new s390-tools version on Wednesday
(https://github.com/ibm-s390-linux/s390-tools/releases/tag/v2.32.0) with the
armonk problem resolved.

Steffen

I am very curious if anyone else has been able to work around this while
passing stdio as an argument. I just assumed socat was not a very popular
package. When I pass stdin (vs stdio) to socat within mkvterm it works.

Let me check with the Novalink team to see if this is an acceptable
workaround for them. Either way - I do not feel like the testcase parts
are needed, but they do not hurt anything. I also feel like the code
change impacting the socat binary is unlikely to break someone else's
workaround within a script. Many thanks!

Your proposal makes sense. Let me see what we can do.

I tested to see if mkvterm was performing as expected with the kernel in
focal-proposed, and the behavior was correct. Ritu in Novalink did as well.

In addition to that, the kernel was installed on two different lpars,
and another engineer within IBM performed basic tests and stress tests.
All tests passed. HVCS is working as expected. Many thanks

Hello Frank,

I upgraded the system to 6.8.0-20-generic kernel and the issue is not
seen even after multiple reboots.

Also. I took the source available here:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/720006283/linux-
source-6.8.0_6.8.0-20.20_all.deb

I see that, the above mentioned patch is not applied in this source. So,
if the issue is getting fixed without the patch, is there a need for
this patch?

Well, dependent on your kernel base you may need to pull in some more fixes.
Best is to simple follow the commit chain. For example with an
git log drivers/s390/crypto
you get the commit chain. Filter out the vfio stuff (or even simpler, pick it
also) - this way you get an update of the while AP bus + zcrypt + pkey + vfio
stuff. Dependencies to the rest of the kernel are rare and can usually be
solved simple by pulling in one patch or so.
Doing the update this way keeps the code consistent and ready for future
backports.

Hello Frank,

This issue happened on a P10 Denali LPAR(KVM on PowerVM)

I haven't built any custom kernel. Per my chat discussion records with
my team, https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily-
live/pending/noble-live-server-ppc64el.iso was the ISO I had used and I
had downloaded it around Feb 7-9 time frame.

Even with the latest ISO available as on today also this issue is
getting recreated.

Sure, I don't mind giving a try with ISO from proposed. Could you please
point me to the ISO path. I did a search but couldn't find it.

[Bug 2059303] [NEW] [UBUNTU 20.04] SE-tooling: New IBM host-key subject locality (s390-tools)

2024-03-27 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Description: SE-tooling: New IBM host-key subject locality
Symptom:
On April 24 (z15) / March 29 (z16) user will notice that the
tooling for Secure execution will no longer detect that the provided
IBM signing key for that generation is a valid IBM signing key. The
error message will contain "no IBM signing key found" or similar. The
respective tool will reject creating an encrypted request/image as it
could not verify the host-key for its validity. This affects
genprotimg, pvattest, and pvsecret.
Problem:
The new IBM signing keys no longer contain 'Poughkeepsie' as 'subject
locality' and 'Armonk' is used. The SE tooling checks, beside other
things, for the subject in the IBM signing key. If the subject is not
the expected one, the certificate is not recognized as a valid IBM
signing key. With no valid IBM signing key, the host-key verification
cannot succeed and users cannot build trustable SE images and
attestation or add-secret requests.
Solution:
Mitigations are available upstream. The fixes allow Armonk as
additional locality in the subject and allow potential mismatches in
the locality of revocation list or host-key issuer subject that may
still contain Poughkeepsie instead of Armonk.
Reproduction: Use a new IBM signing key in the unpatched tooling.

The fix is required due to the circumstances described here:
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/linux-on-systems?topic=systems-whats-new#iplsdkwhatsnew__title__2

This is required for all Ubuntu releases in service that support secure
execution.
Therefore, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (focal) and above are affected and need to be fixed.

I am not able to print "real-base" values as well. I tried setting the

real-base values? We hope 24.04 installation should also go fine.
