[Bug 1201046] [NEW] Even basic help options are missing from the whiptail dialog

2013-07-13 Thread crf
Public bug reported:

Basic help for using the whiptail dialog need to be present in the
package reconfiguration dialogue that may be presented to the user after
updating grub. For instance, that TAB moves from option to option, SPACE
toggles options, and ENTER moves on to the next step.

There are no help options for how to work the dialog presented to the
user. The typical user isn't going to know how to work a whiptail
dialog. They are not even going to know that the dialog is presented by
a program called whiptail, and so are not likely to read its man page.

Pressing ENTER in the dialog may send the User back the beginning, if an
option otherwise needed to the selected.

2013-06-14 Thread crf
I do have some schemas from /usr/local installed .

I don't know why gdm is starting telepathy. It's probably due to a
package I installed. How might I find that out? I have telepathy-
indicator installed. It has a file /etc/xdg/autostart/telepathy-
indicator.desktop.

Would you like a log, as explained here? ~~

[Bug 1175849] [NEW] firefox in-browser pdf viewer choosing wrong character enconding

2013-05-02 Thread crf
Public bug reported:

Often when I view pdf documents online using firefox's built in PDF
viewer, the chosen character encoding or font is wrong.

So the text is unreadable. English documents are printed in something like
Tibetan script, for example.

[Bug 1057841] [NEW] After logging into unity, I can't switch users. Goes to lock screen. Using GDM

2012-09-27 Thread crf
Public bug reported:

If I start the computer, and choose a unity session, I can't switch
users.

When I try to use the menu to select a new user, the screen goes blank.
If I touch the mouse, it just shows the locked screen for the current
user.

By contrast, If I choose a gnome session to begin with, I can switch
users. However, if the new user starts a unity session, they also won't
be able to use the menu on the top right of unity, to switch back to the
other session.

I am using GDM and Quantal.

trying to open some new programs I was getting messages saying I was low

[Bug 973270] Re: Printer does not provide REQUIRED job history.

2012-06-21 Thread crf
After installing these cups packages so as to be able to use the cups
1.4 backend, upgrading to ubuntu+1 had some problems. It left the cups
package broken.

I tried adding a printer using this ipp14 uri and it worked.

[Bug 973270] Re: Printer does not provide REQUIRED job history.

2012-06-05 Thread crf
It is working as expected. System-config-printer finds my printer and
the first choice is AppSocket JetDirect for protocol.

The reason it wasn't working before was because I had another system-
config-printer is /usr/local, which I'd installed earlier to see if it
would help. Even though I ran /usr/system-config-printer, I guess it was
pick up certain files from the other one installed. My fault.

[Bug 973270] Re: Printer does not provide REQUIRED job history.

2012-06-02 Thread crf
Perhaps system-config-printer is still not by default showing a first choice of
the AppSocket/JetDirect protocol?
When I run /usr/bin/system-config-printer, it chooses IPP network printer via
DNS-SD as the first connection choice.

Printing now works.

I recreated the Samsung 325W printer using the JetDirect/AppSocket protocol.
Using either the Samsung proprietary or Foo2QPDL drivers, the printer seems to
work as well as it did the past.

Thank you very much for the work-around.

[Bug 926968] Re: cups-pdf doesn't follow AnonDirName setting

2012-05-17 Thread crf
Trying to understand the log file generated, I think this is happening because
Ubuntu now recognizes any anonymous user (guest) and gives them a temporary
Home in /tmp/guest-home.xyz
So in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf

Out ${HOME}/PDF

is followed and it does not get to the setting AnonDirName (or any other
setting dealing with anonymous users).

So these settings for anonymous in cups-pdf.conf will never come into
effect on Ubuntu so long as it has this policy of giving temporary home
dirs to any guest user.

How can this situation be remedied? Should there be a special user for
cups like guest-print, with different abilities than the current
guest?

I think the whole logic of this will have to change.

I'm no expert. All I want is to be able to anonymously print documents
on an ipad to a pdf printer and then have them show up in a directory in
Ubuntu. And I want current real users on Ubuntu to be able to use their
own directories to save PDF files.

Changing to invalid, since there is nothing that can be done absent
further changes in Ubuntu to make cups-pdf anonymous use work.
