Dan (and anyone else who might encounter this bug), This issue is caused by Nvidia's proprietary driver, if you switch the hue settings in Totem (or gstreamer) from minimum to maximum you'll get normal playback again. I have also run into this problem in Hardy with proprietary Nvidia drivers (Quadro 570 in my case).
